Abstract:There has been considerable effort directed at developing "cognitive radio" (CR) platforms, which will expose the lower-layers of the protocol stack to researchers, developers and the "public". In spite of the great potential of such a radio platform, such "public" development threatens the success of these platforms: the proliferation of such wireless platforms, plus the open-source nature of their supporting software, is powerful but also dangerous. It is easily conceivable that inexpensive and widely available cognitive radios could become an ideal platform for abuse since the lowest layers of the wireless protocol stack are accessible to programmers. In order to regulate the future radio environment, this paper presents a framework, known as TRIESTE (Trusted Radio Infrastructure for Enforcing SpecTrum Etiquettes), which can ensure that radio devices are only able to access/use the spectrum in a manner that conforms to their privileges. In TRIESTE, two levels of etiquette enforcement mechanisms are employed. The first is an on-board mechanism that ensures trustworthy radio operation by restricting any potential violation operation from accessing the radio through a secure component located in each CR. External to individual cognitive radios, an infrastructure consisting of spectrum sensors monitors the radio environment, and reports measurements to spectrum police agents that punish CRs if violations are detected.

Abstract:In the process of China's automated production, the upgrading and networking of old infrastructures becomes one of the key issues. With large quantity, numerous varieties and wide distribution, these infrastructures brings complex design work and high cost to network them into fieldbus, which greatly hamper the building of intelligent factories. This paper proposed an industrial-control solution to network these infrastructures by power line carrier (PLC) communication. The solution applies Time-Triggered Ethernet(TTE), one of the real-time Ethernet to solve the problem of communication congestion and can limit the control accuracy on the level of ns. The network performance of TTE is verified on OMNeT++ at the last of the paper.

Abstract:Today, the rail traffic as a large capacity public transportation way gets rapid development in the world, in order to guarantee the train's safety, people use train network to monitor the train's real time status. But with the developing of safety requirement, the traditional MVB network's low transmission rate has been unable to meet the train safety monitoring's large capacity data transmission requirement, so people put forward the idea of industrial Ethernet. Industrial Ethernet although can meet the requirement of large capacity, high rate transmission requirement, but still in the initial development stage, there has no unified transmission protocol and interface specification, so research on transmission standard of train safety monitoring network with great data transmission capacity has become the new development direction. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Abstract:Wireless network planning is a key component for TD-LTE system deployment. In this paper, we investigate the wireless network planning method for a railway TD-LTE system. This evaluation is based on an actual TD-LTE system deployment for Shuohuang railway and includes frequency planning, network capacity prediction, wireless network coverage planning and cell planning. The corresponding Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) and throughput of the Railway TD-LTE System are further evaluated by Atoll network planning software, to validate the rationality for wireless network planning in such scenarios.

Abstract:Science and Technology Informatization Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security released the new generation of police use digital trunking standard PDT in April 2010 in Beijing. Based on brief description of PDT and Tetra standards, this paper comparatively analyzes the specific performance indicators of two standard PDT and Tetra from the aspects of voice quality, voice services, data services, and so on. The analysis shows that advantages of PDT in terms of operational capacity is more obvious, and it is more in line with the development needs of Chinese police trunking communication system.

Abstract:The integration of satellite and terrestrial communication systems plays a vital role in the fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G) for the ubiquitous coverage, reliable service and flexible networking. Moreover, the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication with large bandwidth is a key enabler for 5G intelligent rail transportation. In this paper, the satellite-terrestrial channel at 22.6 GHz is characterized for a typical high-speed railway (HSR) environment. The three-dimensional model of the railway scenario is reconstructed and imported into the Cloud Ray-Tracing (CloudRT) simulation platform. Based on extensive ray-tracing simulations, the channel for the terrestrial HSR system and the satellite-terrestrial system with two weather conditions are characterized, and the interference between them are evaluated. The results of this paper can help for the design and evaluation for the satellite-terrestrial communication system enabling future intelligent rail transportation.

Abstract:DMR is a digital trunking communication protocol proposed by ETSI which has predictable doubling of capacity in existing 12.5 kHz licensed channels and delivers backwards spectrum compatibility with legacy analog systems. The DMR system implemented in this paper is based on SDR (Software Defined Radio) structure, which components that have been implemented in hardware (e.g. filters, modulator/demodulator, synchronization, etc.) are implemented by means of software on a central processor. The system architecture and baseband process are emphasized. The system and modules in the system can be integrated as a wave component library to other communication system, meanwhile all functions, modes and applications can be configured, reconfigured and upgraded in the field with new capabilities by software. The SDR based DMR system implemented in this paper communicates well with commercial terminals which proves the accuracy of signaling processing and compatibility with existing terminals. The system holds great significance in multi-modes system research and digital trunking communication system substitute for current analog trunking system.

Abstract:TETRA is a Digital Trunked Radio protocol recommended by ETSI.The paper first introduces the structure and single flow of the data link layer in the air interface of TETRA protocol briefly.Since the hardware and software designs of the TETRA mobile terminal are carried out simultaneously,in order to settle the problem that the software has no hardware test platform when it is designed,a model used to simulate and test the signal flow is discussed.This model uses multithread of the Window platform to simulate the target system,and employs the Socket technique to implement the data channel and control channel.Finally,from simulating Block,data sharing,synchronization and mutex,the paper analyzes how to use this model to simulate the DLL signal flow in detail.

Abstract:As a widely acknowledged efficient and green transportation model, rail traffic is expected to evolve into a new era of smart rail mobility whereby infrastructure, trains, and travelers will be interconnected to achieve optimized mobility, higher safety, and lower costs. Thus, a seamless high-data rate wireless connectivity with up to dozens of gigahertz bandwidth is required. Such a huge bandwidth requirement motivates the exploration of the underutilized millimeter (mm) wave and terahertz (THz) bands. In this paper, the motivations for developing millimeter wave and THz communications for railway are clarified by first defining the applications and scenarios required for smart rail mobility. Ray-tracing simulations at 100 GHz imply that to form high-gain directional antenna beams, dynamic beamforming strategies and advanced handover design are critical for the feasibility of THz communications to enable smart rail mobility.

Design of a Safety Protocol in Railway Signaling Systems

Abstract:The railway signaling system is a safety related system composed of several sub-systems which have to exchange information with each other. As the communication system may be subjected to intentional or unintentional external attacks, the application of specific safety techniques is necessary. In this paper, a safety protocol is designed. Compared with the general TCP/IP protocol, a safety layer, on which several safety measures are applied to defense against the possible threats or attacks, is inserted between the top application layer and the lower transmission layer. The result illustrates that the designed protocol conforms to the international standard EN50129, and can switch the system to a fail-safe state when an unexpected failure or error occurs.

Abstract:An emerging railway technology called smart railway promises to deliver higher transportation efficiency, enhanced comfort in services, and greater eco-friendliness. The smart railway is expected to integrate fifth-generation mobile communication (5G), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other technologies, which poses new problems in the construction, operation and maintenance of railway wireless networks. Wireless Digital Twins (DTs), which have recently emerged as a new paradigm for the design of wireless networks, can address these problems and enable the whole lifecycle management of railway wireless networks. However, there are still many scientific issues and challenges for railway-oriented wireless DT. Relevant key technologies to solve these problems are introduced and described, including characterization of materials' physical-EM properties, autonomous reconstruction of Three-dimensional (3D) environment model, AI-empowered environmental cognition, Ray-Tracing (RT), model-based and AI-based RT acceleration, and generation of multi-spectra sensing data. Moreover, this paper presents our research results for each key technology and describes the wireless network planning and optimization system based on high-performance RT developed by our laboratory. This paper outlines the framework for realizing the wireless DT of smart railways, providing the direction for future research.

Abstract:GSM-R is predicted to be obsoleted by 2030, and a suitable successor is needed. Defined by the International Union of Railways (UIC), the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) contains many future use cases with strict requirements. These use cases should ensure regular communication not only in network coverage but also uncovered scenarios. There is still a lack of standards on off-network communication in FRMCS, so this article focuses on off-network communication and intends to provide reference and direction for standardization. We first provide a comprehensive summary and analysis of off-network use cases in FRMCS. Then we give an overview of existing technologies (GSM-R, TETRA, DMR, LTE-V2X, and NR-V2X) that may support off-network communication. In addition, we simulate and evaluate the performance of existing technologies. Simulation results show that it is possible to satisfy the off-network communication requirements in FRMCS with enhancements based on LTE-V2X or NR-V2X. Finally, we give some future research directions to provide insights for industry and academia.

Abstract:The demand for a broadband wireless connection is nowadays no longer limited to stationary situations, but also required while traveling. Therefore, there exist combined efforts to provide wireless access also on High Speed Trains (HSTs), in order to add to the attractiveness of this means for transportation. Installing an additional relay on the train, to facilitate the communication, is an approach that has already been extensively discussed in literature. The possibility of a direct communication between the base station and the passenger has been neglected until now, despite it having numerous advantages. Therefore, a comparison between these two opposing approaches is presented in this paper, accompanied by a detailed discussion of the related aspects. The focus is set on the feasibility of the direct link approach, including simulation results. Further technical issues are also presented, especially regarding the interdependencies of the different aspects and providing a view of mobile- and train-operators on the topic.

Abstract:Time-sensitive network (TSN), as one of the latest real-time Ethernet techniques, has achieved great success in several scenarios that require strict communication latency and packet loss. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in time-sensitive networks and investigates the drawbacks of current vehicle networks. By introducing TSN into the TCMS backbone network, next-generation smart vehicles can achieve high-quality data transmissions. This paper also analyzes the priority of the vehicle data and calculates the time-aware shaper slot to ensure that the control data is not affected by the multimedia data. Using the proposed structure, experimental results suggest that the network efficiency can be improved in the rail transit systems.
