Abstract:High performance and multifunctional are the two main emphases in the study of polymer damping materials. This paper reviews the latest research progress in polymer damping materials from the aspect of novel structural design of polymer networks and microstructure, including gradient structures, dynamic supramolecular networks, dangling chains based networks and low density porous structures. Meanwhile, the functionalization of polymer damping materials is also summarized, such as self-healing, shape-memory and recyclability. Furthermore, the development trends and future challenges in this field are discussed.

Abstract:In this work, a series of the thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPEE) filled with micro CaCO3 and hollow glass microspheres (HGM) via alloying process. Meanwhile, the processing-capability of composites was confirmed. SEM images showed that the CaCO3 was uniformly dispersed in TPEE matrix with similar to 3 mu m scale aggregates, while the HGM was slightly aggregated to similar to 13 mu m scale. The heterogeneous dispersion of micro-scale fillers strongly affected the sound transmission loss (STL) value of composites. The sound insulation property was measured by a four microphone impedance tube. Compared to pure polymer sample, both CaCO3 and HGM filled TPEE composite exhibited greatly enhanced soundproof efficiency. The damping of acoustic energy was contributed by the extended difference of the stiffness and acoustic impedance between hard segment and soft segment. The dispersion and property of inorganic fillers were considered for key roles to increase the dissipation of sound wave. Meanwhile, the mechanical of TPEE composites was enhanced due to the addition of inorganic fillers.

Abstract:This work describes the effects of tailoring the morphology of the re-agglomeration network and interfacial bonding by embedding poly(methyl methacrylate) decorated single wall nanotubes (SWNTs) into an epoxy resin. We report the time history of the re-agglomerations in the resin, and the rheological properties of the uncured suspensions to assess the effectiveness of the carbon nanotubes crosslinking on the curing process. A dispersion index was used to quantitatively evaluate the level of re-agglomeration. Both the pristine SWNTs and the polymer decorated SWNTs showed the effectiveness of re-agglomeration in improving rheological storage and loss modulus up to 770% and 50% respectively comparing with samples containing uniformly dispersed filler structure, suggested a novel filler arrangement for optimum composites damping performance. Dynamic mechanical analyser tests of the cured composites show that the re-agglomeration provides an increase of the energy dissipation capability when an appropriate interfacial bonding is in place. These results suggest that the morphology of re-agglomerates offers an effective interesting nano-reinforcement architecture for composites targeted at energy absorption and vibration damping.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.

Abstract:The addition effects of organic small molecular substances N,N'-dicyclohexyl-benzothiazyl-2-sulfenamide (DZ) and 3,9-bis{ 1, 1-dimethyl-2[β-(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)propionyloxy]ethyl}-2,4,8, 10-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]-undecane (AO-80) on the dynamic mechanical properties of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), chlorinated polypropylene (CPP), acrylate rubber (ACM) and their blends were investigated. In the case of compatible systems such as CPE/DZ and ACM/AO-80, the height of the loss tangent (tanδ) peak of a matrix polymer (CPE or ACM) increases, and its peak position shifts to a higher temperature with the addition of DZ or AO-80. By contrast, for incompatible CPE/AO-80, a novel transition appeared above the glass transition temperature of CPE. This additional transition was assigned to dissociation of the intermolecular hydrogen bond between the α-hydrogen of CPE and the hydroxyl groups of AO-80 within the AO-80-rich domain. This will provide a new concept for developing damping material. However, the minimum value between two tanδ peaks is lower. It was found that the temperature dependence of tanδ could be improved by adding chlorinated paraffin (CP) or ACM to CPE/AO-80. In addition, another ternary system of ACM/CPP with more AO-80 was found to be a very good self-adhesive damping material because of the appearance of a novel transition due to an interfacial layer of ACM/CPP.

Abstract:Vibration and noise severely affect the operation of mechanical equipment and is also detrimental to human health. Therefore, the development of high performance damping materials is crucial. However, current methods to improve damping properties often come at the expense of mechanical properties, resulting in inferior mechanical performance of materials. In order to address the issue of imbalance between damping properties and mechanical properties in polyurethane damping elastomers. In this study, polyester dangling chains containing polar groups are synthesized and introduced into polyurethane. The obtained polyurethane exhibited an effective damping temperature range of 154 °C (-54 °C to 100 °C) and a tensile strength of 15.82 MPa. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical analysis and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy are combined to investigate the influence of polar dangling chains on the structure and properties of polyurethane. The degree of microphase separation increases after the introduction of polar dangling chains, indicating enhances intermolecular interaction forces, facilitating the formation of hydrogen bond between the main chain and dangling chains, thereby increasing molecular chain friction and energy dissipation. This work overcomes the challenge of balancing the damping and mechanical properties of polyurethane, providing a new strategy for designing high performance polyurethane damping elastomers.
Enhancing energy dissipation properties of damping styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer materials by hydrogen bonding

Abstract:Mimicking the unique structure of biological tissue and energy dissipation mechanism of biology, various damping materials have been fabricated to provide impact protection. Utilizing the viscoelasticity of polymers around glass transition temperature, polymer materials generally are used as damping materials. However, it is still a great challenge to tailor the energy dissipation capacity and working temperature of damping materials. Here, we report an approach to adjust the energy-dissipation performance of polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene ( SBS) triblock polymer materials by incorporating distinct hydrogen-bonding moieties on the side groups of polybutadiene soft segment. The hydrogen bonding moieties reinforce the interaction between polymer chains and significantly improved the energy-dissipation capacity of SBS elastomers. Especially, when carbamate moieties are incorporated on the soft segment of SBS and SBS-U-2 is afforded. The hydrogen bonds deriving from carbamate moieties significantly increase the viscoelasticity of SBS-U-2 and provide excellent energy dissipation capacity. The current work provides a facile approach to fabricate damping materials based on engineering polymeric materials.

Abstract:Structural damping largely determines the dynamic properties of mechanical structures, especially those whose functioning is accompanied by time-varying loads. These loads may cause vibrations of a different nature, which adversely affects the functionality of the structure. Therefore, many studies have been carried out on vibration reduction methods over the last few years. Among them, the passive vibration damping method, wherein a suitable polymer system with appropriate viscoelastic properties is used, emerges as one of the simplest and most effective methods. In this view, a novel approach to conduct passive elimination of vibrations, consisting of covering elements of structures with low dynamic stiffness with polymeric pads, was developed. Herein, polymer covers were manufactured via fused filament fabrication technology (3D printing) and were joined to the structure by means of a press connection. Current work was focused on determining the damping properties of chosen polymeric materials, including thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). All investigated materials were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and mechanical properties (tensile test and Shore hardness). Lastly, the damping ability of pads made from different types of polymers were evaluated by means of dynamic tests.

Abstract:A yolk–shell piezoelectric damping mechanism is demonstrated to enhance the energy dissipation path of mechanical to electrical to heat and improve damping capability. The strategy of introducing yolk–shell nanoparticles and conductive network applies to various resin matrix exhibits a significant enhancement effect, providing a facile and effective path to improve damping performance and reduce vibration for broad application prospects. High‐performance damping materials are significant toward reducing vibration and maintaining stability for industrial applications. Herein, a yolk–shell piezoelectric damping mechanism is reported, which can enhance mechanical energy dissipation and improve damping capability. With the addition of yolk–shell particles and carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive network, damping properties of various resin matrices are enhanced with the energy dissipation path of mechanical to electrical to heat energy. Particularly, the peak loss factor of epoxy composites reaches 1.91 and tan δ area increases by 25.72% at 20 °C. The results prove the general applicability of yolk–shell piezoelectric damping mechanism. Besides, the novel damping materials also exhibit excellent flexibility, stretchability, and resilience, offering a promising application toward damping coating, indicating broad scope of application in transportation and sophisticated electronics, etc.

Abstract:Based on its excellent damping properties, traditional rubber has been widely used in various industries, including aerospace, rail transit and automotive. However, the disadvantages of effective damping area, unstable damping performance, easy fatigue, and aging, greatly limited the further application of rubber materials. Thus, it is important to develop novel modified rubber damping materials. Herein, polyamidoamine dendrimers with terminal-modified phenolic hydroxyl and amine groups (G2 PAMAM-H) were designed and used as modifiers to improve the damping performance of chlorinated butyl rubber (CIIR). The results showed that the modification of G2 PAMAM by diphenolic acid can avoid its aggregation in the CIIR matrix. CIIR/G2 PAMAM-H nanocomposites exhibited high tan δ max of 1.52 and wide damping temperature region of 140°C (tan δ > 0.55)at a very low loading (4.32 wt.%), which were strongerthan that of pure CIIR and CIIR/G2 PAMAM nanocomposites. In addition, these nanocomposites also exhibited a unique self-healing ability by multiple hydrogen bonds, which can effectively extend the life of the rubber material in actual production. Therefore, the dendrimer modification provided unique development opportunities for elastomers in certain highly engineered fields, such as vehicles, rail transit, aerospace, etc.GRAPHICAL

The crosslinking directing dynamic behavior of polymer latex under the investigation toward waterborne damping coatings

Abstract:Latex polymers with precisely designed dynamic mechanical behavior are the key for waterborne damping coatings, which are widely desired in noise and vibration reduction with additional environmental benefits. In this work, we synthesized series of polymer latexes with various crosslinking agents (CA) and network distributions through the control on emulsion polymerization processes. We have revealed that the variation on crosslinking can significantly direct the latex behavior under dynamic conditions as well as its films. The variables involve the CA composition, the functionality, the crosslinking manner, the hydrophilic‐hydrophobic feature as well as the feeding method. Although all the latex films showed the damping peaks locating in the range from −10 to 70°C, their damping behaviors were quite different. Suggested by the empirical parameters of LA and TA, the product from sequential monomer feeding method tended to give good extensional damping performance. Especially when the crosslinking of diacetone acrylamide (DAAM)/adipic dihydrazide was applied, there was a linear increase on LA with the increasing dosage of DAAM from 0 to 10 mmol in the final monomer addition batch. Meanwhile, good constrained layer damping is expected on the products from the power monomer feeding method with the maximum CA dosage shown below 7.5 mmol. The best TA was achieved when the CA of divinylbenzene was used in the dosage of 5 mmol. These results would be valuable to be referenced in the engineering on organic damping materials toward modern industrial and vehicles applications.

Abstract:A series of polyurethane (PU) composites, which could be used as damping materials, with different contents of hydroxyl silicone oil were successfully prepared in this study. The damping and mechanical properties, thermal stability, and molecular groups of the PU composites were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis, electronic tensile analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. The surface morphology was also observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR spectroscopy showed that the hydroxyl silicone oil was embedded in the PU. The soft and hard segments of the PU composites appeared thermodynamically incompatible and showed microphase separation, as shown by the SEM pictures. The PU composite with 8% hydroxyl silicone oil was found to possess the best synthetic properties among these composites. The maximum values of tan were 0.376, 0.561, and 0.573 at 1, 10, and 20 Hz, respectively. The temperature range for the use of damping materials becomes wider at 1 Hz. A multi-functional polyurethane elastomer with high damping, water resistance and flame retardancy

Abstract:Polyurethane elastomer has become a current focal point in the field of damping materials due to superior comprehensive properties. However, its effective damping temperature range is limited, and existing methods often lead to a reduction in mechanical performance. Moreover, polyurethane exhibits poor water resistance and flame resistance, constraining its applications. In this study, we introduce a small amount of dangling chain and aromatic dynamic disulfide bond into polyurethane to achieve a balance between damping and mechanical performance. Notably, the fluorinated dangling chain improves water resistance of the material synchronously and effectively. Additionally, ammonium polyphosphate modified by melamine and diethyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethylphosphonate are introduced into polyurethane to improve flame resistance. The prepared polyurethane elastomer exhibits excellent comprehensive performance, featuring an effective damping (tanδ≥0.3) temperature range of 153.2 °C (−53.2 °C ~ 100 °C), V-0 level flame resistance and excellent water resistance. Meanwhile, the heat stability of the polyurethane elastomer has been significantly enhanced, while maintaining a certain level of mechanical performance (9.72 ± 0.25 MPa, 602.4 ± 30.1%). These improvements extend the service life of polyurethane and expand its range of potential applications.

Abstract:Polymer foams are widely used owing to their distinctive cell structure and properties. However, polymer foams prepared by traditional foaming technologies are mainly from commodity polymers due to the difficulties of foaming at high temperature and have the problems such as poor mechanical properties and heat resistance, limited composition and functions, susceptibility to combustion, and challenges in achieving flame retardancy. This article presented a comprehensive review of our research on polymer foams that exhibit high performances and multiple functions. The study encompassed advanced foaming equipment, high‐temperature foaming of supercritical carbon dioxide, foaming of polymer‐based micro/nano‐functional composites, microwave selective sintering and foaming, as well as the development of novel polymer foams derived from engineering plastics and special engineering plastics, water‐soluble poly(vinyl alcohol), and multi‐functional polymer composites, which could not be prepared by the traditional foaming technologies. These advancements broaden the potential application fields of polymer foams.

Controllable Design and Preparation of Hydroxyl-Terminated Solution-Polymerized Styrene Butadiene for Polyurethane Elastomers with High-Damping Properties

Abstract:Vibration and noise are ubiquitous in social life, which severely damage machinery and adversely affect human health. Thus, the development of materials with high-damping performance is of great importance. Rubbers are typically used as damping materials because of their unique viscoelasticity. However, they do not satisfy the requirements of different applications with various working conditions. In this study, the advantages of the high loss factor of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) are combined with the strong designability of polyurethane. Hydroxyl-terminated solution-polymerized styrene butadiene rubbers (HTSSBRs) with different structures are prepared using anionic polymerization. HTSSBRs are then used as the soft segment during the synthesis of temperature-tunable high-damping performance polyurethanes (HTSSBR-polyurethanes (PUs)). The prepared HTSSBR-PUs with different structures exhibit excellent loss performance, a maximum loss factor (tan δmax ) of above 1.60, and an effective damping performance over a wide temperature range compared to traditional SBR and polyurethane. Therefore, this work offers an effective method for the design of damping materials with adjustable properties.

Hyperbranched Vitrimer for Ultrahigh Energy Dissipation

Abstract:Polymers are ideally utilized as damping materials due to the high internal friction of molecular chains, enabling effective suppression of vibrations and noises in various fields. Current strategies rely on broadening the glass transition region or introducing additional relaxation components to enhance the energy dissipation capacity of polymeric damping materials. However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve high damping efficiency through structural control while maintaining dynamic characteristics. In this work, we propose a new strategy to develop hyperbranched vitrimers (HBVs) containing dense pendant chains and loose dynamic crosslinked networks. A novel yet weak dynamic transesterification between the carboxyl and boronic acid ester was confirmed and used to prepare HBVs based on poly (hexyl methacrylate-2-(4-ethenylphenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborinane) P(HMA-co-ViCL) copolymers. The ABn-type of macromonomers, the crosslinking points formed by the dynamic covalent connection via the associative exchange, and the weak yet dynamic exchange reaction are the three keys to developing high-performance HBV damping materials. We found that P(HMA-co-ViCL) 20k-40-60 HBV exhibited ultrahigh energy-dissipation performance over a broad frequency and temperature range, attributed to the synergistic effect of dense pendant chains and weak dynamic covalent crosslinks. This unique design concept will provide a general approach to developing advanced damping materials.

Abstract:Elastomeric damping materials are essential in modern life. Apart from natural rubber, conventional elastomers are mostly based on petroleum-based sources. Moreover, elastomers exhibit excellent damping properties in the glass transition region, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of elastomers is lower than room temperature, resulting in poor damping properties at room temperature. However, because of limited and unsustainable petrochemical resources and environmental pollution, sustainable development and green environmental protection have become important principles in the design of damping materials, and most damping materials are used at room temperature. Therefore, designing bio-based materials with high damping properties at room temperature to replace conventional cross-linked rubber materials is crucial. Herein, we prepared bio-based millable polyurethane (bio-MPU)/hindered phenol 3,9-bis-{1,1-dimethyl-2[β-(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl-)propionyloxy]ethyl}-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro (Wang et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016) [5,5]-undecane (AO-80) composites to overcome the challenge of sustainable development and high damping properties at room temperature. Bio-MPU samples with high Tg were synthesized from bio-based modified polylactic acid-based polyols, 4, 4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and unsaturated chain extender 3-allyloxy-1, 2-propanediol. AO-80 was mixed with bio-MPU to further increase the Tg and enhance the damping properties of the bio-MPU/AO-80 composites. The properties of the bio-MPUs and bio-MPU/AO-80 composites were systematically evaluated. This study proposes a strategy to design high damping properties from bio-based raw materials and reduce our dependence on fossil resources.
