Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to design a reasonable joining path and achieve assembly automation for multiple arc-shaped panels. A fuselage panel is primarily composed of skins, stringers, frames and clips. Both inserted and nested structures are adopted in the panels to improve the strength and hermeticity of the fuselage. Due to the complex structures and relationships, it is a challenge to coordinate the arc-shaped panels in the assembly process.Design/methodology/approach - A motion sequence model which achieves arc approximation based on the relative motion of multiple panels is established. The initial position of the panels is obtained by decomposing the computer-aided design model of the panels. Two translation rules, i.e. progressively decreasing translation and limited deformation translation, are applied to determine the moving path of the panels. If a panel is not at its path node, a search algorithm is used to find the nearest path node. Finally, the key algorithms are implemented in an integration system to promote joining automation of multiple panels.Findings - The zigzag path is effective for the joining of multiple panels with complex mating relationships. The automation of the join-separate-rejoin operations is time-saving and safety-assuring. The proposed method is demonstrated in practical engineering and a good efficiency is obtained.Practical implications - This method has been used in a middle fuselage assembly project. The practical results show that the zigzag path is convenient to be stored and reused, and the synchronous movements of multiple curved panels are precisely realized. Additionally, the posture accuracy of panels is significantly improved, and the operating time is reduced considerably.Originality/value - This paper gives a solution including path planning and process integration to solve the joining problem of multiple panels. The research will promote the automation of fuselage assembly.

Abstract:This paper describes a framework for an automotive body assembly process design system. It is a computer-aided intelligent system that can automatically generate the optimal joint types and assembly sequences for the best dimensional quality. The backbone of this system is the Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) methodology, which works by searching through a case library created from previous designs whose identifying features resemble the current case. Algorithms for initial solution generation, dimension chain generation, joint design selections, assembly sequence generation, and tolerance analysis and optimization are developed. Based on the framework, a software tool called Body Build Advisor, or BBA, is developed. The software allows process designers to analyze candidate assembly schemes and achieve the best assembly process design prior to having detailed knowledge of geometry of the parts, and thus is ideal for architectural process design. In addition, the system has the advantage of an open structure that can be easily modified and adapted to accommodate existing assemblies and to suggest areas for improvement.

Abstract:Abstract The modern society greatly utilizes automobiles to fulfill the requirements of transport, and it is logically necessary to research the most efficient joinery method arrangements to construct automobiles. In the contemporary stage of joinery technology, the three mainstream methods are bolting, riveting and welding, and among these joinery methods, bolting could be used for cylinder head and cylinder block, riveting might be the most suitable means for aluminum alloy and steel in vehicle., and welding would be most appropriate for doors, bottom plates and body assemblies. These different methods have various advantages and disadvantages in their applications, as their theories and principles are all but the same. This paper also discussed the methods of joinery that should be used in parts of the automobile body and the future expectation of more novel connection methods that would appear to replace traditional ones.

Abstract:Virtual Prototyping (VP) technology has been studied in mechanical dynamic simulation. Aim to fit competitive market demand on auto-body R&D, this paper firstly introduces this engineering innovation to complex auto-body sheet metal assembly simulation. A VP modeling for it is presented which contains five sub-models. Firstly, it includes assembly hierarchy model, representing how those sub-assemblies are put together from different assembly level. The second is assembly behavior model that represents exclusive properties of sheet metal assembly. The third is assembly variation model describing the assembly variation. The fourth is assembly environment model, stating the real body-shop situation and finally, a data management system supporting the design data integration and collaboration. In our primary research practice, the virtual prototyping can support auto-body design and manufacturing in a cost-effective and time-reduced way.

Abstract:Based on the stream-of-variation theory, some key techniques for automotive body assembly, such as the optimum design for fixture, the variation analysis and synthesis of the deformable sheet metal assembly, the on-line measurement, the failure diagnosis and the adaptive error compensation, are surveyed by means of the concurrent engineering.The dialectical relation between design-oriented variation control and manufacturing-oriented variation control has been discussed,then the system'model for variation control is presented on the basis of the proposed database of stream-of-variation and the inspecting station of stream-of-variation. The data base of stream-of-varitaion and the this system'molel enrich the princiral theory of stream-of-variation for automotive body assembly.

Abstract:The appearance, comfort and safety of car can be affected by the quality of interior trimming assembly. The traditional checking fixtures and CMMs have been widely used in the quality inspection of autobody parts and their assembly, but this can not show the error of assembly and the dimensional relationship of the parts. The paper gives the method, which uses the visual assembly, CMMs measurement and CAD modeling to analyze the variation.

Abstract:DFA (design for assembly) is an approach to designing products with ease of assembly in mind. Multilayer assembly system construction and possible assembly sequencing are important information for DFA, especially at the prototype design stage of an automobile. This paper aims to help automobile designers construct a hierarchical assembly system, develop a systematic approach to automated subassembly detection, and assembly sequencing in automobile body assembly planning. Modeling of an automobile assembly is given, based on precedence knowledge among automobile parts. Algorithms to detect possible subassemblies with two-step verification and to generate all available sequences are also developed in this study.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems

Abstract:To solve the high cost problem and shorten development period in traditional auto-body assembly design using trial-and-error on physical prototype, an integrated assembly framework was proposed based on virtual prototype technology. It consisted of three sub-models, including assembly modeling based on welding-assembly characteristics, variance transmission computation model and assembly environment simulation model. With interface-based method, multi-disciplinary data of assembly design and process information could be well organized and accessed on PDM platforms. A case study of front floor assembly was conducted to illustrate that the proposed VP-based framework could effectively reduce auto-body assembly design cost and shorten development period.

Abstract:This paper describes a procedure to automatically derive all the feasible assembly sequences for automobile body assembly. This procedure is based on a mathematical model of the automobile body, obtained through the definitions of the connection matrix and the contracted matrix. These two matrices represent the precedence constraint knowledge among components and sub-assemblies. The possible sub-assemblies are automatically detected by satisfying some mathematical conditions applicable to these matrices. For each sub-assembly and the whole product, all the possible assembly sequences are generated by rearranging the initial connection sub-matrix and the contracted matrix. Abstract:In the process of autobody assembly, the gap between the sheet metal parts introduced by the variations of stamping, location of fixturing is inevitable. As the most widely used joining style, spot welding makes the variation stack up. According to the characteristics of the autobody assembly, the 1/2 axisymmetric model is proposed and the finite element method is applied to analyze the contacting problem and assembly deformation under the squeezing force and electrothermal process. The contact distributions among electrodes and parts and the transient thermal analysis are fulfilled counting for the effects of the gap. The conclusion is provided for the simplification of the autobody assembly variation analysis.

Abstract:The body assembly process design (BAPD) system is currently under development at the laboratory of Auto Body Manufacture Technology Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. To ensure that assembly issues have been properly considered in the conceptual design phase, different methods, procedures and tools should be developed. The paper gives a brief view of the system architecture of the BAPD system, and the paper will present a framework to carry qualitative simulation procedure and conduct hierarchical qualitative simulation to analyze and predict assembly variation flow with limited parameters and fuzzy knowledge; the system conducts qualitative information acquisition of physical parameters of assembly features, and obtains cardinal factors influence the variation results by qualitative analysis in the assembly process. An analytical case is discussed to explain the function of qualitative analysis.

Abstract:To meet high assembly quality requirements,the current tolerance allocation scheme for automotive body assembly is to tighten the assembly tolerance,but the tight tolerance will not only increase manufacturing cost but sometimes exceed the manufacturing capability as well.In this paper, a finite element tolerance allocation methodology based on FEM is developed for sheet metal assembly.This methodology is capable of determining the maximum allowable manufacturing tolerance for components before assembly,which will reduce manufacturing cost and also ensures automotive body welding quality.This method enables a tolerance allocation to be used in the stamping process for automotive body assembly.

Abstract:Variations in parts and tooling are a major problem in automobile body assembly processes. Those discrepancies adversely affect body assembly quality, functionality, cost and time-to-market. Variation simulation analysis has been used in the design stage to predict such uncertainties, but variation analysis based on rigid body assumptions usually yields over-estimates of the assembly variations. This paper presents a new numerical simulation method for the assembly process incorporating compliant non-ideal parts. This method considers the interaction and interference between compliant parts due to part variation, assembly tooling variation, welding distortion, and spring back effects. A butt-to-butt joint assembly example is used to illustrate the effects of various variation causes. A three-parts assembly example examines the assembly and welding sequences. Results from these two examples demonstrate that the proposed method is theoretically sound and practically useful.

Abstract:Research investigations have shown that the dimensional quality is deeply rooted in the whole process of the product development, from product, process and tooling design, the tooling manufacturing process, to the production. Unlike rigid body assembly, automotive body assembly has its unique characteristics. The final dimensions of automotive bodies depend not only on the variations/deviations and rigidity of components, tooling/process variation, but also on the product structure, connection type and assembly sequence. An adaptive strategy for automotive body development is here by presented to exploit these unique features. By the adaptive product, process and tooling design strategy, the dimensional variation/deviation for the key dimensions can be significantly reduced and the die tryout time be shorten with significant cost saving.

Abstract:A method of 3-D measuring fixture automatic assembly for auto-body part is presented. Locating constraint mapping technique and assembly rule-based reasoning are applied. Calculating algorithm of the position and pose for the part model, fixture configuration and fixture elements in virtual auto-body assembly space are given. Transforming fixture element from itself coordinate system space to assembly space with homogeneous transformation matrix is realized. Based on the second development technique of unigraphics(UG), the automated assembly is implemented with application program interface (API) function. Lastly the automated assembly of measuring fixture for rear longeron as a case is implemented.

Abstract:The current status of research and development of tolerance design,qualitative simulation and qualitative modeling are briefly reviewed.The engineering application of qualitative simulation in auto-body conceptual assembly design phase,the feasibility analysis of qualitative assembly and the qualitative tolerance analysis of auto-body assembly are investigated for the first time.The simulation system extracts the qualitative information on physical parameters of assembly features,and determines key factors affecting deviation accumulation in assembly process by means of qualitative analysis.
