Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel coupling method, direct coupling method, for double metal-cladding waveguide which is free from using the prism, grating or other coupling elements. The double metal-cladding waveguide used in our experiment is a metal-dielectric-metal three layer structure. Through ATR scanning technique, we demonstrate that light could be directly coupled into the waveguide successfully with this structure. The direct coupling method not only avoids the difficulty of grating fabrication process in grating coupling method, but also the coupling gap adjustment problem in prism coupling method. The application of this coupling method keeps advantages of the prism coupling technique in the optical parameters measurement for thin films. It also has some extra advantages. Since high order modes could be coupled into thick film waveguide while it is hard for prism coupling technique, the thickness of thick films (0.1mm-1mm) can be determined. Moreover, light can be coupled at any position on the surface of the waveguide, thus it can be used to detect almost the whole area of the film. Our experimental results agree well with the theoretical prediction.
A Direct Near-Field Observation of Conversion Between Waveguide Modes and Leaky Modes in Periodic Metal Structures

Abstract:In order to directly observe the conversion between guided-wave modes and leaky-wave modes in a periodic structure, quadrilateral periodic metal diaphragms arranged in two ways on metal surfaces were analyzed. In the first scheme, each unit cell in the periodic structure contains a metal diaphragm, of which the dispersion characteristics of periodic structures were analyzed by the finite element method. The results of the numerical simulation show that by adjusting lattice constants of periodic structures and geometrical parameters of metal diaphragms, the transmission bandwidth of the present 1-D periodic metal diaphragm structures could be limited to X-band, where the transmission characteristics are easy to be measured. In the second scheme, a pair of mirror-symmetric and staggered quadrilateral metal diaphragms is introduced into a unit cell. It can be found in the theoretical calculation that a new dispersion curve, which passes through the light line in a high frequency range, can be exhibited. The propagation constants of dispersion curves become complex numbers and provide highly directional electromagnetic radiation that scans as the frequency changes. After the relative positions of the two metal diaphragms were properly adjusted, the frequency range of the forbidden band gap between two dispersion curves can be minimized, so as to increase the transmission bandwidth of the 1-D periodic metal structures. The experimentally measured results show that the dispersion curves of the two periodic structures were highly consistent with the theoretical results. The narrowing of the band gap could be verified by measuring the $S$ -parameters. The near-field measurement of the periodic metal structures can demonstrate the conversion between the guided-wave modes and the leaky-wave modes, and the far-field measurement can show the frequency dependence of beam elevation. We expect that these artificial material structures could be widely used for designing new microwave and terahertz band devices.

Abstract:Based on the metallic-dielectric high contrast gratings, we proposed two new different schemes to achieve the unidirectional coupling of incident free-space light into the plasmonic waveguides. Using the cascaded metal-air sub-gratings (structure 1) or metallic-dielectric subwavelength periodic gratings (structure 2), the ultra-broadband and wide-angular SPPs excitation could be both achieved. The operation principle and performance of the structures are analyzed and discussed, respectively.

Abstract:We report on a coupling method, which transfers energy of a light beam from free space into a symmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide from the top surface without employing the prism, grating, tapered film, and other coupling components. In the experiment, a glass flat with a thickness about 100 μm, sandwiched between two gold films is used as a guiding layer. A top gold film of 46 nm thick serves as a coupling layer as well as the cladding and a base gold film of 200 nm serves as the substrate of the waveguide. Up to 50% of the incident light energy fed into the waveguide has been demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel dual-band tandem coupler with an arbitrary coupling coefficient is proposed and experimentally proved in this paper. The coupler consists of a typical tandem coupler and an additional transmission line placed between the two pairs of coupled lines. The coupler has a simple structure and can realize arbitrary coupling coefficients over two designated frequencies. Design equations are derived for designing the parameters of the proposed coupler. A prototype of the proposed coupler which operates at 0.9/1.5 GHz with -6dB coupling coefficient is designed, fabricated and measured. The measured results agree well with the EM simulated results.

Abstract:An optical glass slab,which is coated with two metal films with different thickness on both sides,is used to form a new type of ultrathick double metal-cladding optical waveguide with submillimeter-scale.Excitation of the ultrahigh-order modes are implemented by employing the free-space coupling technique.Based on the unusual features of the ultrahigh-order modes,wavelength-sensitive and polarization-insensitive,ultra-narrow bandwidth filtering(0.08 nm) and comb filtering(channel spacing 100 GHz) with tunable,low loss(0.5 dB) and polarization-insensitive operation capabilities are demonstrated experimentally.
Efficient Waveguide Coupler Based on Metal Materials

Abstract:Because of the diffraction limit of light, the scale of optical element stays in the order of wavelength, which makes the interface optics and nano-electronic components cannot be directly matched, thus the development of photonics technology encounters a bottleneck. In order to solve the problem that coupling of light into the subwavelength waveguide, this paper proposes a model of coupler based on metal materials. By using Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) wave, incident light can be efficiently coupled into waveguide of diameter less than 100 nm. This paper mainly aims at near infrared wave band, and tests a variety of the combination of metal materials, and by changing the structural parameters to get the maximum coupling efficiency. This structure splits the plane incident light with wavelength of 864 nm, the width of 600 nm into two uniform beams, and separately coupled into the waveguide layer whose width is only about 80 nm, and the highest coupling efficiency can reach above 95%. Using SPPs structure will be an effective method to break through the diffraction limit and implement photonics device high-performance miniaturization. We can further compress the light into small scale fiber or waveguide by using the metal coupler, and to save the space to hold more fiber or waveguide layer, so that we can greatly improve the capacity of optical communication. In addition, high-performance miniaturization of the optical transmission medium can improve the integration of optical devices, also provide a feasible solution for the photon computer research and development in the future.
Structurally-tolerant Vertical Directional Coupling Between Metal-Insulator-metal Plasmonic Waveguide and Silicon Dielectric Waveguide

Abstract:Vertical directional coupling between a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The coupling length, extinction ratio, insertion loss and coupling efficiency of the hybrid coupler are analyzed. As an example, when the separation between the two waveguides is 250 nm, a maximum coupling efficiency of 73%, an insertion loss of -1.4 dB and an extinction ratio of 16 dB can be achieved at a coupling length of 4.5 microm at 1.55 microm wavelength. A particular feature of this hybrid coupler is that it is highly tolerant to the structural parameters of the plasmonic waveguide and the misalignment between the two waveguides. The performance of this hybrid coupler as a TM polarizer is also analyzed and a maximum extinction ratio of 44 dB and an insertion loss of -0.18 dB can be obtained. The application of this hybrid coupler includes the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and the polarization control between TE and TM modes. In addition, it provides an approach for efficiently exciting MIM plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, it can be exploited to efficiently excite hybrid plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:Novel conical reflection of light by a thick three-layered metal-clad optical waveguide is observed. A symmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide is used, which exhibits extraordinary conical reflection during free-space coupling of light to the waveguide. The phenomenon is attributed to the leakage of excited ultrahigh-order guided modes and their inter- and intramode coupling interaction.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber-to-slot-waveguide grating coupler based on a double-strip waveguide, together with a double-strip-to-slot waveguide mode converter. By employing the double-strip waveguide, we improve the coupling efficiency from a fiber to the slot waveguide by similar to 1.2 dB, compared with previous grating-based two-stage schemes. In addition, the double-strip-to-slot waveguide mode converter, consisting of two S bends and a taper pair, occupies a short conversion length of only 4 mu m. Parameters, including taper length and S-bend length are numerically optimized. Bandwidth and fabrication error tolerance are also analyzed. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The transmission characteristics of the coupled-resonator optical waveguides based on the two-dimensional triangular-lattice photonic crystal are studied by the multiple-scattering methods and the finite-difference time-domain method.Through selective inserting the rods with different radius between two adjacent microcavities,the coupling intensity between the two adjacent point defects is weaken,and the group velocity can be further reduced by three orders of magnitude.

Abstract:The contradirectional coupling between a pair of planar dielectric waveguides, whose guiding layers are respectively a negative index medium and a positive index medium (PIM, i.e., the conventional medium), is theoretically investigated using the coupled mode theory. It is shown that, by tapering the middle segment of the PIM guiding layer to introduce a certain phase shift, the energy flow circulation can be established based on the contradirectional coupling effect, and, thus, the electromagnetic energy is localized in the waveguide system. This phenomenon is further verified numerically with the finite-difference time domain method. The quality factor of this open waveguide cavity is also discussed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Inefficient coupling between dielectric guided mode and plasmon mode has been overlooked in the past. The coupling mechanism is essentially different from the conventional coupling between dielectric modes. Based on qualitative theoretical analysis, we proposed two methods to strengthen the coupling between dielectric waveguide modes and exterior plasmon whispering gallery modes. One is using a U-shaped bent waveguide to break the adiabatic mode conversion process, and the other is to utilize higher-order dielectric mode to reach phase matching with plasmon mode. Both the transmission spectrum of waveguide and the energy spectrum of cavity demonstrate that the coupling efficiency can be greatly improved. These simple configurations are potential for wide applications, for example, tunable integrated optical devices and sensors.

Abstract:We propose a cladding engineering method that flexibly modifies the radiation patterns and rates of metal-clad nanoscale optical cavity. Optimally adjusting the cladding symmetry of the metal-clad nanoscale optical cavity modifies the modal symmetry and produces highly directional radiation that leads to 90% coupling efficiency into an integrated waveguide. In addition, the radiation rate of the cavity mode can be matched to its absorption rate by adjusting the thickness of the bottom-cladding layer. This approach optimizes the energy-flow rate from the waveguide and maximizes the energy confined inside the nanoscale optical cavity.

Abstract:A metallic heterowaveguide array, which is alternatively stacked by two kinds of metal-insulator-metal waveguides in a dual-periodic arrangement, has been investigated numerically. Based on the transfer matrix method and the principle of plasmon Bragg reflector, multi-resonant surface plasmon modes with high quality factors have been predicted in the structure. The number of the resonant modes, the corresponding center wavelengths as well as the mode intervals can be controlled flexibly by adjusting the structure parameters. Numerical simulations performed by the finite element method show good agreement with the predication of the transfer matrix method. Our results could be applied for the future surface-plasmon based wavelength division multiplexers at the telecommunication band, multi-channel filters, and multi-wavelength light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:High efficiency coupling from fiber to slot and strip waveguides using a double-tip coupler is presented. The double tips are inverse tapered, while their distance is decreased. The coupling efficiency reaches 90.9% with a taper length of only 30μm for coupling fiber to slot waveguides. With a mode transformer, the slot waveguide mode can be converted to strip waveguide mode with an efficiency of 99.3% in a length of 15μm. The impact of several parameters, such as distance between tips, taper length, and tip-end width, are simulated and optimized to improve the coupling efficiency. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Abstract:Traditional waveguide couplers are always with large volume, nonneglectable reflection and distortion of beam profile. To provide a possible solution, some transformation optics based strategies have been proposed, however, implementation of the constitutive parameters in these strategies is very challenging. In this letter, we propose a scheme of a full-parameter, broadband, homogeneous, and compact waveguide coupler. The waveguide coupler is designed with linear homogenous coordinate transformation method and with nearly nondispersive metamaterials. Simulation results on the waveguide coupler show nearly perfect beam profile preservation and an almost total transmission in a broad band. Our strategy may find potential applications in microwave and terahertz devices.
Low-loss Fiber-to-Waveguide Coupling Using Diffractive Optical Element

Abstract:An integrated diffractive optical element(DOE) mode converter was presented for lowloss coupling between singlemode fiber(SMF) and optical waveguide.The phase distribution of DOE is optimization result of iterative phase retrieval algorithm.A new mixed farfield amplitude constraint was introduced into the iteration to provide very high mode conversion quality.The scheme can be applied to any waveguide structure.For all the discussed waveguides in this paper,square core waveguides of various dimensions and various refractive index contrasts,and nonsquare structures such as thinfilm waveguide and ridge waveguide,the coupling losses are reduced to lower than 0.12 dB.
