Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized perfluorinated chemical widely used in industries. It is often released into the environment without treatment, which causes pollution in groundwater. Recently, we have reported a rapid and efficient removal of PFOA in aqueous solution by using a fountain-strip dielectric barrier discharge reactor (SF-DBD). This design allows for the gaseous-liquid interaction to happen in a large space at atmospheric pressure, so it is a promising method to efficiently remove PFOA from water. Recently, we reported the effects of the process parameters, including power mode, pulse time, sinusoidal wave discharge, the discharge gas, initial concentration, pH, conductivity, and positive and negative discharges, on the efficiency of this method for PFOA degradation. Understanding the reaction mechanism is key to further improve the efficiency of the system. In this work, we reported the decomposition mechanism of the SF-DBD for PFOA degradation. The mass spectrum (MS) showed that PFOA was degraded to perfluoroheptanoic acid, perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluoropentanoic acid, perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluoropropionic acid, and trifluoroacetic acid after the plasma treatment. The optical emission spectroscope (OES) and the radical scavenger experiments indicated that the excited argon atoms and hydroxyl radicals played a major role in PFOA degradation, while the contributions from the solvated electrons (e(aq)(-)), superoxide anion radical (center dot O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O(2)) were negligible in initiating the cleavage reaction.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) belong to the group of persistent organic pollutants due to their durability in the environment and general resistance to degradation. However, such compounds can act as electron acceptors, and thus become decomposed in the reductive dehalogenation processes. Consistent and accurate thermochemical data, such as the bond dissociation enthalpies (BDE) or Gibbs free energies (Δ G ), are essential for detailed chemical reaction models. Here, the DFT-based computational procedure of thermochemical cycle that includes gas phase homolytic dissociation of the C-F bond, then solvation of R-F, R • , and F • , followed by reduction of F • to F - in polar solutions has been employed. Along with isodesmic reactions, we calculated BDE for the C-F bonds, both gas phase Δ G and including the COSMO and SMD solvent models. Finally we estimated the standard reduction potential (SRP) of irreversible defluorination for ten selected PFASs. Starting from the values of SRP for the F • /F - pair calculated in water, and then including the transfer of F • and F - from water to the nonaqueous solvent (Δ G ), we calculated the SRPs of F • in acetonitrile (MeCN), dimethylformamide (DMF), methanol (MeOH), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The ERF-/R∙-+F-⊖ values (vs standard hydrogen electrode, SHE) obtained for aqueous solution are in the range of −1.28 to −0.76 V, whereas SRPs obtained in organic solvents (vs SCE aq ) are as follows: CH 3 CN (-2.24, −1.62), DMF (-1.97, −1.35), CH 3 OH (-1.47, −0.94), and DMSO (-2.19, −1.54) V. On the basis of the obtained results, the mechanism of reductive defluorination was discussed, using the liner free energy relationships (LFER) approach. Our findings show that for all investigated solvents the SRPs obtained when the intermediate is treated as the complex with an attached electron ( ERF-/R∙2-⊖ ) are more negative than those for dissociated products ( ERF-/R∙-+F-⊖ ). Hence, the former provide the criterion for the defluorination process to occur and determines the reaction rate.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificial chemical of global concern due to its high environmental persistence and potential human health risk. Electrochemical methods are promising technologies for water treatment because they are efficient, cheap, and scalable. The electrochemical reduction of PFOA is one of the current methodologies. This process leads to defluorination of the carbon chain to hydrogenated products. Here, we describe a mechanistic study of the electrochemical reduction of PFOA in gold electrodes. By using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), an E0' of -1.80 V vs Ag/AgCl was estimated. Using a scan rate diagnosis, we determined an electron-transfer coefficient (αexp) of 0.37, corresponding to a concerted mechanism. The strong adsorption of PFOA into the gold surface is confirmed by the Langmuir-like isotherm in the absence (KA = 1.89 × 1012 cm3 mol-1) and presence of a negative potential (KA = 3.94 × 107 cm3 mol-1, at -1.40 V vs Ag/AgCl). Based on Marcus-Hush's theory, calculations show a solvent reorganization energy (λ0) of 0.9 eV, suggesting a large electrostatic repulsion between the perfluorinated chain and water. The estimated free energy of the transition state of the electron transfer (ΔG‡ = 2.42 eV) suggests that it is thermodynamically the reaction-limiting step. 19F - 1H NMR, UV-vis, and mass spectrometry studies confirm the displacement of fluorine atoms by hydrogen. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also support the concerted mechanism for the reductive defluorination of PFOA, in agreement with the experimental values.

Abstract:Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are distributed throughout the environment. In the case of perfluorinated alkyl carboxylates and sulfonates, they can be classified as persistent organic pollutants since they are resistant to environmentally relevant reduction, oxidation, and hydrolytic processes. With this in mind, we report on the reductive defluorination of perfluorobutanoate, PFBA (C(3)F(7)CO(2)(-)), perfluorohexanoate, PFHA (C(5)F(11)CO(2)(-)), perfluorooctanoate, PFOA (C(7)F(15)CO(2)(-)), perfluorobutane sulfonate, PFBS (C(4)F(9)SO(3)(-)), perfluorohexane sulfonate, PFHS (C(6)F(13)SO(3)(-)), and perfluorooctane sulfonate, PFOS (C(8)F(17)SO(3)(-)) by aquated electrons, e(aq)(-), that are generated from the UV photolysis (lambda = 254 nm) of iodide. The ionic headgroup (-SO(3)(-) vs -CO(2)(-)) has a significant effect on the reduction kinetics and extent of defluorination (F index = -[F(-)](produced)/[PFC](degraded)). Perfluoroalkylsulfonate reduction kinetics and the F index increase linearly with increasing chain length. In contrast, perfluoroalkylcarboxylate chain length appears to have a negligible effect on the observed kinetics and the F index. H/F ratios in the gaseous fluoro-organic products are consistent with measured F indexes. Incomplete defluorination of the gaseous products suggests a reductive cleavage of the ionic headgroup occurs before complete defluorination. Detailed mechanisms involving initiation by aquated electrons are proposed.
Interpretation of Reductive PFAS Defluorination with Quantum Chemical Parameters

Abstract:Advanced reduction using hydrated electrons (eaq–) is a promising technology for the degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). To better characterize and understand intrinsic factors that influence reductive PFAS defluorination, we probed the relationships between quantum chemical parameters and the reported overall defluorination ratio (deF%) of multiple PFAS structural categories with quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) models. The Fukui index with respect to nucleophilic attack [f(+)], bond order (BOx), molecular size effect (EB3LYP), partial charge on carbon atoms [q(C–)n], and energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) are identified as the influencing factors. The optimal QSAR model with both mechanistic and statistic meanings is log10(deF%) = −4.333 – 68.710ELUMO – 5.873f(+)x, with the following evaluation indices: R2 = 0.815, q2 = 0.728, and Qext2 = 0.707. The f(+) distribution in PFAS and their degradation intermediates and the optimized structures of excited states support the reported decarboxylation and H/F exchange pathways. Microbial Cleavage of C-F Bonds in Two C6 Per- and Polyfluorinated Compounds via Reductive Defluorination

Abstract:The C-F bond is one of the strongest single bonds in nature. Although microbial reductive dehalogenation is well known for the other organohalides, no microbial reductive defluorination has been documented for perfluorinated compounds except for a single, nonreproducible study on trifluoroacetate. Here, we report on C-F bond cleavage in two C6 per- and polyfluorinated compounds via reductive defluorination by an organohalide-respiring microbial community. The reductive defluorination was demonstrated by the release of F- and the formation of the corresponding product when lactate was the electron donor, and the fluorinated compound was the sole electron acceptor. The major dechlorinating species in the seed culture, Dehalococcoides, were not responsible for the defluorination as no growth of Dehalococcoides or active expression of Dehalococcoides-reductive dehalogenases was observed. It suggests that minor phylogenetic groups in the community might be responsible for the reductive defluorination. These findings expand our fundamental knowledge of microbial reductive dehalogenation and warrant further studies on the enrichment, identification, and isolation of responsible microorganisms and enzymes. Given the wide use and emerging concerns of fluorinated organics (e.g., per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), particularly the perfluorinated ones, the discovery of microbial defluorination under common anaerobic conditions may provide valuable insights into the environmental fate and potential bioremediation strategies of these notorious contaminants.

Abstract:Remediation of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in global water systems is a critical human and environmental health challenge facing society. PFAS consumption is associated with a litany of adverse health effects, and our knowledge of these dangers is still evolving. Current techniques to remove PFAS from water include adsorption to media (e.g. granular activated carbon, ion-exchange resin), nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis. However, these processes create a concentrated PFAS residual that requires further management. Destructive techniques are therefore needed to detoxify these residuals. Oxidative techniques have garnered the most attention (e.g. supercritical water oxidation, electrochemical oxidation) but are energy intensive and potentially form toxic by-products. As an alternative, several groups have researched advanced reduction processes that form aqueous electrons, but these processes are still chemical and energy intensive (e.g. ultraviolet/SO 3 2 − , electron beam). This concise review therefore focuses on whether electrochemical reduction — a chemical-free, modular process — could be technically feasible for PFAS destruction.

Abstract:Photoinduced single-electron reduction is an efficient method for the mono-selective activation of the C-F bond on a trifluoromethyl group to construct a difluoroalkyl group. We have developed an electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex mediated single-electron transfer (EDA-SET) of α,α,α-trifluoromethyl arenes in the presence of lithium salt to give α,α-difluoroalkylarenes. The C-F bond reduction was realized by lithium iodide and triethylamine, two common feedstock reagents. Mechanistic studies revealed the generation of a α,α-difluoromethyl radical by single-electron reduction and defluorination, followed by the radical addition to alkenes. Lithium salt interacted with the fluorine atom to promote the photoinduced reduction mediated by the EDA complex. Computational studies indicated that the lithium-assisted defluorination and the single-electron reduction occurred concertedly. We call this phenomenon fluoride-coupled electron transfer (FCET). FCET is a novel approach to C-F bond activation for the synthesis of organofluorine compounds.

Abstract:Enzymatic cleavage of C─F bonds in per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is largely unknown but avidly sought to promote systems biology for PFAS bioremediation. Here, we report the reductive defluorination of α, β-unsaturated per- and polyfluorocarboxylic acids by Acetobacterium spp. The microbial defluorination products were structurally confirmed and showed regiospecificity and stereospecificity, consistent with their formation by enzymatic reactions. A comparison of defluorination activities among several Acetobacterium species indicated that a functional fluoride exporter was required for the detoxification of the released fluoride. Results from both in vivo inhibition tests and in silico enzyme modeling suggested the involvement of enzymes of the flavin-based electron-bifurcating caffeate reduction pathway [caffeoyl-CoA reductase (CarABCDE)] in the reductive defluorination. This is a report on specific microorganisms carrying out enzymatic reductive defluorination of PFAS, which could be linked to electron-bifurcating reductases that are environmentally widespread.

Abstract:A variety of metal elements have exhibited strong reductive and dehalogenative capabilities for the removal of persistent organic pollutants, owing to electron transfer or electron-hole activation through various methods. Herein, a bimetallic CNi-Al2O3 structure (AlCNi) was successfully synthesized to simultaneously function as sorbent and catalyst in the reduction of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFOA) polluted wastewater. Using a reaction period of 3 h, 98% of PFOA was removed by AlCNi through a mechanochemical stirring method and 70.43% of fluorine ions was released from PFOA anchored onto the surface of AlCNi. Both thermocatalysis and photocatalysis technologies were incorporated and compared when utilized in tandem with AlCNi to mitigate the PFOA. In addition, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) were also integrated into experiments, separately, as a strong oxidant and reductant to improve the degradation effect of PFOA. However, the degradation efficiency of both were lower than that of AlCNi, even when assisted by elevated temperatures and ultraviolet irradiation. The feasibility of employing AlCNi for PFOA degradation was further investigated at various temperature and pH conditions. The data obtained from HPLC-MS/MS, TOC, and IC with multiple characterizations of AlCNi/PFOA, proposed the predominant degradation pathways comprising adsorption, defluorination-hydroxylation, and decarboxylation. This study provides a valuable remediation method without utilizing chemical agents and special activation for PFOA by AlCNi, which can be suitable for large-scale sewage treatment applications.

Abstract:The discharge of widely used per- and poly-fluorinated compounds (PFCs) leads to their environmental prevalence, bioaccumulation and biotoxicity; and attracts researches focusing on their treatment in wastewater. Electrochemical reductive treatment is a promising alternative due to its milder reaction conditions and easy operation. The feasibility of electrochemical reductive decomposition of PFOA using a Rh/Ni cathode was explored. The Rh/Ni cathode was fabricated by coating Rh3+ on Ni foil through electrodeposition. The Rh coating was primarily elemental and in a Rh(111) crystalline form. PFOA decomposition and defluorination were observed when using the Rh/Ni cathode where DMF was the solvent and the cathode potential was -1.25 V. A hydrodefluorination reaction was considered having occurred. Because possessing d electrons and empty d orbitals, the Rh coating enhanced PFOA adsorption onto the cathode surface and facilitated C-F bond activation through Rh center dot center dot center dot F interactions. Moreover, the Rh(111) crystal helped chemisorb the generated H* and supply it participating in PFOA decomposition. With the continuous interaction of cathode-supplied electrons, C-F bond would ultimately dissociate and transform to C-H bond by H* substitution. Adding FeCp2* as a supporting electrolyte enhanced PFOA decomposition by working as the shuttle facilitating PFOA migration to the cathode surface.

Abstract:Electrosynthesis has received great attention among researchers in both academia and industry as an ideal technique to promote single electron reduction without the use of expensive catalysts. In this work, we report the electrochemical reduction of Katritzky salts to alkyl radicals by sacrificing the easily accessible metal anode. This catalyst and electrolyte free platform has broad applicability to single electron transfer chemistry, including fluoroalkenylation, alkynylation and thiolation. The deaminative functionalization is facilitated by the rapid molecular diffusion across microfluidic channels, demonstrating the practicality that outpaces the conventional electrochemistry setups.

Mechanistic Study of Fe(III) Chelate Reduction in a Neutral Electro-Fenton Process

Abstract:Fe(III) chelate reduction is of great importance in the homogeneous neutral electro-Fenton (EF) process, but its reduction mechanisms with different reductive species remain unclear. In this study, the reduction mechanisms of several typical Fe(III) chelates through electron and atomic H* were investigated using experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results indicated that the electron reduction efficiencies for [Fe(III)-EDTA](-) and [Fe(III)-EDDS](-) chelates were 16.23 and 8.31 times higher compared to [Fe(H2O)(6)](3+), which was featured by low ELUMO-HOMO and concentrated LUMO distribution around Fe atom. In contrast, the atomic H* reduction efficiency for [Fe(III)-HA](3+) chelate was 10 times higher than that of electron, attributed to high chelation ability of HA and negative energy barrier of [Fe(III)-HA](3+) reduction in the atomic H*-dominated system. Additionally, phthalocyanine (Pc) had insignificant effect on pollutant degradation efficiency in the neutral EF systems due to the lower chelate ability of Pc with Fe(III) compared to H2O.
Structural Dependence of Reductive Defluorination of Linear PFAS Compounds in a UV/Electrochemical System

Abstract:Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), legacy chemicals used in firefighting and the manufacturing of many industrial and consumer goods, are widely found in groundwater resources, along with other regulated compounds, such as chlorinated solvents. Due to their strong C–F bonds, these molecules are extremely recalcitrant, requiring advanced treatment methods for effective remediation, with hydrated electrons shown to be able to defluorinated these compounds. A combined photo/electrochemical method has been demonstrated to dramatically increase defluorination rates, where PFAS molecules sorbed onto appropriately functionalized cathodes charged to low cell potentials (−0.58 V vs Ag/AgCl) undergo a transient electron transfer event from the electrode, which "primes" the molecule by reducing the C–F bond strength and enables the bond's dissociation upon the absorption of a hydrated electron. In this work, we explore the impact of headgroup and chain length on the performance of this two-electron process and extend this technique to chlorinated solvents. We use isotopically labeled PFAS molecules to take advantage of the kinetic isotope effect and demonstrate that indeed PFAS defluorination is likely driven by a two-electron process. Abstract:This work reports a mechanochemical (MC) method for complete defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) by using Al and Al2O3 as milling agents. Both the Al/Al2O3 molar ratio (nAl/nAl2O3) and the pre-thermal treatment of Al2O3 strongly influenced the defluorination of PFOA. When commercial γ-Al2O3 was pre-treated at 1200 °C, the use of Al and heat-treated γ-Al2O3 with nAl/nAl2O3 of 1: 1 led to PFOA defluorination of 100% after ball milling for 26 min at 350 rpm, being much higher than those (8.3%–58.1%) for using singlet milling agents or binary milling agents containing γ-Al2O3 pre-heated at temperatures lower than 700 °C. It was clarified that the carboxylate-mediated adsorption of PFOA on Al2O3 was essential for the MC decarboxylation as a degradation initiation step, and the in-situ generated electron on milled Al consequently caused the reductive dissociation of C–F bonds in the decarboxylation intermediate. A larger nAl/nAl2O3 increased the in-situ electron generation rate (re), and a higher heat-treatment temperature decreased OH−/H2O adsorbed on Al2O3 to low the PFOA decarboxylation rate (rdec). The re/rdec ratio determined defluorination pathways, and the percentage of the defluorination of PFOA in its total degradation including the generation of any degradation intermediates increased linearly with increasing re/rdec.
