Abstract:The copolymerization of N-phenylmaleimide (NPMI) with styrene (St) was studied with a rare earth coordination catalyst Nd(naph)3–AlEt3 in toluene at 50 °C. The compositions of the two monomers in copolymers were close to 1:1 even at a high monomer conversion of about 60%, and did not change as the NPMI feed mole fraction varied from 10% to 90%. The copolymer was characterized by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, showing that the copolymer possessed a nearly alternating structure. The thermal properties of the copolymers were also investigated. It was presumed that a charge transfer complex of NPMI and St participated in the polymerization process.

Abstract:The bulk polymerization of styrene catalyzed by Nd(P204)3/MgBu2/HMPA (hexamethyl phospho-ramide) was carried out in capped glass tubes. The effects of reaction conditions on polymerization conversion and molecular weight in the range of high conversion were investigated. The molecular weight of the resultant polymers is dramatically high and its distribution is relatively narrow. The polymerization process demonstrates the feature of living polymerization and auto-acceleration phenomenon. The auto-acceleration phenomenon is attributed to the non-instantaneous formation of the active species. The experimental data suggest that chain transfer to MgBu2 is one of the factors governing the molecular weight development. A mechanism of polymerization is presented with the chain transfer process incorporated.

Abstract:Terpolymerization of maleic anhydride,styrene and N -phenylmaleimide was studied using rare earth coordination catalysts in toluene at 50℃.The dependence of terpolymerization on molar ration of catalyst components,different rare earth element,catalyst concentration,polymerization time and molar ratio of monomers was investigated in detail.Results showed that rare earth coordination catalysts were favorable catalysts for the terpolymerization of maleic anhydride,styrene and N -phenylmaleimide.A suitable condition for terpolymerization was as followed: Ln(naph) 3=5.0×10 -3 mol/L,[NPMI]=[MAn]=2.25×10 -1 mol/L,[St]=4.5×10 -1 mol/L,Al/Nd=6,50℃; 2 h.The terpolymer was primarily characterized by FT-IR,NMR and thermal analysis.The terpolymer was shown to have high thermal stability.

Abstract:A series of ((PNP)-N-Lambda-P-Lambda) cobalt (II) complexes were prepared by the reaction of N-containing diphosphine ligands and anhydrous cobalt dichloride and their catalytic performance in the polymerization of styrene were also investigated. Upon activation with ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC), all these cobalt complexes showed high catalytic activities up to 5.44 x 10(5) g (PS).mol(-1) (Co).h(-1) for the solution polymerization of styrene in toluene. The reaction parameters, such as styrene concentration (2 similar to 4 mL), Al/Go molar ratio (20 similar to 160), reaction temperature (0 similar to 70 degrees C) and ligand structure of cobalt complexes were employed in order to study their influences on the polymerization of styrene and the properties of the resulting polymers. The molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and microstructure of the resulting polymers were characterized by GPC and C-13-NMR spectra. The GPC results indicated that all the polystyrenes obtained had low molecular weight (M-n = 2000 similar to 5900) and narrow molecular weight distribution (1.75 similar to 2.05). The C-13-NMR spectra demonstrated that the microstructure of polystyrenes obtained was atactic.

Abstract:The ternary catalyst system neodymium phosphate/di-n-butyl magnesium triethyl aluminum complex/hexamethyl phosphoramide (Nd(P204)3/MgBu2·AlEt3/HMPA) for the polymerization of styrene was examined. The effects of the addition order of each component, the aging time and temperature and the presence of a small amount of styrene during the preparation of the catalyst system on the activity of the catalyst system and the molecular weight of the resultant polymers were investigated. A stable and homogeneous catalyst system which produces polystyrene with narrow molecular weight distributions can be prepared by an alkylation reaction of Nd(P204)3 with MgBu2·AlEt3 at ambient temperature followed by the addition of HMPA. An introduction of a small amount of styrene during the preparation of the catalysts can further improve their stability.

Abstract:A series of cobalt complexes bearing N-containing diphosphine PNP ligands has been synthesized and characterized. The nature of the ligand structure affects the binding of the ligand to the cobalt center and determines the coordination geometry of the cobalt complexes. All the complexes have been employed to catalyze the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, in combination with methylaluminoxane (MAO) or ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) as the cocatalyst. Both the nature of the ligand and the type of cocatalyst had a remarkable influence on the polymerization activity, microstructure and molecular weight of the resulting polymers. The [Co]/MAO catalytic systems resulted in relatively lower conversions of butadiene and cis-1,4 contents in the polymers than the corresponding [Co]/EASC catalytic systems. Upon activation with EASC, the polymerization behaviors of the catalytic systems were also affected by the reaction parameters.

Abstract:Polymerization of styrene has been investigated using homogeneous rare earth coordination catalysts based on a neodymium compound, triisobutylaluminium and/or a third component. Satisfactory results have been obtained by aging catalyst components for 1 h at 60°C, and polymerizing styrene in hexane at 60°C. The addition of CCl4 as a third component to Nd(naph)3-Al(iso-Bu)3 system greatly increases catalytic activity. The order of catalytic activity of Nd compounds with different ligands for styrene polymerization is as follows: Nd(P507)3∼Nd(P204)3>Nd(naph)3>Nd(acac)3·3H2O. Both Nd(P507)3−Al(iso-Bu)3 and Nd(P204)3−Al(iso-Bu)3 systems prepared in the presence of monomer show high catalytic activity. A syndiotactic-rich polystyrene was obtained with Nd (naph)3−Al (iso-Bu)3- and/or a third component systems in hexane at 60°C.

Abstract:Styrene/Acrylonitrile/N-Phenlymaleimide emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecyl sulfate as emulsifier and potas- sium persulphate as initiator.The effects of monomers ratio,emulsifier and initiator concentration on the polyresction and the product were investigat ed.It showed that the PMI content in the copolymer is important to the character of the copolymer,and for the copolymerization,the suitable reaction condition were:the emulsifier 13-15 mmol/L and the initiator 1.8～2.4 mmol/L.

Abstract:A highly active rare earth coordination catalyst composed of neodymium acetylacetonate, dibutylmagnesium, and hexamethylphosphoramide (mole ratio 1:7:14) for the polymerization of N-phenylmaleimide (N-PMI) was developed. The resulting poly(N-PMI) has high molecular weight (<(M)over bar (n)> = 9.0 x 10(4)) and shows excellent thermal stability.

Abstract:The polymerization of N-phenylmaleimide was carried out with the binary rare-earth coordination catalyst lanthanum phosphonate [La(P-507)]-trisobutyl aluminum [AI(i-BU)(3)] in toluene at 60 degrees C. The dependence of the polymerization on the polymerization time, the molar ratio of AI(i-BU)(3) to La(P-507), and the concentration of the catalyst were studied. The structures of the resultant polymer were characterized with H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry, and the thermal properties of the polymer were measured with thermogravimetric analysis. Abstract:Copolymerization of butadiene (Bd) and styrene (St) was carried out in toluene at 50 °C by a conventional rare earth catalytic system, Nd(naph)3–Al(i-Bu)3–Al(i-Bu)2Cl. It exhibited a high catalytic activity and high stereospecificity in the copolymerization. The influences of the conditions in polymerization on the yield, composition, microstructure and molecular weight of copolymer were thoroughly studied. According to the 13C-NMR spectrum, the resultant copolymer containing 18% St units, and the diad fraction of St–trans Bd or St–vinyl Bd can hardly be found in its 13C-NMR. The cis-1,4 content of Bd unit of the copolymer decreased little with the increase of St content. The GPC curves indicate the presence of two kinds of active sites in the polymerization.

Abstract:Alternating copolymerization of isoprene with maleic anhydride was carried out by rare earth coordination catalyst [Nd (naph)(3)-AlEt3] for the first time. The better copolymerization conditions are: [M](total) = 2.6 mol/L, n(Al)/n(Nd) = 10, [Nd] = 5 X 10(-3) mol/L, V(toluene)/V(dioxane) = 2/5 as solvent, 5 degreesC, 2 h. Copolymer yield was 70%. The copolymer was characterized by elemental analysis, IR and C-13 NMR.

Abstract:The catalytic activities of nine neutral nickel and palladium a-acetylide complexes [M=(C=CR)2(PR’3)2)M=Ni,Pd; R=Ph,CH2OH,CH2OOCH3,CH2OOCPh,CH2OOCPhOH-o; R’=Ph,Bu] are compared.Among them,Ni(Cs=CPh)2-(PBuj)2 shows the highest catalytic activity and gives the polystyrene with high molecular weight(Mw=188800)and a syndio-rich microstructure.The catalytic behavior of transition metal acetylides is related to metal,phosphine,and alkynyl ligands bonded to the metal atoms.

Abstract:A new highly active rare earth coordination catalyst composed of rare earth phosphonate, di-n-butylmagnesium (MgBu), and hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA) for the polymerization of styrene has been developed for the first time. High molecular weight polystyrene (Mν = 50–70 × 104) in 100% conversion could be prepared at following conditions: [Nd] = 6–8 × 10−4 mol/L, [St] = 3.0 mol/L, Mg/Nd = 11, and HMPA/Mg = 1–1.5 (molar ratio). The catalytic activity of this new catalyst is 3530 g PSt/g Nd. Kinetics study shows that the polymerization rate is of first order with respect to both monomer concentration and catalyst concentration, and activation energy of the polymerization is 40.1 kJ/mol. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The copolymerization behavior of styrene and isoprene was studied in the presence of binary rare earth catalyst system consisting of rare earth chloride complex with diisooctyl phosphate as a ligand(NdCl3·2 DOP,simplified as Nd) and triisobutyl aluminium(simplified as Al).The effects of c(Al)/c(Nd),polymerization temperature,monomer feed ratio on copolymerization characteristics and composition and microstructure of the copolymer were investigated.The results showed that the catalyst could initiate isoprene homopolymerization,but could not catalyze styrene homopolymerization,and the activity of styrene and isoprene copolymerization,which was dependent on feed ratio,was lower than that of isoprene homopolymerization.Isoprene chain in copolymer was rich in cis-1,4-unit(95%-96%),poor in 3,4-unit,and almost free of trans-1,4-unit.Styrene content in the copolymer increased with increasing styrene feed ratio,c(Al)/c(Nd) and polymerization temperature,while the styrene incorporated into the isoprene chain in isolated units,demonstrating the obtained copolymer was quasi-random in chain structure.The weight-average molecular weight of the copolymer could reach up to 19.3×105,and the molecular weight distribution broadened with the increase of bound styrene in copolymer,even the bimodal distribution appeared.

Abstract:The study on homogeneous rare earth coordination catalysts, LnL3-Al(i-Bu)3-CCl4, for the copolymerization of styrene with acrylonitrile has been successfully carried out for the first time. Some features and kinetic behavior of copolymerization of styrene with acrylonitrile by Nd(P204)3-Al(i-Bu)3-CCl4 system are described. The catalyst sites appear to possess both coordinate anionic and free radical characteristics. The catalytic activity of various rare earth elements in Ln(P204)3 and ligands in NdL3 for the copolymerization have the following order, respectively: Yb > Er > Tb ∼ Tm > Ho > Ce > Lu ∼ Sm ∼ La > Pr > Nd, and Nd(naph)3 > Nd(P204)3 ∼ Nd(P507)3 > Nd(acac)3·3H2O. An alternating-rich copolymer of styrene-acrylonitrile with a high softening point (195–230°C) was obtained by the LnL3-Al(i-Bu)3-CCl4 systems in toluene at 80°C.
New Coordination Catalysts Based on Rare Earth Compounds for Polymerization of 1‐Octene

Abstract:The study of rare earth coordination catalysts for polymerization of 1-octene has been successfully carried out for the first time. Some features and kinetic behavior of polymerization of 1-octene by Nd(naph)3-AlEt3 catalyst system in tetrachloro-methane are described. The overall polymerization activation energy E(a) measured was 74.5 kJ/mol and the rate equation could be expressed as R(p) = k(p) [Nd] [M] (k(p) = 3.21 X 10(-3) L/mol s, at 50-degrees-C). The catalytic activity of various rare earth elements in Ln (naph)3 and ligands in NdL3 for the polymerization was compared. A 1-octene oligomer with double bonds was obtained. It is either a white or pale yellow waxy semi-solid. Its number-average molecular weight is about 10(3) and the molecular weight distribution is less than 2.

Abstract:The neodymium complex supported on styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA·Nd) has been prepared for the first time and found to be a highly effective catalyst for the polymerization of styrene. The SMA·Nd polymeric complex is characterized by IR and its catalytic activity, and the polymerization features have been investigated in comparison with that of the conventional Ziegler-Natta catalysts. When [Nd]=1×10~(-3) mol/L, [M]=5mol/L, Al/Nd=170(mol ratio) and CCl_4/Nd=50(mol ratio), the polymerization conversion of styrene gets to 51.6% in six hours, and the catalytic activity reaches 1852 gPS/gNd, which is much higher than that of conventional rare earth catalysts. The polymerization reaction has an induction period and shows some characteristics of chain polymerization. The polymerization rate is the first order with respect to the concentration of styrene monomer. Addition of FeCl_3 does not suppress the polymerization.

Abstract:Polymerization of N-Octadecylmaleimide was studied using rare earth coordination catalysts in toluene. The dependence of polymerization on molar ratio of catalyst components, different rare earth elements, catalyst concentration, monomer concentration, polymerization time and polymerization temperature was investigated in detail. The results showed that the rare earth catalysts were favorable catalysts for the polymerization of N-Octadecylmaleimide. A suitable condition for the polymerization was [La(P-507)(3)] = 1 X 10(-2) mol (.) L-1; [Al(i-Bu)(3)] = 8.0 x 10(-2) mol (.) L-1; [NODMI] = 5.0 x 10(-1) mol (.) L-1; 60 degrees C ; 6 h. Characterization of the polymer obtained showed that polymerization of N-Octadecylmaleimide proceeded via opening the double bond in the monomer molecules. The heat-resistant property of the polymer was investigated primarily. The polymer showed excellent thermal stability. The thermal decomposition of the polymer proceeded via a one-step reaction and no substantial weight loss was observed below 350 degrees C. The initial decomposition temperature (T-ini) was 360 degrees C, the maximum decomposition temperature (T-max) was 441 degrees C, and the residual weight at 500 degrees C was about 3.4 wt %.
