Abstract:Two azo-perylene derivatives (PBI-AZO-1 and PBI-AZO-2) with two alkyl chains and six alkoxy chains were designed and synthesized in yield of 63% and 49%, respectively. PBI-AZO-1 showed no mesophase but PBI-AZO-2 exhibited ordered hexagonal columnar mesophase based on the favorable effects of multiple alkyl chains. PBI-AZO-1 and PBI-AZO-2 exhibited the cis and trans azo-isomerization under radiation of UV light and the fluorescence quantum yields enhanced remarkably from 0.61 and 0.64 to 0.78 and 0.88, respectively. The ordered hexagonal columnar mesophase of PBI-AZO-2 was destroyed by isomerization due to the influence of asymmetrical mixture of cis and trans isomers. The transformation of liquid crystal/non-liquid crystal of PBI-AZO-2 before and after cis/trans isomerization displayed good reversibility by storing the sample for 15 days at room temperature. Fast Visualized Conformational Transition of Polyphenylacetylenes with Stepwise Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Two novel poly(3,5-diamide substituted phenylacetylene)s bearing L- or D-alanine residues with a long alkyl chain were synthesized. In low polar or apolar solvents, the polymers adopted contracted cis-cisoid helix showing strong yellow fluorescence, which was transferred to stretched cis-transoid helix by adding polar solvents or decreasing temperature, accompanied with the disappearance of fluorescence. The critical conformational transition temperature could be readily tuned in a wide range by altering the content of polar solvent, and the conformational variation at molecular level could be directly read out via the change in fluorescent property. The synergistical participation of amide and ester groups in the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds accelerated the conformational transition rate, resulting in remarkable reduction of hysteresis. Moreover, the polymers displayed switchable CPL performance and the luminescent dissymmetry factor could be stepwise amplified by forming chiral aggregates or liquid crystalline structure. This study may open a new avenue for the development of controllable helical structure-based smart CPL materials.
Synthesis of liquid crystalline poly(1-pentyne)s and fabrication of polyacetylene–perovskite hybrids

Abstract:Poly(l-pentyne)s containing biphenyl and phthalimido pendant groups with different spacer lengths {P1(m); -[HC=C(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(m)N(CO)(2)C6H4](n)-, Biph=4,4'-biphenylyl; m = 7, 10} are synthesized in satisfactory yields by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst in toluene at elevated temperatures. The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. Both of the polymers are thermally stable (T-d greater than or less than 300 degrees C) and exhibit nematicity at high temperatures. Their phthalimido groups are converted into amino groups by hydrolysis, which can, after acidification, complex with lead(II) bromide to furnish polyacetylene-perovskite hybrids in high yields. The organic components contribute good solubility to the hybrids, while the perovskite framework induces the polyacetylene chains to align within the inorganic sheets. The hybrids emit a strong UV light of 374 nm upon photoexcitation, whose quantum yield increases with an increase in the spacer length. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Brightening Up Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Monosubstituted Polyacetylene by Conformation Control: Mechanism, Switching, and Sensing

Abstract:The first example of luminescent monosubstituted polyacetylenes (mono-PAs) is presented, based on a contracted cis-cisoid polyene backbone. It has an excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performance with a high dissymmetric factor (up to the order of 10(-1)). The luminescence stems from the helical cis-cisoid PA backbone, which is tightly fixed by the strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds, thereby reversing the energy order of excited states and enabling an emissive energy dissipation. CPL switches are facilely achieved by the solvent and temperature through reversible conformational transition. By taking advantages of fast response and high sensitivity, the thin film of mono-PAs could be used as a CPL-based probe for quantitative detection of trifluoroacetic acid with a wider linear dynamic range than those of photoluminescence and circular dichroism. This work opens a new avenue to develop novel smart CPL materials through modulating conformational transition.
Tunable Cis-cisoid Helical Conformation of Poly(3,5-disubstibuted Phenylacetylene)s Stabilized by N→π~* Interaction

Abstract:A series of novel cis poly(phenylacetylene)s(PPAs) substituted at meta-position(s) by two alkoxycarbonyl pendants, i.e., sP-Me-C8/rPMe-C8, P-Me-C12, sP-Et-C4, sP-2C4 and sP-Oct-C4, were synthesized under the catalysis of [Rh(nbd)Cl]2(nbd = norbornadiene). The dependence of elongation, screw sense, and stimuli response of helical polyene backbone on the structure of pendant, solvent, and temperature was systematically investigated in both solution and solid states. Because of n→π~* interaction between vicinal carbonyl groups, sP-Me-C8/rPMe-C8 could adopt contracted cis-cisoid helix in THF, toluene, CH 2 Cl 2 , and CHCl 3 . Such an intramolecular interaction was sensitive to the hydrogen bond donating ability of solvent and temperature, but insensitive to the dielectric constant and polarity of solvent. In poly(3-methoxycarbonyl-5-alkoxycarbonylphenylacetylene), the longer the chiral alkyl chain was, the easier the stable cis-cisoid helix could be achieved.However, when the methoxycarbonyl was changed to ethoxycarbonyl, sec-butyloxycarbonyl, and octyloxycarbonyl pendant groups, only cistransoid helix was obtained at room temperature due to the increased steric hindrance. Moreover, lowering temperature was found to facilitate the stabilization of n→π~* interactions, and reversible temperature-dependent stereomutations were achieved in sP-Me-C8 and sP-Et-C4 depending on the solvent where they were dissolved. These results suggested that the long alkyl chain, small pendant size, and lower temperature favored the stabilization of intramolecular n→π~* interactions and the formation of contracted, cis-cisoid helices for poly(3,5-diester substituted phenylacetylene)s.

Abstract:A novel alternating conjugated polymer (C12-PPE-BT) containing phenylene-ethynylene and benzothiadiazole (BT) units (unless otherwise specified, C12-PPE-BT is represented that the BT ratio is 50% (mol%)) was synthesized by cross-coupling polycondensation with bis(triphenylphosphine)-dichloropalladium (Pd(PPh3)2Cl2) and phase transfer catalyst(PTC). C12-PPE-BT was characterized by 1H NMR, IR, TGA, DSC and elemental analysis. Its electrochemistry, photophysics and electroluminescence properties were discussed. The copolymer obtained possesses high thermal stability, high oxidation and reduction potentials, and high photoluminescence quantum yield. Devices based on C12-PPE-BT copolymer emit red light with λmax = 620nm. The emission of phenylene-ethynylene segments almost completely disappeared manifested that the intrachain and/or interchain energy transfer from phenylene-ethynylene segments to BT units occurred.
Cis-Cisoid Helical Structures of Poly(3,5-disubstituted Phenylacetylene)s Stabilized by Intramolecular N → Π* Interactions

Abstract:A pair of enantiomeric cis-poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) substituted at the meta-positions of pendant phenyl rings by an achiral methoxycarbonyl group and a chiral 1-methylpropyloxycarbonyl group (i.e., sP-Me-C4/rP-Me-C4) as well as two cis-PPAs bearing either just a methoxycarbonyl (i.e., m-aP-Me) or a 1-methylpropyloxycarbonyl (i.e., m-sP-C4) meta substituent were synthesized under the catalysis of [Rh(nbd)Cl](2) (nbd = norbornadiene). Various techniques including H-1 NMR, FTIR, Raman, UV-vis, CD, DSC, STM, DLS/SLS, and computer calculation were applied to characterize the helical structures of these polymers in both solution and solid states. sP-Me-C4/rP-Me-C4 adopted contracted cis-cisoid helical conformations in THF, toluene, CH2Cl2, and ClCH2CH2Cl but cis-transoid ones in CHCl3 and Cl2CHCHCl2. The cis-cisoid helices were considered to be stabilized by the existence of six n -> pi* interaction bands along the polyene backbones between vicinal carbonyl groups. Such interactions were insensitive to the dielectric constant and polarity of solvent but sensitive to the hydrogen bond donating ability of solvent and temperature. In hydrogen bond accepting solvent, the cis-cisoid helical structures were thermal stable, whereas the cis-cisoid to cis-transoid helix transition could be triggered by raising temperature in the hydrogen bond donating solvent. The stronger the hydrogen bondings between solvent molecules and carbonyl groups, the lower the temperature required to maintain cis-cisoid helix. Moreover, the cis-cisoid helices stabilized by intramolecular n -> pi* interactions had better tolerance to the polarity of solvent and faster recovery than those stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. No matter whether methoxycarbonyl or 1-methylpropyloxycarbonyl group was removed, only a cis-transoid helix was observed, implying the weak nature of n -> pi* interaction and the need for a delicate macromolecular design. This work provided an unusual strategy to build cis-cisoid PPAs.
Optically Active Helical Poly(3,5-disubstituted phenylacetylene): Conformation Regulation, Chirality Transfer, and Self-assembly

Abstract:Poly(phenylacetylene) (PPA) derivatives are important dynamic helical polymers with rich and adjustable helical conformations, which have received ever-increasing attention due to their potential applications in the fields of chiral recognition, enantiomeric resolution, asymmetric catalysis, multi-channel sensor, circularly polarized luminescence, etc. This feature article summarizes the recent research progress of our group on poly(3,5-disubstituted phenylacetylene), including the influencing factors and regulation rules of cis-cisoid helical conformation, a novel doublet chirality transfer (DCT) mode, the adjustable chiral amplification, as well as its interesting self-assembly behavior. By introducing intramolecular hydrogen bonding or n ->pi* interactions, cis-cisoid helix can be obtained and stabilized in solution, the formation of which can be tuned by changing the size of pendant groups, solvents, additives, and temperature, etc. Based on this disubstitution structure, a new model of doublet chirality transfer is put forward, which can be used to design various PPA functional materials and attenuate the possible antagonism. To achieve a good DCT, high cis structure of main chain, and strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds are indispensible. Different chiral amplifications in a single copolymer system, normal and abnormal "sergeants-and-soldiers" effects, can be achieved by tuning the conformational transition between cis-cisoid and cis-transoid helices, which can be well-explained by using the modified Ising model. Moreover, interesting self-assembly behavior including the self-assembly of amphiphilic rod-rod block copolymers and the conformational transition-induced self-assembly are observed in poly(3,5-disubstituted phenylacetylene). For the former, by modulating the composition of block copolymers, water contents, and initial copolymer concentration, the aggregates can transform from the spherical micelles to the worm-like micelles, multi-arm worm-like micelles, and vesicles. For the latter, hydrogen bonds driven conformation autoregulation and sol-gel transition are achieved for PPA homopolymer. The self-assembly structures can sequentially evolve from vesicles to nanobelts to helical strands during the process of conformational transition for PPA block copolymers. Finally, the future research directions of poly(3,5-disubstituted phenylacetylene) as chiral functional materials are prospected.
Electrochromic Properties of Polymers/Copolymers Via Electrochemical Polymerization Based on Star-Shaped Thiophene Derivatives with Different Central Cores

Abstract:Three star-shaped thiophene derivatives, namely TPAT, PHT and TPTT with different central cores of triphenylamine, phenyl and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine respectively, were synthesized and characterized. They were further successfully prepared into the corresponding cross-linked polymers pTPAT, pPHT and pTPTT via electrochemical polymerization. The cyclic voltammetry curves showed that pPHT and pTPTT displayed the relatively higher onset oxidative potentials than pTPAT. After being applied with the positive voltages in an electrochemical cell, pTPAT exhibited the obvious electrochromic behaviors, while such phenomenons were not observed in the case of pPHT and pTPTT. The theory calculation results together with the electrochemistry properties revealed that the electrochromism of pTPAT may mainly depend on its relatively lower oxidative potential because of the introduction of triphenylamine with low ionization energy. Through the copolymerization with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) which is also of relatively low ionization energy, pPHT-EDOT and pTPTT-EDOT both exhibited excellent electrochromic properties. Abstract:Biphenyl, as the elementary unit of organic functional materials, has been widely used in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, over decades little has been fundamentally understood regarding how the intramolecular conformation of biphenyl dynamically affects its transport properties at the single-molecule level. Here, we establish the stereoelectronic effect of biphenyl on its electrical conductance based on the platform of graphene-molecule single-molecule junctions, where a specifically designed hexaphenyl aromatic chain molecule is covalently sandwiched between nanogapped graphene point contacts to create stable single-molecule junctions. Both theoretical and temperature-dependent experimental results consistently demonstrate that phenyl twisting in the aromatic chain molecule produces different microstates with different degrees of conjugation, thus leading to stochastic switching between high- and low-conductance states. These investigations offer new molecular design insights into building functional single-molecule electrical devices.
Visualized Thermoresponsive Helix-Helix Switch of Polyphenylacetylene with a Wide-Range Tunable Transition Temperature

Abstract:Polymers with tunable helicity and naked-eye structural change under external stimuli are valuable for fabricating smart materials. Herein, we report a novel thermoresponsive color and fluorescent polyphenylacetylene switch with a tunable critical temperature. It relies on the temperature and solvent sensitivity of intramolecular n→π* interactions between the vicinal carbonyl groups of ester substituents located at 3,5-positions, which are indispensable for forming the cis-cisoid helical conformation of polyene backbones. In a properly chosen solvent, a compressed cis-cisoid helix is stabilized by n→π* interactions at low temperatures and yields a colorless solution. Increasing temperature causes the conformational transition toward an extended cis-transoid helix due to the disruption of n→π* interactions and produces a yellow solution. Reducing the hydrogen bond donating ability or polarity of solvents increases the switching temperature. By introducing a fluorogenic pendant, this conformational transition can also be read out by fluorescence quenching. This work may open a new window for developing intelligent materials through precisely tuning conformational transitions.
Reversible Cis-Cisoid to Cis-Transoid Helical Structure Transition in Poly(3,5-Disubstituted Phenylacetylene)S

Abstract:A series of novel 3,5-disubstituted phenylacetylenes, rM-1, sM-1 to sM-5, bearing an achiral methoxycarbonyl pendant group and various chiral N-alkylamide pendant groups, were synthesized. They were converted to the corresponding polymers, rP-1, sP-1 to sP-5, with high cis-structure contents under the catalysis of [Rh(nbd)Cl](2), aiming to understand how the environmental variation and the structure of pendant group influence the chiroptical properties of polymers. sP-1/rP-1 were soluble in CHCl3 and THF at the molecular level and exhibited much larger optical rotations with opposite signs to those of sM-1/rM-1 and displayed the intense Cotton effects centered at 360 rim in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra, ascribed to the one-handed, contracted cis-cisoid helical polyene backbone. The reversible conformation transition between the contracted cis-cisoid helix and the frustrated, extended cis-transoid helix was achieved by alternately adding trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and triethylamine into the hydrogen bond donating solvent (i.e., CHCl3), as evidenced by UV-vis absorption and CD spectroscopy, dynamic and static laser light scattering, DSC, and WAXD results. However, the addition of TFA into the sP-1 solution in the hydrogen bond accepting solvent (i.e., THF) caused no discernible halochromism. The competing interaction of THF with TFA was considered to account for the observed difference in acid induced chromism. The small modification in the chiral alkylamide pendant group was found to remarkably affect the solubility and helical conformation of the polymer. sP-2 was insoluble in all the solvents tested, sP-3 and sP-4 dissolved in polar DMF, while sP-5 dissolved in both polar and apolar solvents. Depending on the nature of solvents and additives, sP-3 and sP-4 took either contracted or frustrated helical conformation, whereas sP-5 took only a stretched helical conformation due to the highly branched alkyl group.
Thermoswitching of Helical Inversion of Dynamic Polyphenylacetylenes through <i>cis-trans</i> Isomerization of Amide Pendants

Abstract:The cis-trans isomerization of amides plays a vital role in all kinds of structural changes and biological activities, involving protein folding, protein misfolding, and even protein molecular recognition. However, the helical inversion of synthetic macromolecules arising from the cis-trans isomerization of tertiary amides, as a good mimic of natural protein, has been rarely researched. Herein, we synthesized meta-disubstituted polyphenylacetylenes (PPAs) with different N-substituted tertiary amides as one of the pendants, poly{(-)-3-methoxycarbonyl-5-[N-methyl-N-(S)-(1-phenylethyl)carbamoyl]phenylacetylene}(sP-NMe) and poly{(-)-3-methoxycarbonyl-5-[N-propyl-N-(S)-(1-phenylethyl)carbamoyl]phenylacetylene} (sP-NPr). The cis-trans isomerization of amides was investigated by a combinational analysis of H-1/C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (HMQC), variable-temperature NMR, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, electronic circular dichroism (ECD), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), and computer calculations. The substituted amide of sP-NMe favors the trans isomer at low temperatures, and the polyene main chain takes the right-handed helical conformation. When increasing the temperature, the ratio of the cis isomer in sP-NMe increases, which causes helical inversion. The screw sense of the polymer backbone of sP-NMe can be thermoreversibly switched upon tuning the cis-trans isomerization equilibrium of the tertiary amide pendant. In comparison, sP-NPr has the left-handed conformation with the majority of the cis isomer owing to the bulky propyl group, and cis-trans isomerization cannot induce helical inversion upon thermal treatment. The results reveal that helical inversion caused by the cis-trans isomerization of amide groups is highly dependent on the size of N-alkyl substituents.
Photoluminescence of Cis-Polyacetylene Semiconductor Material

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) is one of the key experimental characterizations of optoelectronic materials, including conjugated polymers (CPs). In this study, a simplified model of an undoped cis-polyacetylene (cis-PA) oligomer was selected and used to explain the mechanism of photoluminescence (PL) of the CPs. Using a combination of the ab initio electronic structure and a time-dependent density matrix methodology, the photo-induced time-dependent excited state dynamics were computed. We explored the phonon-induced relaxation of the photoexcited state for a single oligomer of cis-PA. Here, the dissipative Redfield equation of the motion was used to compute the dissipative excited state dynamics of electronic degrees of freedom. This equation used the nonadiabatic couplings as parameters. The computed excited state dynamics showed that the relaxation rate of the electron is faster than the relaxation rate of the hole. The dissipative excited-state dynamics were combined with radiative recombination channels to predict the PL spectrum. The simulated results showed that the absorption and emission spectra both have a similar transition. The main result is that the computed PL spectrum demonstrates two mechanisms of light emission originating from (i) the inter-band transitions, corresponding to the same range of transition energies as the absorption spectrum and (ii) intra-band transitions not available in the absorption spectra. However, the dissipative Redfield equation of the motion was used to compute the electronic degrees of freedom of the nonadiabatic couplings, which helped to process the time propagation of the excited dynamic state. This excited dynamic state shows that the relaxation rate of the electron is faster than the relaxation rate of the hole, which can be used for improving organic semiconductor materials for photovoltaic and LED applications.

Abstract:This paper reports that 60Co γ-ray irradiation can convert cis-polyphenylacetylene (cis-PPA) films prepared with rare-earth coordination catalysts to highly photosensitive materials. The dependence of the photosensitivity on irradiation dose, preparation methods, and microstructure of the PPA films has been investigated by means of a potential discharge technique. The photosensitivity was enhanced with increasing irradiation dose. The critical dose to produce a light response was 5 × 103 Gy. The maximum surface potential discharge rate was 618 V/s, and the dark decay was approximately 2 V/s for cis-PPA films irradiated with 60Co γ-ray (dose: 2 × 105 Gy). The cis-transoidal-PPA and an electrophotographic photoreceptor device incorporating cis-PPA showed a higher irradiation effect. The structure and properties of 60Co γ-ray irradiated rare-earth PPA films are similar to the unirradiated films.
Influence of Electric Field on the Photoluminescence of a Liquid Crystalline Monosubstituted Polyacetylene

Abstract:It has been shown recently that strong photoluminescence (PL) can occur in monosubstituted polyacetylenes (PAs). In this letter, we investigate the PL of tetrahydrofuran solutions of a highly luminescent liquid crystalline PA, poly(11-{[4′-heptoxy-4-biphenylyl)carbonyl]oxy}-1-undecyne) (PBU), under the influence of direct current electric fields. The applied electric fields can dramatically tune the PL structures of a moderately concentrated PBU solution (∼11.3 mM) at and above an electric field threshold of about 3×105 V/m. Combined with the director simulations, our results indicate that the electrically induced molecular reorientation and intermolecular interaction are responsible for the observed spectral changes.

Abstract:Ferroelectric relaxor P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) terpolymer can generate a hysteresis-free polarization of 47 mC/m(2) at an electric field of 100 MV/m and is attractive for many potential actuating and sensing applications. Fourier transform infrared spectra under electric field reveal that this large polarization originates from the field-induced crystalline phase transformation. The nonpolar TGTG(') chain conformation in P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) can be converted into polar trans (T-m>4 and T(3)G) conformation under high electric field and the latter can be effectively aligned to the applied field direction. Furthermore, this conformation transformation is completely reversible and no hysteresis can be observed during the switching of applied electric field. In contrast, normal ferroelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE) exhibits square polarization loop with very small reversible polarization. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
Photosensitivity in Doped and Sensitized Cis‐polyphenylacetylene

Abstract:The photosensitivity in cis-polyphenylacetylene (cis-PPA, polymerized with rare-earth catalysts) can be significantly enhanced by doping the PPA with I2 or FeCl3 and sensitizing with 4-isothiocyanatofluorescein (F-II) or 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF), which are powerful sensitizers. The electrophotographic photoreceptor (P/R) device with cis-PPA + F-II (on Al substrate) appeared preferable in photosensitivity enhancement and showed good photosensitivity: dark decay 1,8 V/s; maximum rate of discharge 321 V/s; residual surface potential 22 V; discharge 89,1%; photosensitivity 2,96 s-1. This is a new ''family'' of photosensitive materials which can be used in a duplicator.
