For the objective to minimize makespan, and both the largest processing time of all jobs and the total processing time of all jobs are known in advance, we present an optimal algorithm with competitive ratio 4/3 on three machines. Abstract:This paper investigates semi-online scheduling problem with known total size on two uniform machines for maximizing the minimum machine completion time. Lower bounds and optimal algorithms for every s ≥1 are given, where s is the speed ratio of two machines. Both the overall competitive ratio and the competitive ratio for are strictly smaller than those of the optimal algorithms of the corresponding semi-online scheduling problem with known optimal value. It indicates that two related semi-online problems are different.

Abstract:This paper considers the semi-resumable model of single machine scheduling with a non-availability period. The machine is not available for processing during a given time interval. A job cannot be completed before the non-availability period will have to partially restart after the machine has become available again. For the problem with objective of minimizing makespan, the tight worst-case ratio of algorithm LPT is given, and an FPTAS is also proposed. For the problem with objective of minimizing total weighted completion time, an approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than 2 is presented. Two special cases of the latter problem are also considered, and improved algorithms are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the maximum total completion time per machine on m parallel and identical machines. We prove that the problem is strongly NP-hard if m is a part of the input. When m is a given number, a pseudo-polynomial time dynamic programming is proposed. We also show that the worst-case ratio of SPT is at most 2.608 and at least 2.5366 when m is sufficiently large. We further present another algorithm which has a worst-case ratio of 2. Abstract:The machine covering problem deals with partitioning a sequence of jobs among a set of machines, so as to maximize the completion time of the least loaded machine. We study a semi-online variant, where jobs arrive one by one, sorted by non-increasing size. The jobs are to be processed by two uniformly related machines, with a speed ratio of q≥1. Each job has to be processed continuously, in a time slot assigned to it on one of the machines. This assignment needs to be performed upon the arrival of the job. The length of the time slot, which is required for a specific job to run on a given machine, is equal to the size of the job divided by the speed of the machine. We give a complete competitive analysis of this problem by providing an algorithm of the best possible competitive ratio for every q≥1. We first give a tight analysis of the performance of a natural greedy algorithm LPT for the problem. To achieve the best possible performance for the semi-online problem, we use a combination of LPT, together with two alternative algorithms which we design. The new algorithms attain the best possible competitive ratios in the two intervals q∈(1,1.5) and q∈(2.4856,1+3), respectively, whereas the greedy algorithm has the best possible competitive ratio for any other q≥1.

Abstract:We consider a semi-online version of the problem of scheduling a sequence of jobs of different lengths on two uniform machines with given speeds 1 and s. Jobs are revealed one by one (the assignment of a job has to be done before the next job is revealed), and the objective is to minimize the makespan. In the considered variant the optimal offline makespan is known in advance. The most studied question for this online-type problem is to determine the optimal competitive ratio, that is, the worst-case ratio of the solution given by an algorithm in comparison to the optimal offline solution. In this paper, we make a further step towards completing the answer to this question by determining the optimal competitive ratio for s between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], one of the intervals that were still open. Namely, we present and analyze a compound algorithm achieving the previously known lower bounds.

Online scheduling problems have received considerable research interest in the last three decades.In this paper, we summarize new results on online over list scheduling problems on parallel machines, including problems with an objective to minimize the makespan and the $L^p$ norm of machine loads, semi-online scheduling problems on identical, uniform and hierarchial machines, scheduling with rejection and scheduling with machine costs. We also introduce several new directions of online scheduling.

Abstract:This paper considers an online hierarchical scheduling problem on parallel identical machines. We are given a set of m machines and a sequence of jobs. Each machine has a different hierarchy, and each job also has a hierarchy associated with it. A job can be assigned to a machine only if its hierarchy is no less than that of the machine. The objective is to minimize the makespan, i.e., the maximum load of all machines. Two models are studied in the paper. For the fractional model, we present an improved algorithm and lower bounds. Both the algorithm and the lower bound are based on solutions of mathematical programming. For any given m, our algorithm is optimal by numerical calculation. For the integral model, we present both a general algorithm for any m, and an improved algorithm with better competitive ratios of 2.333 and 2.610 for m=4 and 5, respectively.

Abstract:This paper investigates the semi-online machine covering problems on m≥3 parallel identical machines. Three different semi-online versions are studied and optimal algorithms are proposed. We prove that if the total processing time of all jobs or the largest processing time of all jobs is known in advance, the competitive ratios of the optimal algorithms are both m−1. If the total processing time and the largest processing time of all jobs are both known in advance, the competitive ratios of the optimal algorithms are 32 when m=3, and m−2 when m≥4.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a semi on-line version of the parallel machine scheduling problem. We are given a buffer of length k which is available to maintain k jobs. The jobs arrive one by one and can be temporarily assigned to the buffer if the buffer is not full. The goal is to assign all jobs to the identical machines such that the makespan is minimized. For two machines, Kellerer et al. (1995) showed that no heuristic for this problem can have a worst-case ratio lower than 4/3. Abstract:In this paper, motivated by on-line admission control in the hard deadline model, we deal with the following scheduling problem. We are given m identical machines (multi-streams). All jobs (requests) have identical processing time. Each job is associated with a release time and a deadline, neither of which is known until the job arrives. As soon as a job is available, we must immediately decide if the job is accepted or rejected. If a job is accepted, then it must be completed no later than its deadline. The goal is to maximize the total number of jobs accepted. The one-machine case has been extensively studied while little is known for multiple machines. Our main result is deriving a nontrivial optimal online algorithm with competitive ratio $\frac{3}{2}$ for the two-machine case by carefully investigating various strategies. Deterministic lower bounds for the general case are also given.

Abstract:We study the problem of on-line scheduling of parallel jobs on two machines. The jobs are parallel in the sense that each of them specifies the number of processors, in this case 1 or 2, required for simultaneous processing. The jobs are presented one by one. Upon receiving a job, we must assign the job to a time slot in the schedule before the next job is presented. No re-assignment is allowed. The goal is to minimize the makespan of the final schedule. There is a straightforward algorithm which achieves a competitive ratio of 2. In this paper we show that no on-line algorithm can have a competitive ratio less than 1+2/3 (≈1.816). We also study two special cases of the problem: (i) Jobs arrive in a non-decreasing order of processing times where we give an optimal algorithm with competitive ratio 3/2; (ii) Jobs arrive in a non-increasing order of processing times where we show that no on-line algorithm has a competitive ratio less than 9/7 and give a greedy algorithm with a competitive ratio 4/3.

Abstract:We study a variant of classical scheduling, which is called scheduling with “end of sequence” information . It is known in advance that the last job has the longest processing time. Moreover, the last job is marked, and thus it is known for every new job whether it is the final job of the sequence. We explore this model on two uniformly related machines, that is, two machines with possibly different speeds. Two objectives are considered, maximizing the minimum completion time and minimizing the maximum completion time (makespan). Let s be the speed ratio between the two machines, we consider the competitive ratios which are possible to achieve for the two problems as functions of s . We present algorithms for different values of s and lower bounds on the competitive ratio. The proposed algorithms are best possible for a wide range of values of s . For the overall competitive ratio, we show tight bounds of ϕ + 1 ≈ 2.618 for the first problem, and upper and lower bounds of 1.5 and 1.46557 for the second problem.

Abstract:In real world situations, most scheduling problems occur neither as complete off-line nor as complete on-line models. Most likely, a problem arises as an on-line model with some partial information. In this article, we consider such a model. We study the scheduling problem P ( n 1 , n 2 ), where two groups of jobs are to be scheduled. The first job group is available beforehand. As soon as all jobs in the first group are assigned, the second job group appears. The objective is to minimize the longest job completion time (makespan). We show a lower bound of 3/2 even for very special cases. Best possible algorithms are presented for a number of cases. Furthermore, a heuristic is proposed for the general case. The main contribution of this paper is to discuss the impact of the quantity of available information in designing an on-line algorithm. It is interesting to note that the absence of even a little bit information may significantly affect the performance of an algorithm.

Abstract:This paper considers the on-line problem of scheduling nonpreemptively n independent jobs on m > 1 identical and parallel machines with the objective to maximize the minimum machine completion time. It is assumed that the values of the processing times are unknown but the order of the jobs by their processing times is known in advance. We are asked to decide the assignment of all the jobs to some machines at time zero by utilizing only ordinal data rather than the actual magnitudes of jobs. Algorithms to slove the problem are called ordinal algorithms. In this paper, we give lower bounds and ordinal algorithms. We first propose an algorithm MIN which is at most (⌈∑_i = 1^m 1/ i⌉ + 1) -competitive for any m machine case, while the lower bound is ∑ i=1 m 1/i. Both are on the order of Θ(ln m ). Furthermore, for m = 3, we present an optimal algorithm.

Abstract:This paper investigates two different semi on-line scheduling problems on a two-machine system. In the first case, we assume that all jobs have their processing times in between p and rp$(p>0, r\geq1)$. In the second case, we assume that the largest processing time is known in advance.
