Abstract:CO2 reforming of CH4 to synthesis gas was studied over Ni supported on gamma-Al2O3. The results showed that nano-gamma-Al2O3 prepared by sol-gel method presents an excellent support effect. A good texture and fine particles of nano-gamma-Al2O3 supports lead to the formation of smaller particles of nickel after impregnation, calcination and reduction. This kind of nano-composite composed of nano-metal and nano-support presents high activity, antisintering and anti-carbon properties for the dry reforming of methane to syngas.

Abstract:CO2-CH4 reforming into syngas is an effective approach to the utilization of these two greenhouse gases. In this study, nano-structured Ni-based catalysts supported on spinel (MgAl2O4) for CO2-CH4 reforming were synthesized and evaluated under 750-900 degrees C, it performed with extremely high catalytic reactivity that the conversions of CO2 and CH4 were 90% and 97% at 900 degrees C, with gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) as high as 912,000 ml g(Cat)(-1) h(-1), which is 76 times higher than the GHSV reported in other literatures. Also, the nanostructured Ni based catalysts showed excellent durability with nearly zero deactivation in 10 h. Interestingly, the Ni-based catalysts did not need initial H-2 reduction as required with state-of-the-art reforming catalyst. The fresh Ni-based catalysts mainly consist of NiO and MgAl2O4 crystallites, while the spent ones mostly contain Ni-0 (about 10 nm) and MgAl2O4 crystallite.
CO2 Reforming of CH4 over Ni Supported on Nano-ZrO2( I ) - Comparison with Conventional Oxide Supported Nickel

Abstract:The catalytic activity and stability of Ni supported on Y-Al2O3, TiO2, SiO2, conventional ZrO2-CP, and nano-ZrO2-AS(15-20 nm) were comparatively studied for CO2 reforming of CH, to synthesis gas. The Ni loading in these catalysts was limited to 5% (mass fraction) of the supports, and the reaction was performed in a fixed-bed flow microreactor at 1 030 K with GHSV = 2.4 X 10(4) mL/(h . g cat). The initial CH, conversions of the catalysts are in the order of Ni/gamma-Al2O3 > Ni/TiO2 > Ni/ZrO2-CP > Ni/ZrO2-AS>Ni/SiO2. Ni catalysts supported on gamma-Al2O3 TiO2, ZrO2-CP and SiO2 deactivated rapidly in less than 50 h TOS, but Ni/ZrO2-AS catalyst showed no deactivation for longer than 200 h. The pure ZrO2-AS also showed a catalytic activity for the reaction and no loss of the activity was observed during 50 h on stream at 1 073 K. TPO measurements demonstrated that carbon deposition on the Ni/ZrO2-AS catalyst was much less and was eliminated at lower temperature than those over the other catalysts. Explanation for the excellent stability of Ni/ZrO2-AS catalyst was given based on the present data. It, is suggested that Ni/ZrO2-AS can be better expressed as a nano-composite of the Ni and ZrO2-AS, and high percentage of the metal-support perimeter in the composite seems crucial for the long stability of the catalyst.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> BACKGROUND</h3>CO2 reforming of methane, also known as dry reforming of methane, has received significant attention because this technology can convert notorious greenhouse gases (CH4/CO2) into useful syngas (H2/CO). However, this technology still hasn't been commercialized, primarily due to the lack of feasible catalysts. </section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> RESULTS</h3>Based on zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles with pure monoclinic (m) or tetragonal (t) crystal phase, three nickel (Ni) catalysts (Ni/m‐ZrO2, Ni/t‐ZrO2 and Ni/m‐ZrO2@Al2O3) have been synthesized for CO2 reforming of methane. The Ni/t‐ZrO2 catalyst exhibited lowest reforming activity with CH4 conversion of 15.5% at 700 °C under 1 atm with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 96 000 mL/(h gcat). The Ni/m‐ZrO2 catalyst showed much higher initial activity but underwent severe deactivation, over which CH4 conversion decreased from 56.1% to 33.4% after 300 min of reaction. The nanocomposite Ni/m‐ZrO2@Al2O3 catalyst with confinement effect possessed the best activity and good stability. Specifically, its CH4 conversion decreased merely from 60.2% to 55.3% after 24 h of reaction. </section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> CONCLUSION</h3>Structural characterizations demonstrate that limited specific surface area and weak metal‐support interactions existed on the Ni/t‐ZrO2 catalyst, which led to large Ni nanoparticles and thus poor reforming activity. Both Ni/m‐ZrO2 and Ni/m‐ZrO2@Al2O3 catalysts had high specific surface area and tiny Ni nanoparticles, which may rationalize the high reforming activity. The improved stability on the Ni/m‐ZrO2@Al2O3 catalyst was mainly related to the alleviated carbon deposition endowed by enriched surface basicity and strengthened metal‐support interactions. Abstract:Nickel catalyst is an effective catalyst for reforming CH4 with CO2. The reaction between CO2 and CH4 at 1073K in the pressure of 0.1MPa has been studied over different materials supported nickel metal in a fixed-bed reactor. Different catalysts before and after reaction were characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS. Results shows that CO and H-2 are basically produced at the same ratio. When the feed ratio CO2/CH4 is less than 0.5, less C-2 similar to C-4 hydrocarbons are detected. When the feed ratio CO2/CH4 is 1, Ni/alpha-Al2O3 catalyst has the highest activity. However, when the feed ratio CO2/CH4 is greater than 1, Ni/gamma-Al2O3, Ni/alpha-Al2O3, Ni/SiO2 and Ni/HZSM-5 had higher activity; Ni/clinoptilolite basically no activity. Different kinds of carbon deposit are established.

Abstract:Co‐Ni bimetal‐doped ordered mesoporous Al2O3 composite oxides with different Co/(Co+Ni) ratios were designed and fabricated by a one‐pot evaporation‐induced self‐assembly method. The obtained materials, which had an ordered mesostructure and outstanding thermal stability, were investigated as catalysts for the CO2 reforming of CH4. The effects of the Co/(Co+Ni) molar ratios and ordered mesostructure on the catalytic performances were investigated systematically. The ordered mesoporous Co‐Ni bimetallic catalysts exhibited both higher catalytic activities and better anticoke properties than the corresponding monometallic materials because of the Co‐Ni synergistic effect. Furthermore, the ordered mesostructure could promote the catalytic performances significantly by providing gaseous reactants with enough accessible metallic active centers and stabilizing the metallic nanoparticles through the confinement effect of the mesoporous framework. As a result, these mesoporous Co‐Ni bimetallic catalysts had more enhanced catalytic properties and anticoke ability than traditional supported catalysts toward the CO2 reforming of CH4, which promises a series of potential catalyst candidates.

Abstract:The reaction activity for reforming of CH 4 with CO 2 over supported Ni catalyst was investigated in a fixed-bed reactor at 600 �� 900��C. It was found that the initial activity depended essentially on Ni state which was related to its interaction with the support. In preparation process, the conditions, such as calcining temperature and Ni loading, had a great effect on the interaction, and the formation of NiAl 2O 4 spinel decreased the activity at lower reaction temperature but enhanced CO 2 conversion at higher reaction temperature. The heated or calcined support would increase the surface area of the catalyst, but have a little effect on its activity. Under the given conditions, the state and distribution of Ni phase would be related to Ni loading. The interaction between Ni and Al 2O 3 would be dominant for the catalyst with lower Ni loading. So it would lead to a maximum value of activity at lower reaction temperature, and lead to less carbon deposition.
Role of Support in CO2 Reforming of CH4 over a Ni/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst

Abstract:A catalyst of 10% Ni/γ-Al2O3 for CO2/CH4 reforming was prepared and characterized by TPR, TPD, XPS, XRD and activity measurements. XPS and TPR showed that Ni mainly exists in the form of NiAl2O4 in the calcined catalyst and is hard to reduce below 650°C, indicating a strong interaction between metal and support. Reduction of the calcined catalyst results in fine particles of Ni0, with an average diameter of about 20nm as determined by XRD. The uptake of H on the reduced catalyst measured by H2-TPD is 4.2–4.6mole per mole of Ni species and does not depend on the reduction degree of Ni species. This provides a convincing piece of evidence for the occurrence of hydrogen spillover in the reduced catalyst. Only reduced catalysts present good activity, but the degree of nickel reduction has almost no effect on the reforming activity. This seems to suggest that Ni0 is vital for the reforming activity, but γ-Al2O3 is also involved in CO2/CH4 reforming and contributes even more. Based on the mechanism proposed by Bradford et al. and on our observations, a mechanistic model has been proposed to elucidate the role of γ-Al2O3 in CO2/CH4 reforming.

Abstract:CH4-CO2reforming has attracted growing attention because it can efficiently utilize two greenhouse gases and convert them into valuable syngas with low H2/CO ratio.Ni based catalysts have been extensively investigated for their high activity and low cost, but they also suffer from coke deposition and sintering problems.In this paper, recent progresses in Ni-based reforming catalysts are summarized and analyzed taken into account reaction kinetics, reaction thermodynamics and formation mechanism of carbon deposition, with a particular emphasis over promoters and their roles.Finally, the bottleneck and future development trend of the titled reaction are briefly described.

Such prepared catalyst showed a highly dispersed active species over the support and an enhanced stability. A Ni/Al 2O 3 catalyst was prepared this way for CO 2 reforming of methane. Abstract:CO2 reforming of CH4 was studied at 1030 K over Ni/ZrO2 catalysts with different preparations. It was shown that catalytic stability depends greatly on the preparation method of the support precursor. The catalyst prepared by impregnation of ultra-fine Zr(OH)4 (6 nm) particles with nickel nitrate showed high and extremely stable activity for syngas production. In contrast, the nickel catalyst prepared using bigger Zr(OH)4 particles deactivated rapidly. Also, the nickel catalyst made from co-precipitation of ultra-fine nickel–zirconium hydroxide (7 nm) was not resistant to coke deposition during the reaction.

Ni-Based Nanocomposite Catalysts For Energy-Saving Syngas And Hydrogen Production From Ch4/Co2 And Ch4/Co2/H2o

Abstract:This presentation describes our recent investigation on energy saving catalysts for natural gas conversion. Nanostructured Ni-oxide (oxide = ZrO2, MgO and Al2O3) catalysts are prepared as nanocomposites consisting of comparably sized metallic Ni nanocrystals and nanopaticles of "support" oxides. Compared with the conventional oxide-supported Ni catalysts, featuring metallic Ni nanocrystals on oxide support particles of one to several orders of magnitude larger, the nanocomposite catalysts are found extremely stable in catalyzing the methane reforming reactions using stoichiometric CO2 and methane as well as steam (H2O) and methane. The nanocomposite catalysts show also stable catalysis for a combined steam and CO2 reforming of methane under stoichiometric feed compositions, enabling modulation of product syngas molar ratios (H2/CO = 1.0-3.0) by varying the feed H2O/CO2 ratio. Further tests of nanocomposite Ni-ZrO2 and Ni-MgO catalysts for hydrogen generation by stepwised methane reforming processes, involving a catalytic methane decomposition to produce pure hydrogen and carbon deposits as the first step (step-I) and a volatilization of the carbon deposits by steam or CO2 as the second step (step-II) demonstrate that the nanocomposite catalysts are optimistic for energy-saving in methane reforming technologies.
