Abstract:Without the use of a metal catalyst in the process, ZnO with nanostructures was successfully prepared on Si (100) substrate by simple chemical vapor-deposition method. In our work, Ar was used as the plasma forming gas, O2 was the reactive gas and metal zinc powder (99.99% purity) vaporized by cylinder hollow-cathode discharge (HCD) acted as the zinc source. The crystal structures of the as-synthesized ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD); the ZnO sample growing on the wall of the crucible showed a ‘comb-like’ nanostructure, while the other one at the bottom of the crucible showed a ‘rod-like’ structure, which can be attributed to the difference of the oxygen content. The measurement on the photoluminescence (PL) performance of the ZnO nanostructures was carried out at room temperature. The results indicated that the ‘comb-shape’ ZnO nanomaterial possessed a remarkably strong ultraviolet emission peak centered at 388 nm, while ZnO nanorods, except better ultraviolet emission, also had relatively strong blue-green emission ranging from 470 to 600 nm due to the existence of oxygen vacancies. The growth mechanism of ZnO with nanostructures is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Arrays of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and nanobelts were synthesized by the thermal evaporation of mixed powders of ZnO and graphite. Neither catalyst nor vacuum environment was involved in the fabrication. For comparison, the ZnO nanowires were grown on a pre-deposited transitional ZnO film on a brass substrate and the ZnO nanobelts were grown directly on a Si substrate. Their field emission properties were systematically measured. Current density of 10μA/cm2 was achieved at the fields of 5.7 and 6.2V/μm from the nanowires and nanobelts, respectively. Also, the emission sites were found to distribute uniformly on the whole cathode. In the preliminary test on the stability, the ZnO nanobelts, which were sharp at the tip but wide at the root, exhibited better robustness than the ZnO nanowires. The post-test scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that the degradation of their field emission capability resulted from the breaking of the nanowires, which was tentatively attributed to the resistive heating during the field emission. In contrast, the shedding of the ZnO from the substrate was not so serious as imagined.

Abstract:A structure composed of zinc oxide nanowires (ZNWs) grown hydrothermally on an array of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was fabricated and its field emission properties determined and compared with bare CNF arrays. The combination produced a macroscopic turn-on field of 1.2 V/μm which was found to be the lowest reported from ZNWs deposited on a two-dimensional substrate and much less than the equivalent CNFs array (5.2 V/μm). Crucially, field emission was found to be much more stable at higher pressures of 5×10−6 mbar without exhibiting current degradation for a fixed external field, while emitting with a current density of 1 mA/cm2, the current density typically required for backlighting and field emission displays. We propose a self-ballasting mechanism, in which the low carrier density in the zinc oxide prevents current runaway in the presence of adsorbed species.

Abstract:Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nano-pikes were produced by oxidative evaporation and condensation of Zn powders. The crystalline structure and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures (ZnONs) greatly depend on the deposition position of the ZnONs. TEM and XRD indicated that the ZnONs close to the reactor center, ZnON-A, has better crystalline structure than the ZnONs away from the center, ZnON-B. ZnON-A showed the PL and Raman spectra characteristic of perfect ZnO crystals, whereas ZnON-B produced very strong green emission band at 500 nm in the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and very strong Raman scattering peak at 560 cm(-1), both related to the oxygen deficiency due to insufficient oxidation of zinc vapor. ZnON-B exhibited better field emission properties with higher emission current density and lower turn-on field than ZnON-A.

Abstract:Summary form only given. ZnO Nano-chrysanthemum arrays are both synthesized on silicon nano-needles and in silicon micro-holes with hydrothermal method. A ZnO Nano-chrysanthemum is a bunch of ZnO nanorods reaches out from one root. The influence of the reaction time has been carefully discussed and the Van der Waals force is regarded as the driving force from one needle to one Nano-chrysanthemum. This configuration helps suppressing the field screen-effect at a relatively high emission tip density. The influence of the reaction time and the concentration of hydrothermal solution on morphology have been carefully discussed. Turn-on fields as low as 3.35 V/μm and 5.25V/μm from ZnO nano-chrysanthemum on silicon nano-needles and in silicon micro-holes are reported, respectively. A field enhancement factor of 5523 is estimated for ZnO nano-chrysanthemum on silicon nano-needles.

Abstract:Summary form only given. High efficiency low-voltage cathodoluminescent phosphor is one of the key materials in developing field emission displays. High brightness, high resolution and fine images of phosphor screen are related to the size of phosphor particles and the layer thickness in the screen. Low voltage phosphor powder for field emission display (FED) has been triturated to super small grains, after special treatment, the phosphors are deposited onto the anode screen of FED devices, with printing method, the phosphor powder was made up to different phosphor thin films with varied thickness. SEM was employed to observe the phosphor particles and the phosphor thin films. Experiments have been carried out on analyzing the different characters of the cathodoluminescence of the treated low voltage phosphor and its phosphor screen.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures were synthesised on nickel metallic wires using electrodeposited method in a mixed solution of zinc nitrate [Zn(NO3)(2)] and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterisation. The XRD patterns revealed the formation of a wurtzite phase of ZnO only. The SEM images showed that the formation of ZnO nanostructures could be adjusted by increasing the electrolyte concentration. Field emission measurements demonstrated that ZnO nanopillars with befitting density exhibited the lowest turn on field and the highest current density. The ZnO nanostructures with field emission performance may have potentials in the future of vacuum electronic devices.

Abstract:ZnO nanowires with good field emission properties were prepared by a non-catalyst thermal oxidization method. The study of temperature dependent field emission shows that the defects play an important role in the field emission process. Addressable field emitter arrays using ZnO nanowires were fabricated and applied in a display device. Good gate-controlled characteristics and the display of video images are realized. The results demonstrate that feasibility of large area ZnO nanowire field emitter arrays.

Abstract:In the present work, ZnO nanostructures with tunable size were successfully synthesized on non-seeded Cu substrates by a simple electrodeposition method. The effects of growth conditions on the morphology of the products were studied in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared products exhibited flake-like morphology when the concentration of ZnCl2 was higher enough, while the products showed flower-like morphology when the concentration was lower enough. Field emission investigation indicated that the nanoflowers exhibited good emission properties. The ZnO nanoflowers show potential application as field emitters.

Abstract:Large-area and uniform ZnO nanowires have been produced directly on a conducting brass substrate by annealing a Cu0.66Zn0.34 foil under a mixture of argon and oxygen. The morphology, structure, and composition of the ZnO nanowires are characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The ZnO nanowires with diameters of about 40-70 nm and lengths up to micrometers grow preferentially along the [001] direction. Since the Cu0.66Zn0.34 foil serves as both the Zn source and substrate, the synthesis and assembly of the ZnO nanowires on a conducting substrate is accomplished in one step, and good intrinsic adhesion and robust electrical contact between the ZnO nanowires and conducting substrate are realized. This ZnO configuration forms an ideal field emitter and good field emission properties are corroborated in this study. Photoluminescence studies indicate that these ZnO nanowires have good optical quality exhibiting strong ultraviolet (UV) emission at 383 nm and a weak visible emission band centered around 485 nm at room temperature. The good field emission and optical properties suggest that ZnO nanowires fabricated by this method have promising applications in nano-optoelectronic and field emission devices.

Abstract:ZnO nanowire field emitter arrays were fabricated for field emission display application by combining a microfabrication and self-assembly processes. The ZnO nanowires were synthesized without catalyst by thermal oxidation of zinc thin film. In order to improve its performance and fabrication compatibility with device structure, the effects of oxidation temperature and film deposition method were studied. The characteristics of the ZnO nanowire field emitter arrays in a fully-sealed 3.5 inch field emission device will be presented.

Abstract:The cathodoluminescent properties of nanocrystalline Lu3Ga5O12:Tb3+ phosphor films were investigated. Phosphor films were prepared on indium tin oxide coated glass by a screen printing method. The Lu3Ga5O12:Tb3+ phosphor is mixed with In2O3 nanoparticles to improve the luminescence and degradation properties of phosphor films under electron excitation. Cathodoluminescent spectra and luminance degradation behavior of the Lu3Ga5O12:Tb3+ phosphor films under electron bombardment were studied. Enhancement of the luminescence was observed after being mixed with In2O3 nanoparticles. Also, the In2O3 mixed Lu3Ga5O12:Tb3+ phosphor shows improvement of the resistance to the electron bombardment. The results show that the Lu3Ga5O12:Tb3+ phosphor is stable under electron bombardment and has potential for application in field emission display devices. (C) 2010 American Vacuum Society. Abstract:The field emission properties of ZnO are often strongly affected by their morphology and structure. The field emission properties of the 3D urchin-like ZnO nanostructures, which consisted of ZnO nanorods with sharp tips and were self-assembled via a simple hydrothermal route, are investigated in detail. The urchin-like ZnO nanostructures show a good field emission performance with a turn-on field of approximately 3.7 V microm(-1) (at 10 microA cm(-2)) and a threshold field of approximately 4.8 V microm(-1) (at 1 mA cm(-2)) and good stability (<4%, during a 250 min test). The field enhancement factor beta is estimated to be 1239. The field emission performance from the present ZnO forms can be comparable to the best value of ZnO nanostructures reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that the ZnO nanorod sharp tip morphology results in a good and stable field emission performance, which may find applications in field emitters.

Abstract:We have prepared zinc oxide nanocrystals using a new type of solid-state reaction. The nanosized grains were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and the sizes were determined to be from 10 to 42 nm. The lattice vibrational Raman spectra were measured and assigned at different grain sizes. We observed a strong visible emission centred at 580 nm in the nanosized ZnO at room temperature. We have investigated the photoluminescence properties under different grain sizes after annealing. The weakening of the luminescence is attributed to the decrease of intrinsic structural defects, mainly, oxygen vacancies and the increase of the grain size in the nanocrystals.

Abstract:This article focuses on the field emission from a small number of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires. ZnO nanowires were grown directly on W tips and their field emission was studied in a traditional field emission microscope (FEM). The FEM pattern of a single ZnO nanowire was ring shaped, indicating that most of the emission from the (0001) facets of the ZnO nanowires came from their circumferences. Scanning electron microscopy observation, measurement of dependence of the emission current on the applied cathode voltage (I-V behavior), and acquirement of FEM patterns were performed before and after heat treatment of the samples, respectively. The heat treatment was found to play either a favorable or an unfavorable role. It could lead to a stable emission or damage of the emitters, depending on the heating conditions.

Abstract:ZnO nanorods with different morphologies were grown by changing the temperature of the process using the thermal vapor deposition method without a catalyst. The X-ray diffraction pattern of these nanorods showed a single-crystalline wurtzite structure and a c-axis orientation. The turn-on fields of the pencil-like and normal ZnO nanorods were 1.7 V/mu m and 2.2 V/mu m at a current density of 0.1 mu A/cm(2), and the emission current density from the ZnO nanorods reached 1 mA/cm(2) at bias fields of 5.1 V/mu m and 7.5 V/mu m, respectively. Highly Efficient Field Emission From Zno Nanorods And Nanographene Hybrids On A Macroporous Electric Conductive Network

Abstract:A hybrid structure comprising zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods and nanographene on a patterned substrate enhances the field emission properties by reducing the work function, avoiding electrostatic screening, and providing more emitters. A theoretical energy-band model is fabricated to analyze the field emission process of the ZnO nanorods and nanographene hybrids. And the structure is modeled with equipotential lines and simulated by Ansys to present the advantages of the three-dimensional (3D) patterned substrate. After theoretical modeling and simulation, a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly method that is suitable for industrial production is developed to fabricate ZnO nanorods and nanographene hybrids on a 3D macroporous electric conductive network (MECN). The nanographene is coated on the MECN by hydrothermal carbonization to circumvent the substrate limitation and ZnO nanorods are prepared on the nanographene/MECN substrate hydrothermally. The ZnO nanorods, similar to 600 nm long with a diameter of about 70 nm, in combination with nanographene show sharp edges and an ordered lattice pattern and, therefore, electrons flow from the nanographene to the ZnO nanorods and are emitted more easily. The ZnO nanorods/nanographene/MECN has highly efficient field emission properties such as a low turn-on voltage E-on of 0.5 V mu m(-1) at a current density of 10 mu A cm(-2), and a large field enhancement factor beta of 25550, as well as excellent sustainability and consequently great potential in displays, lighting, and sensors.

Abstract:An extremely simple method has been successfully employed to prepare ZnO nanorods.ZnO nanorods with the diameter of about 100nm are prepared by hydrothermal growth in solutions of ammonia and zinc chloride,and the field emission properties are tested.The low values of turn-on field and threshold field are 2.7V/μm and 4.95V/μm,respectively,which are achieved from these nanorods.A high field enhancement factor of 5390 is due to the hierarchical structure of ZnO nanorods.The morphology and the composition of ZnO nanorods are characterized by SEM and EDS.

Abstract:A variety of one-dimensional (1D) micro- and nanostructures of zinc oxide (ZnO) were self-assembled on amorphous carbons using thermal chemical vapor transport and condensation without any metal catalysts. The low turn-on electronic field and the higher current density were achieved on these 1D ZnO micro- and nanostructural emitters. It was found that the geometry of the micro- and nanostructural emitters plays a crucial role in the field emission of ZnO.

Abstract:We review the current development in synthesis and deposition techniques of quasi-one-dimensional nanomaterials and recent achievements in the study of the field electron emission properties of these materials. Major findings are given from our recent experimental study of the field electron emission characteristics of carbon nanotubes, copper sulfide and silicon carbide nanorods. The study reveals that the above nanomaterials are promising candidates as cold cathode electron emitters. Furthermore, we review the recent development of techniques for growing and depositing the above nanomaterials in device structures. Typical device structures and their performance are also shown.
