Abstract:Objective: To study effects of dopamine on the development of myopia. Methods: 52 neonatal rabbits of seven-day-old were divided into group A, B and C and were monocularly deprived (MD) of pattern vision by suturation of right eyelids. In group A(n = 20), no drug was used, while rabbits in group B and C received a series of intravitreal injection of dopamine (n = 16) and saline vehicle (n = 16) with MD. Results: VCL, AL and VCL/AL but not ACD and LT of experimental eyes showed a significant difference in group A and C(P < 0.001). Scleral collagenous fibres of experimental eyes get markedly thinner in group A and C, but these get less in group B. Conclusion: Form deprivation can induce axial elongation, longer vitreous chamber and higher VCL/AL and thinner scleral fibre play a crucial role in the onset of myopia, while dopamine can partly block these changes.
