Abstract:Irradiation resistance of as-studied scintillating glass samples were tested under the 60Co γ-ray radiation at doses between 60 and 700Gy. Photoluminescence properties of glasses with and without cerium ions were investigated to show the effect of cerium (III) on the luminescence of ZnO. Ultraviolet and visible optical transmittance spectra were compared before and after irradiation treatment. The so-called radiation-induced absorption coefficient (RIAC) was introduced to compare more effectively the radiation damage on glass samples. The much reduced transmittance change and decreased RIAC value in UV–Vis region indicate that the density of electron centers and hole centers caused by radiation decreased, which helps to confirm that the reduction and oxidation reaction of cerium ions took place in radiation process. From RIAC curves, it can be seen that TiO2 enhances the irradiation resistance of sample in UV region. However, high TiO2 content has negative effect on visible transmittance of glasses after the higher dose irradiation (700Gy).

Abstract:The construction of cerium-doped materials is of great technological importance for various applications, including smart lighting, biological shielding and high-energy ray and particle detection. A major challenge is the efficient prevention of the undesired colorization after cerium doping. Here we present the nanocrystallization method for constructing colorless cerium-doped glass with extremely high cerium concentration (15 mol%). The structure and optical characterizations confirm that the notable color change of glass is associated with the precipitation of CeF3 crystalline phase during heat-treatment. The chemical state investigation shows that most of cerium ions exist in the form of Ce3+ in both the glass and glass-ceramic samples. The chemical environment study indicates a dramatic change in the local structure unit from -Ce-O- to -Ce-F-, which is believed to dominate the decoloring phenomenon in cerium doped glass. As a result, a significant improvement in the ultraviolet excited luminescence (~35 times enhancement in intensity) and scintillating performance can be achieved, pointing to potential applications in X-ray detection.

Abstract:In the present work Ce3+-doped germanate glasses containing Gd2O3 and BaO or La2O3 were developed. The UV and VIS transmission spectra of these glasses were measured before and after irradiation at doses ranging between 3 and 277 Gy. The radiation induced absorption coefficient μ was calculated on the basis of the measured transmission spectra. From these results the cerium ions doping turns out to be effective in improving the radiation hardness of glasses with respect to their undoped matrices.

Abstract:Radiation-induced transmission spectral variations of Ce3+-doped heavy germanate glasses used as scintillating materials are presented. Glass matrix contains mainly GeO2, BaO and Gd2O3 with a density higher than 5g/cm3. Glasses are melted in the different atmosphere. The transmission spectra of glasses before and after radiation treatments are measured and compared. Unlike exhibiting the monotonous deterioration effect on the glass matrix, radiation plays the radiation protection role, even making enhanced transmission of Ce3+-doped glasses, depending upon glass melting atmosphere and radiation dose. Radiation-induced reducing and oxidizing mechanism is proposed to explain phenomena.

Abstract:Optical transparency and irradiation resistance of some heavy metal germanate glasses doped with scintillating rare earth ions are characterized. Glass compositions involve GeO 2, Gd 2O 3, BaO, SnO, La 2O 3, and rare earth dopants include Ce 3+, Tb 3+ and Pr 3+. The results indicate that the glass matrices have moderate UV cut-off edges at about 350 nm wavelength, which are suitable for hosting these rare earths respect to their emission wavelengths. The UV cut-off positions are obviously shifted to red by the additives of Sn 2+ and Ce 3+, due to the different UV absorption mechanism occurring in glasses. Ce 3+, Tb 3+, Pr 3+ and Sn 2+ are found to exert positive influences on irradiation resistance of glasses and Ce 3+ plays the most pronounced role. Such phenomena are mainly attributed to variable valences of these cations.

Abstract:Emerging technologies are demanding innovative properties of glasses. In this work, Cerium Oxide is used as a dopant in Zinc-Tellurite samples and its effects on the properties of the glass are investigated. Thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of all samples. The bivalent nature of Cerium is investigated spectroscopically and a strong redshift induced by the dopant is attributed to charge transfers O$^{2-}{\rightarrow}$Ce$^{4+}$, while the 4f-5d transition of Ce$^{3+}$ could not be identified in absorption or luminescence measurements. Yellow/red (570/650 nm) emission under 405/450 nm pumping were observed and are originated from Te$^{4+}$ ions, which absorbs light in the UV/blue region of the spectrum. The incorporation of some Cerium Oxide enhanced the visible luminescence, though we found no evidence that Cerium ions play some role in the radiative process. The luminescence is enhanced though due changes in the glass network induced by the dopant.

Abstract:The growing demand for radiation-resistant optical glasses for space and nuclear radiation applications has attracted significant research interest. However, radiation-resistant fluorophosphate glasses have been poorly studied. In this work, we report on the tailoring and performance of radiation-resistant fluorophosphate glasses that contained cerium through codoping with Sb2O3 and Bi2O3. The physical properties, optical properties, microstructure, and defects of fluorophosphate glasses were investigated using transmittance measurements, absorption measurements, as well as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The results showed that the radiation resistance of all codoped fluorophosphate glasses was better than the undoped cerium-containing fluorophosphate glasses after 10–250 krad(Si) irradiation. Especially in glasses doped with Bi2O3, the optical density increment at 385 nm was only 0.1482 after 250 krad(Si) irradiation. The CeO2 prevented the development of phosphate-related oxygen hole center (POHC) defects, whereas further codoping with Bi2O3 suppressed the formation of oxygen hole center (OHC) and POEC defects, reducing the breaking of phosphate chains caused by CeO2. Bi3+ is more likely than Sb3+ to change the valence, affecting the transition equilibrium of intrinsic defects and reducing the concentration of defects produced by irradiation. When codoping with Sb2O3 and Bi2O3, Bi2O3 does not enhance radiation resistance owing to the scission effect of Sb2O3 on the phosphate chain, which is not conducive to the radiation resistance of glasses. This indicates that the cerium-containing fluorophosphate glasses doped with Bi2O3 can effectively suppress the defects caused by irradiation and improve the radiation resistance of the glasses.

Abstract:The structure and microstructure of zirconolite-based glass-ceramics were characterized by XRD and SEM, respectively. The normalized release rate of Ce (NRCe) was measured by the ASTM Product Consistency Test (PCT) leaching method. Results show that when CeO2 content is ranged from 0wt% to 1wt%, two zirconolite crystals, monoclinic (CaZrTi2O7-2M) and hexagonal layered structure (CaZrTi2O7-2T), form in the bulk glass. When the content of CeO2 increases from 3 wt% to 11 wt%, the monoclinic layered structure phase disappears. The unit cell parameters and cell volume V of zirconolite phase (CaZrTi2O7-2T) increase with the increase of CeO2 content. The leaching resistance shows that the solidified radioactive waste forms would be stable for the eventual geological disposal, and leaching rate of Ce3+ reaches 10(-7) g.m(-2).d(-1) at 28 d.

Abstract:We investigated the effect of cerium oxide on the precipitation of Ag nanoparticles in silicate glass via a femtosecond laser irradiation and successive annealing. Absorption spectra show that Ce3+ ions may absorb part of the laser energy via multiphoton absorption and release free electrons, resulting in an increase of the concentration of Ag atoms and a decrease of the concentration of hole-trapped color centers, which influence precipitation of the Ag nanoparticles. In addition, we found that the formed Ag0 may reduce Ce4+ ions to Ce3+ ions during the annealing process, which inhibits the growth of the Ag nanoparticles.

Abstract:AbstractOptical properties and irradiation resistance of heavy metal oxide tellurite glasses in the TeO2‐PbO‐Bi2O3‐B2O3 system doped with different ions are investigated. The results indicate that the matrix glass has a moderate UV cut‐off edges at about 386 nm wavelength. The UV cut‐off positions are obviously shifted to red by the addition of Ce4+. The introduction of Cr3+, Ce4+ and Ni2+ into the matrix glass exerts positive influences on irradiation resistance of glasses and cerium plays the most pronounced role. Abstract:Neodymium doping of photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass leads to a fast non-radiative depopulation of excited states of cerium ions, which are responsible for the glass photosensitivity. The non-radiative energy transfer from cerium to neodymium ions results in a decrease in the efficiency of photoelectron generation under UV irradiation. Emission spectra and fluorescence decay curves of cerium ions under UV excitation were investigated. Absorption spectra of the glasses were obtained as well to distinguish the reabsorption processes and the non-radiative energy transfer mechanisms. It was found that as Nd 2 O 3 concentration increases from 0 to 2 mol%, cerium ions average lifetime decreases from 44.5 to 28 ns, while the energy transfer efficiency reaches 37 %. It was also found that Förster resonance energy transfer may compete with other relaxation mechanisms and the Förster distance for the Ce 3+ -Nd 3+ pair in PTR glass is ∼0.33 nm. This study has important implications for future research; it informs future studies on optimizing the photosensitivity of the PTR glass and choosing rare-earth activators.

Abstract:Cerous ion-doped heavy-metal germinate glasses were prepared and their transmission, emission and excitation spectra were measured. The results show that the emission peak wavelength of Ce3+ has an obvious red-shift due to the higher optical basicity of germanate glasses. It was also found that the addition of La3+ disperses Ce3+ in the glass matrix, enhances the doping content of Ce3+ in the glasses and reduces the effect of concentration quenching. As for Ce3+ and Tb3+ co-doped glasses, the luminescence inten- sities of Ce3+ and Tb3+ both decrease. This could be related to the competitive absorption between Ce3+ and Tb3+ because their excita- tion peaks pile up on the wavelength of 351—381 nm.

Abstract:Cerate nanoceramics have been recently considered key materials for radiative thermal management and enhanced solar reflectance. Herein, we demonstrate by means of first-principles Density Functional Theory calculations how experimentally prepared La2Ce2O7 and Al2Ce2O7 materials with defective fluorite structure exhibit superior temperature stability, strong UV-vis/Near-infrared reflectance along with tunable midinfrared emissivity, thus representing excellent host matrices for doping-controlled chromatic and thermal properties. By means of phonon dispersion analysis, we demonstrate how disorder and Al+3 impurity introduction induce locally distorted chemical environments that can be exploited for achieving selective infrared emittance for passive radiative cooling devices.

We report here on measurements of scintillation yield, transmission and decay time, on large blocks of Ce3+-doped Gd2O3-based glasses, the samples were excited by a high energy X-ray beam and the associated scintillation yield and decay time was measured. The optical transmission of the samples was measured. It was observed that scintillation yield of present scintillation glass is 20-30% of EGO scintillation yield, decay time is in range of 60-90ns, glass density is 5.75g/cm(3). It was concluded that higher density and availability and low cost make this glass become promising candidate for cerium doped dense scintillator.

Abstract:ZnO based silicate glasses are presented in the present paper. Irradiation resistance of glass samples is tested under the gamma ray radiation at the doses of 71 and 262 Gy. Ultraviolet and visible transmitting spectra of glass samples are compared before and after irradiation treatment. Test results show that irradiation damage on ZnO containing glasses increases with dose while the glass with the Al2O3 donor dopants exhibits much improved irradiation resistance. The latter can be correlated to band-gap broadening effect due to Al2O3 doping in the ZnO containing glass and to the role of Al3+ as the network intermediate to enter partially the tetrahedral structure of silicate glass.

Abstract:In this work, we revealed the possible mechanisms of the photodarkening in Pr3+ ions singly doped and Pr3+/Ce3+ co‐doped silicate glasses and fibers induced by X‐ray and 488‐nm laser radiations and studied the role of Ce3+ in increasing radiation resistance in Pr3+‐doped silicate glasses and fibers. The absorption, emission, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), radiation induced attenuation spectra, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of Pr3+ singly doped and Pr3+/Ce3+ co‐doped silicate glasses before and after X‐ray radiation were measured and analyzed. The fluorescence intensity and photoinduced attenuation of Pr3+ singly doped and Pr3+/Ce3+ co‐doped silicate fibers at visible wavelengths pumped by 488‐nm laser were measured and analyzed. The influence of Ce3+ ions co‐doping on the spectroscopic properties of Pr3+ ions as well as the radiation‐induced defects in silicate glasses was studied. Results demonstrate that both X‐ray and 488‐nm laser radiations will induce photodamage in Pr3+ ions‐doped silicate glasses and fibers. Co‐doping Ce3+ (by up to 1 mol%) is efficient to suppress the darkening induced by both X‐ray and 488‐nm laser radiations without influence on the luminescence behavior of Pr3+ ions in silicate glasses and fibers. Our studies demonstrate the promising potential of Pr3+/Ce3+ co‐doped silicate glasses for visible lasing applications.

Abstract:A spectroscopic investigation of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped 50SiO2–20Al2O3–30CaF2 glasses and transparent glass ceramics containing CaF2 nanocrystals is presented. The formation of CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramic was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Judd–Ofelt parameters of the Er3+ ions in the glass and glass ceramic have been calculated; they suggested that Er3+ ions had been incorporated into CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics. The upconversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic was much stronger than that of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass. The upconversion luminescence mechanism has been ascribed to a two-photon absorption process for the green and red luminescence and a three-photon absorption process for the blue luminescence.

Abstract:Various cerium doped aluminosilicate glass was prepared by a high-temperature melting method using natural granite material as the only origin of the glass substrate. TG-DSC was used to understand the changes of this aluminosilicate material in the melting process. The structure of the glass was systematically studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra. This type of aluminosilicate material begins to vitrify at about 1000 degrees C, and its maximum vitrification degree was obtained at 1500 degrees C. The structure of the glassy waste forms prepared at this temperature is mainly composed of Q(3) and Q(4) structural units. With the addition of cerium ions, the proportion can even reach 82%. Such good glass integrity makes this type of aluminosilicate glass density and hardness up to 2.89 g cm(-3) and 7.80 GPa, respectively. However, the addition of excessive cerium ions destroys the integrity of the network, resulting in that the glass can only carry 17 wt% cerium ions at most. At this point, 55.93% of Ce4+ ions are reduced to Ce3+. In the meantime, cerium ions are evenly distributed in the glass network. This study provides a strategy for the treatment of radioactive waste with similar properties with cerium ions.
