Abstract:In the continuous tuning process of the electric tunable liquid crystal Fabry-Perot filter (LCFPF), the phenomenon of the jumping of the transmission peak spectrums is found. And this phenomenon influences the monotone tuning performance of the device. Analysis for this phenomenon shows that its due to the change of the interference order of Fabry-Perot cavity in the tuning process. And the relationship between the transmission peak wavelength λ, the interference order m, and the index n of the medium in the Fabry-Perot cavity is given, as well as the effective tuning range of the device. When the length of the cavity is 10 μm, the tuning range will cover the whole C Band with the index difference of only 0.05. The experimental result is in agreement with the numeric simulation. At last, some approaches are presented in order to improve the monotone tuning performance of the device.

Abstract:Tunable Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) has high practical value in optic communications. Piezoelectric copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) can be used as spacer material in FPF to obtain large tunability in wide range because of its great electrostrictive effect. The filter has been fabricated with the structure of DBR/electrode/spacer/electrode/DBR. The copolymer is partly etched at where the light traverses. The transmittance spectra have been studied. The resonant wavelengths have been modulated by applied voltage. The optical length is measured to be 8.04 μm, which shrinks under the electric field. The filter exhibits a total optical path-length change of -0.757% under an electric field of 140 V. The results indicate that the electrostrictive effect plays a major role. © Chin.Phys.Soc.
A Simple Approach to Fiber-Based Tunable Microcavity with High Coupling Efficiency

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:In this paper, a tunable high finesse microfilter is described, which is based on microfiber loop resonator (MLR). The length of microfiber loop could be controlled by a small cylindrical piezoelectric ceramic. As we calculated, this resonator has the maximum Q factor of 2400 and the finesse of 4.3. MLR filter was demonstrated that the maximum extinction ratio is about 10dB, and the free spectral range variation range could be more than 100GHz. This device could also be integrated into a smaller size due to the bigger radius of curvature of the microfiber.

Abstract:The phase shift on reflection from upper and bottom reflectors of the low interference order tunable Fabry–Perot MEMS filter was found playing a crucial role in the determination of resonant wavelength. The simple formula Δλ=2Δ(nd)/k, which was commonly used to describe the tuning process, was demonstrated not to be accurate. By using the transfer matrix method, the analytic expression for phase shift near the central wavelength of dielectric reflector was derived. The new linear relationship between the air gap and resonant wavelength was presented based on the resonant condition. The properties of mirrors that influence the tunable sensitivity were analyzed. Error of the linear relationship in a specified wavelength range was also estimated in this paper. The results are valid for all Fabry–Perot type optical tunable filters.

Abstract:A thin-film Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) was designed and fabricated to achieve the superprism effect. A polychromatic light, tuned at various incident angles onto the device, was used to attain more demultiplexing channels. This indicates that the FPF, which can be fabricated simply and inexpensively, can be used as a tunable demultiplexing device. Further, the transfer matrix method (TMM) and the Gaussian angular spectrum method were introduced to calculate a more-accurate spatial shift at different wavelengths and to analyze the beam-splitting phenomena in the FPF. Abstract:Unlike the conventional Fabry–Perot cavity, the gap length of a MEMS-based FP tunable filter is comparable with the wavelength. The phase shift on reflection from the top and bottom reflectors plays a crucial role in the determination of peak wavelength at low interference order. In this paper, the optical properties of filters with different mirrors including N, N+1/2 layer pairs dielectric mirrors and metal mirrors are analysed. By the transfer matrix method, the analytic expressions for phase shift on reflection near the central wavelength of mirrors are derived and an important parameter, the phase shift coefficient, that describes the phase shift dispersion is defined. Considering the phase shift, linear relations between the air gap and peak wavelength are presented in the tuning process. Finally, the error of the linear relationship in a specified wavelength range is estimated.

Abstract:The tunable optical filter used for WDM system was fabricated by employed the birefringence of liquid crystal. When the driver voltage changed, the refractive index of the liquid crystal was altered, which inverted to change the effective thickness of the cavity of the filter based on the Fabry-Perot etalon, so the peak of the transmittance was shifted and the filter achieved the tunable performance. The experiment result of the device was achieved to the tunable range from 1534.5nm to 1562.5nm and the full width of the half maximum is nearly 0.8nm and was in agreement with the design one.

Abstract:The relation between the air gap thickness and the peak wavelength in micro-optical electromechanical system (MOEMS) optical tunable filter based on Fabry-Perot etalon is discussed. In the devices based on MOEMS, length of the air cavity is about one wavelength, so the phase shift on reflection of the dielectric reflector plays a crucial role in the low interference order. From the phase shift, the linear relation between the air gap thickness and the peak wavelength is presented and then proved by numerical computation. The refractive index of thin films and the number of stacks constructing the reflector that influence the tunable sensitivity are analyzed. At the end, error in a specified wavelength range is estimated.

Abstract:Based on the birefringent effect of liquid crystal, a liquid crystal Fabry-Perot filter in simple structure is designed and fabricated. This device can be used in wavelength division multiplexing. The tunable characteristic of this device is analyzed and simulated. The formula of the relation between the liquid crystal refractive index modulation and the rotary angle of the liquid crystal molecule arose from the modulated voltage is got. The test of the fabricated tunable filter shows that the performance of the device is mainly affected by the alignment of the liquid crystal molecule and the parameter of the reflectors of the Fabry-Perot cavity, and the tunable characteristic is good for this kind of device with the nematic liquid crystal as the media in the Fabry-Perot cavity. The tunable range of the tunable filter covers the C band and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) could reach 0.8 nm, the experimental result was coincident with the design well.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-narrow-band optical filter based on a hybrid-microsphere consisting of a coated SiO2 microsphere. As compared to the SiO2 microsphere, the hybrid-microsphere produces a quality factor of >10(8), a transmission spectrum bandwidth of <1 pm, and an increased side-mode suppression ratio. The microsphere surface roughness and whispering gallery mode (WGM) transmission spectra are measured experimentally. A 0.01 nm bandwidth, single-wavelength fiber laser output is achieved with a tunable wavelength, using the SiO2 microsphere as the mode selector. The optical field distribution and WGM transmission spectrum of the hybrid-microsphere with different coating parameters are theoretically investigated by the finite-difference time-domain method.

Abstract:In order to accomplish tunable filter with broad continuous tuning range,a design of multiple-stage tunable filters utilizing the electrooptic effect of liquid crystal was developed and the device was made.One liquid crystal cell was inserted into the traditional Lyot filter.The tuning could be achieved by using the electro-birefringence effect of liquid crystal.Four tunable liquid crystal filters were assembled with their integral ratio phase retardations.The simulation showed that the tunable range was 450～550 nm and the spectral resolution was 10 nm.A four-stage tunable liquid crystal filter was made and tested.The results indicated the main performance index was in accord with the design requests.The research results can be applied as reference for the study of broad spectrum multiple-stage tunable filters.
Flexible High-Color-Purity Structural Color Filters Based on a Higher-Order Optical Resonance Suppression

Abstract:Abstract We present flexible transmissive structural color filters with high-color-purity based on a higher-order resonance suppression by inserting an ultrathin absorbing layer in the middle of a cavity. A 3rd order Fabry–Pérot (F-P) resonance, which exhibits a narrower bandwidth than a fundamental F-P resonance, is used to produce transmissive colors with an improved color purity. The thin absorbing layer is properly placed at a center of the cavity to highly suppress only a 5th order F-P resonance appearing at a short wavelength range while not affecting the 3rd order F-P resonance for color generation, thus being able to attain the high-color-purity transmissive colors without reducing a transmission efficiency. In addition, angle-insensitive properties are achieved by compensating a net phase shift with a dielectric overlay and using a material with a high refractive index for the cavity medium. Moreover, the transmissive colors on a flexible substrate are demonstrated, presenting that changes in both the resonance wavelength and the transmission efficiency are nearly negligible when the color filters are bent with a bending radius of 5 mm and over 3000 times bending tests. The described approach could pave the way for various applications, such as colored displays, decorative solar panels, and image sensors.

Engineering Waveguide-Cavity Resonant Side Coupling in A Dynamically Tunable Ultracompact Photonic Crystal Filter

Abstract:We employ a plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method in combination with a Bloch-mode scattering model to scrutinize the optical performance of an ultracompact photonic crystal (PC) all-pass optical filter made from a single-mode PC waveguide side coupled with latitudinal optical microcavities. A series of geometrical configurations of resonant microcavities side coupled with the PC waveguide, such as single one-side and two-side, periodically cascaded one-side and two-side arrangement of microcavities, and different quantities of the latitudinal and longitudinal cavity scales, cavity-cavity distance, and cavity-waveguide distance have been systematically investigated. The calculated reflection spectra exhibit a continually splitting feature of resonant frequency when the cavity size is increased. The resonant frequency shifts toward higher frequencies when we reduce the indirect coupling coefficient by increasing the waveguide-cavity distance or by introducing a symmetric two-side structure of microcavities. Optical monomode operation of the reflection pulse can be achieved for appropriate distance between two horizontal microcavities. The resonant peaks gradually evolve into a distinct rectangular shape when we introduce periodically cascaded side-coupled microcavities along the waveguide direction, implying the creation of a forbidden minigap within the guided mode continuum. The optical filter in the two-side configurations has a better filtering performance than in the one-side constructions. The cascaded side-coupled cavity-waveguide structure can act as a high-performance optical delay line.
Narrowband wide dynamic range tunable filter based on Fano resonant planar multilayered structure

Abstract:Tunable narrowband spectral filters with high light throughput and wide dynamic range have remarkable applications such as in optical communications, optical spectroscopy and spectral imaging. However, a cost is usually associated with the filter narrowing either in the dynamic range, in the throughput or the manufacturability. Here we report on a resonating planar multilayered structure that exhibits transparency window in reflection with a controllable full width at half maximum (sub-Angstroms till tens of nm) and tunability over wide spectral range (>500nm in the visible and near infrared). The phenomenon is observed in TE and TM polarizations with much higher contrast in TE. Fano type resonance originating from coupling between waveguide modes and lossy surface electromagnetic waves supported by field distribution calculations explains the phenomenon. The wide tuning range with high contrast is mainly achieved using an absorptive layer with high imaginary to real part ratio of the dielectric constant that enables excitation of lossy surface waves known to exist over a wide spectral band in thin films. To avoid large losses, it is found that the lossy layer should be ultrathin (6nm Cr layer for example). The tuning is achieved by small angular scan of less than 2 degrees or by modulating the refractive index or thickness of the submicron thick waveguide layer from the visible till the near infrared range and in principle it can be designed to operate in any spectral range. Such a thin variable index or thickness layer can allow tuning at ultrahigh speed using conventional electrooptic, magnetooptic, piezoelectric or thermooptic materials at relatively low external fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an electrically controlled tunable narrowband filter based on a thin-film lithium niobate two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. The filter incorporates a photonic crystal microcavity structure within the straight waveguide, enabling electronic tuning of the transmitted wavelength through added electrode structures. The optimized microcavity filter design achieves a balance between high transmission rate and quality factor, with a transmission center wavelength of 1 551.6 nm, peak transmission rate of 96.1%, and quality factor of 5 054. Moreover, the filter can shift the central wavelength of the transmission spectrum by applying voltage to the electrodes, with a tuning sensitivity of 13.8 pm/V. The proposed tunable filter adopts a simple-to-fabricate air-hole structure and boasts a compact size (length: 11.57 μm, width: 5.27 μm, area: 60.97 μm 2 ), making it highly suitable for large-scale integration. These features make the filter promising for broad applications in the fields of photonic integration and optical communication.

Abstract:Through Fano resonance, the resonant modes exhibiting peak-like shapes on the bandpass spectrum of the thin-fiber-taper-coupled conical microresonator are generated. For the first time, this thin-fiber-taper-coupled conical microresonator functions as a Fano filter, and is applied as a tunable internal-cavity bandpass filter for an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser. If the size of the conical microresonator in the coupling junction is adjusted by displacing the fiber taper along the resonator axis, the wavelength of the output laser is able to be tuned linearly and continuously with a coefficient of 0.225 nm/mm.

Abstract:The development of fast, efficient, and cost-effective tunable optical filters is a tireless pursuit of the goal in the field of optical signal processing and communications. However, the traditional filters have been limited by their complex structures, slow tuning speed, and high cost. To address this challenge, we present a tunable ultra-narrow bandpass filter, which is fabricated by a metal layer cladded in a high-parallelism and high-precision piezoelectric ceramic for an interlayer. Experimental results show a remarkable full width at half maximum of 51 pm and a fast response time of 800 ns. In addition, by cascading double filters, the wavelength of the output light has been fine-tuned from a Vernier effect. Moreover, we realize a tunable filter to select and output several ultra-narrow single peaks with 56% efficiency in the 2 nm range. Furthermore, it offers a wide tunable range, exceptional narrowband filtering performance, and fast piezoelectric response times. Hence, it is particularly well suited to applications requiring precise wavelength selection and control, opening new possibilities in the field of tunable optical filters.

Abstract:Liquid Crystal Arrayed Microcavities (LCAM) is a new technology for ultra-narrow optical filtering (FWHM ~ 0.1 nm) that uses pico-liter volume Fabry-Perot type optical cavities filled with liquid crystal for tuning. LCAMs are sub-nm spectral resolution filters, which utilize well-established laser writing, thin film deposition, and wafer manufacturing techniques. These filters are compact, robust, and inexpensive. Compact, high-resolution optical filters have applications including biomedical imaging, chemical detection, and environmental monitoring. Here we describe the LCAM design and initial performance metrics.
