Abstract:The network architecture where each node integrates an IP router and an OXC (optical cross-connect) is an attractive paradigm for the next generation optical Internet. IP wavelength routing or POW (packet over wavelengths) is based on this kind of architecture. The goal of this architecture is to switch as much traffic as possible directly by means of OXCs, because IP forwarding is relatively expensive and causes large end-to-end delay by comparison. Based on analyzing the problems and shortcomings of the previous node structure, a novel node structure is proposed to overcome the problems-encountered by the previous scheme. Then two IP switching protocols, IFMP (Ipsilon Flow Management Protocol) and GSMP (General Switch Management Protocol), are extended to support IP wavelength routing networks. Finally, the performance of an IP wavelength routing network is analyzed with self-similar network traffic model. The simulated results show that the higher the network traffic self-similar degree, the higher switching gain the network gets.
An OBGP-Based Mechanism for Inter-Domain Routing in Optical Networks

Abstract:The authors proposed a novel mechanism based on Optical Border Gateway Protocol (OBGP) that implements inter-domain routing in optical mesh networks.Based on an idea of minimum-hop optimal path and a bypass routing during the request course of lightpath setup phase,they achieved the procedure of dynamic and distribution lightpath establishment efficiently in optical networks,which results in a lower blocking probability than before.They also made resource reservation and configured hardware with a “parallel signaling” mode,which can reduce the end-to-end delay.An experiment of this mechanism using optiman network simulation tools has been presented,which has shown that our study can decrease blocking probability on condition of heavy traffics and make network performance better.It also demonstrates that the three factors,such as network scales,number of wavelengths and traffic loads,have influenced on the network performance.The analysis indicates that a value related to the change of blocking probability approximates the product of end-to-end delay and network scales.

Abstract:With the double growth of Internet traffic every six months, data exceeding voice traffic is only a problem of time, so, the network based on circuit switching will evolve to network based on packet switching unavoidably. But as for optical Internet, because of lacking of optical logical devices and optical buffer, very high bit-rate all-optical packet switching is difficult to realize. On the other hand, the new propose, optical burst switching, is simple compared to optical packet switching, and has better performance, thus, OBS is the prefered we think. We introduce the studying state-of-the-art of optical packet switching and optical burst switching, compare their characteristics and at last, point out the possible directions of OBS.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new access networks concept: wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks. We emphasize the superiority of its architecture and analyze two special technologies adopted by recent WDMPON architecture: optical source sharing and spectral slicing. In the end, we indicate that WDMPON is the best candidate for future broadband network. It will offer important reference for telecommunication carriers to consider the best choice for the future OAN.

Abstract:To have a better network usage in IP (Internet protocol) over WDM (Wavelength division multiplexing) networks, it is important to take into account the combined topology and resource usage information at the IP and optical layers, i.e, for an arriving request, there should be a scheme to determine whether it is better to route it over the existing topology or to open new wavelength paths. Moreover, lightpath length should be considered in many cases especially for different QoS (Quality of service) applications and traffic engineering. To solve these issues, this paper develops an integrated dynamic length-constrained routing algorithm based on transforming-graph. As the proposed routing scheme makes full use of the statistic information of the users' bandwidth requirement and considers carefully both the IP and optical layers' information, thus reduces greatly the bandwidth fragment which can not be used by any other subsequent requests, i.e, an improved network resource usage. Simulation results show that the developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected requests and the network average blocking probability.

Abstract:An inter-domain routing and signaling scheme based on the OBGP protocol for WDM networks with a mesh topology is proposed in the paper. For mesh networks with wavelength conversion, inter-domain routing and signaling are realized by introducing a new message based on an optimal path identifier (OPI) and by establishing the corresponding message-exchange procedures. Considering the wavelength continuity constraint, a strategy called improved destination wavelength assignment (IDWA) combined with the OPI-based message is presented to establish a lightpath dynamically. The scheme is verified on the NSFNET and the CERNET by simulation. Results show that the blocking performance of a non-wavelength-conversion network is even a little lower than that of a wavelength-conversion network.

Abstract:As the survivable mapping is critical in IP-over-wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) network to guarantee the restorability of IP layer, provisioning survivability in network with dynamic traffic is essential. However, survivable mapping problem for dynamic traffic shows more complexity than that for static traffic: 1) How to guarantee a survivable mapping since the lightpath is established and released dynamically; 2) how to make a balance between the cost of maintaining the survivable mapping and network utilization efficiency; 3) what kind of algorithm could be employed as an efficient online algorithm with acceptable computing complexity and scalability. In this paper, two schemes, dynamic routing and logical topology remapping, are proposed to keep a survivable mapping from logical topology to physical topology in dynamic traffic scenario. In addition, two different cutset-searching methods are presented in order to support the proposed online survivable mapping algorithm. At the end, a series of experiments employing regular networks and some special topologies with different connectivity have been carried out in order to evaluate the efficiency and scalability of our approach, in terms of the blocking probability, resource utilization, critical link holding time, and the restoration rate for random single failures. Generally, our results show that this new approach offers great degree of survivability for IP layer, but with acceptable resource cost and complexity.

Abstract:In optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks, traffic can be very “bursty” at a fine time scale, even though it may seem to be smooth at coarser scales (e.g., Poisson or Poisson-related traffic). This paper analyzes the instantaneous characterization of Poisson traffic at a fine time scale. The analysis shows that the irregular oscillation of the instantaneous traffic load and the occurrence of blockings in a light-loaded network are highly correlated. Specifically, most blockings occur concentratively at the peaks of the instantaneous load. In some other time, network resources may not be sufficiently utilized. To make better utilization of network resources, a novel wavelength-buffering (WB) scheme is proposed for the first time in this paper. By reserving a portion of resources in a “wavelength buffer” under light loading and releasing them when the load goes up, a number of blockings brought by the oscillation of the traffic load can be avoided. Simulation results show that compared with other schemes such as adaptive routing, wavelength conversion (WC), and rerouting, the novel wavelength-buffering scheme achieves significantly better performance with respect to the network utilization and overall blocking probability.
What comes after optical-bypass network? A study on optical-computing-enabled network

Abstract:A new architectural paradigm, named, optical-computing-enabled network, is proposed as a potential evolution of the currently used optical-bypass framework. The main idea is to leverage the optical computing capabilities performed on transitional lightpaths at intermediate nodes and such proposal reverses the conventional wisdom in optical-bypass network, that is, separating in-transit lightpaths in avoidance of unwanted interference. In optical-computing-enabled network, the optical nodes are therefore upgraded from conventional functions of add-drop and cross-connect to include optical computing / processing capabilities. This is enabled by exploiting the superposition of in-transit lightpaths for computing purposes to achieve greater capacity efficiency. While traditional network design and planning algorithms have been well-developed for optical-bypass framework in which the routing and resource allocation is dedicated to each optical channel (lightpath), more complicated problems arise in optical-computing-enabled architecture as a consequence of intricate interaction between optical channels and hence resulting into the establishment of the so-called integrated / computed lightpaths. This necessitates for a different framework of network design and planning to maximize the impact of optical computing opportunities. In highlighting this critical point, a detailed case study exploiting the optical aggregation operation to re-design the optical core network is investigated in this paper. Numerical results obtained from extensive simulations on the COST239 network are presented to quantify the efficacy of optical-computing-enabled approach versus the conventional optical-bypass-enabled one.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of global informatization, information has penetrated into every corner of human society. With the popularization of Internet, the transmission bandwidth of information becomes more and more important. Nowadays, people’s demand and dependence on information are becoming stronger and stronger. It is urgent to expand the capacity of wide area backbone communication network, and the optical network composed of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can just take this role. In WDM network, it can transmit multiple optical signals of different wavelengths in one fiber at the same time. WDM has the advantages of large transmission capacity, strong technical adaptability, simple implementation and easy expansion. In addition, WDM optical network can also make full use of the huge bandwidth of optical fiber itself to carry out high-speed transmission. Now, the optical network using WDM technology has become the backbone network of long-distance transmission. This paper studies the optical fiber communication system and analyzes the structure of the optical fiber network. For the optical network, how to find the appropriate routing is a very important technology. After analyzing all kinds of basic routing technologies, this paper proposes a new policy based routing technology, and carries out relevant experiments. The experimental results show that the new routing technology has some advantages compared with the old routing technology.

Abstract:A short-light path preferred establishment mechanism is proposed to solve the virtual topology design problem in IP/WDM networks.The proposed mechanism limits the hop counts of the light path in optical layer to avoid overuse of bandwidth by the long-light path,and establishes more light paths with small hops.Simulation results show that the designed virtual topology with this mechanism effectively reduces network blocking probability and increases the traffic grooming efficiency in a large scale of traffic loads.
