Abstract:This paper presents an effective algorithm against impulsive disturbances which will result in the spectral base rising and cover the spectra of target returns. Since the sea clutter in time domain is always dominant in amplitude and the impulsive disturbances would usually be covered, the general time domain of anti-impulsive-disturbance method can’t be used to eliminate this disturbance. This paper adopts adaptive regression (AR) model estimation to cancel the sea clutter in the range spectrum domain. The remainder is basically the weaker background noise and target echoes and the signal detection becomes possible, especially for weaker targets.

Abstract:Oblique projection polarization filter (OPPF) can be applied as an effective approach for interference cancellation in high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) and other systems. In order to suppress the nonstationary ionosphere clutter further, a novel OPPF based clutter suppressing scheme is proposed in this paper. The polarization and nonstationary characteristic of the clutter are taken into account in the algorithms referred to as range-Doppler domain polarization suppression (RDDPS) and the range-time domain polarization suppression (RTDPS) method, respectively. The RDDPS is designed for weak ionosphere clutter and implemented in the range-Doppler domain directly, whereas the RTDPS algorithm is designed to suppress the powerful ionosphere clutter with a multisegment estimation and suppression scheme. About 15–23 dB signal to interference ratio (SIR) improvement can be excepted when using the proposed method, whereas the targets can be more easily detected in the range-Doppler map. Experimental results demonstrate that the scheme proposed is effective for nonstationary ionosphere clutter and is proven to be a practical interference cancellation technique for HFSWR.

Abstract:To suppress the radio disturbance of high frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR), a method of polarization signal processing is proposed, which integrates polarization-vector translation (LPVT), nonlinear polarization-vector translation (NLPVT) and multinotch logic-product polarization (MLP) filtering together. Through reducing the area of spread of disturbance in polarization space, the indefiniteness of the disturbance scattering center decreases, and the filter performance is improved effectively. Then, to achieve the real time signal processing, an improved MLP algorithm is put forward to resolve the inconsistency between processing speed and notches number. Combined with the experimental data of radio disturbance of the HFSWR, an example of simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach. It is indicated from the experimental data processing that the signal to interference ratio (SIR) can be improved over 2 dB.

Abstract:Sky-wave disturbances are the main interference to HF ground wave radar. Though frequency agility is used to evade the interference, it is not effective when radio disturbances are too much congested. When the incident disturbance and the backscattering radar signal have same incoming direction, space-filtering technique is not effective too. Polarization technique can be used to solve these problems. But the studies of polarization filter in HF ground wave radar are only limited to the field of single disturbance suppression up to now. In order to expand radar?s working frequency band, multidisturbance suppressing is studied with a new polarization 131ter called frequency spectrum polarization filter, which is based on a new polarization extracting technique. With this techque, the polarizations of different disturbances with their frequency bands not overlapping can be extracted simultaneously in frequency band and all the disturbances can be effectively suppressed regardless of the polarization degree of their mixed signal. This gets rid of the restriction that common polarization filter can only cope with single disturbance with high polarization degree. Effectiveness of the algorithm has been proved by theory and simulation experiment.

Abstract:Radio interference suppressing is a main problem to be solved in high frequency (HF) radar system. To effectively cancel the interference, the parameters of the polarization filter should timely adapt to the variation of the polarization of the interference, which may impact the amplitude and phase of the desired signal passing through the same polarization filter during the coherent integration time (CIT) and render the enhancement of the signal integration a failure. To avoid this, a null phase-shift polarization (NPSP) filter is proposed in recent years. Based on the principle of the NPSP filter, a simplified NPSP is proposed in this paper. The interference can be suppressed completely while the target signal remains without distortion. Some applications of HF radars for suppressing the radio interference are introduced. Simulation results from the experimentally derived data indicate that the proposed NPSP filter is effective in HF radar or other coherent systems.

Abstract:A method of suppressing HF sky-wave interference in ground wave OTH radar is put forward, in which three dimension orthogonally polarized receiving antennas are utilized. The new technique can suppress the sky-wave interference which can't be handled in two dimension orthogonal polarization filter. In order to further improve the interference suppression ability, an optimum weighting method is given. It is proved in theory that the weighting method can effectively decrease polarization loss, increase output SINR and enlarge interference suppression area in polarization domain and space domain.

Abstract:High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) is able to receive surface target and low-flying aircraft echoes at a long-distance, but it suffers severely from ionospheric clutter. In this paper, a spacepolarization collaborative-based filter is introduced to mitigate ionospheric clutter. For parameter estimation on ionospheric clutter used for filters, a spatial parameter estimation algorithm based on compressive sensing is introduced to the DOA estimation of ionospheric clutter. In addition, a polarized parameter estimation algorithm based on statistical characteristics is proposed for ionospheric clutter in the range-Doppler spectrum. Higher estimation accuracy is achieved as a result of the range-Doppler spectrum; therefore, these two estimation algorithms enhance the performance of the space-polarization collaborative suppression method for ionospheric clutter. Experimental results of practical dual-polarized HFSWR data show the effectiveness of the two algorithms and the above mentioned filter for ionospheric clutter suppression.

Abstract:A novel polarization filtering method based on the oblique projection operator is proposed to improve the target detection performance for High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) system in this paper. The performance of the proposed oblique projection polarization filter (OPPF) is detailedly analyzed in presence of additive Gaussian white noise and the desired signal's Mean Square Error (MSE) with the estimation error of the interference polarization parameter is discussed in detail. Some applications of high-frequency (HF) radars for suppressing the radio interference are introduced. Simulation results from the experimentally derived data indicate that the improvement of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) can be expected to be more than 28 dB. The proposed NPSP filter is effective in HF radar or other coherent systems.

Abstract:Polarisation filtering is a valid approach for interference suppression in high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) and other systems. Based on the fundamental principle of the oblique projection and polarised filtering, an oblique projection polarisation filter (OPPF), which can be constructed from the polarisation subspaces of the target signal and those of the interference or directly from experimental data, is proposed in this study. Generalised methods for constructing the OPPF operators (theoretical OPPF and improved OPPF) are provided and the impact on the performance caused by the estimation errors is also discussed. Numerical results from simulation and experimental data demonstrate that the proposed filter is an effective means of interference cancellation. It is proved that OPPF is an extension of the conventional polarised filter, whereas the improved OPPF is more suitable for the situation where the interference is unknown.

Abstract:The performance of the high frequency（HF）radar system, which works on the shortwave band（2-15 MHz）, degrades heavily in an intensive radio interference environment. To suppress the interferenee effectively, polarization filtering can be utilized and the accurate estimation of the polarization status of signal and in- terference becomes a critical element for improving the capability of polarization fil- tering. Based on fractional Fourier transform（FrFT）,a novel method,in which the polarized states of the interference are estimated in the FrFT domain based on the inflexibility feature of the signals in Fractional domain and temporal domain, is in- troduced in this paper. The simulation of the experimental data indicates that the polarized states of the target and the radio interference can be estimated exactly and the requirement of polarization filtering can be met in the HF radar system.

Abstract:In order to reject the spatial radio frequency interference (RFI) in the complex electromagnetism circumstance of high frequency (HF) radar, the time-varying adaptive beamforming is needed. Due to the time-varying beamforming coefficient breaks the correlation of target and sea-clutter in the whole coherent process interval (CPI), the Bragg peaks will spread after the Doppler processing. To maintain the sea-clutter response between the contiguity sub-CPIs consistent range bins, a new interference suppression method was proposed in this paper. Simulation and experimental data processing results show that the new method may greatly improve the performance of RFI suppression in HF radar.

Abstract:Traditional methods of signal analysis and processing are not suitable for analyzing nonstationary signals.Hilbert-Huang transform(HHT) rising in recent years is an adaptive and efficient means for non-linear and non-stationary signal processing.It is used for the suppression of radar clutter over the limitation of the traditional time-frequency analysis.HHT is able to resolve time-frequency characteristics of signals and highlight the flexible components of targets.Simulation results show that EMD combined with threshold denoising and scale filtering methods here is effective to remove clutters from the radar echo.
An Effective Scheme for Radio Frequency Interference Suppression in High-Frequency Radar

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of radio frequency interference (RFI) in high-frequency (HF) radar. An efficient scheme is proposed for RFI suppression by designing receive filter in fast time domain for pulse compression. Throughout the implementation in observation data, this scheme does not need any training data. Instead, it uses the temporal data which is recovered after sea-clutter mitigation from observation data. As we know, sea-clutter is hard to eliminate completely. Residual clutter would contaminate the RFI covariance estimate and greatly degrade the performance of whitening filter. Considering the robustness to residual clutter, in this paper, filter design employs the similarity constraint which restricts the sought-after filter to be similar to the transmit signal. Under the criteria of maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), the constrained optimal filter is analyzed, given in closed-form. Experimental results demonstrate that the scheme works efficiently in the presence of residual clutter and reveals the target which is submerged by RFI in conventional processing.
Suppressing Coupling and Stationary Clutters in FMCW Radars with Temporal Filtering

Abstract:In this paper, a novel signal processing technique based on temporal filtering is proposed to alleviate the coupling between the transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX) channels in frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radars. It works by subtracting the target beat signal with the reference beat signal in the absence of the target being detected. Moreover, the proposed temporal filtering technique is also promising to eliminate static clutters. A spectrum-based alignment algorithm was developed to align the target beat signal with the reference signal. The working principle and theory were introduced in details. The gesture sensing experiments are carried out to validate the proposed technique. The experimental results show that the TX-RX coupling was suppressed by about 20 dB. With the proposed technique, the ranging accuracy is also significantly improved by suppressing the mean square error (MSE) by 12.5 dB.

Abstract:The classical adaptive methods of clutter suppression for airborne radar are mainly based on the time domain processing. A new suppression method based on the frequency domain, which is named FFT processing method in frequency domain (FPMFD), is presented in this paper. This method makes input data be transformed to the frequency domain through the FFT operation. Then, the center Doppler frequency and bandwidth of clutter spectrum are estimated by using the mass center method. These outputs of FFT channels, which are in the clutter domain, will be set zeros, namely filtering clutter. The simulation results demonstrate that the FPMFD has more excellent improvement factor and smaller signal-to-noise ratio loss than the classical adaptive MTI based on the spectral estimation. Sequentially, the FPMFD is beneficial for the detection of slow speed targets. Its other advantages are effective prevention of target whitening and simple computation process. As a result, the FPMFD is easy to be implemented by hardware.

Abstract:High-frequency mixed mode surface wave radar is a new kind of over-the-horizon radar system and is capable of early warning and marine exclusive economic zone monitoring. Due to combination of the ionospheric channel and the sea surface, the inhomogeneous background makes the clutter statistics change rapidly in even adjacent range cells. This sample starved scenario degrades the clutter suppression performance for conventional adaptive filter methods which utilize the training data from neighboring range cells. In this paper, a novel single data set side-lobe cancellation method is proposed to overcome this challenge. Firstly, the non-stationary property of the first-order sea clutter using measured data is analyzed. Then, the clutter suppression algorithm, which is called SDS-SLC, is presented. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified by the experimental data and the comparison result shows it outperforms other traditional methods.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the characteristics of ionospheric clutter, which has proven to be the greatest impediment in high frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR). Ionospheric clutter influences most range bins, all Doppler bins and beams. A novel ionospheric clutter mitigation algorithm for high frequency surface wave radar is introduced. The past CPI data was used firstly to form the auxiliary channel to cancel the directly reflect component of ionospheric clutter, adaptive beamforming was used to suppress the mix path component of ionospheric clutter secondly. A synthesis of the two cancellation process was carried on by knowledge-aided pre-whiten method. Experimental results of experimental high frequency surface wave radar show that the proposed method i is very effective and flexible.

Abstract:High frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) has been successfully developed for early warning, especially for vessel target detection. However, the system's performance is consistently constrained by external environmental noise, particularly directional noise, which presents a new problem for HFSWR. Anisotropic directional noise has complex behavior, and its noise level is generally increased by 10 to 15 dB compared to traditional noise floor level. Suppressing varying directional noise and exploring obscured targets are challenging tasks for HFSWR. In this paper, a novel algorithm based on angle-Doppler joint multi-eigenvector synthesis, which considers the angle-Doppler map of radar echoes, is adopted to analyze the characteristics of the directional noise. Given the measured data set, we first analyze the directional noise-spatial correlation. Then, an algorithm based on sliding main lobe cancellation (SL-MLC) based on a sliding single-notch space filter (SSNSF) is proposed to block target components and get training data that contains precise directional noise information. Finally, the method is examined by measured data, and the results indicate the method has better performance for directional noise than the compared method.
