Abstract:Since 2000, many digital watermarking schemes for vector quantization (VQ)-compressed images have been proposed. Their main idea is to carry watermark information by VQ codeword indices. The advantage of this kind of watermarking schemes is its robustness to VQ compression with the same codebook. This Letter presents a more effective image watermarking method based on classified VQ. First, the input image is segmented into blocks and a classifier is used to classify each block. Then, each block is encoded by the classified VQ codebook according to its class and the two watermark bits corresponding codebook. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is a blind watermarking method which outperforms existing VQ-based watermarking methods, and the watermarked image is robust to most of common signal processing operations.

Abstract:A new vector quantization menthod in the wavelet transform domain is proposed.First,wavelet transform decomposes the original image,then the coefficients of the three directions are used to construct the band-cross vector,and then the vectors are classified.In addition,new vector quantization technologies are used in this algorithm.Simulation shows that this method can be realized easily and compress the wavelet image efficiently under lower coding rate.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high-efficiency low bit-rate image compression algorithm that is based on weighted classified vector quantization (WCVQ) of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) coefficients. The algorithm first does multi-level wavelet decomposition to the original image, and then constructs band-cross vectors along resolution-level-cross high frequency sub-bands respectively in the horizontal, vertical and diagonal three directions that makes the most of the correlation of DWT coefficients among those sub-bands, and then classifies these band-cross vectors into important clustering and unimportant clustering by zero-tree vector and vector energy, and last merges several adjacent unimportant vectors into an unimportant vector block and codes them uniformly, while, applies weighted vector quantization consistent with HVS to the important vectors by progressive constructive clustering (PCC) algorithm that improves the coding efficiency and the reconstructed image quality.

Abstract:New algorithm of classified vector quantization based on wavelet transform for image coding is presented. According to the similarity in the same orientation but different levels of the discrete wavelet transform domain, this paper proposes a new algorithm of multiresolutional classified vector quantization. This algorithm exploits an efficient classifier to classify the vectors and uses the class information of the higher lever to instruct the vector classification of the lower lever by taking advantaging of the similarity. Simulation results show that this algorithm can get the higher image compression ratio and pleasant quality of the reconstructed image in comparison with others.

Abstract:Vector quantisation (VQ) shows a good performance for image coding with high-compression ratios. However, there are many difficulties for image coding with VQ, especially the edge degradation and high-computational complexity. To resolve these two problems, the authors propose a new coding method based on edge orientation patterns (EOPs) by classifying image blocks into nine classes according to their edge orientations. For colour image coding, 27 codebooks (nine for each colour component) are pre-designed based on a series training images. In the encoding stage, an input colour image is decomposed into Y, Cb, and Cr components, and each component image is divided into non-overlapping 4 x 4 blocks. For each block, eight edge orientation templates of size 4 x 4 are performed to determine its edge orientation. According to the edge orientation, each block is compressed by using the corresponding codebook. Essentially, the authors' scheme is a kind of classified VC (CVQ). Simulation results show that, their EOP-based CVQ can largely improve the compression efficiency as well as speeding up the encoding process and it is sufficient to establish effectiveness of the authors' algorithm as compared with the existing techniques.

Abstract:With the development of medical device, high quality medical image is widely used. Image compression makes it convenient for image storage and transmission. Based on classified vector quantization, an improved vector quantization compression method using structural similarity index and genetic algorithm is proposed. The proposed method is tested using public database and comparison study shows that it is efficient for medical image compression.

Three inequalities based on the characteristics of sums and variances of a vector and its two sub-vectors are introduced to reject a larger number of codewords. Abstract:Digital watermarking has been presented as a new method for copyright protection. It is a technique to insert imperceptible (and hard to remove) data into digital image, audio or video, so that it allows ownership to be established or a buyer to be identified. The common digital image watermarking techniques are spatial or transform-based, which are based on spread-spectrum communications. Most of transform-domain watermarking methods are based on Discrete Cosine Transforms (DCT) and robust to JPEG lossy compression. Recently, digital image watermarking based on another significant lossy compression technique, Vector Quantization (VQ), has been presented, which carries watermark information by codeword indices. It is quite effective, especially for the robustness to VQ compression with the same codebook. This paper presents a more favorable image watermarking method based on classified VQ. This technique can achieve excellent embedding performance and extract the watermark without the original image. Experimental results show that the proposed techniques are superior to some existing VQ-based watermarking algorithms, and the watermarked image is robust to some common signal processing operations.

Abstract:A novel semi-fragile digital image watermarking method is presented, based on index constrained vector quantisation, which embeds the watermark information into the compressed bit streams. Simulation results show that the proposed method is robust to JPEG compression and VQ compression with high-performance codebooks but fragile to other image processing operations.

Abstract:The classified side-match vector quantizer, CSMVQ, has already been presented for low-bit-rate image encoding. It exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of the upper and left codewords. However, this block classifier doesn't take the variance of the current input vector itself into account. This letter presents a new CSMVQ in which a two-level block classifier is used to classify input vectors and two different master codebooks are used for generating the state codebook according to the variance of the input vector. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed CSMVQ.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an attractive image compression technique. VQ utilizes the high correlations between neighboring pixels in a block, but disregards the high correlations between the adjacent blocks. Unlike VQ, Side match VQ (SMVQ) exploits codeword information of two encoded adjacent blocks, the upper and left blocks, to encode the current input vector. However, SMVQ doesn’t consider edge characteristics of the current input vector and its neighboring vectors at all. Variable-rate SMVQ has been proposed in the literature that exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of the upper and left codewords. However, this block classifier didn’t take the variance of the current input vector itself into account. Based on this, variable-rate SMVQ with a new block classifier called new CSMVQ is proposed. This classifier uses the variance of the input vector together with variances of its neighboring encoded blocks to encode the input vector. Experimental results show that new CSMVQ can obtain lower bit rate than VQ and old CSMVQ. Moreover, new CSMVQ can obtain higher image quality than SMVQ, old CSMVQ and VQ. In addition, new CSMVQ needs shorter encoding time than old CSMVQ.

Abstract:An efficient hybrid image vector quantization (VQ) technique based on a classification in the DCT domain is presented in this letter. This algorithm combines two kinds of VQ, predictive VQ (PVQ) and discrete cosine transform domain VQ (DCTVQ), and adopts a simple classifier which employs only three DCT coefficients in the 8 × 8 block. For each image block, the classifier switches to the PVQ coder if the block is relatively complex, and otherwise switches to the DCTVQ coder. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve higher PSNR values than ordinary VQ, PVQ, JPEG, and JPEG2000 at the same bit-rate.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an attractive image compression technique. However, SMVQ is a fixed bit rate compression technique and doesn't make full use of the edge characteristics to predict the input vector. Classified side-match vector quantization (CSMVQ) is an effective image compression technique with low bit rate and relatively high reconstruction quality. It exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of neighboring blocks' codewords. As an alternative, this paper proposes three algorithms using gradient values of neighboring blocks' codewords to predict the input block. The first one employs a basic gradient-based classifier that is similar to CSMVQ. To achieve lower bit rates, the second one exploits a refined two-level classifier structure. To reduce the encoding time further, the last one employs a more efficient classifier, in which adaptive class codebooks are defined within a gradient-ordered master codebook according to various prediction results. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
Image Retrieval Using VQ Index Histograms in Classified DCT Domain.

Abstract:An image retrieval scheme, called Classified DCT based Vector Quantisation Index Histogram (CDCT-VQIH) is proposed to extract features from the DCT frequency domain. Our algorithm takes advantage of both the energy-compaction property of DCT and the high compression ratio of classified vector quantization (CVQ). The input colour image is decomposed into Y, Cb, and Cr components, and each component image is divided into non-overlapping 8 × 8 blocks. Then we transform the image blocks from the spatial domain to the DCT domain. As a result, we can get a transformed vector consisting of DC and AC coefficients. After that, we perform CVQ on the AC coefficients in each block to classify all the 8×8 blocks into four categories. Our CDCT-VQIH based feature combine the class index, the DC index and the VQ index together, which represent the edge classification information, energy information and texture information of an image respectively. The retrieval simulation results show that, compared with the traditional spatial-domain colour-histogram (SCH) based feature and the existing DCTVQIH based feature, our feature performs much better in terms of recall and precision.

Each 8×8 image block is quantized with ordinary VQ (OVQ) or transformed VQ (TVQ), which is determined by the three low-frequency DCT coefficients. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can achieve promising performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a new image indexing and retrieval algorithm for large image databases based on the wavelets decomposition and vector quantization (VQ). The algorithm characterizes the color variations over the spatial extend of the image in a manner that provides semantically-meaningful image comparisons. To speed up retrieval, a two-step procedure is used that first makes a rough comparison based on the coarse features, and then refine the search by performing a fine feature vectors match between the selected images and the query. By adopting these wavelets VQ coding features, images can be compressed and indexed simultaneously, thus decreasing the complexity of database management. For the feasibility and practicality of the approach, a prototype system has been developed and tested with some experiments. Promising results have been obtained in experiments using a database of 15,000 general purposed images.

Abstract:An optimized medical image compression algorithm based on wavelet transform and improved vector quantization is introduced. The goal of the proposed method is to maintain the diagnostic-related information of the medical image at a high compression ratio. Wavelet transformation was first applied to the image. For the lowest-frequency subband of wavelet coefficients, a lossless compression method was exploited; for each of the high-frequency subbands, an optimized vector quantization with variable block size was implemented. In the novel vector quantization method, local fractal dimension (LFD) was used to analyze the local complexity of each wavelet coefficients, subband. Then an optimal quadtree method was employed to partition each wavelet coefficients, subband into several sizes of subblocks. After that, a modifiedK-means approach which is based on energy function was used in the codebook training phase. At last, vector quantization coding was implemented in different types of sub-blocks. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, JPEG, JPEG2000, and fractal coding approach were chosen as contrast algorithms. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the compression performance and can achieve a balance between the compression ratio and the image visual quality.

Abstract:The solving question of image compressing is how to reduce the image data to a minimum. The rebuilt image using the data is satisfying. The characteristics of the infrared image are analyzed. After the analysis of infrared image wavelet coefficients, a vector quantization algorithm based on wavelet transform and the advanced one are proposed. The two algorithms are both realized by programming, and the results of the experiments are analyzed and compared, which shows that the proposed algorithms for infrared image compression can be feasible.
