Abstract:In this paper, a new and fast encoding algorithm for vector quantization is presented. This algorithm makes full use of two characteristics of a vector: the sum and the variance. A vector is separated into two subvectors: one is composed of the first half of vector components and the other consists of the remaining vector components. Three inequalities based on the sums and variances of a vector and its two subvectors components are introduced to reject those codewords that are impossible to be the nearest codeword, thereby saving a great deal of computational time, while introducing no extra distortion compared to the conventional full search algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is faster than the equal-average nearest neighbor search (ENNS), the improved ENNS, the equal-average equal-variance nearest neighbor search (EENNS) and the improved EENNS algorithms. Comparing with the improved EENNS algorithm, the proposed algorithm reduces the computational time and the number of distortion calculations by 2.4% to 6% and 20.5% to 26.8%, respectively. The average improvements of the computational time and the number of distortion calculations are 4% and 24.6% for the codebook sizes of 128 to 1024, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, a fast VQ encoding algorithm using an efficient kick-out condition has been presented. In that algorithm, codewords are sorted in ascending order of their norms and a kick-out condition based on a new distortion measure is used to reject unlikely codewords. However, it cannot be combined with partial distance search (PDS) technology. In this paper, two fast norm-ordered codeword search algorithms are presented. One is spatial-domain based, the other is Hadamard transform-domain based. Both of them can be combined with PDS technology without increasing any additional memory requirement and any degradation in quality. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:A fast nearest neighbor codeword search algorithm for vector quantization (VQ) is introduced. The algorithm uses three significant features of a vector, that is, the mean, the variance and the norm, to reduce the search space. It saves a great deal of computational time while introducing no more memory units than the equal-average equal-variance codeword search algorithm. With two extra elimination criteria based on the mean and the variance, the proposed algorithm is also more efficient than so-called norm-ordered search algorithm. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an attractive image compression technique. VQ utilizes the high correlations between neighboring pixels in a block, but disregards the high correlations between the adjacent blocks. Unlike VQ, Side match VQ (SMVQ) exploits codeword information of two encoded adjacent blocks, the upper and left blocks, to encode the current input vector. However, SMVQ doesn’t consider edge characteristics of the current input vector and its neighboring vectors at all. Variable-rate SMVQ has been proposed in the literature that exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of the upper and left codewords. However, this block classifier didn’t take the variance of the current input vector itself into account. Based on this, variable-rate SMVQ with a new block classifier called new CSMVQ is proposed. This classifier uses the variance of the input vector together with variances of its neighboring encoded blocks to encode the input vector. Experimental results show that new CSMVQ can obtain lower bit rate than VQ and old CSMVQ. Moreover, new CSMVQ can obtain higher image quality than SMVQ, old CSMVQ and VQ. In addition, new CSMVQ needs shorter encoding time than old CSMVQ.

Abstract:This paper summarizes various fast nearest-neighbor codeword search algorithms for vector quantization. These algorithms are classified into several classes according to their characteristics. Simulation, comparisons and analysis are done for various fast algorithms in terms of encoding time, average calculations, extra memory and off-line computation. Some modified algorithms or trains of thoughts are also presented.

Abstract:A novel fast encoding algorithm was presented for vector quantization, in which, four characteristic values are computed for each codeword before encoding, then four ordered codebooks are obtained according to the ascending order of four characteristic values respectively. During the encoding process the adaptive searching range and sequence are obtained for each input vector in order to reject a lot of unmatched codewords. The test result shows that this algorithm enables us to search merely 3% to 8% of the codewords to encode an input vector while preserving its coding performance very close to that of the full search method; the encoding time is reduced by about 93% as compared with full search method.
A Fast Image Coding Algorithm Using Variable-Rate Mean-Match Correlation Vector Quantization

Abstract:A variable-rate mean-match correlation vector quantizer, MMCVQ, is presented as an alternative vector quantizer of side-match vector quantizer (SMVQ) for fast image encoding. Before encoding, the mean values of all codewords are computed, then a sorted codebook is obtained according to the ascending order of the mean values of codewords. During the encoding stage, high correlation of the adjacent image blocks and mean values of the current processing vector and codewords are considered to obtain the state-codebook of the current processing vector. The experimental result shows: (1) the encoding time of MMCVQ is almost 7 times faster than that of full-search VQ and almost 42 times faster than that of SMVQ, and (2) compared with SMVQ, the encoding quality will increase more than 1 dB in PSNR, and (3) the bit rate of MMCVQ is smaller than that of SMVQ by 0.03-0.05 b/pixel

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an attractive image compression technique. Unlike VQ side-match VQ (SMVQ) exploits codeword information of two encoded adjacent blocks, the upper and left blocks, to encode the current input vector. However, SMVQ is a fixed bit rate compression technique and doesn't make full use of the edge characteristics to predict the input vector. Classified side-match vector quantization (CSMVQ) is an effective image compression technique with low bit rate and relatively high reconstruction quality. It exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of neighboring blocks' codewords. As an alternative, this paper proposes three algorithms using gradient values of neighboring blocks' codewords to predict the input block. The first one employs a basic gradient-based classifier that is similar to CSMVQ. To achieve lower bit rates, the second one exploits a refined two-level classifier structure. To reduce the encoding time further, the last one employs a more efficient classifier, in which adaptive class codebooks are defined within a gradient-ordered master codebook according to various prediction results. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:A fast search algorithm was developed to reduce the computing load for vector quantization. The algorithm uses a general codeword rejection theorembased on the nearest-neighbor search algorithm and vector division. The theoremuses the means and variances of sub-vectors to form an inequality to reject unlikely codewords. The fast search algorithm is designed when the number of subvectors has been reduced to two. The experimental results show that the computing time for the new algorithm is 80% that of the improved equal-average equal-variance nearest-neighbor search (IEENNS) algorithm. The new algorithm has higher performance than other fast algorithms based on the results of inequalities and can be used in speech and image coding.

Abstract:This Letter presents a fast codeword search algorithm based on ordered Hadamard transform. Before encoding, the ordered Hadamard transform is performed offline on all codewords. During the encoding process, the ordered Hadamard transform is first performed on the input vector, and then a new inequality based on characteristic values of transformed vectors is used to reject the unlikely transformed codewords. Experimental results show that the algorithm outperforms many newly presented algorithms in the case of high dimensionality, especially for high-detail images.

Abstract:In this paper, a new sub-region search algorithm is proposed for fast encoding of image vector quantization, in the proposed scheme, we will only search a portion of the codebook to locate the best match vector of each input vector according to the state of its neighboring blocks. A block transition criterion is developed for selecting the subset of codebook for searching. Simulation results show that the encoding time required by the proposed algorithm is just about 10-20% of that required by the full search with almost the same output image quality.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is a very effective way to save bandwidth and storage for speech coding and image coding. Traditional vector quantization methods can be divided into mainly seven types, tree-structured VQ, direct sum VQ, Cartesian product VQ, lattice VQ, classified VQ, feedback VQ, and fuzzy VQ, according to their codebook generation procedures. Over the past decade, quantization-based approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search has been developing very fast and many methods have emerged for searching images with binary codes in the memory for large-scale datasets. Their most impressive characteristics are the use of multiple codebooks. This leads to the appearance of two kinds of codebook: the linear combination codebook and the joint codebook. This may be a trend for the future. However, these methods are just finding a balance among speed, accuracy, and memory consumption for ANN search, and sometimes one of these three suffers. So, finding a vector quantization method that can strike a balance between speed and accuracy and consume moderately sized memory, is still a problem requiring study.

Abstract:Several neighboring pixels based prediction schemes were proposed by exploiting the statistical relationship between pixel distance and correlation.And an edge adaptive predictive VQ scheme was proposed for images containing distinct edge characteristics.Simulations demonstrate the improved predicting accuracy and coding performance of the proposed predictive VQ algorithms for image coding applications constrained at a low computational complexity level.

Abstract:Vector Quantization (VQ) is one of effective image compression techniques. High compression quality depends on designing a good VQ codebook. Based on two optimality conditions, the conventional K-means algorithm is a widely used scheme to generate a codebook. However, the initial codebook greatly affects both the convergence speed and the quality of the generated codebook. Therefore, many researchers have presented all kinds of methods to obtain a good initial codebook, including splitting-based, pruning-based, pairwise nearest neighbor-based, random initialization-based and maximum distance initialization-based schemes. However, all these techniques do not take into account the features of the training vectors and some of them need high extra computational load. This paper presents a simple classification based technique to obtain a better initial codebook. During the initial codebook generation process, we classify the training vectors according to their edge orientations (eight templates) and their contrast information (binary decision), and thus we can obtain sixteen subsets. Then we just randomly select several codewords from each subset proportionally to the number of training vectors in the subset. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared with the conventional and modified K-means algorithms under the random initialization strategy, our scheme converges to a better codebook with fewer iterations.

Abstract:The encoding process of vector quantization (VQ) is a time bottleneck to its practical application. In order to speed up the process of VQ encoding, it is possible to estimate the Euclidean distance first with just a lighter computation to try to reject a candidate codeword. In order to estimate the Euclidean distance, appropriate features of a vector become necessary. By using the famous statistical features of the sum and variance for a k-dimensional vector and furthermore for its two corresponding (k/2)-dimensional subvectors, it is easy to estimate the Euclidean distance so as to reject most of the unlikely codewords for a certain input vector (Guan, L and Kamel, M., 1992; Lec, C.H. and Chen, L H., 1994; Baek, S. et al., 1997; Pan, J.S. et al., 2003). Because it is very heavy to compute the variance of a k-dimensional vector online, a new feature, which is based on the variances of two subvectors, is constructed to estimate the Euclidean distance. Meanwhile, a modified more memory-efficient data structure is proposed for storing all features of a vector to reduce extra memory requirement compared to the latest previous work (Pan, J.S. et al., 2003). Experimental results confirmed that the proposed method is more search efficient.

Abstract:An efficient hybrid image vector quantization (VQ) technique based on a classification in the DCT domain is presented in this letter. This algorithm combines two kinds of VQ, predictive VQ (PVQ) and discrete cosine transform domain VQ (DCTVQ), and adopts a simple classifier which employs only three DCT coefficients in the 8 × 8 block. For each image block, the classifier switches to the PVQ coder if the block is relatively complex, and otherwise switches to the DCTVQ coder. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve higher PSNR values than ordinary VQ, PVQ, JPEG, and JPEG2000 at the same bit-rate.
