Abstract:Combining the flexibility and ease of use of paper and pencil with the processing power of the computer, computer aided sketching design(CASD) technology specially suits for conceptual design and can help designer write down design ideas rapidly. For many years it has been one of the key issues on which many specialists and scholars have research. Based on application domains of sketching technology, the present situation of CASD is introduced. From four aspects of CASD, that is user interface design, low level sketch process, high level sketch interpretation, 3D sketching modeling, research method of some key technologies of CASD are analyzed. The development tendency of CASD is predicted.

Abstract:The development of technologies such as big data and cyber-physical systems (CPSs) has increased the demand for product design. Product digital design involves completing the product design process using advanced digital technologies such as geometry modeling, kinematic and dynamic simulation, multi-disciplinary coupling, virtual assembly, virtual reality (VR), multi-objective optimization (MOO), and human-computer interaction. The key technologies of intelligent design for customized products include: a description and analysis of customer requirements (CRs), product family design (PFD) for the customer base, configuration and modular design for customized products, variant design for customized products, and a knowledge push for product intelligent design. The development trends in intelligent design for customized products include big-data-driven intelligent design technology for customized products and customized design tools and applications. The proposed method is verified by the design of precision computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools.

Abstract:Customized product development is facing the challenges of maintaining mass producibility and exploring customer perception on target products. The objective of this study was the application of ergonomic evaluation method for customized furniture design in virtual environment. At the first, the system architecture was built, and gordian techniques of the system were analyzed. Then a representative case was studied. In this case study, 3D scanning system and Motion Capture were used to get information of given user/users, REBA and Lifting Index (LI) of revised NIOSH lifting equation were selected as ergonomics evaluation methods. The prototype's usability was verified by the result. This method can also be used to solve other relative problems.

Abstract:The architecture of ergonomics simulation and evaluation for the automobile was described. Ergonomics analysis and evaluation is one of the most important processes in product design at present. This ergonomics simulation system based on the elements of ergonomics analysis and evaluation can provide an excellent solution to take human element into account earlier in the design phase and make proactive choices in automobile design than those traditional methods. Thinking of the characteristics of the automobile industry, this system adopted the anatomy-based and parameterized human model for Chinese, the simulation technique using motion editing and the mathematical models of ergonomics to solve real ergonomic design problems in the design phases.

Abstract:The virtual product development is the unified process of product design, evaluation and validation. Ergonomics analysis is the important step for product validation in the process, and the virtual human is key to the computer-aided product ergonomics. In this paper, ergonomics simulation system is studied based on some elements of ergonomics analysis and assessment. An ergonomics virtual human is built, which is a unified framework made up of biomechanics/physiology-based model, anthropometrical model, posture and motion model, task model, human reactions and decision-making model and human factor analysis model. The framework is applied to virtual prototyping and virtual product development.

Abstract:Background: Virtual reality (VR) is a combination of technologies that allow the user to interact with a computer-simulated environment with the experience of immersion, interactivity, and imagination. However, ergonomic problems related to virtual reality have adverse effects on the health and experience of users, which restrict the application of virtual reality technology. Objective: The paper aims to provide an overview of the ergonomics evaluation of VR for further development of software and hardware of VR. Methods: This paper describes and discusses the ergonomics issues involved in the software and hardware of VR from three aspects: visual, physiological, and cognitive. The paper also summarizes the research methods and evaluation metrics. Results: Many attempts have been made to study ergonomics issues of VR, mainly including pressure, muscle fatigue, thermal comfort, visual fatigue, and motion sickness. Ergonomics studies are very valuable for research related to virtual reality. There is a summary table that lists the main evaluation metrics and methods. Conclusions: According to current research, this review gives three recommendations for further research on VR, which will be helpful for further human-centered research and design work within the VR industry.

Abstract:Ergonomics and design have made a greatest relation in producing an artefact or creating a workplace. With the popularization and application of computer, the application of the computer table is much higher compared to the application of computer in our daily life. In order to meet the requirements of new features, its structure is also constantly changing. In this project, a survey of questionnaire was done and also the anthropometric data have been collected. The dimensions of current computer table are then collected and the deficiencies of the current computer table in PLM CATIA Studio, FTK, UTeM have been focused on RULA analysis. Consequently, the problems of the current computer table have been detected through the results of RULA analysis. A new structural design of the computer table has been begun, and comfortableness of computer table has been designed, in order to make it meet the requirements of ergonomics. After the design phase, the structure and shaping have to be compact and beautiful, in order to lead a convenient and comfortable experience for the user. A product of the new design of ergonomics computer table is made and has been focused on RULA analysis as to define the improvement between both tables. Last but not least, the comparison between the current computer table and the new ergonomics computer table were analyzed. The improvement of the new ergonomics computer table was identified and reduced the injuries and disorders. A further investigation on better working posture when using a computer table is required, while further improvement for the product design of new ergonomics computer table is needed, and then applying the ergonomics design aspect in our life.

Abstract:Ergonomic design principles have been attempted to be included into product development and work system design over the times. The advancements in ergonomic evaluation have made it possible to integrate ergonomics into work system design. Virtual Ergonomics and Digital Human Modeling (DHM) are fast emerging as enabling tools for ergonomic design, and analysis in digital manufacturing and product development. Ergonomic studies are done to analyze work-related musculoskeletal disorders on product design, workstations, and work systems by eliminating production prototypes and real-time evaluation of them, DHM shortens the cycle times of the product design and manufacturing processes. Anthropometry databases are used in product design and human ergonomics evaluation, and digital human modeling aids in ergonomics analysis from the beginning of the product and workstation design process. Conventional ergonomic assessment based on predetermined time standards and typical analytical approaches is discussed in the review article. To facilitate digital manikin modeling for human ergonomics analysis, various databases are integrated into the software. In this article, popular human ergonomics analysis software such as CATIA-DELMIA Jack and RAMSIS are studied for their merits and shortcomings in ergonomics design and analysis.
Designing an adjustable ergonomic laptop desk and its evaluating by RULA and NERPA methods

Abstract:Background: Using a computer may lead to pain in wrists, neck, and back. In addition, adopting various body postures like sitting cross-legged, semi-fowler's position, and putting the laptop on the leg may lead to the development of persistent and irreversible discomfort. Objective: The purpose of this research is to design and build an adjustable ergonomic laptop desk based on the anthropometric characteristics of students in the age range of 20 to 30 years and to evaluate its efficiency using RULA and NERPA methods. Methods: This cross-sectional study conducted on 108 students, in which an adjustable and portable ergonomic desk designed and built based on 10 anthropometric dimensions of students and the length and width of 10 different laptop models. Two assessment methods, RULA and NERPA, were used. Wilcoxon statistic test and SPSS version 26 software used for data analysis. Results: The dimensions of the desk were calculated in three positions, and the desk was made with the ability to adjust height, width and tilt, each with two degrees of freedom. The statistical analysis comparing score of RULA and NERPA in two situations without using a desk and using an ergonomic laptop desk had a significant difference (P-value < 0.001). Comparison of RULA and NERPA scores showed that NERPA evaluated the low ergonomic risk level better than RULA method. Conclusions: Due to the ability to adjust the designed desk, the changes in RULA and NERPA score in all three modes, it indicates the effectiveness of the table in improving the body posture of users when using a laptop.

Abstract:COVID-19 all over the world has given an option to employees to work from home. As a result, the number of computer users has increased drastically. According to international market tracker Data Corporation, in 2020, the sales of computer devices exceeded 302 million. The survey conducted on computer users indicates that there was increase in neck pain and back pain. The increase in musculoskeletal disorder is mainly due to bad ergonomic design of computer workstation. The present work is focused on design of computer user chair based on Indian anthropometric standard data. Three different kinds of chair have been modeled in CATIA V5. The bio-mechanical analysis and rapid upper limb assessment analysis were carried out. The structural analyses of chairs have been carried out in ANSYS. The results showed that the chairs were structurally strong for static condition.

Abstract:The system provides an environment for creating the product model, building a virtual human and studying the human-product inter relationship, including comfort assessment, reach zone analysis, posture prediction, and static strength analysis. Experiments were conducted on cleaner, motorcycle and refrigerator, showing that human factors can be quantitatively analyzed and evaluated, and the advice for further improvement can be fed back to designers to promote the product design innovation.

Abstract:This paper proposed an anatomy-based parametric human model in which we tried to overcome some limitations of other models which had used in ergonomics workplace design. Firstly, we improved the algorithm of motion constraints for uniaxial, biaxial and polyaxial joints which were capable of exhibiting complex behavior of the joints. Secondly, two alternative methods for real time motion control were discussed. One of them used motion capture data to establish human posture database according to the motion data matching algorithm, and in order to increase the ability of manipulation with the model, an improved inverse kinematics algorithm was discussed in which the joint motion constraints were fully considered. At last, the experimental results show validity of the methods above.

Abstract:This paper presents a customized design method for ergonomic products via additive manufacturing (AM) considering joint biomechanics. An ergonomic customized design model can be built based on kinesiology involving human joint biomechanics. Manifolds of the human bone can be reconstructed from X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and direct 3D scanning. The conceptual and detailed design of customized products were implemented on ergonomic shoes and insoles. A lightweight lattice structure with variable porosity was generated via structural topology optimization for an ergonomic customized design. Notably, the upper surface of the custom-made insole may adhere perfectly to the plantar surface of the patient, resulting in a lower peak plantar pressure. Finite element analysis (FEA) can be employed to simulate the static or dynamic biomechanical characteristics. The conceptual ergonomic products were forwarded to the machine and fabricated via AM, driven by visual digital twin techniques. The experiments proved that a customized design suitability method for wearable ergonomic products via 3D printing is specifically tailored to the rehabilitation needs of individual customers, while consuming the least cost, time, and materials.

In this paper, the progress of VR-based ergonomics analysis is described from the aspects of conceptual design, assembly planning, workplace layout and maintenance training. The key techniques including virtual human, motion control and biomechanics are also reviewed, and the problems in current research are pointed out. Finally, the future development trend in VR-based ergonomics analysis is presented.

Abstract:Integrating computer vision and machine learning with observation-based ergonomic posture risk assessment methods represents a significant advancement in occupational health and safety, which is essential in reducing work-related musculoskeletal disorders. This collaboration has enhanced the efficiency and scope of ergonomic posture risk assessments. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline was utilized to select relevant papers in this review. A total of 583 research articles were retrieved from the Web of Science and IEEE Xplore databases, and 30 articles meeting the screening criteria were selected for detailed analysis. The results were organized into three distinct stages: Data Preparation, Pose Estimation, and Risk Assessment. During the Data Preparation Stage, the data acquisition devices, datasets, experimental conditions, and observation-based ergonomic posture risk assessment tools utilized in each article were discussed. Subsequently, in the Pose Estimation Stage, the human pose estimation techniques employed and their ability to detect wrist details were outlined. Finally, the risk assessment methods were presented, encompassing Directly Assess Risk Levels, Predict Risk Levels Using Traditional Machine Learning Algorithms, and Advanced Risk Prediction Using Deep Learning Algorithms. We propose several directions for future research. By synthesizing the current literature and identifying critical areas for future development, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the intersection between computer vision, machine learning, and observational ergonomic posture risk assessment, with implications for improving occupational health and safety.

Abstract:Computer-Aided Ergonomics (CAE) makes it possible that people may build a virtual environment for ergonomics evaluation in the product's digital model phase. Manikin with anthropometry data supplies fundamental information in design lifecycle, so it also plays an important role in CAE software. Thanks to the 3D scanning technology, we developed a new ergonomics manikin generation method which could create free-form surface human model from real body. Generation method concluded body scanning, model optimization, and combining skeleton stages. Finally, case study proved that Paper's method could generate more exact manikin than former parametric modeling methods, and it would benefit customized products design.
