Abstract:A series of Mg(Ca)Zr-doped acid-base bifunctional mesoporous silica were synthesized to study the impact of the one-step or two-step impregnation method on material structure. The two-step method seems to be a better way to synthesize metal-based functionalized catalyst and their catalytic performance is investigated using deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction as the probe reaction. The coexisting dual active sites and suitable designing routes endowed highly efficient (Conv. >99.6%, Sel. >99.8%) and robust stability (10 consecutive cycles) of these materials. The present process succeeded in preparing catalysts decorated with acid-base sites by doping acidic and alkali metal species rather than grafting organic groups.

Abstract:A general procedure for surface modification of nano-alumina using N, N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) mediated amidation is reported. Aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids reacted smoothly with nano-alumina pretreated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in the presence of DCC, giving modified aluminas having organic surfaces. The grafted aluminas have been characterized qualitatively by FT-IR or 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy, and quantitatively by thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis. The procedure was applied to polyether dendrons bearing carboxyl groups at the focal points, giving successful grafting of dendrimers onto nano-alumina.

Abstract:Hydrophilic silica sol was organize modified by silane coupling agents(SCA) through solvent-phase-transfer method.Compared with 3-glycidylpropyl-trimethyloxyl silane(KH560)and 3-(methacryloxypropyl)-trimethoxy silane(KH570),nano silica particles modified by long-chain polyether type SCA showed a better performance in dispersion in organic matrix,both epoxy resin and acrylic ester and formed better flexible interface,thus adhesive strength was dramatically increased.

Abstract:The modi. cation of nano-fibriform silica by dimethyldichlorosilane was studied by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, physical N(2) adsorption techniques, differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analyzer.The results show that dimethyl silane derivatives have been successfully covalently grafted on nano fibriform silica. The polarity of the modified product decreases with the substitution of -OH groups by siloxyl groups. Therefore, the modified product can be easily dispersed in organic solvent and its compatibility with organic molecules is improved. After modi. cation the pore volume decreases and the ductility greatly increases, indicating that the modified product is of a higher strength than before. The study demonstrates that the modified product can be used as an ideal additive to reinforce the strength of organic materials. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Hydrophobic silica particles were prepared using the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a modifier by a new route comprising three processes, namely, aqueous mixing, spray drying and thermal treatment. Since SDS dissolves in water, this route is free of an organic solvent and gave a perfect dispersion of SDS, that is, there was excellent contact between SDS and silica particles in the modification reaction. The hydrophobicity of the modified surface was verified by the contact angle of the nano-sized silica particles, which was 107 degrees. The SDS grafting density reached 1.82 nm(-2), which is near the highest value in the literature. The optimal parameters of the SDS/SiO2 ratio in the aqueous phase, process temperature and time of thermal treatment were determined to be 20%, 200 degrees C and 30 min, respectively. The grafting mechanism was studied by comparing the modification with that on same sized TiO2 particles, which indicated that the protons of the Bronsted acid sites on the surface of SiO2 reacted with SDS to give a carbocation which then formed a Si-O-C structure. This work showed that the hydrophilic surface of silica can be modified to be a hydrophobic surface by using a water soluble modifier SDS in a new modification route. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Herein, efficient amino modification of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles using tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) was performed via aqueous mixing, spray drying, and thermal treatment. The hydroxymethyl and amino groups of Tris reacted with the silanol groups on the SiO2 particle surface. Tris amination does not produce volatile organic compounds. Moreover, Tris does not condense itself and can be easily grafted in a single molecular layer on the particle surface. The grafting density of Tris reached 2.60 nm(-2). Tris amination increases the reactivity of the particle surface and significantly enhances the grafting density of stearic acid on the SiO2 particles and the hydrophobicity of the particles.
Study on preparation and surface modification of precipitated silica obtained from fly ash

Abstract:The fly ash, as a starting material, was subjected to alkaline fusion with sodium carbonate and formed NaAlSiO 4. The resultlant reacted with HCl solution and the filtration was undertaken sol-gel transition process to obtain precipitated silica. Then, the surface modification of precipitated silica was conducted using silane coupling agent γ-MPS and stearic acid. The precipitated silica before and after modification were characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FT-IR spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption isotherms measurements. The results showed that the specific surface area and average pore diameter were 364.80m 2/g and 6.02 nm, respectively. The TG-DTA analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that modification agent had been successfully grafted onto the surface of precipitated silica. The γ-MPS showed good modification effect compared with that of stearic acid.

Abstract:Surface NH2-functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous silica was synthesized using toluene diisocyanate (TDI) as bridge molecule. Firstly, surface Si-OH of SBA-15 reacted with one -NCO group of TDI molecular. Then, another unreacted -NCO group of TDI molecular reacted with one -NH2 group of ethylenediamine (EDA). Finally, NH2- group was successfully grafted on mesoporous SBA-15 surface by the above two step method. XRD, N-2 adsorption/desorption analysis, FTIR and Si-29 MAS NMR were used to identify the well-ordered structure and the successful incorporation of -NH2 on the surface of the synthesized materials. Characterizations revealed that such -NH2 graft is an effective method to obtain a high loading of amino on SBA -15.

Abstract:Frechet-type polyether dendrons bearing COOH groups at the focal points have been grafted onto nanometre silica premodified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane by N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide mediated amidation. The dendron grafted silicas have been characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The percentages of net grafting were 4-16% (thus the percentages of total grafting were 11-23%), as determined by TGA and elemental analysis, suggesting that 4-19% of the total amino groups were involved in amidation. The effects of solvent, catalyst and generation number have also been studied.

Abstract:Silica microspheres (SMs) feature non-toxic and high chemical stability, which have a wide range of applications in sensors, photosensitive emulsion and medicine. However, applying SMs as catalysts for synthesis of fine chemicals in organic and medical chemistry field has few been reported before. In this work, SMs were efficiently synthesized through hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction of ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in an alkaline system, and the surface modified SMs catalysts were successfully prepared by the impregnation method. The surface modified SMs catalyzed X − H (X = C, O, N, S) and C C bonds insertion reactions from various diazo compounds with acyclic and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, arylamines and thiophenols were reported, giving the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. The modified species played the key role in the reactions and were identified as the catalytic active species. HRTEM and XRD revealed that the modified species are highly dispersed on the modified SMs surface.

Highly hydrophobic and high-density amino-functionalization were achieved for the nano-silica particles via the coupled process using SDS and APTES as modifiers, respectively. Abstract:Chemical functionalization on nano-scaled silica particles was performed through the reaction between the silanol group of silica and the oxirane ring of epoxy compounds. The occurrence of the surface functionalization and the chemical structures of the resulting products were characterized with FTIR and H-1 NMR. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry and transmission electronic micrography observation on the silica particles also confirmed the surface functionalization. This approach provides another method to organically functionalize nano-scaled silica particles and can be applied to the preparation of organic-inorganic nanocomposites.

Abstract:Nanometer calcium carbonate was modified with Frechet type polyether dendrons bearing a COOH group at the focal point by a wet-coating technique in dichloromethane at room temperature. The interaction between CaCO3 and the dendritic modifier was proven by IR and mass spectroscopy of the modified CaCO3 after thorough extraction with dichloromethane. The amount of tightly bonded organic modifier was estimated by TGA. It was shown that the amount of bonded molecules decreased with increasing generation number due to the larger number of branches. Compared to unmodified CaCO3, the modified CaCO3 possess different dispersibility in water and in organic solvents.

Abstract:Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a widely used inorganic powder, but its industrial applications are limited by its hydrophilicity and oleophobicity. Surface modification of CaCO3 can improve its dispersion and stability in organic materials and further improve its potential value. In this study, CaCO3 particles were modified with silane coupling agent (KH550) and titanate coupling agent (HY311) combined with ultrasonication. The oil absorption value (OAV), activation degree (AG), and sedimentation volume (SV) were employed to evaluate the modification performance. The results showed that the modification effect of HY311 on CaCO3 was better than that of KH550, and ultrasonic treatment played an auxiliary role. Based on response surface analysis, the optimal modification conditions were determined as follows: the HY311 dosage was 0.7%, the KH550 dosage was 0.7%, and ultrasonic time was 10 min. The OAV, AG, and SV of modified CaCO3 under these conditions were 16.65 g DOP/100 g, 99.27%, and 0.65 mL/g, respectively. The SEM, FTIR, XRD and thermal gravimetric analyses indicated successful coating of HY311 and KH550 coupling agents on the surface of CaCO3. The optimization of the dosages of two coupling agents and ultrasonic time improved the modification performance significantly.

Abstract:Effective modification of nanosilica particles in aqueous solution with the hydrophobic modifier bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]-tetrasulfide (Si69) was developed. The modification was carried out through the route of aqueous mixing, spray drying, and thermal treatment. The Si69 hydrolysate was maintained at a low concentration by using micro-injection and well mixed with the nanosilica particles to increase the hydrolysate grafting density on the particle surfaces. Precipitated, fumed, and colloidal silica particles were modified up to a high grafting density of 2.96 nm(-2) , 3.07 nm(-2) and 3.25 nm(-2) , respectively. The dispersibilities of the Si69modified nanosilica particles were improved significantly. The modification performances of the three kinds of nanosilica particles are different, which result from the silanol characteristics and the Bronsted/Lewis acid sites present on the particle surfaces.

Abstract:Dendritic polyesters bearing COOH groups at the focal points were grafted onto nanometer silica premodified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane by N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide mediated amidation. The products were characterized qualitatively by FTIR, TGA and elemental analysis. It was shown that a significant grafting (10%-15% net grafting for this reaction) was obtained despite the steric hindrance of the dendrons.

Abstract:A simple method is used to modify the surface of NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites with stearic acid (SA) at room temperature in about 5 minutes.The SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites are hydrophobic and they exhibit good self‐cleaning property and act as good adsorbent for the removal of crystal violet and rhodamine B from aqueous solutions. In the present study, a quick surface modification method has been developed for the modification NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites using stearic acid (SA). The surface modification of NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites with stearic acid was confirmed by various analytical techniques (FT‐IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetry (TG), carbon and hydrogen (CH) and XPS). There is no change in XRD patterns, and FE‐SEM and TEM images of NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites after modification with SA. FT‐IR analysis of SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites shows characteristic IR bands of carboxylate group. TG and CH analyses also confirm the presence of SA in the NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites. XPS analysis of SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites shows the presence of carbon atoms of stearic acid. The SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites show water contact angle greater than 90° which suggests their hydrophobic nature. The SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites were explored for self‐cleaning and also as adsorbent for the removal of crystal violet and rhodamine B dyes from aqueous solutions. The SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites remove the dyes within 30 minutes. The effect of various adsorption parameters (adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, and temperature) was investigated to understand the optimum adsorption conditions. The SA modified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites show better self‐cleaning property as compared to unmodified NiO‐Al2O3 nanocomposites.

Abstract:This study investigates the use of 3-Aminopropyl triethoxy silane as a surface modifier for Cu-coated Carbon Fibers. The modified fibers were subsequently incorporated into Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene matrix composites through melt blending and high-temperature compression molding. The research evaluates the effect of 3-Aminopropyl triethoxy silane on the interfacial structure and mechanical performance of these composites. Results demonstrate a substantial enhancement in the wettability and surface energy of Cu-coated Carbon Fibers, with the static contact angle reduced from 111.2° to 84.5° and surface energy increased from 44.67 mN·m −1 to 56.66 mN·m −1 . These surface modifications contributed to an 82.7 % increase in tensile strength and a 76.4 % improvement in tensile modulus of the resultant composites.
