Abstract:Acidity plays a vital role in methane conversion by co-feeding method, which is one of the best strategies to improve the utilization and gentle the reaction conditions of methane. In this work, Zn, Ni, Mo, La, Ga, Fe and Co-impregnated ZSM-5 zeolites have been prepared with the same substitutions to variate the acidities and tested in co-aromatization of methanol with methane. It is demonstrated that the new medium-strong acid sites formed by metal and strong acid sites are the key role to activate methane in co-reaction. Zn-modified ZSM-5 catalyst is preferred to exhibit the best methane conversion of 12%, whose aromatic selectivity increases from 27.2% to 52.2% compared with that of HZSM-5. Besides, the addition of methane further improves the production of high-valued aromatics compared with methanol to aromatics (MTA) reaction.
Remarkable Improvement on the Methane Aromatization Reaction: A Highly Selective and Coking-Resistant Catalyst

Abstract:An effective way (without addition of any oxidative gases to the reactant) to suppress coke formation (by modification of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst) and thus to significantly improve the aromatic selectivity in the methane aromatization reaction is presented in this study. A greater yield of benzene and an enhanced durability of the catalyst when compared with the conventional Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts are observed. Multinuclear solid-state NMR, TPD, TPO, TG, and UV-Raman methods are applied to characterize and rationalize the structure-property relationship of the improved catalytic performance of the modified catalysts. From this work, we found that only a small fraction of tetrahedral framework aluminum, which corresponds to the Bronsted acid sites, is sufficient to accomplish the aromatization of the intermediates in methane aromatization reaction, while the superfluous strong Bronsted acid sites, which can be removed upon steaming treatment, are shown to be related with the aromatic carbonaceous deposits on the catalysts.

Abstract:The interaction between Mo species and a conventionally microsized and particularly nanosized HZSM-5 support was studied by high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR techniques. As proved by 27Al and 29Si MAS as well as CP/MAS NMR investigations, this interaction was so strong that the framework aluminum of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites could be extracted. With increasing Mo loading, more nonframework aluminum, resonanced at ca. 30 ppm, appeared in the 27Al MAS NMR spectrum of the Mo-loaded nanosized HZSM-5 catalyst. Meanwhile, this strong interaction led to the formation of more new Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines on the nanosized HZSM-5 support than on the microsized HZSM-5 support. The appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines resulted in fewer active catalysts for the methane dehyro-aromatization. The results of 1H MAS NMR using perfluorotributyl amine as a probe molecule demonstrated that Mo species preferentially reacted with the silanols and nonframework AlOH on the external surface of microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites. In addition, impregnated Mo species remained predominantly on the external surface of the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite, although there was a possibility that they might migrate into the lattice channels of the microsized HZSM-5 zeolite. The migration of some Mo species into the zeolite channels might be beneficial for the conversion of methane to aromatics in the absence of oxygen.

Abstract:Mo/HZSM-5 is a typical catalyst for methane dehydro-aromatization in the absence of oxygen. The catalyst was prepared with impregnation method in previous studies. In this paper, mechanical mixing, solid reaction and microwave methods were used for Mo/HZSM-5 preparation. In addition, the catalytic performance of the catalyst for methane dehydro-aromatization was investigated. Compared with impregnated Mo/HZSM-5 sample, the catalyst samples prepared with mechanical mixing, solid reaction and microwave methods show higher selectivity for aromatics and lower selectivity for coke. BET, XRD and NH3TPD experimental results exhibited that the location of Mo species is heavily dependent on the preparation method. It is suggested that the Mo species located on the external surface of the zeolite is more efficient for methane dehydro-aromatization, and at the same time suppresses the coke formation.

Abstract:The effect of preparation method. Mo content, pretreatment conditions, space velocity, reaction temperature on the preformance of methane aromatization under oxygen-free conditions over HZSM-5 supported Mo catalyst has been studied, the effect of carbon deposition on catalyst after reaction and regeneration by carbon burning with O2 was investigated. It was found that the initial activity of catalysts prepared by grinding technique was higher than that of catalysts prepared by impregnating technique, but the activity of the former decreased quickly with reaction time increased, and decreased obviously after regeneration, while the activity of the latter was similar to that of fresh catalysts. The catalyst with Mo content of 3. 5%��4. 0% showed the best aromatization activity. Decreasing space velocity and increasing reaction temperature improved the aromatization activity. With reaction time increased, the selectivity for ethylene enhanced while selectivity for benzene decreased. Furthermore, XPS results suggested that the most of Mo6+ in the catalysts prepared by impregnating method dispersed in the framework of HZSM-5 zeolite and those of grinding method dispersed on the surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, the carbon content on the catalyst surface increased rapidly, and Mo6+ in the ground catalysts was reduced to Mo0 after reaction for 4 h. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that molybdena carbene with configuration of MoO3 = CH2 is an initial product of methane aromatization reaction.

Abstract:Although Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst is widely used in the methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction, the conventional microporous HZSM-5 with long diffusion path often causes the blockage of channels and pores by coke. In this work, a series of hollow HZSM-5 zeolites with different cavity sizes and tunable shell thickness were prepared by varying the alkali treatment time. After being loaded with Mo, the catalytic performances of the hollow catalysts were investigated in MDA reaction. Compared with conventional solid Mo/Z5 catalyst, the hollow Mo/Z5( x ) catalysts exhibit higher CH 4 conversion and C 6 H 6 selectivity, which show an increasing trend with the increase of inner cavity size and decrease of zeolite shell thickness. Specifically, the hollow Mo/Z5(24) catalyst achieves the maximum CH 4 conversion of 13.8% and C 6 H 6 selectivity of 72%. It suggests that the hollow structure is conducive to enhance the accessibility of feed or intermediates to the Brønsted acid sites within zeolites and facilitates the rapid diffusion of the C 6 H 6 from the intraframework channels rather than further polymerization to the coke. Furthermore, this novel structure endows stronger interaction between the Mo species and the acid sites, resisting agglomeration of Mo-species on external zeolite surface at high temperature. This research provides a new insight into exploiting a candidate catalyst for the MDA reaction.

Abstract:The effects of HZSM5 Si/Al ratio, cobalt additive and HCl-acidified pretreatment on methane conversion and selectivity to aromatics have been investigated for non-oxidative conversion of methane to aromatics. The HZSM5 (E) with low Si/Al ratio (Si/Al=20) has better methane conversion and benzene selectivity than HZSM5 (D) (Si/Al=55). The synergistic effect is exhibited in 3% Mo-1% Co-HCl/HZSM5 (E) catalyst, on which a high methane conversion of 10.7% can be achieved, in comparison with 5.3% methane conversion on 3% Mo/HZSM5 (E). The catalysts have been characterized by XPS and the reaction mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of Mo/H[B]ZSM-5 has been investigated for methane non-oxidative aromatization and compared with that of a Mo/H[Al]ZSM-5 catalyst. It is found that the non-oxidative aromatization of methane proceeds only in the presence of weak acidic sites without the participation of strong acidic sites. Coke is found to be the main cause of the rapid decrease in the activity of Mo/H[B]ZSM-5 catalysts.

Abstract:Combining the H-1 MAS NMR, XPS, XRF and TG measurements with the catalyst evaluation, the effect of silanation of HZSM-5 zeolite on the catalytic performance of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in methane dehydro-aromatization was investigated. The results showed that the silanation of HZSM-5 zeolite resulted in not only the removal of the external acid sites but also the dealumiantion of HZSM-5 zeolite, which led to an improvement in the catalytic performance of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in the methane dehydro-aromatization owing to the suppression of formation of carbon deposited on Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:The NMR analysis of high-temperature reactions, even at temperatures over 800 K, has been carried out with the aid of a specially designed apparatus. Abstract:TEOS as the exotic silicon source was used to modify HZSM-5 zeolite by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a vapor phase flow system. Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts prepared by using silicon-modified zeolite showed higher activity and stability than those prepared by using non-modified HZSM-5 zeolite in methane dehydro-aromatization (MDA) under non-oxidative conditions. The effect of silanation on the acid sites and the interaction between the Mo species and the acid sites have been studied by using FT-IR, NH3-TPD and 1H MAS NMR. The exotic silicon species not only selectively covered and eliminated almost all of the Brönsted acid sites on the external surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, but also affected the internal Brönsted acid sites, which are close to the channel openings. This results in an obvious decrease in the number of Brönsted acid sites per unit cell. In the MDA reaction, the Brönsted acid sites provided active sites not only for the polymerization and aromatization of the active intermedia, but also for the formation of carbonaceous deposits, which is a crucial factor leading to the deactivation of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. Only a small fraction of Brönsted acid sites, ca. 0.6 per unit cell, was required to accomplish the aromatization, and the superfluous free Brönsted acid sites would cause severe carbonaceous deposits under non-oxidative condition at a temperature as high as 973K.

Abstract:The effects of particle size of HZSM-5 zeolite and silicon sources for preparation of HZSM-5 on the reaction performance of methane dehydro-aromatization over Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst were studied by changing the synthesis conditions and systems. The results showed that the catalytic performance of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in which the HZSM-5 was synthesized via soluble water-glass was better than that of Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst in which the HZSM-5 was synthesized via silica sol. H-1 MAS NMR measurements revealed that the amount of Bronsted acid sites in the former is more than that in the latter. In addition, by using the HZSM-5 zeolite with smaller particle size, the corresponding Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst shows better catalytic stability.
The performance of methane aromatization on Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst

Abstract:The effects of reaction temperature, pretreatment method and Cr loading on methane aromatization over Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst under non-oxidizing condition were investigated. The results indicate that when Cr/Mo molar ratio is 0.07, the CH4 conversion and aromatics selectivity reach 11.6% and 97-2% respectively. Raising temperature is beneficial to the CH4 conversion and a 15.8% of CH4 conversion is obtained at 1 023 K. The catalyst pretreated with N2 is better than that with H2 and CH4. The NH3-TPD-MS results show that the Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst has more sites of strong acidity and mid-strong acidity than Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. The results of decomposition of isopropanol show that the surface acidity on Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 is increased at high temperature. This might be one of the reasons that the activity for methane aromatization is increased over Mo-Cr/HZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:Complete reduction of Mo species interacting strongly with a HZSM-5 zeolite support in methane is difficult, and the reduction product, MoCxOy, is a key active species in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) under nonoxidative conditions. Pretreatment in H2 at 623 K could lead to topotactic transformation of the Mo species from hexagonally close packing (hcp) to face-centered cubic (fcc) structures; the fcc MoCxOy species are more active and more stable than the hcp MoCxOy in MDA. After initial H2 pretreatment at 623 K, followed by a CH4-treatment, the Mo species on a MoO3/HZSM-5 catalyst prepared by mechanical mixing was reduced and carburized to form fcc α-MoC1−x species on the extra surface of the zeolite. Methane molecules activated by the α-MoC1−x were converted mainly into carbon deposits instead of benzene. Both the most active Mo species and the neighboring Brönsted acid sites are essential in obtaining a perfect catalyst in the reaction of MDA.
Study on Bifunctionality of Mo/HZSM-5 Catalysts for Methane Dehydro-Aromatization under Non-oxidative Condition

Abstract:The optimum Mo/(H + ) ratio per unit cell of the active precursors in Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts for methane dehydro-aromatization, measured by 1 H MAS NMR, was found to be about 1 when adjusting the acid sites by altering either the SiO2/Al2O3 ratios or the Mo loading. This implies that a concerted interaction between the Mo species and the Bronsted acid sites probably features the bifunctionality of the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst. On the other hand, it was found that the driving force for Mo species to move into the HSZM-5 zeolite channels and the interaction between the Mo species and the Bronsted acid sites are closely and proportionably related with the amount of Bronsted acid sites per unit cell.

Abstract:The Mo/ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized by solid-state reaction with the mixture of MoO3 and HZSM-5 under N2 atmosphere at 500°C, and characterized by XRD, MAS NMR, BET, NH3-TPD, FT-IR and powder XRD structural analysis. The results showed that the Mo species were well dispersed on the internal and external surface of the zeolite ZSM-5, while the framework of ZSM-5 was retained. One part of Mo species inside the channels of ZSM-5 can be described as [Mo5O12]6+ units in the Mo/ZSM-5 with 8wt% MoO3 loading. The [Mo5O12]6+ units are situated at the cross-point of the zigzag channel and the straight channel. They interacted with the framework of ZSM-5, and decreased the Brönsted acid sites remarkably. There was about 0.47 [Mo5O12]6+ unit in every cell of the ZSM-5 on an average. The other part of Mo species is distributed on the external surface of the ZSM-5 crystals, and can be described as crystallites of molybdenum oxides. The distribution of Mo species on HZSM-5 increased the Lewis acid sites in the catalysts. The [Mo5OxCy]n+ units inside the channels of ZSM-5 partially reduced by methane maintained the catalytic activity of the catalysts and were beneficial for the formation of benzene during methane dehydrogenation and aromatization at 700°C.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of Mo/CuH-ZSM-5 was compared with that of Mo/H-ZSM-5 for methane aromatization in the absence of oxygen. The Cu ions acted as promoters, and the activity and stability of catalysts for methane aromatization were enhanced to some extent. The fresh and reacted catalysts was studied by XRD, ESR and XPS methods, and it is found that by the addition of Cu species, the reduction of MoO3 was suppressed and the Cu species itself was reduced. It is supposed that the Mo species with a higher oxidative state is responsible for the activation and conversion of methane.

Abstract:Post-steaming treatment of Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts results in more molybdenum species migrating into and residing in the HZSM-5 zeolite channels. This is confirmed by XRF and XPS measurements. 1 H MAS NMR and 29 Si MAS NMR also demonstrate that the number of free Brönsted acid sites decreases in the Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts that underwent post-steaming treatment, compared to untreated Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts. As a result, the deactivation rate constant ( k d ) on the Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst after post-steaming treatment for 0.5h is much smaller, and the catalyst therefore shows remarkable stability in the probe reaction of methane dehydro-aromatization. The results suggest that a more beneficial bi-functional balance between active Mo species for methane activation and acid sites for the following aromatization is developed over those Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts that have experienced post-steaming treatment for 0.5h, in comparison with the untreated Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts.
