Abstract:Single-chain microgels were synthesized successfully from the cross-linkable poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) copolymer. This type of microgel has the exact chemical structure, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of its precursor. It provides a direct way to compare the properties of linear polymers with those of their networks. The viscosity properties show that the microgels have lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) that are even higher than those of the corresponding linear copolymers. Abstract:The "single-chain" microgels were synthesized successfully from the crosslinkable Poly(N-isopropylacryamide) copolymers. The type of microgels has the sane chemical constitution and average molecular weight as those of their precursors. It was confirmed that the "single-chain" microgels were prepared successfully from the data of viscosity and size-exclusion chromatogram. If mixing the microgels with SDS, the LCST of the "single-chain" microgels will be much higher than that of the "multi-chain" microgels. The fact comes from its high specific surface area, which can adsorbs more SDS than "multi-chain" microgels. The "single-chain" microgels have also higher crosslinking density than the "multi-chain" microgels.

Abstract:A series of poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PVC-g-PNIPAM) amphiphilic copolymers with different graft lengths and densities were synthesized via the single electron transfer-living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) of NIPAM using poly(vinyl chloride-co-allyl alpha-bromoisobutyrate) as macroinitiator. The living nature of SET-LRP grafting copolymerization was verified by the kinetics study and narrow molecular weight distribution of PNIPAM grafts. The chemical structure, micellisation, and thermally-induced multistep aggregation of PVC-g-PNIPAMs were investigated. PVC-g-PNIPAMs form micelles comprised of a PVC core and PNIPAM corona in water at room temperature. These micelles are thermoresponsive and show a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The micelle size and LCST of PVC-g-PNIPAM increase with increasing the graft density and length of PNIPAM. PVC-g-PNIPAM exhibits a very unique aggregation behavior above its LCST and forms a three-dimensional macroscopic aggregate with a well-defined and tunable shape at an extremely low concentration (similar to 0.1 wt%). The aggregate shrinks to a more compact structure with the further increase of temperature. Higher copolymer concentration, longer graft length, and lower graft density are favorable for the macroscopic micelle aggregation of PVC-g-PNIPAMs. A self-standing and superporous PVC-g-PNIPAM material having an extremely low density of similar to 0.01 g cm(-3) and a high porosity of >99% is attained after freeze-drying the micelle aggregate.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) acrylate microgels were obtained by emulsion polymerization of self-emulsified PU acrylate terminated by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate without any extra emulsifier and crosslinker. Moreover, the PU acrylate was also used as stabilizer and crosslinker to synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)–PU composite microgels via emulsion polymerization, which provided a new method to synthesize PU microgels and their composite microgels. The kinetics of microgel synthesis was studied by gel permeation chromatography. The dynamic rheological behaviors indicated that a crosslinked structure was formed. The frequency dependency of the loss tangent and complex viscosities showed strong relationships with the microgel structure. Those microgels with rigid PMMA core showed higher ability to slide than the soft PU acrylate microgel, which had influence on the changing of loss tangent with frequency. All the microgels swollen in tetrahydrofuran exhibited high viscosities and strong shear-thinning behaviors. As a sort of flexible microgel, the PU microgel was able to form a coherent film at room temperature, which was distinct from hard microgels.
Viscoelastic Study of Single Chain Cyclized Polymeric Nanoparticles and Linear Polymers Blends

Abstract:It is of great importance to polymerize multivinyl monomers and simultaneously circumvent uncontrollable polymerization process and low gel point. Hereby, a type of divinyl monomer: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was successfully homopolymerized by kinetically controlled Cu-0 and Cu-II-meadiated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). The kinetic study showed a well-controlled polymerization behaviour. During the initial stage, a linear chain propagation was observed with a low polydispersity (< 1.35) demonstrating the controlled/living polymerization feature. However, the products obtained during this stage showed a high consumption of pendent vinyl groups (around 28%) based on the analysis by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR). This high pendent vinyl conversion in the linear chain propagation stage is attributed to the significant involvement of the intramolecular cyclization. The promotion of the intramolecular cyclization and suppression of the intermolecular crosslinking is achieved by the low kinetic chain length and low polymer volume concentration. Given the coexistence of linear chain propagation and high pendent vinyl conversion, the novel single chain cyclized polymer structure was formed during this process, which was further used as polymeric nanoparticles to modify the viscoelasticity of linear poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) melts. The essentially similar chemical structure between the EGDMA and MMA ensures the minimization of enthalpic interactions and dispersion forces between the nanoparticles and linear melts. The oscillatory rheology study and the subsequent time temperature superposition based on the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation demonstrated the coexistence of the segmental relaxation at high frequencies and chain relaxation at low frequencies. The complex viscosity studied as a function of the shear frequency showed the decrease in terminal viscosity with addition of 10 wt% single chain cyclized polyEGDMA nanoparticles. A further decrease was also observed with the addition of 20 wt% nanoparticles, which is not in agreement with Einstein relationship between the complex viscosity and fraction of added particles. This strategy provides a simple and efficient approach to control polymerization of multivinyl monomers, and the unexpected decrease in viscosity of the blend system should in principle open a new avenue to modify polymer melts and molten systems.

Abstract:Microgels with internal nanophase-separated structures were fabricated by surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and ionic liquid comonomers, namely, 1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium bromide (VIM nBr) with various lengths n of long alkyl side chain, in an aqueous solution at 70 °C using N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linker. Combined techniques of transmission electron microscopy, dynamic and static light-scattering, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and polarized optical microscopy were employed to systematically investigate the sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained microgels as well as the microstructures and phase transition of nanophases inside the microgels. The obtained P(NIPAm/VIM nBr) microgels are spherical with narrow size distributions, and the nanophases have a radius of about 8-12 nm and are randomly distributed inside the microgels. The cooperative competition of the hydrophilic quaternary vinylimidazole moieties and hydrophobic long alkyl side chains determines the thermal sensitive behavior of the P(NIPAm/VIM nBr) microgels. DSC and WAXD results reveal that the nanophases consist of the ordered alkyl side chains with a layered crystalline structure at low temperature, which exhibit a low melting temperature and a broad melting transition. SAXS results further show that the nanophases form a layered liquid crystalline structure at high temperature for the microgel suspensions and freeze-dried microgels.

Abstract:Utilizing the hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxysilyl moieties, organic-inorganic hybrid poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide-co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate) P(NIPAM-co-AM-co-TMSPMA) microgels were prepared via two different methods. The first method was that the microgels were post-fabricated from the crosslinkable linear P(NIPAM-co-AM-co-TMSPMA) terpolymer aqueous solutions above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the terpolymer. For the second method, the microgels were directly synthesized by conventional surfactant free emulsion copolymerization of NIPAM, AM, and TMSPMA. The hydrodynamic diameter and stability of the resultant P(NIPAM-co-AM-co-TMSPMA) microgels strongly depend on the pH and temperature of the microgel aqueous solution. The hydrodynamic diameters of the microgels decreased with increasing the measuring temperature. The phase transition temperature of the microgels was found to be around 34°C, which was independent of the initial terpolymer concentration and shifted to lower temperature with increasing the preparation temperature. Increasing the initial amount of AM will enhance the instability of the microgels at high pH values. Moreover, the P(NIPAM-co-AM-co-TMSPMA) microgels obtained from the linear terpolymer had more homogeneous microstructures as compared with the corresponding NIPAM/AM/TMSPMA microgels prepared by one step emulsion copolymerization as revealed by light scattering measurements.

Abstract:A type of thermosensitive ionic microgel was successfully prepared via the simultaneous quaternized cross-linking reaction during the surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) as the main monomer and 1-vinylimidazole or 4-vinylpyridine as the comonomer. 1,4-Dibromobutane and 1,6-dibromohexane were used as the halogenated compounds to quaternize the tertiary amine in the comonomer, leading to the formation of a cross-linking network and thermosensitive ionic microgels. The sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained ionic microgels were systematically investigated by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic and static light scattering (DLS and SLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), and UV-visible spectroscopy. The obtained ionic microgels were spherical in shape with narrow size distribution. These ionic microgels exhibited thermosensitive behavior and a unique feature of poly(ionic liquid) in aqueous solutions, of which the counteranions of the microgels could be changed by anion exchange reaction with BF4K or lithium trifluoromethyl sulfonate (PFM-Li). After the anion exchange reaction, the ionic microgels were stable in aqueous solution and could be well dispersed in the solvents with different polarities, depending on the type of counteranion. The sizes and thermosensitive behavior of the ionic microgels could be well tuned by controlling the quaternization extent, the type of comonomer, halogenated compounds, and counteranions. The ionic microgels showed superior swelling properties in aqueous solution. Furthermore, these ionic microgels also showed capabilities to encapsulate and release the anionic dyes, like methyl orange, in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Degradable and thermosensitive microgels were successfully prepared via simultaneous quaternization and siloxane condensation during surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, with N-vinylcaprolactam as the main monomer and 1-vinylimidazole (VIM) as the comonomer, in the presence of (3-bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane (BPTMOS). The formation mechanism of cross-linking network was attributed to the hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxysilyl groups of BPTMOS and the quaternization of imidazole moiety of VIM by the bromine group of BPTMOS, leading to the microgels. The microgels were spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution, stable in an acidic buffer solution, but degradable in neutral and alkaline solutions. The presence of quaternized imidazolium in the same chain segment of Si-O-Si cross-linking points promoted the decomposition of Si-O-Si bonds and hence the degradation of the microgels. The obtained microgels could load and release the model drug, doxorubicin. The size, thermosensitivity, stability, degradation rate, and drug release behavior of the resultant microgels could be tuned by controlling the cross-linking degree, chemical composition, and degradation medium.
Thermo-sensitive ionic microgels via post quaternization cross-linking: fabrication, property, and potential application

Abstract:A post quaternized cross-linking strategy was reported to fabricate thermo-sensitive ionic microgels from thermo-sensitive linear copolymer poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -1-vinylimidazole) [P(NIPAm- co -VIM)] or poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -4-vinylpyridine) [P(NIPAm- co -4VP)] in aqueous solution at elevated temperature above its critical transition temperature ( T c ). 1,4-dibromobutane, 1,5-dibromopentane, or 1,6-dibromohexane were chosen as the quaternization cross-linker to quaternize the imidazole or pyridine moieties, leading to the formation of cross-linking and ionic network. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic and static light scattering (DLS & SLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), and UV-visible spectroscopy were used to systematically investigate the sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained microgels. The sizes, swelling properties, and uniformity of microgels could be tuned by selecting proper quaternization cross-linking reaction temperature and cross-linkers. The obtained ionic microgels showed capability to adsorb the heavy metal salts like K 2 Cr 2 O 7 in aqueous solution via the anion exchange reactions. It was also demonstrated that other functional groups could be introduced into the microgel networks if the unquaternized moieties were available.

Abstract:This review discusses the current knowledge of interfacial and bulk interactions of biopolymeric microgels in relation to the well-established properties of synthetic microgels for applications as viscosity modifiers and Pickering stabilisers. We present a timeline showing the key milestones in designing microgels and their bulk/ interfacial performance. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgels have remained as the protagonist in the synthetic microgel domain whilst proteins or polysaccharides have been primarily used to fabricate biopolymeric microgels. Bulk properties of microgel dispersions are dominated by the volume fraction ( φ ) of the microgel particles, but φ is difficult to pinpoint, as addressed by many theoretical models. By evaluating recent experimental studies over the last five years, we find an increasing focus on the analysis of microgel elasticity as a key parameter in modulating their packing at the interfaces, within the provinces of both synthetic and biopolymeric systems. Production methods and physiochemical factors shown to influence microgel swelling in the aqueous phase can have a significant impact on their bulk as well as interfacial performance. Compared to synthetic microgels, biopolymer microgels show a greater tendency for polydispersity and aggregation and do not appear to have a core-corona structure. Comprehensive studies of biopolymeric microgels are still lacking, for example, to accurately determine their inter- and intra- particle interactions, whilst a wider variety of techniques need to be applied in order to allow comparisons to real systems of practical usage.

Abstract:By utilizing the hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxysilyl groups, thermo-sensitive organic/inorganic hybrid poly[ N-isopropylacrylamide- co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate] [P(NIPAm- co-TMSPMA)] microgels were successfully prepared via two different methods without addition of any surfactant. First, the microgels were obtained by a two-step method; that is, the linear copolymer P(NIPAm- co-TMSPMA) was first synthesized by free radical copolymerization, and the aqueous solution of the copolymer was then heated above its low critical solution temperature (LCST) to give colloid particles, which were subsequently cross-linked via the hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxysilyl groups to form the microgels. Second, the microgels were also prepared via conventional surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) of the monomers NIPAm and TMSPMA. TMSPMA can act as the cross-linkable monomer. No surfactant was involved in the preparation of the hybrid microgels. The obtained microgels were rather spherical and exhibited reversible thermo-sensitive behavior. The size, morphology, swellability, and phase transition behavior of the microgels were dependent on the initial copolymer or monomer concentration, preparation temperature, and the content of TMSPMA. The size of microgels obtained by SFEP was found to be more uniform than that by the two-step method. The hybrid microgels obtained by these two methods had more homogeneous microstructures than those prepared via conventional emulsion polymerization with chemical cross-linker N, N'-methylene-bisacrylamide.
Formation of Microgels by Utilizing the Reactivity of Catechols with Radicals

Abstract:The reactivity of catechols with radicals was applied for the first time to synthesize cross-linked nanostructures, i.e. microgels, without addition of any other cross-linker. Stable microgels with narrow size distribution were successfully obtained via surfactant free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) of acrylamide-type main monomers, namely, acrylamide (AM), N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), N-vinylcaprolactam (VCL), N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), and (dimethylamino)propylmethacrylamide (DMAPM), and vinyl comonomer bearing unprotected catechol in aqueous solution at 70 degrees C. The formation mechanism of cross-linking network structures was mainly attributed to the reactions between unprotected catechol groups of polymer chains and the radicals of propagating chains during SFEP. With catechol chemistry, microgels with fully water-soluble polymers as scaffolds were achieved without using any surfactant stabilizer.
The Coil-to-Globule-to-Brush Transition of Linear Thermally Sensitive Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Chains Grafted on a Spherical Microgel

Abstract:By using free-radical RAFT living polymerization, we successfully grafted linear poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains onto a spherical PNIPAM/HEA copolymer microgel to form a novel core-shell nanostructure. Both the tethered PNIPAM shell and the copolymer microgel core shrunk as the temperature increased, but in different temperature ranges. In the range similar to28-32 degreesC, the tethered PNIPAM chains under-went a coil-to-globule transition, while in the range similar to32-35 degreesC, the shrinking of the copolymer core induced a re-stretching of the collapsed PNIAPM chains on its surface to form a polymer brush in poor solvent. Our results showed that in the re-stretching process, the average hydrodynamic volume per tethered PNIPAM chain remained a constant, confirming a prediction made a long time ago that the collapsed chains in poor solvent were incompressible.

Abstract:In this work, the mechanical behavior of sparsely cross-linked, neutral polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels containing densely cross-linked polyelectrolyte microgels of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic sodium) (PNaAMPS) were studied systematically by varying the formulations. The microgel-reinforced (MR) hydrogels have a two-phase composite structure, where the disperse phase is the rigid double-network (DN) microgels, and the continuous phase is the soft PAAm matrix. At the optimal formulation, the MR gels showed high mechanical strength and toughness, comparable to conventional DN hydrogels. The two critical parameters for the substantial enhancement of mechanical strength and toughness of MR gels are the concentration of PNaAMPS microgel and the molar ratio of the PAAm to the PNaAMPS in the microgel phase. Selective dyeing of the embedded microgels in MR gels allowed for visualization of the deformation of microgels, and we found that the local strain of microgels was much smaller than the global strain applied on MR gels; this indicates that isostress model (Reuss's model) is more suitable than isostrain model (Voigt's model) for this composite system.

Abstract:Spherical hydrogels were prepared by precipitation copolymerization of N-vinylcaprolactam and sodium acrylate [P(VCL-co-NaA)] at 60 degreesC. As a thermally sensitive polymer, the increase of temperature in the range 25-40 degreesC can lead to a continuous shrinking of PVCL homopolymer chains. The copolymerization of a few molar percent of NaA. into a PVCL chain increases its swelling extent and shifts its shrinking temperature slightly higher. Our results revealed that in the shrinking process, calcium ions (Ca2+) induced a profound complexation of the P(VCL-co-NaA) microgels at a critical temperature (T-c) which was nearly independent of the NaA content. However, both the rate and degree of the complexation increase as the NaA content increases at T-c. One the basis of this study, we further studied the complexation of P(VCL-co-NaA) microgels with gelatin in the presence of calcium ions and prepared chemically crosslinked of the gelatin gels with embedded P(VCL-co-NaA) microgels. Our results showed that the shrinking of the embedded P(VCL-co-NaA) microgels could lead to the shrinking of gelatin gels. The biomedical application of this gelatin/microgel composite have been exploited.
Preparation and Characterization of Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate) Microgel Latexes

Abstract:Monodisperse cationic thermosensitive latex microgels have been prepared by radical-initiated precipitation polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide, methylene bisacrylamide using 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) as an initiator and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) as a cationic monomer. The final microgel latexes were characterized with respect to water-soluble polymer formation, particle size and size distribution. Adding cationic monomer (DMAEMA) was found to drastically affect the particle size, but not the size distribution as observed both by transmission electron microscopy and quasielastic light scattering (QELS). However, too high a DMAEMA concentration in the feed composition led to enhanced formation of water-soluble polymer. The volume phase-transition temperature of cleaned microgels examined by QELS (particle size versus temperature) was found to be around 32 °C and was slightly dependent on the concentration of the cationic monomer. The volume phase-transition temperature range becomes broader with increasing cationic monomer concentration. In addition, the pH of the polymerization medium was found to affect the final particle size and amount of water-soluble polymer formed.

Abstract:Core-shell microgels based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were prepared by aqueous dispersion polymerization and characterized by dynamic light scattering and electrophoretic measurements with regard to the PEG addition and crosslinkers. The results indicated that the PNIPAM-PEG microgel was temperature sensitive and carried anionic charge on the surface. With the increase of PEG macro-monomer dosage, volume phase transition temperature increased, the transition temperature range became broad, while the absolute value of electrophoretic, mobility of the microgels increased to a maximum and then decreased. In addition, only PEG macro-monomer with sufficient hydrophilic-CH2-CH2-O-chain length could stabilize microgel particles during the polymerization.

Abstract:Semi-transparent reactive microgel in nanosize has been prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization using a common emulsifier, crosslinking agent and functional monomer. The microgels are translucent reactive nanoparticles, with the size of 40-100nm, consisting of inner-crosslinked polymer up to 40%. FT-IR proved the functional groups, such as epoxy and hydroxy, are on the surface of the microgel nanoparticles. Rheological detection demonstrated the apparent pseudoplasticity of the non-aqueous microgel dispersion prepared by the phase transfering from the O/W microlatexes.

Abstract:A set of poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) p(NIPAM) microgels was successfully prepared through precipitation polymerization (PP) using acryloyl starch nanoparticles (ASNPs) as crosslinkers. Functionalized starch nanoparticles used in microgel preparation, with a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.78 (ASNP12) or 1.37 (ASNP24) were found to have different properties. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) revealed that microgels prepared with ASNP12 exhibit a higher swelling capacity compared to the microgels designed with ASNP24, which was also observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), showing super soft microgels flattened into disk shape on the substrate. This may be related to softer and surface smoothed microgels. Turbidity analysis revealed a slight shift of the so-called volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) towards higher values for microgels synthesized with ASNP24, indicating its contribution as a hydrophilic comonomer. Considering their high swelling capacity, these bio-based crosslinked microgels are potential materials for adsorptive processes. They can also be considered as candidates for biomedical applications due to the presence of a biopolymer in their structure.
