Abstract:In recent years, the design and synthesis of photochromic polymers for their potential optical applications, such as data storage, photo-optical switches and display devices have been developed. Nine kinds of familiar photochromic polymers, such as spiropyrans, spirooxazines, diarylethene, azobenzene, phenoxy-naphthacenequinone, fulgimide, thioindigo, dithizonate and dihydroindolizine, have been briefly reviewed. The emphases on future R&D of the photochromic polymers including improving the concentration of photochromic molecules, the application of spacer units, avoiding gelification of polymer, seeking much convenient synthetic routes and incorporating other functional groups are presented.

Abstract:Diarylethene systems have attracted widely attentions and have been applied in photo,electronic,thermal,chemical,biochemcial and so on,for their excellent thermal stability and fatigue resistance.However,it still remains large room to improve the performance and the practical application areas for diarylethene type photochromic dyes.This article focuses on the progress of diarylethene derivatives in recent years.Furthermore,it illustrates the great effects ofsteric hindered bridge ethene on the performance of diarylethene series dyes.

Abstract:Organic photochromic materials based on diarylethenes and their derivatives have been intensively investigated from fundamental research to technological applications. This review briefly presents the latest advances in photochromic polymers containing diarylethenes and their derivatives. Polymer matrices doped with diarylethene derivatives and diarylethene electroactive polymers will also be included. The new and significant research in the field of photochromic diarylethenes polymers is highlighted. Their design and preparation methods, various properties and possible applications are briefly discussed.

Abstract:A novel photochromic compound 2 based on spirooxazine and ferrocene residue was synthesized by esterification reaction of 9'-hydroxy spirooxazine and ferrocene carboxylic acid in the presence of DCC. Its structure was characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, IR, HRMS, and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The UV measurement show that compound 2 has good photochromic properties in several organic solvents and good fatigue resistance property. The special property in dichloromethane was proved to be caused by acidichromism when irradiated with high pressure Hg lamp without ice bath. The photochromic property of compound 2 in solid PMMA thin film was also studied. In the acidic condition, or under irradiation with high pressure Hg lamp without ice bath, the dichloromethane solution of compound 2 exhibit a good fluorescence. Additionally, compound 2 show a good reversibility of the redox, which is determined by CV. Ferrocene derivatives have the property of absorbing light, and this property may be helpful to extend the fatigue life of photochromic compounds. Besides, the new compound may posses photo-electromagnetic property owing to the existence of metal ion.
Photochromic fulgides and spirooxazines: Mechanism and substituent effect on photoreactions

Abstract:Molecular design, synthesis and photochromic properties of spirooxazines and fulgides are described. In the case of fulgides, the change of the substituents may lead to different photochromic properties and different photoreactions of this kind of compounds. In photochromic process of pyrryl-substituted fulgides, the excited singlet state is the main species, but the excited triplet state is also involved. However, no excited triplet state has been observed in cyclization of aryl-substituted fulgides. In the case of spirooxazines, the substituents at 2'-position have great effect on the formation of photoproduct and on the mechanism of photoreaction. The increase of steric hindrance of the 2'-position substituent gives rise to the decrease of the quantum yield for the formation of photochromic merocyanine (PMC) and the increase of the relative quantum yield for the charge separated twist intermediate (CT).

Abstract:Organic photochromic materials have received considerable attention because of their potential for photonic applications, especially for fast and high density data storage. In 2000, Chemical Reviews published a special issue on photochromic materials including a review about the properties and applications of diarylethene photochromic compounds. Since then much impressive progress has been made in this area. Various new diarylethene derivatives have been prepared and examined. The tutorial review presented herein describes developments in diarylethene-based molecular switches made in the last three years. In addition, the synthetic aspects of diarylethene photochromic compounds, which are important issues and neglected in most previous reviews, have been included.

Abstract:Abstract Inorganic photochromic materials, as emerging photoresponsive materials, have attracted unparalleled interest because of their potential applications in various photoactive devices such as smart windows, optical memories, and photochromic decorations. Over the past decades, great research efforts have been focused on further development of high‐performance photochromic materials, revealing the underlying physical mechanism as well as exploring new advanced applications. However, significant challenges still exist in achieving large photochromic contrast, realizing color‐tunable response, and confirming the detailed photochromic processes. In this review, the latest progress of inorganic photochromic materials is summarized from the aspects of the advance of new materials, the mechanism of photochromism, the techniques for evaluating and revealing photochromism, and the methods for regulating photochromic behavior. The emerging applications of photochromic materials for optical information storage, photocatalysis, optical anti‐counterfeiting, radiation dosimetry and so on are also discussed. The perspectives and challenges of photochromic materials in terms of practical applications are presented. This review aims to provide fundamentals about the mechanism, properties and applications of inorganic photochromic materials and promote the application of photochromic materials in various optical devices.

Abstract:Photosensitive materials are one of the most important materials in modern society which are widely used in many fileds such as architecture,information,illumination,and automobile.Among various photosensitive materials,inorganic photochromic materials have long been favored because of their outstanding photographic,electronic and magnetic properties and much attention have been paid in these years.These materials mainly include polyoxometalate,transition metal oxide,metal halide,and metal azide.Due to the difficulties of molecular modification and tailoring for inorganic materials,hybrid photosensitive materials combined by inorganic and organic photosensitive materials have been drawing more and more attention,among which inorganic/polymer hybrid materials are most popular.Hybrid photosensitive material is an important research direction and will exhibit extensive application perspective.

Abstract:Acidichromism of four photochromic spirooxazine compounds (SP) were investigated systematically. When hydroxyl group is introduced on the naphtho ring of spirooxazine, the spirooxazine compounds are found to have acidichromic properties in both acidic and basic solutions. Substituent effect on the absorption maximum of acidichromic products has been discussed. A comprehensive discussion of acidichromic, photochromic and thermochromic processes is included.

Abstract:Organic photochromic molecules are well established as colorants in the manufacture of niche products, providing striking colour change effects when irradiated with light. This paper describes the industrially important classes of photochromic dye in terms of their development and chemistries, the applications in which their photochromism is employed commercially, and the technical features behind their success. Photochromic systems form the subject of much industrially funded research into nascent high‐tech applications that have the potential to become the most commercially significant outlets for photochromic dyes. Those types being scrutinised are therefore also discussed along with the directions in which the industrial use of photochromic colorants may take.

Abstract:A new strategy has been developed to synthesize difurylperhydrocyclopentene derivatives. The compound displays reversible photochromism in solution and thin-film. The results show that furan is superior to thiophene in terms of strong fluorescence, higher photocyclization conversion and cyclization quantum yield, as well as better fatigue resistance. Owing to the molecule being derived absolutely from C, H, and O atoms, the compound exhibits no cytotoxicity, which enables it to potentially serve as a biodegradable and biorenewable material for in vivo applications.

Abstract:Organic/polymeric semiconductors are promising materials for image sensors. This review has outlined the advantages of organic/polymeric image sensor materials and commented on a few typical systems such as conjugated polymer/C60 composites, conjugated polymer/inorganic semi- conductor nano-crystal composites, phthalocyanines and biomaterials. The effect of electronic structure of donor/acceptor, photoinduced charge transfer process and phase separation behavior in composite materials on the photosensitivity of related sensors has been discussed. The pivotal scientific problems that desiderated to be solved are demonstrated at the end of this review.

Abstract:Photochromic polymer is defined as a series of materials based on photochromic units in polymer chains, which produces reversible color changes under irradiation with a particular wavelength. Currently, as the research progresses, it shows increasing potential applications in various fields, such as anti-counterfeiting, information storage, super-resolution imaging, and logic gates. However, there is a paucity of published reviews on the topic of photochromic polymers. Herein, this review discusses and summarizes the research progress and prospects of such materials, mainly summarizing the basic mechanisms, classification, and applications of azobenzene, spiropyran, and diarylethene photochromic polymers. Moreover, 3-dimensional (3D) printable photochromic polymers are worthy to be summarized specifically because of its innovative approach for practical application; meanwhile, the developing 3D printing technology has shown increasing potential opportunities for better applications. Finally, the current challenges and future directions of photochromic polymer materials are summarized.

Photochromic Single-Component Organic Fulgide Ferroelectric with Photo-Triggered Polarization Response

Abstract:Organic photochromic compounds have been widely investigated for optical memory storage and switches. Very recently, we pioneeringly discovered optical control of ferroelectric polarization switching in organic photochromic salicylaldehyde Schiff base and diarylethene derivatives, differently from the traditional ferroelectrics. However, the study of such intriguing photo-triggered ferroelectrics is still in its infancy and relatively scarce. In this manuscript, we synthesized a pair of new organic single-component fulgide isomers, (E and Z)-3-(1-(4-(tert-butyl)phenyl)ethylidene)-4-(propan-2-ylidene)dihydrofuran-2,5-dione (1E and 1Z). They undergo prominent photochromism from yellow to red. Interestingly, only polar 1E has been proven to be ferroelectric, while the centrosymmetric 1Z does not meet the basic requirement for ferroelectricity. Besides, experimental evidence shows that the Z-form can be converted to the E-form by light irradiation. More importantly, the ferroelectric domains of 1E can be manipulated by light in the absence of an electric field, benefiting from the remarkable photoisomerization. 1E also adopts good fatigue resistance to the photocyclization reaction. As far as we know, this is the first example of organic fulgide ferroelectric reported with photo-triggered ferroelectric polarization response. This work has developed a new system for studying photo-triggered ferroelectrics and would also provide an expected perspective on developing ferroelectrics for optical applications in trap future.
