Abstract:Mechanical equipments are widely used in various industrial applications. Generally working in severe conditions, mechanical equipments are subjected to progressive deterioration of their state. The mechanical failures account for more than 60% of breakdowns of the system. Therefore, the identification of impending mechanical fault is crucial to prevent the system from malfunction. This paper discusses the most recent progress in the mechanical condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. Excellent work is introduced from the aspects of the fault mechanism research, signal processing and feature extraction, fault reasoning research and equipment development. An overview of some of the existing methods for signal processing and feature extraction is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are discussed. The review result suggests that the intelligent information fusion based mechanical fault diagnosis expert system with self-learning and self-updating abilities is the future research trend for the condition monitoring fault diagnosis of mechanical equipments.

Abstract:The method of steady-state condition monitoring and fault detection of gas turbine was proposed and tested.This part is critical to the aircraft healthy management system.Firstly,the linear state-space model containing the health parameters was setup here.Secondly,the non-measurement performance parameters were estimated accurately.Then,a bank of Kalman filters were used for fault detection and isolation.At last,a platform containing software and hardware was setup for the condition monitoring and fault detection.The results show that this platform works well and easy to operate.

Abstract:A multi-sensor and multi-parameter condition monitoring and fault diagnosis system is designed and implemented for modern manufacturing systems, such as flexible manufacturing cells and systems. The overall hardware and software designs of this system, together with the functional sub-systems, are presented. This implemented system monitors power, vibration, temperature and pressure of the drives and spindles with a total of 72 diagnostic features and uses a cost-weighted function to identify diagnostic solutions with the lowest cost. Condition monitoring, data acquisition, knowledge acquisition and representation, as well as the diagnostic reasoning strategy of the knowledge-base system are presented in detail. The system was implemented and tested in a textile plant with satisfactory results.

Abstract:A condition monitoring and fault diagnosis system for heavy duty diesel engines used in off-highway vehicles is developed. Via this system, the vibration, rotating speed or angle, temperature and pressure signals can be collected simultaneously at a high speed. The software is developed using virtual instrument technique. The system provides various types of signal analysis methods, and manual and intelligent diagnosis functions. Its performance is validated in engineering practice. The system can be generalized for monitoring and diagnosis of various reciprocating engines.

Therefore, the equipment fault diagnosis and prediction currently becomes one of the hottest research topics. This paper summarizes and reviews the research status in this field from three aspects, namely, the basic research of the maintenance theory, the condition-based maintenance and safety research and the research of the fault diagnosis software system, and summarily sets forth the applied concept, methods and technology, and predicts the future trend of development.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of industrial production systems, accurate fault diagnosis is essential to ensure safe and efficient system operation. However, due to changes in production demands, dynamic process adjustments, and complex external environmental disturbances, multiple operating conditions frequently arise during production. The multi-condition characteristics pose significant challenges to traditional fault diagnosis methods. In this context, multi-condition fault diagnosis has gradually become a key area of research, attracting extensive attention from both academia and industry. This paper aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive review of existing research in the field. Firstly, the mathematical definition of the problem is presented, followed by an overview of the current research status. Subsequently, the existing literature is reviewed and categorized from the perspectives of single-model and multi-model approaches. In addition, standard evaluation metrics and typical real-world application scenarios are summarized and analyzed. Finally, the key challenges and prospects in the field are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:Nonlinear and time-varying characteristics of mechanical systems may lead to the variation of fault modes which makes it hard to be accurately evaluated. To fulfill this requirement, the authors propose a time-domain signal-driven mechanical system state description method in this research. Based on the theory of stochastic subspace identification, an abnormal evaluation model is established to investigate the performance of mechanical systems. First, by constructing the projection matrix of the established Hankel matrixes from the given time series at different times, the system state matrix can be obtained. Subsequently, based on the eigenvectors of the reference state matrix, the testing samples can be decomposed. Finally, by calculating the difference between the reference and testing signal, the anomaly can be acquired, and the quantitative evaluation of the health of the mechanical system can also be realized. The proposed method is validated in bearing performance degradation, bearing fault diagnosis, and milling tool wear experiments and received positive results. The proposed method, therefore, provides a new possibility for monitoring the service performance of mechanical systems.

Abstract:Machine condition monitoring has become a vital component of maintenance programs in machine intensive industries. Vibration and oil analysis have become the two most commonly used techniques for fault detection and tracking. While these techniques are generally used independently, numerous case studies of machine failures have reported on the benefit of a correlated use. This paper discusses the development of a series of expert systems that, for the first time analyse vibration data in conjunction with oil and wear debris data for machine health assessment, as well as remaining lifetime estimation. The reports of previous research regarding the complimenting and sometimes contradicting nature of the correlation are discussed and compared to the results of the research outcomes.

Abstract:Abstract Machinery will fail due to complex and tough working conditions. It is necessary to apply reliable monitoring technology to ensure their safe operation. Condition-based maintenance (CBM) has attracted significant interest from the research community in recent years. This paper provides a review on CBM of industrial machineries. Firstly, the development of fault diagnosis systems is introduced systematically. Then, the main types of data in the field of the fault diagnosis are summarized. After that, the commonly used techniques for the signal processing, fault diagnosis, and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction are discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of these existing techniques are explored for some specific applications. Typical fault diagnosis products developed by corporations and universities are surveyed. Lastly, discussions on current developing situation and possible future trends are in the CBM performed.

Abstract:Condition monitoring is a key step to identify the health status of working machinery and establish a necessary maintenance strategy. This paper proposes a novel intelligent system for the online monitoring of the operating conditions of rotating machinery using electrostatic sensors and signal processing techniques. This system is capable of providing simultaneous measurements of rotational speed, angular acceleration, vibration direction and frequency as well as an indication of mechanical wear. These parameters usually contain abundant fault-related information about the rotating machinery, which is to be extracted by detecting the electrostatic charge on the surface of the moving part. The general principle and system design considerations are presented. Preliminary experimental results obtained from laboratory tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the monitoring system.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel approach for mechanical manufacturing system to implement status monitoring and fault diagnosis. The embedded hardware and software framework for terminal device is discussed to ensure high performance, high reliability, high expansibility, low power and small volume. According to the demand of remote status monitoring, the strategy of data transmission and information sharing is applied to provide the analyzing and diagnosing service based on intranet/internet. The artificial intelligent technique is used for information fusion and fault diagnosis of manufacturing system. The proposed approach shows great potential for improving overall production efficiency, while reducing the cost of maintenance.

Abstract:Marine power machinery parts are key equipments in ships. Ships always work in rigorous conditions such as offshore, heavy load, et cetera. Therefore, the failures in marine power machinery would badly threaten the safety of voyages. Keeping marine power machineries running reliably is the guarantee of voyage safety. For the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of marine power machinery system, this study established the systemic condition identification approach for the tribo-system of marine power machinery and developed integrated diagnosis method by combining on-line and off-line ways for marine power machinery. Lastly, the remote fault diagnosis system was developed for practical application in marine power machinery, which consists of monitoring system in the ship, diagnosis system in laboratory centre, and maintenance management & maintenance decision support system.

Abstract:Machines are employed in a wide range of industrial applications. All machines are prone to fatigue, wear, deformation, and other effects while in operation. As a result of these effects, the clearance between mating parts increases, the rotor becomes unbalanced, and the shafts become misaligned, all of which contribute to an increase in vibration. Vibration levels rise, eventually leading to the machine's malfunction or breakdown. The machine's performance and quality have a direct impact on its life and dependability. Equipment condition monitoring and fault diagnostics are standard procedures used by processing and manufacturing facilities to monitor machine availability, performance, and dependability. Monitoring machine vibration for fault identification has been demonstrated to be the most effective way for machinery condition monitoring. Fault diagnosis sets the stage for fault tolerance, dependability, and security, all of which are critical design elements in complex engineering systems. This paper presents an overview of recent advancements and progress in the philosophy and concepts of condition monitoring, diagnostics, and failure detection. It's critical to have a good bearing condition monitoring and fault detection system in place so that developing bearing defects may be properly identified and analyzed before they cause further damage to the machine. Because higher signal levels are observed in fault cases, vibration analysis provides a suitable foundation for condition monitoring.

Abstract:Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis in modern engineering practices is of great practical significance for improving the quality and productivity, preventing the machinery from damages. In general, this practice consists of two parts: extracting appropriate features from sensor signals and recognizing possible faulty patterns from the features. In order to cope with the complex manufacturing operations and develop a feasible system for real-time application, we proposed three approaches. By defining the marginal energy, a new feature representation emerged, while by real-time learning algorithms with support vector techniques and hidden Markov model representations, a modular software architecture and a new similarity measure were developed for comparison, monitoring, and diagnosis. A novel intelligent computer-based system has been developed and evaluated in over 30 factories and numerous metal stamping processes as an example of manufacturing operations. The real-time operation of this system demonstrated that the proposed system is able to detect abnormal conditions efficiently and effectively resulting in a low-cost, effective approach to real-time monitoring in manufacturing. The related technologies have been transferred to industry, presenting a tremendous impact in current automation practice in Asia and the world.
