Abstract:Abbe’s diffraction limit restricts the resolution of an optical imaging and lithography system. A coherent Rabi oscillation is shown to be able to overcome the diffraction limit in both optical and atom lithography. In previous studies, semiclassical theory is applied, where the driving field is treated as a classical light, and quantum fluctuation is neglected. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuation may reduce the visibility of the superresolution pattern. However, by squeezing the photon number fluctuation, we are able to significantly increase its visibility.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to prepare the superposition of an even coherent state and a vacuum state, which shows strong squeezing. An atom crossing a high Q cavity prepares the field in a superposition of a coherent state and a vacuum state. This field state can be transformed into the superposition of an even coherent state and a vacuum state by another nonresonant atom sent across the cavity.
Superposition of macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in cavity optomechanical system at single-photon level

Abstract: We propose an efficient approach to generate the superposed macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in a two-mode optomechanical system. This can be achieved by introducing a sinusoidal modulation to either the cavity frequencies or the coupling strengths between two cavity modes. The squeezement of the oscillator can be significantly enhanced to 12.16 dB with single photon, once the relative ratio of coupling strength is optimized under proper conditions. Further enhanced squeezing can be obtained by carefully adjusting the system parameters. In terms of the Wigner quasi-probability distribution, we show the squeezed error ellipses and interference fringes of the Yurke-Stoler-type squeezed states, denoting the squeezing and superposition properties. Our state generation scheme show reliable performance and robust resistance to finite environmental fluctuations, which implies applications for both fundamental interest and practical value.

Abstract:We show that squeezing of a nanomechanical mirror can be generated by injecting broad band squeezed vacuum light and laser light into the cavity. We work in the resolved sideband regime. We find that in order to obtain the maximum momentum squeezing of the movable mirror, the squeezing parameter of the input light should be about 1. We can obtain more than 70% squeezing. Besides, for a fixed squeezing parameter, decreasing the temperature of the environment or increasing the laser power increases the momentum squeezing. We find very large squeezing with respect to thermal fluctuations, for instance at 1 mK, the momentum fluctuations go down by a factor more than one hundred.

Abstract:We show how to prepare and directly measure the squeezed states of nanomechanical oscillators. An intense pulse interacts with a dielectric mirror in a cavity. The quadratic coupling between the optical pulse and the oscillator results in the reduction of a quadrature variance of the massive oscillator. Differently from others, the proposed scheme here requires neither any post-action on the optical field nor a preparation of a nonclassical optical field. Depending on the initial temperature of the system, the squeezing of the variance under the vacuum limit can be achieved only by a few repetitive interactions.

Abstract:We investigate the squeezing for a movable mirror in the dissipative optomechanics in which the oscillating mirror modulates both the resonance frequency and the linewidth of the cavity mode. Via feeding a much weaker broadband squeezed vacuum light accompanying the coherent driving laser field into the cavity, the master equation for the cavity-mirror system is derived by following the general reservoir theory based on the density operator in which the reservoir variables are adiabatically eliminated by using the reduced density operator for the system in the interaction picture. When the mirror is weakly coupled to the cavity mode, we find that under the conditions of laser cooling to the ground state, the driven cavity field can effectively perform as a squeezed vacuum reservoir for the movable mirror via utilizing the completely destructive interference of quantum noise, and thus the efficient transfer of squeezing from the light to the movable mirror occurs, which is irrespective of the ratio between the cavity damping rate and the mechanical frequency. When the mirror is moderately coupled to the cavity mode, the photonic excitation can preclude the completely destructive interference of quantum noise, and as a consequence, the mirror deviates from the ideal squeezed state.

Abstract:In a hybrid quantum system composed of two quantum wells placed inside a cavity with a moving end mirror pumped by bichromatic coherent light, we address the formation of squeezed states of a mechanical resonator. The exciton mode and mechanical resonator interact indirectly via microcavity fields. Under the conditions of the generated coupling, we predict squeezing of the mechanical-mode beyond the resolved side-band regime with existing experimental parameters. Finally, we show that the robustness of this squeezing against thermal fluctuations is important for practical applications of such systems.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement in mechanical systems is not only a key signature of macroscopic quantum effects but has wide applications in quantum technologies. Here we propose an effective approach for creating strong steady-state entanglement between two directly coupled mechanical oscillators (or a mechanical oscillator and a microwave resonator) in a modulated optomechanical system. The entanglement is achieved by combining the processes of a cavity cooling and the two-mode parametric interaction, which can surpass the bound on the maximal stationary entanglement from the two-mode parametric interaction. In principle, our proposal allows one to cool the system from an initial thermal state to an entangled state with high purity by a monochromatic driving laser. Also, the obtained entangled state can be used to implement the continuous-variable teleportation with high fidelity. Moreover, our proposal is robust against the thermal fluctuations of the mechanical modes under the condition of strong optical pumping.

Abstract:Squeezed mechanical states are a valuable tool for quantum sensing and error correction in quantum computing, and a pivotal platform for tests of fundamental physics. Recently, solid state mechanical oscillators have been prepared in squeezed states using parametric interactions in both the microwave and optical regimes. It has long been predicted that a fast measurement rate comparable to the mechanical resonance frequency can prepare the oscillator under measurement into a quantum squeezed state. Despite decades of effort, this straightforward protocol is yet to be demonstrated in the quantum regime. Here, we use post-processing techniques to demonstrate preparation of a 50 ng GaAs cantilever in a conditional classical squeezed state with a minimum uncertainty (0.28 plus/minus 0.18) dB above (1.07 plus/minus 0.04 times) the zero point fluctuations, 3 orders of magnitude closer to the quantum regime in variance than the previous record. This paves the way to real-time measurement-based preparation of macroscopic oscillators in quantum squeezed states, and can be adapted to mechanical systems as large as the kg-scale test masses of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).

Abstract:Optomechanics and electromechanics have made it possible to prepare macroscopic mechanical oscillators in their quantum ground states, in quadrature squeezed states, and in entangled states of motion. In addition to coaxing ever larger and more tangible objects into a regime of quantum behavior, this new capability has encouraged ideas of using mechanical oscillators in the processing and communication of quantum information and as precision force sensors operating beyond the standard quantum limit. But the effectively linear interaction between motion and light or electricity precludes access to the broader class of quantum states of motion, such as cat states or energy squeezed states. Indeed, early optomechanical proposals noted the possibility to escape this restriction by creating strong quadratic coupling of motion to light. Although there have been experimental demonstrations of quadratically coupled optomechanical systems, these have not yet accessed nonclassical states of motion. Here we create nonclassical states by quadratically coupling motion to the energy levels of a Cooper-pair box (CPB) qubit. By monitoring the qubit's transition frequency, we detect the oscillator's phonon distribution rather than its position. Through microwave frequency drives that change both the state of the oscillator and qubit, we then dissipatively stabilize the oscillator in a state with a large mean phonon number of 43 and sub-Poissonian number fluctuations of approximately 3. In this energy squeezed state we observe a striking feature of the quadratic coupling: the recoil of the mechanical oscillator caused by qubit transitions, closely analogous to the vibronic transitions in molecules.
Dissipative bosonic squeezing via frequency modulation and its application in optomechanics

Abstract:The dissipative squeezing mechanism is an effective method to generate the strong squeezing, which is important in the precision metrology. Here, we propose a practical method to achieve arbitrary bosonic squeezing via introducing frequency modulation into the coupled harmonic resonator model. We analyze the effect of frequency modulation and give the analytical and numerical squeezing results, respectively. To measure the accurate dynamic squeezing in our proposal, we give a more general defination of the relative squeezing degree. Finally, the proposed method is extended to generate the strong mechanical squeezing (>3 dB) in a practical optomechanical system consisting of a graphene mechanical oscillator coupled to a superconducting microwave cavity. The result indicates that the strong mechanical squeezing can be effectively achieved even when the mechanical oscillator is not initially in its ground state. The proposed method expands the study on nonclassical state and does not need the bichromatic microwave driving technology.
Strong squeezing of microwave output fields via reservoir-engineered cavity magnomechanics

Abstract:We show how to achieve strong squeezing of a microwave output field by reservoir engineering a cavity magnomechanical system, consisting of a microwave cavity, a magnon mode, and a mechanical vibration mode. The magnon mode is simultaneously driven by two microwave fields at the blue and red sidebands associated with the vibration mode. The two-tone drive induces a squeezed magnonic reservoir for the intracavity field, leading to a squeezed cavity mode due to the cavity-magnon state swapping, which further yields a squeezed cavity output field. The squeezing of the output field is stationary and substantial using currently available parameters in cavity magnomechanics. The work indicates the potential of the cavity magnomechanical system in preparing squeezed microwave fields, and may find promising applications in quantum information science and quantum metrology.

Strong Spin Squeezing Induced by Weak Squeezing of Light inside a Cavity

Abstract:We propose a simple method for generating spin squeezing of atomic ensembles in a Floquet cavity subject to a weak, detuned two-photon driving. We demonstrate that {\it the weak squeezing of light inside the cavity can, counterintuitively, induce strong spin squeezing}. This is achieved by exploiting the anti-Stokes scattering process of a photon pair interacting with an atom. Specifically, {\it one photon of the photon pair is scattered into the cavity resonance by absorbing partially the energy of the other photon whose remaining energy excites the atom}. The scattering, combined with a Floquet sideband, provides an alternative mechanism to implement Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing. Our proposal does {\it not} need multiple classical and cavity-photon drivings applied to atoms in ensembles, and therefore its experimental feasibility is greatly improved compared to other cavity-based schemes. As an example, we demonstrate a possible implementation with a superconducting resonator coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy electronic-spin ensemble.

Response of a mechanical oscillator in an optomechanical cavity driven by a finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum excitation

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically investigate the displacement and momentum fluctuations spectra of the movable mirror in a standard optomechanical system driven by a finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum light accompanying a coherent laser field. Two cases in which the squeezed vacuum is generated by degenerated and non-degenerate parametric oscillators (DPO and NDPO) are considered. We find that for the case of finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum injection, the two spectra exhibit unique features, which strongly differ from those of broadband squeezing excitation. In particular, the spectra exhibit a three-peaked and a four-peaked structure, respectively, for the squeezing injection from DPO and NDPO. Besides, some anomalous characteristics of the spectra such as squeezing-induced pimple, hole burning, and dispersive profile are found to be highly sensitive to the squeezing parameters and the temperature of the mirror. We also evaluate the mean-square fluctuations in position and momentum quadratures of the movable mirror and analyze the influence of the squeezing parameters of the input field on the mechanical squeezing. It will be shown that the parameters of driven squeezed vacuum affects the squeezing. We find the optimal mechanical squeezing is achievable via finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum injection which is affected by the intensity of squeezed vacuum. We also show that the phase of incident squeezed vacuum determines whether position or momentum squeezing occurs. Our proposed scheme not only provides a feasible experimental method to detect and characterize squeezed light by optomechanical systems, but also suggests a way for controllable transfer of squeezing from an optical field to a mechanical oscillator.

Abstract:We consider a hybrid optomechanical system which is composed of the atomic ensemble and a standard optomechanical cavity driven by the periodically modulated external laser field. We investigate the asymptotic behaviors of Heisenberg operator first moments and clearly show the approaching process between the exact numerical results and analytical solutions. Based on the specific modulation forms of external driving and effective optomechanical coupling, we discuss in detail the atom-mirror entanglement enhancement, respectively. Compared with the constant driving regime, the entanglement can be greatly enhanced with more loose cavity decay rate and is more resistant to the thermal fluctuations of the mechanical bath. The desired form of periodically modulated effective optomechanical coupling can be precisely engineered by the external driving modulation components which can be derived analytically via Laplace transform. Meanwhile, resorting to the quantum interference mechanism caused by atomic ensemble and modulating the external driving appropriately, the mechanical squeezing induced by the periodic modulation can be generated successfully in the unresolved regime.
Dynamically enhancing qubit-photon interactions with anti-squeezing

Abstract:The interaction strength of an oscillator to a qubit grows with the oscillator's vacuum field fluctuations. The well known degenerate parametric oscillator has revived interest in the regime of strongly detuned squeezing, where its eigenstates are squeezed Fock states. Owing to these amplified field fluctuations, it was recently proposed that squeezing this oscillator would dynamically boost qubit-photon interactions. In a superconducting circuit experiment, we observe a two-fold increase in the dispersive interaction between a qubit and an oscillator at 5.5 dB of squeezing, demonstrating in-situ dynamical control of qubit-photon interactions. This work initiates the experimental coupling of oscillators of squeezed photons to qubits, and cautiously motivates their dissemination in experimental platforms seeking enhanced interactions.

Quadrature squeezing enhances Wigner negativity in a mechanical Duffing oscillator

Abstract:Generating macroscopic non-classical quantum states is a long-standing challenge in physics. Anharmonic dynamics is an essential ingredient to generate these states, but for large mechanical systems, the effect of the anharmonicity tends to become negligible compared to decoherence. As a possible solution to this challenge, we propose to use a motional squeezed state as a resource to effectively enhance the anharmonicity. We analyze the production of negativity in the Wigner distribution of a quantum anharmonic resonator initially in a squeezed state. We find that initial squeezing enhances the rate at which negativity is generated. We also analyze the effect of two common sources of decoherence, namely energy damping and dephasing, and find that the detrimental effects of energy damping are suppressed by strong squeezing. In the limit of large squeezing, which is needed for state-of-the-art systems, we find good approximations for the Wigner function. Our analysis is significant for current experiments attempting to prepare macroscopic mechanical systems in genuine quantum states. We provide an overview of several experimental platforms featuring nonlinear behaviors and low levels of decoherence. In particular, we discuss the feasibility of our proposal with carbon nanotubes and levitated nanoparticles.

Abstract:We analyze the generation of spin-squeezed states via coupling of three-level atoms to an optical cavity and continuous quantum measurement of the transmitted cavity field in order to monitor the evolution of the atomic ensemble. Using analytical treatment and microscopic simulations of the dynamics, we show that one can achieve significant spin squeezing, favorably scaling with the number of atoms . However, contrary to some previous literature, we clarify that it is not possible to obtain Heisenberg scaling without the continuous feedback that is proposed in optimal approaches. In fact, in the adiabatic cavity removal approximation and large limit, we find the scaling behavior for spin squeezing and for the corresponding protocol duration. These results can be obtained only by considering the curvature of the Bloch sphere, since linearizing the collective spin operators tangentially to its equator yields inaccurate predictions. With full simulations, we characterize how spin-squeezing generation depends on the system parameters and departs from the bad cavity regime, by gradually mixing with cavity-filling dynamics until metrological advantage is lost. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this spin-squeezing protocol to state-of-the-art optical clocks.

Squeezed states of magnons and phonons in cavity magnomechanics

Abstract:We show how to create quantum squeezed states of magnons and phonons in a cavity magnomechanical system. The magnons are embodied by a collective motion of a large number of spins in a macroscopic ferrimagnet, and couple to cavity microwave photons and phonons (vibrational modes of the ferrimagnet) via the magnetic dipole interaction and magnetostrictive interaction, respectively. The cavity is driven by a weak squeezed vacuum field generated by a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier, which is essential to get squeezed states of the magnons and phonons. We show that the magnons can be prepared in a squeezed state via the cavity-magnon beamsplitter interaction, and by further driving the magnon mode with a strong red-detuned microwave field, the phonons are squeezed. We show optimal parameter regimes for obtaining large squeezing of the magnons and phonons, which are robust against temperature and could be realized with experimentally reachable parameters.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize the two-axis countertwisting spin-squeezing Hamiltonian inside an optical cavity with the aid of phase-locked atom-photon coupling. By careful analysis and extensive simulation, we demonstrate that our scheme is robust against dissipation caused by cavity loss and atomic spontaneous emission, and it can achieve significantly higher squeezing than one-axis twisting. We further show how our idea can be extended to generate two-mode spin-squeezed states in two coupled cavities. Because of its easy implementation and high tunability, our scheme is experimentally realizable with current technologies.
