Abstract:We investigate the performances of quantum coherence and multipartite entanglement close to the quantum critical point of a one-dimensional anisotropic spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain by employing the real-space quantum renormalization group approach. It is shown that the quantum criticality of XXZ spin chain can be revealed by the singular behaviors of the first derivatives of renormalized quantum coherence and multipartite entanglement in the thermodynamics limit. Moreover, we find the renormalized quantum coherence and multipartite entanglement obey certain universal exponential-type scaling laws in the vicinity of the quantum critical point of XXZ spin chain.

Abstract:The open XXZ spin chain with the anisotropy parameter $\Delta=-\frac12$ and diagonal boundary magnetic fields that depend on a parameter $x$ is studied. For real $x>0$, the exact finite-size ground-state eigenvalue of the spin-chain Hamiltonian is explicitly computed. In a suitable normalisation, the ground-state components are characterised as polynomials in $x$ with integer coefficients. Linear sum rules and special components of this eigenvector are explicitly computed in terms of determinant formulas. These results follow from the construction of a contour-integral solution to the boundary quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations associated with the $R$-matrix and diagonal $K$-matrices of the six-vertex model. A relation between this solution and a weighted enumeration of totally-symmetric alternating sign matrices is conjectured.

Exactly solvable subspaces of non-integrable spin chains with boundaries and quasiparticle interactions

Abstract:We propose two new strategies to construct a family of non-integrable spin chains with exactly solvable subspace based on the idea of quasiparticle excitations from the matrix product vacuum state. The first one allows the boundary generalization, while the second one makes it possible to construct the solvable subspace with interacting quasiparticles. Each generalization is realized by removing the assumption made in the conventional method, which is the frustration-free condition or the local orthogonality, respectively. We found that the structure of embedded equally-spaced energy spectrum is not violated by the diagonal boundaries, as log as quasiparticles are non-interacting in the invariant subspace. On the other hand, we show that there exists a one-parameter family of non-integrable Hamiltonians which show perfectly embedded energy spectrum of the integrable spin chain. Surprisingly, the embedded energy spectrum does change by varying the free parameter of the Hamiltonian. The constructed eigenstates in the solvable subspace are the candidates of quantum many-body scar states, as they show up in the middle of the energy spectrum and have entanglement entropies expected to obey the sub-volume law.

Scaling of the Formation Probabilities and Universal Boundary Entropies in the Quantum XY Spin Chain

Abstract:We calculate exactly the probability to find the ground state of the XY chain in a given spin configuration in the transverse $\sigma^z$-basis. By determining finite-volume corrections to the probabilities for a wide variety of configurations, we obtain the universal Boundary Entropy at the critical point. The latter is a benchmark of the underlying Boundary Conformal Field Theory characterizing each quantum state. To determine the scaling of the probabilities, we prove a theorem that expresses, in a factorized form, the eigenvalues of a sub-matrix of a circulant matrix as functions of the eigenvalues of the original matrix. Finally, the Boundary Entropies are computed by exploiting a generalization of the Euler-MacLaurin formula to non-differentiable functions. It is shown that, in some cases, the spin configuration can flow to a linear superposition of Cardy states. Our methods and tools are rather generic and can be applied to all the periodic quantum chains which map to free-fermionic Hamiltonians.

Thermodynamics of a Spin-12Xyz Heisenberg Chain with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of an XYZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which describes the low-energy behaviors of a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosonic model in the deep insulating region. The entropy and the specific heat are calculated numerically by the quasi-exact transfer-matrix renormalization group. In particular, in the limit $U^\prime/U\rightarrow\infty$, our model is exactly solvable and thus serves as a benchmark for our numerical method. From our data, we find that for $U^\prime/U>1$ a quantum phase transition between an (anti)ferromagnetic phase and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase occurs at a finite $\theta$, while for $U^\prime/U<1$ a transition between a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase happens at $\theta=0$. A refined ground-state phase diagram is then deduced from their low-temperature behaviors. Our findings provide an alternative way to detect those distinguishable phases experimentally.

Abstract:We study the entanglement structure and the topological edge states of the ground state of the spin-1/2 XXZ model with bond alternation. We employ parity-density matrix renormalization group with periodic boundary conditions. The finite-size scaling of Rényi entropies $S_2$ and $S_\infty$ are used to construct the phase diagram of the system. The phase diagram displays three possible phases: Haldane type (an example of symmetry protected topological ordered phases), Classical Dimer and Néel phases, the latter bounded by two continuous quantum phase transitions. The entanglement and non-locality in the ground state are studied and quantified by the entanglement convertibility. We found that, at small spatial scales, the ground state is not convertible within the topological Haldane dimer phase. The phenomenology we observe can be described in terms of correlations between edge states. We found that the entanglement spectrum also exhibits a distinctive response in the topological phase: the effective rank of the reduced density matrix displays a specifically large "susceptibility" in the topological phase. These findings support the idea that although the topological order in the ground state cannot be detected by local inspection, the ground state response at local scale can tell the topological phases apart from the non-topological phases.

Abstract:By using a set of gauge transformations (face-vertex correspondence relations), the XXZ spin chain with both transverse and longitudinal magnetic boundary fields is studied. The corresponding reflection boundary matrices therefore have non-diagonal elements. The Bethe ansatz equations, the eigenvalues and the eigenstates of the transfer matrix and the Hamiltonian of the system are obtained in the framework of algebraic Bethe ansatz method. The ground states for different couplings are derived.

Abstract:We derive by the traditional algebraic Bethe ansatz method the Bethe equations for the general open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms under the Nepomechie constraint [J. Phys. A 37 (2004), 433-440, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0304092" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0304092">arXiv:hep-th/0304092</a>]. The technical difficulties due to the breaking of $\mathsf{U}(1)$ symmetry and the absence of a reference state are overcome by an algebraic construction where the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb Hamiltonian is realised in a new $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$-invariant spin chain involving infinite-dimensional Verma modules on the edges [J. High Energy Phys. 2022 (2022), no. 11, 016, 64 pages, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.12772" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.12772">arXiv:2207.12772</a>]. The equivalence of the two Hamiltonians is established by proving Schur-Weyl duality between $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. In this framework, the Nepomechie condition turns out to have a simple algebraic interpretation in terms of quantum group fusion rules.

Abstract:Exact solution of the quantum integrable $$ {D}_2^{(2)} $$ spin chain with generic integrable boundary fields is constructed. It is found that the transfer matrix of this model can be factorized as the product of those of two open staggered anisotropic XXZ spin chains. Based on this identity, the eigenvalues and Bethe ansatz equations of the $$ {D}_2^{(2)} $$ model are derived via off-diagonal Bethe ansatz.

Abstract:We consider the integrable XXZ model with special open boundary conditions that renders its Hamiltonian ${SU(2)}_q$ symmetric, and the one-dimensional quantum Ising model with four different boundary conditions. We show that for each boundary condition the Ising quantum chain is exactly given by the Minimal Model of integrable lattice theory $LM(3, 4)$. This last theory is obtained as the result of the quantum group reduction of the XXZ model at anisotropy $\Delta=(q + q^{-1})/2=\sqrt{2}/2$, with a number of sites in the latter defined by the type of boundary conditions.

Abstract:The long-range entanglement dynamics of an one-dimensional spin-1/2 anisotropic XXZ model are studied using the method of the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group. The long-range entanglement can be generated when a local quench on one of boundary bonds is performed in the system. The anisotropic interaction has a strong influence both on the maximal value of long-range entanglement and the time of reaching the maximum long-range entanglement. The local coupling has a notable impact on the long-range entanglement, but it can be neglected in the time of reaching the maximal long-range entanglement.

Boundary effect and quantum phases in spin chains

Abstract:Boundary effect is a widespread idea in many-body theories. However, it is more of a conceptual notion than a rigorously defined physical quantity. One can quantify the boundary effect by comparing two ground states of the same physical model, which differ only slightly in system size. Here, we analyze the quantity, which we call a boundary effect function, for an XXZ spin-1/2 model using density matrix renormalization group calculations. We find that three quantum phases of the model manifest as different functional forms of the boundary effect function. As a result, the quantum phase transition of the model is associated with a nonanalytic change of the boundary effect function. This work thus provides and concretizes a novel perspective on the relationship between bulk and boundary properties of ground states.

Determinant representations of spin-operator matrix elements in the XX spin chain and their applications

Abstract:For the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XX model with either periodic or open boundary conditions, it is shown by using a fermionic approach that the matrix element of the spin operator $S^-_j$ ($S^-_{j}S^+_{j'}$) between two eigenstates with numbers of excitations $n$ and $n+1$ ($n$ and $n$) can be expressed as the determinant of an appropriate $(n+1)\times (n+1)$ matrix whose entries involve the coefficients of the canonical transformations diagonalizing the model. In the special case of a homogeneous periodic XX chain, the matrix element of $S^-_j$ reduces to a variant of the Cauchy determinant that can be evaluated analytically to yield a factorized expression. The obtained compact representations of these matrix elements are then applied to two physical scenarios: (i) Nonlinear optical response of molecular aggregates, for which the determinant representation of the transition dipole matrix elements between eigenstates provides a convenient way to calculate the third-order nonlinear responses for aggregates from small to large sizes compared with the optical wavelength, and (ii) real-time dynamics of an interacting Dicke model consisting of a single bosonic mode coupled to a one-dimensional XX spin bath. In this setup, full quantum calculation up to $N\leq 16$ spins for vanishing intrabath coupling shows that the decay of the reduced bosonic occupation number approaches a finite plateau value (in the long-time limit) that depends on the ratio between the number of excitations and the total number of spins. Our results can find useful applications in various "system-bath" systems, with the system part inhomogeneously coupled to an interacting XX chain.

Exact spectrum of the XXZ open spin chain from the q-Onsager algebra representation theory

Abstract:The transfer matrix of the XXZ open spin-1/2 chain with general integrable boundary conditions and generic anisotropy parameter (q is not a root of unity and |q|=1) is diagonalized using the representation theory of the q-Onsager algebra. Similarly to the Ising and superintegrable chiral Potts models, the complete spectrum is expressed in terms of the roots of a characteristic polynomial of degree d=2^N. The complete family of eigenstates are derived in terms of rational functions defined on a discrete support which satisfy a system of coupled recurrence relations. In the special case of linear relations between left and right boundary parameters for which Bethe-type solutions are known to exist, our analysis provides an alternative derivation of the results by Nepomechie et al. and Cao et al.. In the latter case the complete family of eigenvalues and eigenstates splits in two sets, each associated with a characteristic polynomial of degree $d< 2^N$. Numerical checks performed for small values of $N$ support the analysis.

Abstract:In canonical quantum gravity, the presence of spatial boundaries naturally leads to a boundary quantum states, representing quantum boundary conditions for the bulk fields. As a consequence, quantum states of the bulk geometry needs to be upgraded to wave-functions valued in the boundary Hilbert space: the bulk become quantum operator acting on boundary states. We apply this to loop quantum gravity and describe spin networks with 2d boundary as wave-functions mapping bulk holonomies to spin states on the boundary. This sets the bulk-boundary relation in a clear mathematical framework, which allows to define the boundary density matrix induced by a bulk spin network states after tracing out the bulk degrees of freedom. We ask the question of the bulk reconstruction and prove a boundary-to-bulk universal reconstruction procedure, to be understood as a purification of the mixed boundary state into a pure bulk state. We further perform a first investigation in the algebraic structure of induced boundary density matrices and show how correlations between bulk excitations, i.e. quanta of 3d geometry, get reflected into the boundary density matrix.
