Abstract:We study the real-time domain-wall dynamics near a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional anisotropic ferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain. By numerical simulation, we find that the domain wall is dynamically stable in the Heisenberg-Ising model. Near the quantum critical point, the width of the domain wall diverges as (Delta-1)(-1/2).

Abstract:Through numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we demonstrate that magnetic chains with uniaxial anisotropy support stable structures, separating ferromagnetic domains of opposite magnetization. These structures, domain walls in a quantum system, are shown to remain stable if they interact with a spin wave. We find that a domain wall transmits the longitudinal component of the spin excitations only. Our results suggests that continuous, classical spin models described by LLG equation cannot be used to describe spin wave-domain wall interaction in microscopic magnetic systems.
On correlation functions for the open XXZ chain with non-longitudinal boundary fields : the case with a constraint

Abstract:This paper is a continuation of [1], in which a set of matrix elements of local operators was computed for the XXZ spin-1/2 open chain with a particular case of unparallel boundary fields. Here, we extend these results to the more general case in which both fields are non-longitudinal and related by one constraint, allowing for a partial description of the spectrum by usual Bethe equations. More precisely, the complete spectrum and eigenstates can be characterized within the Separation of Variables (SoV) framework. One uses here the fact that, under the constraint, a part of this SoV spectrum can be described via solutions of a usual, homogeneous, TQ-equation, with corresponding transfer matrix eigenstates coinciding with generalized Bethe states. We explain how to generically compute the action of a basis of local operators on such kind of states, and this under the most general boundary condition on the last site of the chain. As a result, we can compute the matrix elements of some of these basis elements in any eigenstate described by the homogenous TQ-equation. Assuming, following a conjecture of Nepomechie and Ravanini, that the ground state itself can be described in this framework, we obtain multiple integral representations for these matrix elements in the half-infinite chain limit, generalizing those previously obtained in the case of longitudinal boundary fields and in the case of the special boundary conditions considered in [1].

Exact spectrum of the XXZ open spin chain from the q-Onsager algebra representation theory

Abstract:The transfer matrix of the XXZ open spin-1/2 chain with general integrable boundary conditions and generic anisotropy parameter (q is not a root of unity and |q|=1) is diagonalized using the representation theory of the q-Onsager algebra. Similarly to the Ising and superintegrable chiral Potts models, the complete spectrum is expressed in terms of the roots of a characteristic polynomial of degree d=2^N. The complete family of eigenstates are derived in terms of rational functions defined on a discrete support which satisfy a system of coupled recurrence relations. In the special case of linear relations between left and right boundary parameters for which Bethe-type solutions are known to exist, our analysis provides an alternative derivation of the results by Nepomechie et al. and Cao et al.. In the latter case the complete family of eigenvalues and eigenstates splits in two sets, each associated with a characteristic polynomial of degree $d< 2^N$. Numerical checks performed for small values of $N$ support the analysis.

Abstract:The open XXZ spin chain with the anisotropy parameter $\Delta=-\frac12$ and diagonal boundary magnetic fields that depend on a parameter $x$ is studied. For real $x>0$, the exact finite-size ground-state eigenvalue of the spin-chain Hamiltonian is explicitly computed. In a suitable normalisation, the ground-state components are characterised as polynomials in $x$ with integer coefficients. Linear sum rules and special components of this eigenvector are explicitly computed in terms of determinant formulas. These results follow from the construction of a contour-integral solution to the boundary quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations associated with the $R$-matrix and diagonal $K$-matrices of the six-vertex model. A relation between this solution and a weighted enumeration of totally-symmetric alternating sign matrices is conjectured.

Low-temperature spectrum of the quantum transfer matrix of the XXZ chain in the massless regime

Abstract:The free energy per lattice site of a quantum spin chain in the thermodynamic limit is determined by a single `dominant' Eigenvalue of an associated quantum transfer matrix in the infinite Trotter number limit. For integrable quantum spin chains, related with solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, an appropriate choice of the quantum transfer matrix enables to study its spectrum, e.g.\ by means of the algebraic Bethe Ansatz. In its turn, the knowledge of the full spectrum allows one to study its universality properties such as the appearance of a conformal spectrum in the low-temperature regime. More generally, accessing the full spectrum is a necessary step for deriving thermal form factor series representations of the correlation functions of local operators for the spin chain under consideration. These are statements that have been established by physicists on a heuristic level and that are calling for a rigorous mathematical justification. In this work we implement certain aspects of this programme with the example of the XXZ quantum spin chain in the antiferromagnetic massless regime and in the low-temperature limit. We rigorously establish the existence, uniqueness and characterise the form of the solutions to the non-linear integral equations that are equivalent to the Bethe Ansatz equations for the quantum transfer matrix of this model. This allows us to describe that part of the quantum transfer matrix spectrum that is related to the Bethe Ansatz and that does not collapse to zero in the infinite Trotter number limit. Within the considered part of the spectrum we rigorously identify the dominant Eigenvalue and show that those correlations lengths that diverge in the low-temperature limit are given, to the leading order, by the spectrum of the free Boson $c=1$ conformal field theory. This rigorously establishes a long-standing conjecture present in the physics literature.

Abstract:We derive by the traditional algebraic Bethe ansatz method the Bethe equations for the general open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms under the Nepomechie constraint [J. Phys. A 37 (2004), 433-440, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0304092" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0304092">arXiv:hep-th/0304092</a>]. The technical difficulties due to the breaking of $\mathsf{U}(1)$ symmetry and the absence of a reference state are overcome by an algebraic construction where the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb Hamiltonian is realised in a new $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$-invariant spin chain involving infinite-dimensional Verma modules on the edges [J. High Energy Phys. 2022 (2022), no. 11, 016, 64 pages, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.12772" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.12772">arXiv:2207.12772</a>]. The equivalence of the two Hamiltonians is established by proving Schur-Weyl duality between $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. In this framework, the Nepomechie condition turns out to have a simple algebraic interpretation in terms of quantum group fusion rules.

Boundary phase transitions of two-dimensional quantum critical XXZ model

Abstract:The boundary critical behavior of the two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnetic(AF) XXZ model coupled with either a dangling spin-1/2 XXZ chain or a dangling two-leg ladder on the boundary is studied with the bosonization and renormalization group analysis. A rich boundary phase diagram is obtained in each case. In the dangling chain case, the boundary either develops a long-range AF order in the easy-plane or the easy-axis direction with extraordinary critical behavior, or has a valence bond solid order with ordinary boundary critical behavior. In the case of a dangling two-leg ladder, besides the possible easy-plane or easy-axis AF ordered phases on the boundary with extraordinary critical behavior, the boundary can form a singlet phase with ordinary critical behavior without breaking any symmetry.

Abstract:By using a set of gauge transformations (face-vertex correspondence relations), the XXZ spin chain with both transverse and longitudinal magnetic boundary fields is studied. The corresponding reflection boundary matrices therefore have non-diagonal elements. The Bethe ansatz equations, the eigenvalues and the eigenstates of the transfer matrix and the Hamiltonian of the system are obtained in the framework of algebraic Bethe ansatz method. The ground states for different couplings are derived.

Abstract:An analytic method is proposed to compute the surface energy and elementary excitations of the XXZ spin chain with generic nondiagonal boundary fields. For the gapped case, in some boundary parameter regimes the contributions of the two boundary fields to the surface energy are nonadditive. Such a correlation effect between the two boundaries also depends on the parity of the site number N even in the thermodynamic limit N→∞. For the gapless case, contributions of the two boundary fields to the surface energy are additive due to the absence of long-range correlation in the bulk. Although the U(1) symmetry of the system is broken, exact spinonlike excitations, which obviously do not carry spin-12, are observed. The present method provides a universal procedure to deal with quantum integrable systems either with or without U(1) symmetry.

Abstract:The correlations, entanglement entropy, and fidelity susceptibility are calculated for a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with anisotropic power-law long range interactions by employing the density matrix renormalization group method. In particular, this long-range interaction is assigned to ferromagnetic for transversal components, while it can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic for the longitudinal spin component. Two ground-state phase diagrams are established versus the anisotropy of the interactions which not only changes the phase boundaries of the counterparts with short-range interactions, but also leads to the emergence of exotic phases. We found that the long-range interactions of the z-component results in a Wigner crystal phase, whereas the transversal one may break a continuous symmetry, resulting in a continuous symmetry breaking phase.

Abstract:A bstract Based on its off-diagonal Bethe ansatz solution, we study the thermodynamic limit of the spin- $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 XYZ spin chain with the antiperiodic boundary condition. The key point of our method is that there exist some degenerate points of the crossing parameter η m,l , at which the associated inhomogeneous T − Q relation becomes a homogeneous one. This makes extrapolating the formulae deriving from the homogeneous one to an arbitrary η with O ( N − 2 ) corrections for a large N possible. The ground state energy and elementary excitations of the system are obtained. By taking the trigonometric limit, we also give the results of antiperiodic XXZ spin chain within the gapless region in the thermodynamic limit, which does not have any degenerate points.

Abstract:It is known that for the Heisenberg XXZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain in the critical regime, the scaling limit of the vacuum Bethe roots yields an infinite set of numbers that coincide with the energy spectrum of the quantum mechanical 3D anharmonic oscillator. The discovery of this curious relation, among others, gave rise to the approach referred to as the ODE/IQFT (or ODE/IM) correspondence. Here we consider a multiparametric generalization of the Heisenberg spin chain, which is associated with the inhomogeneous six-vertex model. When quasi-periodic boundary conditions are imposed the lattice system may be explored within the Bethe Ansatz technique. We argue that for the critical spin chain, with a properly formulated scaling limit, the scaled Bethe roots for the ground state are described by second order differential equations, which are multi-parametric generalizations of the Schrödinger equation for the anharmonic oscillator.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamic limit of the anisotropic XYZ spin chain with non-diagonal integrable open boundary conditions. Although the U(1)-symmetry is broken, by using the new parametrization scheme, we exactly obtain the surface energy and the excitation energy of the system, which has solved the difficulty in the inhomogeneous T − Q relation. With the boundary parameters in the regions making the Hamiltonian Hermitian, we have obtained the distribution patterns of the zeros of the eigenvalue of the transfer matrix for the ground state and the excited ones. We find that the surface and excitation energies depend on the parities of sites number N , due to the long-range Neel order in the bulk. The easy-axis and thermodynamic limit for all the regions of boundary parameters are studied. We also obtain the physical quantities in the thermodynamic limit of boundary XXZ model by taking the trigonometric limit.

Abstract:In this paper we compute the overlaps of the ground states for the open spin chains after a change of one of the boundary magnetic fields. It can be considered as the first step toward the study of the boundary quench problem: behaviour of an open spin chain after an abrupt change of one boundary magnetic field.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium dynamics of domain wall initial states in a classical anisotropic Heisenberg chain exhibits a striking coexistence of apparently linear and non-linear behaviours: the propagation and spreading of the domain wall can be captured quantitatively by \textit{linear}, i.e. non-interacting, spin wave theory absent its usual justifications; while, simultaneously, for a wide range of easy-plane anisotropies, emission can take place of stable topological solitons -- a process and objects intrinsically associated with interactions and non-linearities. The easy-axis domain wall only has transient dynamics, the isotropic one broadens diffusively, while the easy-plane one yields a pair of ballistically counter-propagating domain walls which, unusually, broaden \textit{subdiffusively}, their width scaling as $t^{1/3}$.

Abstract:Spin chains are correlated quantum models of great interest in quantum systems and materials exhibiting quasi-one-dimensional magnetic properties. Here, we review results on quantum problems associated with spin chains that are beyond the usual spinon paradigm. Alternatively, we use a representation valid in the thermodynamic limit, N→∞, in terms of the N spin-1/2 physical spins of the spin-1/2XXZ chain in its whole Hilbert space. It was originally introduced for the isotropic point in Carmelo et al. [Phys. Rev. B 92, 165133 (2015)], co-authored by David, and more recently extended to spin anisotropies Δ>1 in Carmelo et al. [Phys. Rev. Res. 5, 043058 (2023)] and J. M. P. Carmelo and P. D. Sacramento [Nucl. Phys. B 974, 115610 (2022); Nucl. Phys. B 997, 116385 (2023) (Corrigendum)]. The physical-spins representation accounts for the spin-1/2XXZ chain’s continuous SUq(2) symmetry parameterized by q=Δ+Δ2−1∈]1,∞] and associated with q-spin Sq. Specifically, in this review we consider two quantum problems that are beyond the spinon representation: (a) Spin Bethe strings of length n that have no spinon representation, contribute to the dynamical properties of the spin-1/2XXZ chain with anisotropy Δ>1 and for n=1,2,3 were experimentally identified and realized in the zigzag materials SrCo2V2O8 and BaCo2V2O8; (b) The spin stiffness associated with ballistic spin transport at arbitrary finite temperature, which involves a huge number of energy eigenstates, many of which are generated in the thermodynamic limit from ground states by an infinite number of elementary processes. As found in Carmelo et al. [Phys. Rev. Res. 5, 043058 (2023)] and J. M. P. Carmelo and P. D. Sacramento [Nucl. Phys. B 974, 115610 (2022); Nucl. Phys. B 997, 116385 (2023) (Corrigendum)], the use of the continuous SUq(2) symmetry reveals that for anisotropy Δ>1 the Bethe strings of length n=1,2,3,... describe a number n of physical-spins Sq=0 singlet pairs that for n>1 are bound within a Sq=0 singlet configuration. Their contribution to the spin dynamical structure factor of both the spin-1/2XXZ chain in a longitudinal magnetic field and the spin chains in SrCo2V2O8 is one of the issues addressed in this paper. In addition, the SUq(2) symmetry imposes that only 2Sq out of the N physical spins are the spin carriers. We also review recent results of J. M. P. Carmelo and P. D. Sacramento [“Diffusive spin transport of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain in the Ising regime at zero magnetic field and finite temperature,” (submitted) (2024)] concerning the vanishing of the contributions to finite-temperature ballistic spin transport at zero magnetic field. Within the physical-spins representation, this merely follows from the absolute value of the elementary spin currents carried by the M=2Sq spin carriers of all finite-Sq states that contribute to the spin stiffness being finite. Finally, we discuss deviations of the zigzag materials BaCo2V2O8 and SrCo2V2O8 from the one-dimensional physics described the spin-1/2XXZ chain due to selective interchain couplings.
