Abstract:A discussion on the development of a 3-D high-resolution computed tomography (CT) system for testing ceramic parts was presented. The system was developed using an improved Feldkamp algorithm to shorten computation time without a perceptible decrease of image quality. The system was updated version of the earlier 2-S CT system, where the linear detector was replaced by a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. The discussion also presented software structure, digital radiography and CT images of the 3-D high-resolution CT system.

Abstract:X-ray Differential phase contrast computed tomography (DPC-CT) is a useful tool to image internal structure of tested sample, especially for low-Z materials. The image quality of the DPC-CT slices is highly relevant to the retrieved DPC images. Due to the existence of phase unwrapping errors and phase errors induced by strong scattering materials in DPC images, DPC-CT slices suffers from information loss and severe artifacts. In the present research, iterative phase correction and threshold segmentation method is proposed to eliminate phase unwrapping error in DPC sinogram. Regularized phase retrieval method considering inter-frame noise impact is proposed to reconstruct high quality phase. Iterative reconstruction method with total variation is utilized to mitigate the artifacts caused by strong scattering materials. The proposed method is proved effective to improve the image quality in DPC-CT system.

Abstract:A new near infrared laser computed tomography test system is developed. The characteristics, construction, algorithm and performance of this system are analyzed. Simulation experiment results show that the image reconstruction speed and the resolution of this system can be improved easily. Research works also prove that the proposed near infrared computed tomography system is suitable for the parameter measurement of two-phase flow.

Abstract:In today's quality market, achieving the smallest feature recognition possible in the inspection process has become a higher priority than ever before. Due to com plex geometries and miniaturization of many high reliability components in the automotive, electronics and aerospace industries, achieving this level of feature recognition has also become increasingly difficult. Due to inherent limitations, many of the inspection requirements can no longer be satisfied with conventional X -ray inspection methods such as 2D X-ray inspection. For example, the depth of detail is not quantif iable, which in some cases can be vital to the manufacturing process. High resolution Computed Tomography (CT) presents an effective method of mapping the internal structure of components in three dimensions. With this technique, any internal difference that correspon ds to a contrast in material, density or porosity can be visualized and measured. These properties allow the us e of CT as an NDT tool, permitting examination of samples for internal porosity, cracks, delamination, inc lusions and mechanical fit. CT techniques are used to measure internal distances or the internal wall thicknes s of complex castings and areas which are often inaccessible for optical scanners or conventional tact ile coordinate measurement machines (CMM). The CT volume data provides information for reverse engineering or first article inspection of the entire part by mer ging it with the CAD model to generate a variance map of bot h data sets. Combined these capabilities contribute t o early detection of process and product weaknesses therefo re increasing yield and productivity. Modern microfocus and nanofocus ®1 systems are not only suitable for examinations of low absorbing materials like synthetics, but also for the analysis of the inter nal microstructure of higher absorbing metal castings, ceramics or composites containing high absorbing parti cles. High resolution CT widely expands the spectrum of X-ray detectable defects in process control and fail ure analysis increasing reliability and safety of components for, e.g., automotive, aerospace, and militar y applications. It opens a new dimension for 3D quality assurance and will partially replace destructive methods l ike cross-sectioning - saving costs and time per sample inspected. For high resolution NDT with Computed Tomography, a wide range of systems is available. This starts with microfocus X-ray systems like x|argos for real time ins pection of large castings which may be upgraded for Computed Tomography - this makes the advantages of 3D inspection affordable even for smaller companies. For high resolution high quality CT the nanotom ®1 is the first 180 kV nanoCT ®1 system with the capability to analyse small samples with the exceptional voxel-resolut ion of less than 0.5 microns per volume pixel (voxel). For example, object surfaces of molded plastics, light meta l castings and any internal details related to a variation in material, density or porosity can be visua lized and precisely measured.

Abstract:High-energy, high-dose, microfocus X-ray computed tomography (HHM CT) is one of the most effective methods for high-resolution X-ray radiography inspection of high-density samples with fine structures. Minimizing the effective focal spot size of the X-ray source can significantly improve the spatial resolution and the quality of the sample images, which is critical and important for the performance of HHM CT. The objective of this study is to present a 9 MeV HHM CT prototype based on a high-average-current photo-injector in which X-rays with about 70μm focal spot size are produced via using tightly focused electron beams with 65/66μm beam size to hit an optimized tungsten target. In digital radiography (DR) experiment using this HHM CT, clear imaging of a standard 0.1 mm lead DR resolution phantom reveals a resolution of 6 lp/mm (line pairs per mm), while a 5 lp/mm resolution is obtained in CT mode using another resolution phantom made of 10 mm ferrum. Moreover, comparing with the common CT systems, a better turbine blade prototype image was obtained with this HHM CT system, which also indicates the promising application potentials of HHM CT in non-destructive inspection or testing for high-density fine-structure samples.

Abstract:Nondestructive testing technology of industrial computed tomography(ICT) is introduced to investigate the injection molded bodies (green body, debinded body and, sintered part) in this study. The results show that ICT can characterize the defects qualitatively and quantitatively by comparing and analyzing the gray distribution of ICT images. The size, numbers and location of pores can be characterized precisely and the density distribution of the green body is quantitatively evaluated. The structure difference and evolution related with processing parameters is also analyzed by this technique. In addition, an image processing method is introduced to three-dimensional reconstruct the two dimensional images after threshold segmentation, and observe the internal structure and spatial morphology of the green body.

Abstract:The increasingly demand for machining accuracy and product quality excites a great interest in high-resolution non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, but spatial resolution of conventional high-energy computed tomography (CT) is limited to sub-millimeter because of large X-ray spot size. Therefore, we propose a novel high-resolution high-energy CT based on laser-driven X-ray source and prove its feasibility to allow high-spatial-resolution tomographic imaging of dense objects. A numerical model is developed with a consideration of realistic factors including parameter fluctuations, statistical noise and detecting efficiency. By using modulation transfer functions, the system performance is quantitatively characterized and optimized in terms of source characteristics, detector pixel size, geometrical configuration and projection parameters. As a result, the simulated tomography for a high-density object (up to 19.35 g/cm3) achieves a basic spatial resolution of 64.9 μm. This concept expands the prospects of laser-based compact X-ray sources and shows a great potential to achieve high-perspectivity micro-CT imaging for various industrial applications.
Three-dimensional Reconstruction and Porosity Calculation of Ceramic Coating: Nondestructive X-ray Computed Tomography

Abstract:Ceramic coatings can effectively prevent the corrosion of steel bars in marine environments.In this study, we prepared phosphate ceramic coatings on the surface of carbon steel.X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence were used to analyze the phase structure and composition of the ceramic and the results show that the main crystal composition of ceramic is P 2 O 5 and SiO 2 .Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the morphology of the surface and the section and results showed that the surface was cracked, and the thickness of ceramic was 349 μm.Meanwhile, a number of high-resolution images of internal structure of solids were obtained by non-destructive X-ray computed tomography (X-CT).Matlab and Mimics software were used to conduct the three-dimensional reconstruction of the CT images.Matrix and holes are distinguished by threshold segmentation in grayscale images, and the porosity of the ceramic coatings was calculated to be 14.0%.In addition, mercury intrusion porosimetry was used to verify the calculation results.Therefore, X-CT can be a useful and reliable tool for the visualization of the internal structure of ceramic coatings.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) information is often required in scientific research. This work describes the set-up of a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) system based on a digital radiography (DR) system. 3D information of specimen is carried out by the application of tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The DR system has a high spatial resolution, which can provide images of high qualities. The specimen under investigation is arranged on a 3-degrees system (x-y translation and z rotation). The rotation is controlled by a step motor, which can reach up to 0.028 degrees per step. The specimen can be easily moved along the source-detector axis so that different magnifications of details of interest can be obtained. Modulation Transfer function (MTF) of the system has been tested in order to determine its performance. At last, a preliminary experiment has been carried out on biomedical specimen using the micro-CT system.

Abstract:Micro-CT is a new three dimensional imaging tool based on x-ray imaging mechanism and with ultrahigh spatial resolution. It can be used to image all kinds of samples or live small animalsunder non-destructive condition. In this paper, a micro-CT prototype system with high spatial resolution was developed. From the projective images and reconstructed cross-sectional images of a small insect sample, the phase-contrast effect with the edge-enhancement trait can be observed clearly. The cross-sectional images also show that the developed micro-CT system has the detail detectability down to 12 micrometers.
X-ray micro-CT measurement of large parts at very low temperature

Abstract:At present, the automotive industry, along with other industries, has increasing demands on accuracy of produced parts and assemblies. Besides the regular dimensional and geometrical inspection, in some cases, also a verification at very low temperatures is required. X-ray computed tomography (CT), as a tool for non-destructive testing, is able to examine samples and then determine dimensions for strictly stable temperature conditions necessary for the stability of the CT system. Until now, no system that allows scanning of samples larger than a few millimeters at temperatures much below 0 °C has been presented. This paper presents a cooling system for CT imaging of parts with length up to 300 mm at the extreme temperature conditions of -40 °C, which are based on automotive industry requests. It describes the equipment and conditions under which it is possible to achieve a temperature stability of samples at low temperatures, while keeping an independent temperature regulation of the CT system. The presented system uses a standard industrial CT device and a newly designed cooling stage with passive cooling based on phase-change material. The system is demonstrated on the measurement of plastic part (car door handle) at temperatures of -40 °C and 20 °C. The paper also presents the method of how to interpret the thermal changes using tools of the commercial software VGStudio MAX (Volume Graphics GmbH, Germany).
Preliminary Research on Laser Plasma Accelerator based Inverse Compton Scattering X-ray Imaging

Abstract:Industrial CT system offers high precision non-destructive detection and capturing of the geometry of objects, especially for complex objects with hidden or difficult accessible surfaces. Modern micro focus X-ray CT system is used for high precision dimensional metrology. However, due to the energy and power limitations of the micro focus X-ray source, the micro-CT system currently performs highprecision metrology only for small objects of low-density materials. This paper will introduce the advantages of 3D CT imaging technology for accurate imaging complex structures inside objects, analyze the research and development trend of highprecision CT, and introduce the research progress of Tsinghua University in improving industrial CT resolution. Furthermore, preliminary research on laser plasma accelerator based inverse Compton scattering X-ray Imaging will be introduced. The novel micro CT system based on inverse Compton scattering radiation have the advantage of both high energy as well as small focal size. The design of micro-focus high-energy industrial CT based on new laser driven radiation source and its application prospects in high precision dimensional metrology of industrial components will be described.

Abstract:The waveguide screen, as the core element of the digital CT system, is composed of the microchannel array and the scintillator combination. Using the excellent X-ray absorption performance of high-lead equivalent glass empty tubes and combined with the preparation of microchannel array technology, a glass empty tubes array material with high X-ray absorption performance is prepared.The results show that the high lead equivalent glass empty tubes has good pulling ability, the microporous array size is uniform and controllable, the empty tubes array has high X-ray absorption performance, and has excellent imaging effect after filling the scintillators, which provides a new way for the preparation of the high-performance X-ray waveguide screen.

Abstract:Objective. High atomic number element nanoparticles have shown potential in tumor diagnosis and therapy. X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) technology enables quantitative imaging of high atomic number elements by specifically detecting characteristic X-ray signals. The potential for further biomedical applications of XFCT depends on balancing sensitivity, spatial resolution, and imaging speed in existing XFCT imaging systems. Approach. In this study, we utilized a high-energy resolution pixelated photon-counting detector for XFCT imaging. We tackled degradation caused by multi-pixel events in the photon-counting detector through energy and interaction position corrections. Sensitivity and spatial resolution imaging experiments were conducted using PMMA phantoms to validate the effectiveness of the multi-pixel events correction algorithm. Main results. After correction, the system's sensitivity and spatial resolution have both improved. Furthermore, XFCT/CBCT dual-modality imaging of gadolinium nanoparticles within mice subcutaneous tumor was successfully achieved. Significance. These results demonstrate the preclinical research application potential of the XFCT/CBCT dual-modality imaging system in high atomic number nanoparticle-based tumor diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract:A classic-optics-based grating-based attenuation-refraction-scattering radiographic & computed tomographic experimental system with a conventional X-ray tube has been built to synchronously reconstruct the distributions of the linear attenuation coefficient, refractive index gradient and generalized scattering parameter of a tested sample in only one computed tomographic scanning process. System optimization and a fusion method of three kinds of images are presented to show desirable structures of the sample. Some preliminary experimental results proved that our system can obtain most comprehensive physical characteristics of the sample.

Abstract:A high performance micro-tomography (micro-CT) system for insect or small animal imaging has been developed. The system consists of an x-ray source with small focus spot and high brightness, a high precision rotation stage with an object chuck to achieve a cone-beam mode scan, and an x-ray imaging detector. The core of the system is a cooled x-ray imaging detector with high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and ultra-low noise. Since imaging performance of the detector is mostly responsible for the resultant image quality and eventually determines the quality of a tomogram, we have evaluated the imaging characteristics of the detector in terms of modulation-transfer function (MTF), noise-power spectrum (NPS) and give some high quality x-ray digital radiation (DR) and 3D rendered CT images of some insects and a small fish.

Abstract:Ceramic matrix composites have been widely used in the field of aeronautics and astronautics because of its excellent properties such as highlighted mechanical properties at high temperature,low density and good oxidation resistance performance.Using nondestructive testing methods to make testing on ceramic matrix composites has significant meanings in ensuring the quality of materials and improving the reliability of related products.In this paper the current state and development of the nondestructive testing of the ceramic matrix composites are summarized.Principles of terahertz,X-ray,industrial CT,infrared thermal imaging,ultrasonic wave and acoustic emission for the ceramic matrix composites are elucidated in detail,and their applications in ceramic matrix composites are introduced.
