Abstract:A photo-cross-linked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone. The characterization of the polymer was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. The electro-optic film was obtained by spin-coating and corona poling then photo-cross-linked. The film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. An electro-optic measuring system was established based on this film. The results showed that the film has a linear electro-optic characteristic and the voltage sensitivity was higher than that of a GaAs probe.

Abstract:The orientation and relaxation of the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) groups in a side-chain poly(urethane-imide) before and after the electric poling has been investigated with real-time variable temperature FT-IR spectroscopy by monitoring the symmetrical stretching vibration of the nitro group. In situ second harmonic generation (SHG) and ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy were also used to compare with the FT-IR results. The results obtained by these techniques are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract:Efficient optical poling of a crosslinkable polyurethane film, in which a high crosslinking density can result, is experimentally investigated and compared with corona poling. The photoinduced orientation and the crosslinking processes of the chromophores can be performed separately. The heating rate and the final curing temperature are crucial for the optical poling procedure. Through thermal curing of the sample, the stability properties of photoinduced polar order are demonstrated to be dramatically enhanced, especially its photostability. It is also shown that corona poling is more effective than optical poling in the case of a crosslinkable thick film.

Abstract:A second-order nonlinear optical polyurethane was formed with an X-type multi-dimensional charge-transfer (CT) chromophore (DNPIPDHPI) and 3,3′-dimethoxy-4,4′-diphenyl diisocyanate. Simultaneous poling and polymerization and in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement technique was carried on to evaluate the thermal stability of the poling induced orientation. The SHG signal of the poled polymer film was not decay below 150 °C and remains 90% of relative d33 value at 200 °C, which is better than the results reported in literature. Comparison of thermal stability indicates that the X-type chromophores possess better property in controlling the decay of the SHG activity than classic chromophores.

Abstract:A new series of poly(p-diethynylbenzene) derivatives with trans structure and long-conjugation side chains were synthesized. These polymers possess good solubility and thermal stability. The maximum absorptions and band gaps depend on the nature and number of the substituents. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of these polymers were characterized with second-order hyperpolarizability as large as ≈10–30 esu in the non-resonant region.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract:Permanent all-optical poling of a side-chain polyimide film with azobenzene chromophore using a low power nanosecond laser was experimentally demonstrated. The characteristic kinetics of growth and decay of the induced second-order susceptibility were measured by second-harmonic generation. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficient d33 was determined to be 2.6 pm/V, and was observed to be stable at 85°C.

Abstract:All-optical poling (AOP) of a new side-chain poly(urethane-imide) (PUI) film was experimentally investigated. Besides the investigation of the preparation conditions and seeding parameters (including intensities, relative phase between the seeding beams and sample temperature) of the AOP process in this system, the surface morphology of the polymer film after the AOP was also studied using atomic force microscopy. Much less surface defects were observed for the all-optical poled PUI films than the corona poled films.

Abstract:Permanent optical poling was achieved in a crosslinkable system, a polyurethane with disperse red 19. Thermal stability of light-induced second order susceptibility was investigated for samples poled at different temperatures. The induced susceptibility d33 of the sample poled at 85°C was measured to be 46 pm/V, and could be stable at that poling temperature. Experimentally, it was demonstrated that the chemical crosslinking of the polymer matrix in optical poling procedures resulted in good stability of polar orientation of the nonlinear optical chromophores.

Abstract:A second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The polymer films were obtained by spin-coating and poling by three methods respectively. These methods of poling include needle electrode corona poling, parallel wire electrode corona poling and contact poling, which were used to obtain the molecular orientation. The uniformity of the side-chain polymer films have been studied by external electro-optic measurement. The spacial resolution of system is 3 mu m. Experimental results demonstrated that parallel wire electrode corona poling is easier to obtained large poled area with good uniformity than that of other methods.

Abstract:Poled polymer films with nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores doped or covalently attached to the polymer chain have been the subject of recent study1–3. These materials have potential as electro-optic switching/modulator and second harmonic generator (SHG)4,5. Their usefulness is determined by their temporal stability and other physical and mechanical properties. For NLO processes, such as SHG, it is essential to achieve noncentrosymmetric molecular assemblies. In addition the material must provide ease of processability.
Characterization of novel nonlinear optical polymeric film fabricated from dye doped PMMA

Abstract:A novel second-order nonlinear optical active dye was doped in poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) host with a concentration of approximately 10% by weight. The spin-coated film on indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass slide was poled at I 10 degrees C for 10 min using a corona-discharge setup to orient NLO chromophores. Results from a systematic evaluation to the film physical and optical properties using atomic force microscope (AFM), UV-VIS spectrometer and second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements were presented. The optical absorption spectra of the film show that the absorption peak wavelength is in the vicinity of 505 nm. After electric poling, the UV-VIS spectra exhibit a decrease in absorption. According to AFM images, the surface of the film before poling was flat and clean, however, this good quality film was changed after poling, resulting in numerous hills and valleys on the surface structure, which were aligned to the poling direction. The SHG coefficient (d(33)) of the poled polymer at 1064 nm fundamental wavelength was determined with Maker-fringe method and obtained as 17.8 pm/V. The relation between the second-order nonlinear coefficients d(33) and d(31) for the poled polymer film was also discussed in detail in the paper.

Abstract:The alignment of dye molecules in optically poled polymer films is modeled. We point out that when writing beams (fundamental and second harmonic) are linearly polarized with their polarization directions parallel, the majority of the dye molecules in a poled film are axially oriented perpendicular to the writing-beam polarization, whereas the minority are polar oriented parallel to the writing-beam polarization. Only the latter, however, contribute to the second-order nonlinearity of the film. This model is verified by experiments. Abstract:The third order optical nonlinearity in 1-d conducting polymers are investigated with a simple model. The relevant physical effects on the nonlinear polarization are analysed. For third harmonic generation our result is in good accordance with the experiment of prestine polyacetylene.

Abstract:The ground-and the excited-state nonlinearities of two new copolymers are investigated in nanosecond scale at 1064 nm. It is found that the excited-state susceptibility is dramatically larger than the corresponding groundstate susceptibility for each sample. The experimental results also give evidence that superlattice structure of the copolymers can enhance, especially for the excited state, the molecular hyperpolarizabilities significantly. This enhancement may be attributed to the confinement effect of the pump-induced carriers.

Abstract:A highly thermally and temporally stable, second-order, nonlinear-optical polyimide with an X-type chromophore (2-{4-[4,5-di(4-nitrophenyl)imidazolyl]phenyl}-4,5-di(4-aminophenyl)imidazole) was synthesized by the Michael addition reaction. The structure of the prepolymer was characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Its thermal stability and curing behavior were studied with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and FTIR. After the Curing, the glass-transition temperature of the polyimide greatly increased. The FTIR results suggested that addition and/or crosslinking reactions were carried Out during the thermal Curing of the prepolymer. A poling polyimide film was achieved, and the thermal and temporal stability of the poling-induced orientation were evaluated with a multistep corona-poling technique at an elevated temperature and with in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. The temporal orientation of the poled polyimide film was ox,er 1000 h at 150 degrees C; it retained 85% of the initial second-order, nonlinear-optical coefficient. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The cyano and nitro groups were chosen as acceptor groups, and the substituent amino or ether groups as donor groups to the matrix. Polyurethane (PU) was modified by glycerol to increase the content of chromophore and to improve the stability of the nonlinearity. T g and T m were raised and solubility, film-forming ability and other physical properties were improved. The average functional groups of the reactant can be adjusted to ≥ 2 with polygroups and monogroups mixture. These poled polymers show high second-order optical nonlinearity and would have potential application in frequency-doubling or electro-optical controlling devices.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Material containing azo-dye chromophore is one of the most probable candidates for photonic devices because of their high second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. For the use of second-harmonic generation devices the phase matching condition is important, and optical-poling is an excellent method to make suitable periodic structure for it. The most crucial problem for dye-containing second-order nonlinear optical materials is a decrease of the nonlinearity because of the relaxation of the polarized structure. In this study, optical-poling and sol-gel method were used to make a periodic structure and to solve the relaxation problem, respectively.
