Abstract:A novel method to measure the absolute phase shift oil reflection of thin film is presented utilizing a white-light interferometer in spectral domain. By applying Fourier transformation to the recorded spectral interference signal, we retrieve the spectral phase function phi, which is induced by three parts: the path length difference in air L, the effective thickness of slightly dispersive cube beam splitter T(eff) and the nonlinear phase function due to multi-reflection of the thin film structure. We utilize the fact that the overall optical path difference (OPD) is linearly dependent on the refractive index of the beam splitter to determine both L and T(eff). The spectral phase shift oil reflection of thin film structure can be obtained by subtracting these two parts from phi. We show theoretically and experimentally that our new method can provide a simple and fast solution in calculating the absolute spectral phase function of optical thin films, while still maintaining high accuracy.

Abstract:It is necessary to study and improve the modulation characteristics of Liquid Crystal Modulator (LCM) because of its wide application. A logarithm driving signal model is proposed to linearize the phase response of LCM between 0 and π. Furthermore, it is found out in the experiments that the degree of phase response linearization of liquid crystal modulator decreases with driving frequency increasing. To overcome this problem, this paper presents mapping the nonlinear phase response to linear one when LCM is driven by a periodic signal constructed of the logarithm model. The experimental results indicate that it is feasible to obtain the linear phase response between 0 and π.

Abstract:As spatial light modulators (SLMs) are becoming flexible and the preferred device for light steering, the SLM's modulation calibration still remains challenging. No pixel-addressable measurement of the SLM has yet been practically implemented. We present a quantitative phase measurement and calibration method for a parallel aligned liquid crystal spatial light modulator (PAL-SLM) based on Pancharatnam phase-shifting interferometric microscopy. The pixel-wise phase of SLM can be detected from microscopic interference pattern formed from two orthogonally polarized light waves reflected off the PAL-SLM. The wave phase is modulated or non-modulated depending on its polarization direction parallel or orthogonal to the liquid crystal director. Owing to self-referencing common-path interferometric microscopic imaging, the proposed method is quite robust against environmental disturbance and enables a high-precision pixel-wise characterization of SLM.

Abstract:In the fields of optics and photonics, phase-only spatial light modulators (SLMs) play an increasingly important role in wave-front engineering. However, the SLMs are subject to wavefront distortion arising from the imperfection in the birefringence effect and physical structure of modulators. This paper presents a simple self-interference phase calibration method applicable to liquid-crystal SLM. We build an interferometric imaging system based on the Pancharatnam phase-shifting to measure the phase distribution of a light beam coming from SLMs. Two types of phase modulation errors of SLMs can be characterized in the measurement process: the erroneous gamma curve and shape aberration. The former belongs to dynamic phase distortion and is measured through a four-step Pancharatnam phase-shifting interference, which allows a one-shot recording of interference pattern via a polarization camera; the latter represents static phase distortion and is extracted from the interference between light waves coming from different regions of the SLM panel by using Zernike polynomial fitting. Our method has the advantages of high-precision pixel-wise phase correction and robustness against environmental disturbance and thus can facilitate the applications of SLM in optical field manipulation.

Abstract:LC-SLM provides a flexible way to modulate the phase of light with the help of a grayscale pattern loaded on it. Nevertheless, the modulated phase profile is of relatively low accuracy due to the nonlinear and nonuniform response of the liquid crystal layer in the SLM. To improve the performance of LC-SLM on the wavefront generation, the nonlinear and nonuniform phase response needs to be calibrated and compensated effectively. In this chapter, we present some state-of-art methods to measure the phase modulation curve of the LC-SLM. Some methods to measure the static aberration caused by the backplane of the LC-SLM are then presented. Last but not the least, the future development of the LC-SLM in phase modulation is also presented.

Abstract:An optical circular polarization modulator(CPM) based on liquid crystal(LC) is presented.Using the electric birefringence of LC material,the device can output polarized light with two circular-polarization states.The detailed illuminations of the device's structure and its testing investigation are also presented.This kind of CPM has the advantage of low drive voltage that is less than 10 V,fast response speed and small volume.The test results demonstrate the circular polarization degree of output light of this CPM is above 98.8 %.

Abstract:This study proposes a method for reducing the crosstalk effect in phase-only spatial light modulators (SLMs) for double-phase holograms (DPHs). New encoding equations for DPHs are deduced according to the crosstalk model of the SLM. The crosstalk effect of the SLM is obtained via measurement of the diffraction efficiency of binary phase gratings as opposed to measurement of the point spread function. The results of experiments indicate that this method can significantly improve the image quality of DPHs in the optical reconstruction.
Linearization of periodic phase response for Liquid crystal modulator

Abstract:Liquid crystal modulator(LCM) is now widely applied, especially in optical telecommunication networks. However, according to the electro-optic characteristic of liquid crystal, we will obtain nonlinear phase response when LCM is driven by the voltage varying with time linearly(v=kt+v0). And in practical application this nonlinear phase response will affect the modulation precision, communication modulation efficiency and so on. This paper presents a logarithm driving signal model to linearize the nonlinear phase response of LCM between 0 and π. When driven by a periodic signal whose voltage varies from 2.0 to 10.7V in the way of logarithm in every periods, the LCM's phase response hops in the point of intersection of two voltage periods. Therefore, we advance another periodic logarithm driving signal, whose voltage ascends from 2.0 to 10.7V in first half periods and descends from 10.7 to 2.0V in the other half periods. Furthermore, We find that the degree of phase response linearization of LCM decreases with the frequency of driving signal increasing. This paper proposes mapping the nonlinear phase response to linear one to overcome this problem. The experimental results indicate that obtaining the linear phase response of liquid crystal between 0 and π with different-frequency driving signals is feasible. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:Phase modulating spatial light modulators (SLMs) can be used to alter the shape of a laser wavefront to achieve a deflection or change in the shape of a laser beam. This paper reports the results of characterization, simulation and optimization of a one-dimensional liquid crystal (LC) SLM. The device has a large ratio between LC layer thickness and pixel pitch that results in a fringing field between pixels. In effect, the applied phase patterns will be lowpass filtered and the loss of high frequency components limits, for instance, the usable steering range. A method is presented where intensity measurements in the far field are used to determine how the phase modulation at the SLM is distorted. The inhomogeneous optical anisotropy of the device was determined by modelling the liquid crystal director distribution within the electrode-pixel structure. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations were used to calculate the light propagation through the LC. The simulated phase distortion was compared with the experimental results. A voltage compensation scheme to improve the diffraction efficiency was developed utilizing the measured and simulated results. It is demonstrated that a modification of the voltage patterns can give a better realization of high frequency components in the phase distribution and an increase in maximum steering angle by a factor two.

Abstract:Phase-only Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) is one of the most widely used devices for phase modulation. It has been successfully applied in the field with requirements of precision phase modulation such as holographic display, optical tweezers, lithography, etc. However, due to the limitations in the manufacturing process, the grayscale-phase response could be different for every single SLM device, even varying on sections of an SLM panel. A diverse array of calibration methods have been proposed and could be sorted into two categories: the interferometric phase calibration methods and the diffractive phase calibration methods. The principles of phase-only SLM are introduced. The main phase calibration methods are discussed and reviewed. The advantages of these methods are analyzed and compared. The potential methods for different applications are suggested.
Fast measurement of the phase flicker of a digitally addressable LCoS-SLM

Abstract:<p>This work studied the phase flicker of Holoeye Pluto spatial light modulator (SLM), which is a typical, pure phase and digitally addressable liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM). We demonstrated a method for fast measuring the phase flicker of this kind of SLM, which uses only one photon detector to measure the intensity of the first order light diffracted by the binary grating. Our experimental results show that the higher the gray level, the more severe the phase flicker, but the average phase stability maintains about 3.1%. Our results also prove that the triangular wave model basically performs well as an approximate model of the phase flicker. Furthermore, the phase flicker waveform is mainly determined by the winner of the competition between two harmonics with frequencies of 300 Hz and 600 Hz. At the gray level of 125, the amplitude difference between the two harmonics is small, the model fails. Essentially, these results have nothing to do with the specific address voltage of the SLM, but are determined by the PWM waveform corresponding to the gray level.</p>

Abstract:This paper discusses the characteristics of phase-only modulation using a reflec tive liquid crystal on silicon(LCOS). The 2×2 Jones matrix method is used as a computational tool to theoretically analyze phase modulation characteristics. Th e system has been constructed for testing of amplitude and phase, in which a He- Ne laser as the light source, testing the wave front phase using an interferomet er. The LCOS displays as a liquid crystal spatial light modulator and its drivin g circuit is controlled by a computer, digital data are sampled by CCD. We have tested the phase modulation of 1024×768 LCOS displays. Given the state of input and output polarizations ,the result of testing our theories by experiment sho w consistency ,so LCOS displays can be used as phase-only modulator.

Abstract:The use of a SLM for the three-wave lateral shearing interference is proposed, and an eight-step phase-shifting scheme is developed for extracting phase information from three-wave interferograms. The two-dimensional phase of object is reconstructed from two phase differences which are calculated from two orthogonal sheared interferograms. The flexibility of SLM can be fully utilized in the sense of dynamical controlling of the direction and amount of shear, as well as phase shift. The numerical simulation and optical experiment are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of the proposed scheme. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An iterative method for accurately measuring and calibrating liquid crystal-based spatial light modulators (SLMs) through Michelson interferometry is described here. In this framework, staggered fringes were formed by transversing the phase value displayed by half of the SLM from 0 to 2π while keeping the phase value displayed by the rest half to 0. Advanced digital signal processing was employed to extract phase values from measured staggered fringes, and the look-up-table values inherent in the SLM were updated accordingly. In practice, going through this phase measurement only once cannot always guarantee a satisfactory performance, possibly due to insufficient sampling during measurements and inaccurate interpolation during data processing. We show in this work that iteratively performing the above procedure several times can significantly reduce the phase differences between the measured phases and the desired ones. Experimentally, we validated the performance by calibrating two SLMs with different models and initial settings. We empirically found that the phase error, defined as the root-mean-square difference between the measured phase values and the desired ones, can be reduced to 0.01–0.02π within only three rounds of iterations. We anticipate that this iterative calibration method can be very helpful to SLMs-oriented applications.

Abstract:A simple and efficient compensation method for the full correction of both the anisotropic and isotropic nonuniformity of the light phase retardance in a liquid crystal (LC) layer is presented. This is achieved by accurate measurement of the spatial variation of the LC layer's thickness with the help of a calibrated liquid crystal wedge, rather than solely relying on the light intensity profile recorded using two crossed polarizers. Local phase retardance as a function of the applied voltage is calculated with its LC thickness and a set of reference data measured from the intensity of the reflected light using two crossed polarizers. Compensation of the corresponding phase nonuniformity is realized by applying adjusted local voltage signals for different grey levels. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the proposed method is applied to improve the performance of a phase-only liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) spatial light modulator (SLM). The power of the first diffraction order measured with the binary phase gratings compensated by this method is compared with that compensated by the conventional crossed-polarizer method. The results show that the phase compensation method proposed here can increase the dynamic range of the first order diffraction power significantly from 15~21 dB to over 38 dB, while the crossed-polarizer method can only increase it to 23 dB.

Abstract:Because the modulation accuracy and precision of liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) are strongly influenced by difference in operation conditions and the manufacturing errors of spatial light modulator, it is an essential procedure to measure and calibrate its phase modulation characteristics such as phase errors and nonlinear compensation quality. In this letter, we propose a novel method based on Quadriwave lateral shearing interferometry to obtain these phase modulation characteristics for LC-SLM, which in theory presents obvious advantages over conventional methods such as high precision, excellent noise immunity, and the requirement of only one interferogram during reconstructing modulation phase. The validity of our proposed method has been verified by comparing the experimental results with those obtained from Twyman-Green Interferometry and Optical Power interferometry.

Abstract:There are many important applications for phase-only liquid crystal on Silicon-based spatial light modulators (LCOS SLMs). Among the applications, the diffractive beam splitting, beam shaping and beam steering with LCOS SLM are finding more and more use in telecommunication applications (e.g. wavelength selective switch for ROADM, space and mode division multiplexing). However, many effects of LCOS device have to be considered if we want to get high quality output light field. For example, the ideal phase, intensity and polarization distribution in far field are usually deteriorated by the pixelated metal structure and fringing field effects. Thus, the total efficiency is decreased. By using electro-optical and electromagnetic simulation methods, we can properly incorporate the effects that influence the optical performance of LCOS and optimize the design. Furthermore we report the implementation of the high-performance high-resolution LCOS SLM for the telecommunication C- and L-band with the average insertion loss (IL) of less than 0.2 dB, achieved by the reflectivity-enhancement coating on the LCOS backplane. The experimental results on reflectivity, diffraction efficiency, crosstalk and other important parameters are compared with the theoretical predictions.
