Abstract:Lattice theory has close connections with modal logic via algebraic semantics and lattices of modal logics. However, one less explored direction is to view lattices as relational structures based on partial orders, and study the modal logic over them. In this paper, following the earlier steps of Burgess and van Benthem in the 1980s, we use the basic tense logic and its nominal extensions with binary modalities of infimum and supremum to talk about lattices via standard Kripke semantics. As the main results, we obtain a series of complete axiomatizations of lattices, (un)bounded lattices over partial orders or strict preorders. In particular, we solve an axiomatization problem left open by Burgess (1984).

Abstract:Separation logic is used to reason locally about stateful programs. State of the art program logics for higher-order store are usually built on top of untyped operational semantics, in part because traditional denotational methods have struggled to simultaneously account for general references and parametric polymorphism. The recent discovery of simple denotational semantics for general references and polymorphism in synthetic guarded domain theory has enabled us to develop TULIP, a higher-order separation logic over the typed equational theory of higher-order store for a monadic version of System F{mu,ref}. The Tulip logic differs from operationally-based program logics in two ways: predicates range over the meanings of typed terms rather than over the raw code of untyped terms, and they are automatically invariant under the equational congruence of higher-order store, which applies even underneath a binder. As a result, "pure" proof steps that conventionally require focusing the Hoare triple on an operational redex are replaced by a simple equational rewrite in Tulip. We have evaluated Tulip against standard examples involving linked lists in the heap, comparing our abstract equational reasoning with more familiar operational-style reasoning. Our main result is the soundness of Tulip, which we establish by constructing a BI-hyperdoctrine over the denotational semantics of F{mu,ref} in an impredicative version of synthetic guarded domain theory.

Abstract:Starting from a general dynamic analysis of reasoning and programming, we develop two main dynamic perspectives upon logic programming. First, the standard fixed point semantics for Horn clause programs naturally supports imperative programming styles. Next, we provide axiomatizations for Prolog-type inference engines using calculi of sequents employing modified versions of standard structural rules such as monotonicity or permutation. Finally, we discuss the implications of all this for a broader enterprise of ‘abstract proof theory’.

Abstract:We investigate involutive commutative residuated lattices without unit, which are commutative residuated lattice-ordered semigroups enriched with a unary involutive negation operator. The logic of this structure is discussed and the Genzten-style sequent calculus of it is presented. Moreover, we prove the decidability of this logic.

Abstract:We consider a simple modal logic whose non-modal part has conjunction and disjunction as connectives and whose modalities come in adjoint pairs, but are not in general closure operators. Despite absence of negation and implication, and of axioms corresponding to the characteristic axioms of (e.g.) T, S4 and S5, such logics are useful, as shown in previous work by Baltag, Coecke and the first author, for encoding and reasoning about information and misinformation in multi-agent systems. For such a logic we present an algebraic semantics, using lattices with agent-indexed families of adjoint pairs of operators, and a cut-free sequent calculus. The calculus exploits operators on sequents, in the style of "nested" or "tree-sequent" calculi; cut-admissibility is shown by constructive syntactic methods. The applicability of the logic is illustrated by reasoning about the muddy children puzzle, for which the calculus is augmented with extra rules to express the facts of the muddy children scenario.

Two variable logic with ultimately periodic counting

Abstract:We consider the extension of two variable logic with quantifiers that state that the number of elements where a formula holds should belong to a given ultimately periodic set. We show that both satisfiability and finite satisfiability of the logic are decidable. We also show that the spectrum of any sentence is definable in Presburger arithmetic. In the process we present several refinements to the ``biregular graph method''. In this method, decidability issues concerning two-variable logics are reduced to questions about Presburger definability of integer vectors associated with partitioned graphs, where nodes in a partition satisfy certain constraints on their in- and out-degrees.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, the logic programming paradigm has been successfully expanded to support probabilistic modeling, inference and learning. The resulting paradigm of probabilistic logic programming (PLP) and its programming languages owes much of its success to a declarative semantics, the so-called distribution semantics. However, the distribution semantics is limited to discrete random variables only. While PLP has been extended in various ways for supporting hybrid, that is, mixed discrete and continuous random variables, we are still lacking a declarative semantics for hybrid PLP that not only generalizes the distribution semantics and the modeling language but also the standard inference algorithm that is based on knowledge compilation. We contribute the hybrid distribution semantics together with the hybrid PLP language DC-ProbLog and its inference engine infinitesimal algebraic likelihood weighting (IALW). These have the original distribution semantics, standard PLP languages such as ProbLog, and standard inference engines for PLP based on knowledge compilation as special cases. Thus, we generalize the state-of-the-art of PLP towards hybrid PLP in three different aspects: semantics, language and inference. Furthermore, IALW is the first inference algorithm for hybrid probabilistic programming based on knowledge compilation.

Abstract:Logic programming, as exemplified by datalog, defines the meaning of a program as the canonical smallest model derived from deductive closure over its inference rules. However, many problems call for an enumeration of models that vary along some set of choices while maintaining structural and logical constraints -- there is no single canonical model. The notion of stable models has successfully captured programmer intuition about the set of valid solutions for such problems, giving rise to a family of programming languages and associated solvers collectively known as answer set programming. Unfortunately, the definition of a stable model is frustratingly indirect, especially in the presence of rules containing free variables. We propose a new formalism, called finite-choice logic programing, for which the set of stable models can be characterized as the least fixed point of an immediate consequence operator. Our formalism allows straightforward expression of common idioms in both datalog and answer set programming, gives meaning to a new and useful class of programs, enjoys a constructive and direct operational semantics, and admits a predictive cost semantics, which we demonstrate through our implementation.

Abstract:Modal fixpoint logics traditionally play a central role in computer science, in particular in artificial intelligence and concurrency. The mu-calculus and its relatives are among the most expressive logics of this type. However, popular fixpoint logics tend to trade expressivity for simplicity and readability, and in fact often live within the single variable fragment of the mu-calculus. The family of such flat fixpoint logics includes, e.g., LTL, CTL, and the logic of common knowledge. Extending this notion to the generic semantic framework of coalgebraic logic enables covering a wide range of logics beyond the standard mu-calculus including, e.g., flat fragments of the graded mu-calculus and the alternating-time mu-calculus (such as alternating-time temporal logic ATL), as well as probabilistic and monotone fixpoint logics. We give a generic proof of completeness of the Kozen-Park axiomatization for such flat coalgebraic fixpoint logics.

Abstract:The relation among various semantic approaches for programming in three-valued logics is further clarified, some of the main results on Lassez and Maher's consequence operator are generalized, and all possible choices of three-valued implications under the following two conditions are found: (1) Every program has the (strong or weak) model intersection property, and (2) Fixpoints or post-fixpoints of Delahaye and Thibau, Fitting, and Lassez and Maher's consequence operators associated with a program coincide with its models. To overcome some objections to programming in three-valued logics, a four-valued semantics for logic programming with negation is also proposed.

Abstract:Applications like program synthesis sometimes require proving that a property holds for all of the infinitely many programs described by a grammar - i.e., an inductively defined set of programs. Current verification frameworks overapproximate programs' behavior when sets of programs contain loops, including two Hoare-style logics that fail to be relatively complete when loops are allowed. In this work, we prove that compositionally verifying simple properties for infinite sets of programs requires tracking distinct program behaviors over unboundedly many executions. Tracking this information is both necessary and sufficient for verification. We prove this fact in a general, reusable theory of denotational semantics that can model the expressivity and compositionality of verification techniques over infinite sets of programs. We construct the minimal compositional semantics that captures simple properties of sets of programs and use it to derive the first sound and relatively complete Hoare-style logic for infinite sets of programs. Thus, our methods can be used to design minimally complex, compositional verification techniques for sets of programs.

Abstract:We introduce an extension of first-order logic that comes equipped with additional predicates for reasoning about an abstract state. Sequents in the logic comprise a main formula together with pre- and postconditions in the style of Hoare logic, and the axioms and rules of the logic ensure that the assertions about the state compose in the correct way. The main result of the paper is a realizability interpretation of our logic that extracts programs into a mixed functional/imperative language. All programs expressible in this language act on the state in a sequential manner, and we make this intuition precise by interpreting them in a semantic metatheory using the state monad. Our basic framework is very general, and our intention is that it can be instantiated and extended in a variety of different ways. We outline in detail one such extension: A monadic version of Heyting arithmetic with a wellfounded while rule, and conclude by outlining several other directions for future work.

Interdefinability of defeasible logic and logic programming under the well-founded semantics

Abstract:We provide a method of translating theories of Nute's defeasible logic into logic programs, and a corresponding translation in the opposite direction. Under certain natural restrictions, the conclusions of defeasible theories under the ambiguity propagating defeasible logic ADL correspond to those of the well-founded semantics for normal logic programs, and so it turns out that the two formalisms are closely related. Using the same translation of logic programs into defeasible theories, the semantics for the ambiguity blocking defeasible logic NDL can be seen as indirectly providing an ambiguity blocking semantics for logic programs. We also provide antimonotone operators for both ADL and NDL, each based on the Gelfond-Lifschitz (GL) operator for logic programs. For defeasible theories without defeaters or priorities on rules, the operator for ADL corresponds to the GL operator and so can be seen as partially capturing the consequences according to ADL. Similarly, the operator for NDL captures the consequences according to NDL, though in this case no restrictions on theories apply. Both operators can be used to define stable model semantics for defeasible theories.

Abstract:Logic rules and inference are fundamental in computer science and have been studied extensively. However, prior semantics of logic languages can have subtle implications and can disagree significantly, on even very simple programs, including in attempting to solve the well-known Russell's paradox. These semantics are often non-intuitive and hard-to-understand when unrestricted negation is used in recursion. This paper describes a simple new semantics for logic rules, founded semantics, and its straightforward extension to another simple new semantics, constraint semantics, that unify the core of different prior semantics. The new semantics support unrestricted negation, as well as unrestricted existential and universal quantifications. They are uniquely expressive and intuitive by allowing assumptions about the predicates, rules, and reasoning to be specified explicitly, as simple and precise binary choices. They are completely declarative and relate cleanly to prior semantics. In addition, founded semantics can be computed in linear time in the size of the ground program.

Semantics for Linear-time Temporal Logic with Finite Observations

Abstract:LTL3 is a multi-valued variant of Linear-time Temporal Logic for runtime verification applications. The semantic descriptions of LTL3 in previous work are given only in terms of the relationship to conventional LTL. Our approach, by contrast, gives a full model-based inductive accounting of the semantics of LTL3, in terms of families of definitive prefix sets. We show that our definitive prefix sets are isomorphic to linear-time temporal properties (sets of infinite traces), and thereby show that our semantics of LTL3 directly correspond to the semantics of conventional LTL. In addition, we formalise the formula progression evaluation technique, popularly used in runtime verification and testing contexts, and show its soundness and completeness up to finite traces with respect to our semantics. All of our definitions and proofs are mechanised in Isabelle/HOL.

Abstract:We generalise the distribution semantics underpinning probabilistic logic programming by distilling its essential concept, the separation of a free random component and a deterministic part. This abstracts the core ideas beyond logic programming as such to encompass frameworks from probabilistic databases, probabilistic finite model theory and discrete lifted Bayesian networks. To demonstrate the usefulness of such a general approach, we completely characterise the projective families of distributions representable in the generalised distribution semantics and we demonstrate both that large classes of interesting projective families cannot be represented in a generalised distribution semantics and that already a very limited fragment of logic programming (acyclic determinate logic programs) in the determinsitic part suffices to represent all those projective families that are representable in the generalised distribution semantics at all.
