Abstract:A measurement device is designed for detecting the diameter and number of small particles in a clean media,its counting mechanism based on light-blockage and extinction theory and the employing technology of near forward light scattering are analyzed in detail.Numerical calculations and experiment results showed that the device has a good counting capability,its counting efficiency can reach 90 % for particles above 2?μm and also reach 70 % for particles below 1?μm.This device could analyze contamination degree of clean media and can be used in the field of environment monitoring.
Particle sizing with spectral analysis on the transmission fluctuations

Abstract:Spectral analysis on the transmission fluctuations is a new method for measurements on large particles. Radiated by a narrow beam, the flowing particle system at a uniform velocity causes the transmission signal fluctuate violently. Both the average transmission and the spectrum of transmission fluctuations can be obtained statistically, which include the complete information on particle size distribution and particle concentration (volume fraction). By using the inverse algorithm, the particle size distribution may be extracted from the spectrum of transmission fluctuations and consequently the particle concentration can be achieved from the average transmission. The theoretical expression of the transmission fluctuation spectrum is established, for monolayer of mono-dispersed particles. The theory is then extended to a 3-dimensional system of mono-dispersed particles and further to that of poly-dispersed particles. Experimental test and simulation on dilute particle systems with particle diameters in the range 32～425 μm are performed, which shows that the method is valid to measure the particle size distribution and particle concentration simultaneously.

Abstract:Particle counting serves as a pivotal constituent in diverse analytical domains, encompassing a broad spectrum of entities, ranging from blood cells and bacteria to viruses, droplets, bubbles, wear debris, and magnetic beads. Recent epochs have witnessed remarkable progressions in microfluidic chip technology, culminating in the proliferation and maturation of microfluidic chip-based particle counting methodologies. This paper undertakes a taxonomical elucidation of microfluidic chip-based particle counters based on the physical parameters they detect. These particle counters are classified into three categories: optical-based counters, electrical-based particle counters, and other counters. Within each category, subcategories are established to consider structural differences. Each type of counter is described not only in terms of its working principle but also the methods employed to enhance sensitivity and throughput. Additionally, an analysis of future trends related to each counter type is provided.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present some new developments in particle characterization. More precisely, the paper will be focused on the description of some progresses in the characterization of particles by interferometric methods which are generally considered as the most accurate ones. Three standard configurations will be presented and discussed: i) Interference between scattered light from a particle and a single reference beam (holography), ii) Interference between different kinds of light scattered by a single particle (ILIDS), iii) Interference between the light scattered from different particles. A special attention will be devoted to the possibility to obtain 3D information on the particle location.

Abstract:Nanoparticles have recently attracted extensive attention in view of their great potential in biomedicine and bioanalytical applications. Single particle detection via light scattering offers a simple and efficient approach for the size, size distribution, and concentration analysis of nanoparticles. In particular, intrinsic heterogeneity or rare events masked by ensemble averaging can be revealed. However, the sixth power dependence of Rayleigh scattering on particle size makes it very challenging to detect individual nanoparticles of small sizes. This article is intended to provide an overview of recent progress in the development of techniques based on light scattering for the detection of single nanoparticles.

Abstract:Inhalable particulate matter has been widely concerned due to its serious harm to human health in China. Real time, rapid and high-resolution monitoring of particle concentration change is the first step to prevent and control inhalable particle pollution. In this paper we present a method for detecting fine particle mass concentration based on forward and lateral light scattering measurement. Based on Mie light scattering theory, we design and establish the experimental platform of multi-angle light scattering measurement. Moreover, a portable multi-angle light scattering detection particle mass concentration prototype is developed by using computer modeling, 3D printing and weak photoelectric signal detection technology. Through theoretical numerical simulation and experimental analysis of optical platform, 20° forward and 45° lateral are selected as the optimal detection angles with the advantages of simple structure and high efficiency. Finally, we obtain the pulse reference voltage of different particle size segments is to realize the particle size segment detection. A specific case of our nonlinear regression algorithm is used to calibrate parameters of the detection system. The feasibility of the proposed detection method is verified by the comparative detection experiments in the laboratory and the outdoor atmospheric environment.

Abstract:This paper presents a design of particle detection system based on optical transmission and scattering method. In this setup, a laser with emitting wavelength of 671 nm is employed. The sample particles are 3.03 um and 7.07 um polystyrene microspheres. Based on Mie scattering theory and Beer-Lambert law, the particle size and particle number concentrations against the scattered light intensity and transmitted light intensity are studied experimentally. The experimental results show that the scattered light intensity increases with the increasing of particle size and particle number concentrations. However, the transmitted light intensity decreases with the increasing of particle number concentrations. In our future work, this system will be applied to platelet aggregation detection. By detecting the transmitted light intensity and scattered light intensity simultaneously, this detection system can achieve more accurate detection.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of particulate matter in air environment, aiming at the defects of traditional sampling method, such as complex measurement process, heavy instrument and difficult on-line monitoring, this paper selects the light scattering method in non sampling method as the method of particulate matter concentration detection. According to the light scattering phenomenon and Mie scattering theory, in an ideal case, the light intensity of the scattered light is directly proportional to the mass concentration of particles, and the particle concentration can be calculated by algorithm. The particle concentration detection system is constructed by the data acquisition circuit, low-power sampling and holding circuit, control center circuit and power module.

Abstract:Particle is widely involved in scientific research and industry, among the high frequency used examination methods to its size range and distribution, the laser scattering one has especial advantages such as high precision, quick test, good repeatability and wide measuring range. For enhancing the measuring accuracy, a new non-mode inversion algorithm is presented by study of non-mode data processing algorithm, optical system and annular photodiodes are designed, corresponding test and analysis software is developed, and a laser particle size analyse system based on scattering theory is achieved. The results obtained by experiments indicate that this algorithm enhanced the measuring precision and reduced the repetition error effectively.

Abstract:The authors introduce the basic theory of dynamic light scattering(DLS).The basis components of experimental system are introduced,and the major things are the laser,PMT and digital correlation.They measure many particles that ranging between nanometer and micron.The factors are analyzed that influence the results,which are particles' dispersion and solubility,receiving area of PMT.They suppose some ways to obtain better result,and that is worth consulting for getting the correct result.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of the existing optical particle counter sensor easily being affected particle shape, refractive index and photosensitive location,a new optical particle counter sensor was designed. First of all,a rota-tional symmetry elliptic cavity mirror was used for expanding acceptable scope of space angle,reduced the effects of particle shape and refractive index. Based on the T matrix theory,the relationship between the particle size and scat-tering luminous flux were simulated and computed for non spherical particles of the different refractive index,differ-ent shape and different orientation. The results showed, under the condition of different refractive index, different shape and different spatial orientation,the relationship between the received luminous flux and the particle size re-vealed a good monotonic. It indicated the system reduced the effects of particle shape and refractive index,and had a better effect than other existing systems. Secondly,the combination system of aspheric lens-cylindrical lens was used for improving the uniformity of laser intensity,reducing the effects of different position in the photosensitive ar-ea. The simulation calculation showed that after using the combination of optical devices,the uniformity of light in-tensity was significantly increased,and the negative impact of different location in the photosensitive area is largely eliminated. Then,the overall structure of the sensor is introduced. Finally,the experiment confirmed that the sensor has better performance. This sensor also had the structure simple,portable and inexpensive advantages,and higher application value.

Abstract:Under the condition of ultra-low emission for power plants, the particulate matter concentration is significantly lower than that of typical power plants a decade ago, which posed new challenges for the particulate matter monitoring of stationary emission. The monitoring of particulate matter mass concentration based on ensemble light scattering has been found affected by particle size. Thus, this study develops a method of using the scattering angular distribution to obtain the real-time particle size, and then correct the particulate matter concentration with the real-time measured particle size. In this study, a real-time aerosol concentration and particle size measurement setup is constructed with a fixed detector at the forward direction and a rotating detector. The mass concentration is measured by the fixed detector, and the particle size is measured from the intensity ratio of the two detectors. The simulations show that the particle size has power law functionality with the angular spacing of the ripple structure according to Mie theory. Four quartz aerosols with different particle size are tested during the experiment, and the particle size measured from the ripple width is compared with the mass median size measured by an electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI). Both techniques have the same measurement tendency, and the measurement deviation by the ripple width method compared with ELPI is less than 15%. Finally, the measurement error of the real-time mass concentration is reduced from 38% to 18% with correction of the simultaneously measured particle size when particle size has changed.

Abstract:Rapid and reliable size measurement of single submicron particles (100-1000 nm) is important for quality control of particulate matter, biomedical research, environmental study, and drug delivery system development. Though direct measurement of the elastically scattered light from individual submicron particles represents the simplest method for particle size measurement, the inadequate instrument sensitivity and complicated relationship between scattering intensity and particle size render it a great challenge. Combining the superior sensitivity of a laboratory-built high-sensitivity flow cytometer (HSFCM) in the side scattering (SSC) detection of single nanoparticles and the great efforts in synthesizing 38 highly monodisperse silica spheres ranging from 180 to 880 nm with small size intervals, here we report the first comprehensive comparison between the experimentally measured and Mie theory calculated intensities of light scattered by single submicron particles. Good agreements were observed for both the silica spheres and polystyrene beads at both the perpendicular and the parallel polarizations of the incident laser beam. Compared with perpendicular polarization, parallel polarization can resolve differently sized beads better due to the continuously increased scattering intensity with particle size. The predictive capability of the simple numerical model constructed in present work can be exploited to allow us to foresee scattering behavior on flow cytometers. More importantly, the linear correlation between the measured and the calculated scattering intensities enables us to develop a method that can measure the particle size of submicron particles with the precision and accuracy of Mie theory rather than a calibration curve fitted by several sparsely separated size reference standards. Comparable sizing resolution and accuracy to those of electron microscopy were demonstrated for Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The as-developed method shows great potential in guiding the accurate size measurement of submicron particles.

Abstract:In production and scientific research, the research on the characteristics of submicron particles has attracted extensive attention, which is of great significance to the development of industrial production, medical and health inspection and other fields. In this paper, the characteristics of submicron particles are studied based on backlight scattering. By collecting the real-time waveform of the backscattering signal of particles with different particle sizes at different concentrations, the corresponding relationship between the particle concentration and the number of pulses was obtained. It is found that the peak value of the backscattered light energy has a good linear relationship with the particle size. The analysis of the signal distribution law of standard particle swarm with different particle size parameters found that it conformed to the lognormal distribution form.

Abstract:A new method is proposed in this paper to detect airborne nanoparticles, detecting the light scattering caused by both the particle and the surrounding molecules, which can surpass the limitations of conventional laser optical methods while maintaining simplicity and cost-effectiveness. This method is derived from a mathematical analysis that describes the particle light scattering phenomenon more exactly by including the influence of light scattered from surrounding gas molecules. The analysis shows that it is often too much of a simplification to consider only light scattering from the detected nanoparticle, because light scattering from the surrounding gas molecules, whether visible or invisible to the sensor, is important for nanoparticle detection. An image detection approach utilizing the light scattering from surrounding air molecules is described for the detection of airborne nanoparticles. Tests using monodisperse nanoparticles confirm that airborne particles of around 50 nm in size can even be detected using a low-cost testing device. This shows further that even when using a simple image processing code, captured particle light scattering images can be converted digitally into instantaneous particle counts or concentrations. The factors limiting conventional pulse detection are further discussed. This new method utilizes a simple static light scattering (SLS) approach to enable the development of new devices with better detection capabilities, paving the way for the further development of nanoparticle detection technology.

Measuring Particulate Concentration by Means of Scattered Light Scintillation

Abstract:A new method of measuring particulate concentration in flue gas is proposed. In the new method, the fluctuation of scattered light is used for calculating particulate mass concentration. Laboratory experiments show that the method can be applied to analyze the presence of dust particles in the flue gas stream. The benefits from the method are insensitivity to lens contamination and particle color change.

Abstract:As submicron particles play an important role in a variety of ecosystems that include aqueous, terrestrial, and atmospheric, a measurement system to quantify them is highly desirable. In pursuit of formulating and fabricating a system to size them using visible light, a system that collects multi-directional scattered light from individual particles is proposed. A prototype of the system was simulated, built, and tested via calibration with a set of polystyrene spheres in water with known sizes. Results indicate that the system can accurately resolve the size of these particles in the 0.1 to 0.8 μm range. The system incorporates a design that uses oblique illumination to collect scattered light over a large range of both forward and backward scatter angles. This is then followed by the calculation of a ratio of forward to backscattered light, integrated over a suitably defined range. The monotonic dependence of this ratio upon particle size leads to an accurate estimate of particle size. The method was explored first, using simulations, and followed with a working version. The sensitivity of the method to a range of relative refractive index was tested using simulations. The results indicate that the technique is relatively insensitive to this parameter and thus of potential use in the analysis of particles from a variety of ecosystems. The paper concludes with a discussion of a variety of pragmatic issues, including the required dynamic range as well as further research needed with environmentally relevant specimens to create a pragmatic instrument.
