Abstract:The rheological and heat-conduction constitutive models of micropolar fluids (MFs), which are important non-Newtonian fluids, have been, until now, characterized by simple linear expressions, and as a consequence, the non-Newtonian performance of such fluids could not be effectively captured. Here, we establish the novel nonlinear constitutive models of a micropolar fluid and apply them to boundary layer flow and heat transfer problems. The nonlinear power law function of angular velocity is represented in the new models by employing generalized “n-diffusion theory,” which has successfully described the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids, such as shear-thinning and shear-thickening fluids. These novel models may offer a new approach to the theoretical understanding of shear-thinning behavior and anomalous heat transfer caused by the collective micro-rotation effects in a MF with shear flow according to recent experiments. The nonlinear similarity equations with a power law form are derived and the approximate analytical solutions are obtained by the homotopy analysis method, which is in good agreement with the numerical solutions. The results indicate that non-Newtonian behaviors involving a MF depend substantially on the power exponent n and the modified material parameter K0 introduced by us. Furthermore, the relations of the engineering interest parameters, including local boundary layer thickness, local skin friction, and Nusselt number are found to be fitted by a quadratic polynomial to n with high precision, which enables the extraction of the rapid predictions from a complex nonlinear boundary-layer transport system.

Abstract:Built upon Ponte Castañeda’s method for a Cauchy medium, a variational method for evaluating the effective non-linear behavior of micropolar composites is proposed. The same as for a Cauchy medium, it is shown that the proposed variational method can be interpreted as the secant moduli method based on second-order stress and couple stress moments. With simple examples, the interplay between material length parameters of a higher-order medium and its geometrical dimensions and/or material constants is highlighted. By using the new variational method, the influence of reinforcement size on the yielding and strain hardening of particulate composites is examined in a simple and analytical manner. The predictions agree well with existing experimental data for selected particulate metal matrix composite systems. The particle size effect is found to be more pronounced for shear loading and hard particles.

Abstract:In this study, a theoretical basis is provided to finite element applications in boundary or boundary-initial value problems of micromorphic electroelastic solids. With the linear strain tensors and the electric intensity vector as the independent constitutive variables, the balance laws, linear constitutive equations and geometrical equations for linear micromorphic electroelastic solids are given according to the micromorphic theory. Families of generalized variational principles for linear micromorphic electroelasticity and electroelastodynamics including the minimum potential energy principle, the minimum complementary energy principle, the generalized Hu-Washizu principle, the generalized Hellinger-Reissner principle, and the Gurtin-typed variational principle are deduced by the semi-inverse method.

Abstract:A micro–macro elastoplastic micropolar continuum model for granular materials in the dry and pendular states is proposed on the basis of thermodynamics. The independent rotational degrees of freedom are considered besides the translational degrees of freedom for particles among the discrete particle system, which is described by the equivalent micropolar continuum. In the framework of the micropolar continuum, the elastic part and yield locus at macroscale are firstly rigorously deduced from the general elastic constitutive relation and Coulomb-type yield criterion at inter-particle contacts, respectively. Furthermore, the micro–macro elastoplastic micropolar continuum model is proposed, in which the model parameters have clear physical meanings. Subsequently, a return mapping algorithm for the integration of the micropolar elastoplastic model is presented. Finally, the proposed model, coded into ABAQUS software, is validated by comparisons of test and discrete element method results in terms of the stress–strain relation and strain localization phenomenon. The stress–strain relation and shear band modes are well reproduced, and the effects of the confining pressure and the partially saturated state on granular materials can also be correctly predicted by the proposed model.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical method for solving the two-dimensional problem of a polygonal linear viscoelastic domain containing an arbitrary number of non-overlapping circular holes of arbitrary sizes. The solution of the problem is based on the use of the correspondence principle. The governing equation for the problem in the Laplace domain is a complex hypersingular boundary integral equation written in terms of the unknown transformed displacements on the boundaries of the holes and the exterior boundaries of the finite body. No specific physical model is involved in the governing equation, which means that the method is capable of handling a variety of viscoelastic models. A truncated complex Fourier series with coefficients dependent on the transform parameter is used to approximate the unknown transformed displacements on the boundaries of the holes. A truncated complex series of Chebyshev polynomials with coefficients dependent on the transform parameter is used to approximate the unknown transformed displacements on the straight boundaries of the finite body. A system of linear algebraic equations is formed using the overspecification method. The viscoelastic stresses and displacements are calculated through the viscoelastic analogs of the Kolosov–Muskhelishvili potentials, and an analytical inverse Laplace transform is used to provide the time domain solution. Using the concept of representative volume, the effective viscoelastic properties of an equivalent homogeneous material are then found directly from the corresponding constitutive equations for the average field values.

Abstract:Two homogenization methods are presented for modeling the overall elasto-plastic behavior of composite materials, the first one is applied to the case where the nonlocal property of the constituents can be neglected, and the second one considers this nonlocal effect by idealizing the constituents as micropolar materials. The secant moduli method and Ponte Castaneda's variational method are discussed in these two homogenization methods.
The Stellar Halo Metallicity - Luminosity Relationship for Spiral Galaxies

Abstract:The stellar halos of spiral galaxies bear important chemo-dynamical signatures of galaxy formation. We present here the analysis of 89 semi-cosmological spiral galaxy simulations, spanning ~ 4 magnitudes in total galactic luminosity. These simulations sample a wide variety of merging histories and show significant dispersion in halo metallicity at a given total luminosity - more than a factor of ten in metallicity. Our preliminary analysis suggests that galaxies with a more extended merging history possess halos which have younger and more metal rich stellar populations than the stellar halos associated with galaxies with a more abbreviated assembly. A correlation between halo metallicity and its surface brightness has also been found, reflecting the correlation between halo metallicity and its stellar mass. Our simulations are compared with recent Hubble Space Telescope observations of resolved stellar halos in nearby spirals.

A New Micromechanical Approach of Micropolar Continuum Modeling for 2-D Periodic Cellular Material

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new united approach to formulate the equivalent micropolar constitutive relation of two-dimensional（2-D） periodic cellular material to capture its non-local properties and to explain the size effects in its structural analysis. The new united approach takes both the displacement compatibility and the equilibrium of forces and moments into consideration, where Taylor series expansion of the displacement and rotation fields and the extended averaging procedure with an explicit enforcement of equilibrium are adopted in the micromechanical analysis of a unit cell.In numerical examples, the effective micropolar constants obtained in this paper and others derived in the literature are used for the equivalent micropolar continuum simulation of cellular solids. The solutions from the equivalent analysis are compared with the discrete simulation solutions of the cellular solids. It is found that the micropolar constants developed in this paper give satisfying results of equivalent analysis for the periodic cellular material.
A deterministic-particle-based scheme for micro-macro viscoelastic flows

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a new method for discretizing micro-macro models of dilute polymeric fluids by integrating a finite element discretization for the macroscopic fluid dynamic equation with a deterministic variational particle scheme for the microscopic Fokker-Planck equation. To address challenges arising from micro-macro coupling, we employ a discrete energetic variational approach to derive a coarse-grained micro-macro model with a particle approximation first and then develop a particle-FEM discretization for the coarse-grained model. The accuracy of the proposed method is evaluated for a Hookean dumbbell model in a Couette flow by comparing the computed velocity field with existing analytical solutions. We also use our method to study nonlinear FENE dumbbell models in different scenarios, such as extension flow, pure shear flow, and lid-driven cavity flow. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed deterministic particle approach can accurately capture the various key rheological phenomena in the original FENE model, including hysteresis and {\delta}-function-like spike behavior in extension flows, velocity overshoot phenomenon in pure shear flow, symmetries breaking, vortex center shifting and vortices weakening in the lid-driven cavity flow, with a small number of particles.

The isotropic relaxed micromorphic model in polar coordinates and its application to an elastostatic axisymmetric extension problem

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the isotropic relaxed micromorphic model in polar coordinates and use this representation to solve explicitly an elastostatic axisymmetric extension problem involving a linear system of ordinary differential equations. To obtain an analytical solution, modified Bessel functions are utilized and closed-form solutions for the displacement and microdistortion are obtained. We show how certain limit cases (classical linear elasticity), which are naturally included in the relaxed micromorphic model, can be efficiently achieved. Furthermore, numerical results are calculated and the effects of various parameters are examined. The results can be used to calibrate and check corresponding finite element codes.

Abstract:Some variational micro-macro models are briefly reviewed: it is shown how, starting from the Taylor model and passing through the relaxed Taylor model, a consistent intermediate between Taylor's upper bound and the lower bound (Sachs or rather "static") model was obtained. This intermediate or "inhomogeneous" variational model (indeed, it generally predicts both strain and stress to be inhomogeneous) could offer a general alternative to self-consistent models. However, the implemented version was a rather empirical model (ARMINJON [1984]) with a less well-defined status. We present current progress in the implementation of the correct version.

Variational formulation of active nematics: theory and simulation

Abstract:The structure and dynamics of important biological quasi-two-dimensional systems, ranging from cytoskeletal gels to tissues, are controlled by nematic order, defects and activity. Continuum hydrodynamic descriptions combined with numerical simulations have been used to understand such complex systems, but the physical interpretation of different active nematic models and their applicability to specific systems is often unclear. For instance, most works rely on theories for incompressible liquid crystals but important active 2D nematic systems are compressible due to density variations or turnover. Here, we propose a theoretical and computational framework for possibly compressible and density-dependent 2D active nematic systems. This framework is based on Onsager's variational formalism to irreversible thermodynamics, according to which the dynamics result from a competition between free-energy release, dissipation and activity. We particularize this framework to recover a standard incompressible active nematic model and further formulate an alternative model for density-dependent active nemato-hydrodynamics. We show that the variational principle enables a direct and transparent derivation not only of the governing equations, but also of the finite element numerical scheme. We exercise this model in two representative examples of active nematodynamics relevant to the actin cytoskeleton during wound healing and to the dynamics of confined colonies of elongated cells.

Abstract:A variational model has been developed to investigate the coupled thermo-mechanical response of a three-dimensional continuum. The linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) of this problem are already well-known in the literature. However, in this paper, we avoid the use of the second principle of thermodynamics, basing the formulation only on a proper definition ( i ) of kinematic descriptors (the displacement and the entropic displacement), ( ii ) of the action functional (with kinetic, internal and external energy functions) and ( iii ) of the Rayleigh dissipation function. Thus, a Hamilton–Rayleigh variational principle is formulated, and the cited PDEs have been derived with a set of proper Boundary Conditions (BCs). Besides, the Lagrangian variational perspective has been expanded to analyze linear irreversible processes by generalizing Biot's formulation, namely, including thermal inertia in the kinetic energy definition. Specifically, this implies Cattaneo's law for heat conduction, and the well-known Lord–Shulman model for thermo-elastic anisotropic bodies is then deduced. The developed variational framework is ideal for the perspective of analyzing the thermo-mechanical problems with micromorphic and/or higher-order gradient continuum models, where the deduction of a coherent system of PDEs and BCs is, on the one hand, not straightforward and, on the other hand, natural within the presented variational deduction.

Abstract:Using micropolar generalized thermoviscoelastic theories, problems of reflection and refraction of magneto-thermoeviscoelastic waves at the interface between two viscoelastic media are studied when a uniform magnetic field permeates the media. Coefficient ratios of reflection and refraction are obtained using continuous boundary conditions. Some special cases are considered, i.e., the absence of micropolar and viscous effects. By numerical calculations, variations of the amplitude ratios of reflection and refraction coefficients with the angle of incidence are shown graphically for incident rotational and dilatational waves at the interface between two media (one medium is aluminium-epoxy micropolar iscoelastic material, and the other is magnesium crystal micropolar viscoelastic material). Comparing the generalized thermoelastic theories developed by Lord and Shulman (LS) and by Green and Lindsay (GL) in this paper to conventional dynamics (CD) theory the effects of a magnetic field and viscosity are shown numerically in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper we first employ the energetic variational method to derive a micro-macro model for compressible polymeric fluids. This model is a coupling of isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. We then prove the global in time existence of the smooth solution near the global equilibrium.

Abstract:Purpose The variational principle views a complex problem in an energy way, it gives good physical understanding of an iteration method, and the variational-based numerical methods always have a conservation scheme with a fast convergent rate. The purpose of this paper is to establish a variational principle for a fractal nano/microelectromechanical (N/MEMS) system. Design/methodology/approach This paper begins with an approximate variational principle in literature for the studied problem, and a genuine variational principle is obtained by the semi-inverse method. Findings The semi-inverse method is a good mathematical tool to the search for a genuine fractal variational formulation for the N/MEMS system. Research limitations/implications The established variational principle can be used for both analytical and numerical analyses of the N/MEMS systems, and it can be extended to some more complex cases. Practical implications The variational principle can be used for variational-based finite element methods and energy-based analytical methods. Originality/value The new and genuine variational principle is obtained. This paper discovers the missing piece of the puzzle for the establishment of a variational principle from governing equations for a complex problem by the semi-inverse method. The new variational theory opens a new direction in fractal MEMS systems.

Abstract:This paper reviews the fundamentals of micropolar fluid dynamics (MFD), and proposes a numerical scheme integrating Chorin’s projection method and time-centred split method (TCSM) for solving unsteady forms of MFD equations. It has been known that Navier–Stokes equations are incapable of explaining the phenomena at micro and nano scales. On the contrary, MFD can naturally pick up the physical phenomena at micro and nano scales owingto its additional degrees of freedom for gyration. In this study, the analytical and exact solutions of Couette and Hagen–Poiseuille flow are provided. Though this study is limited to the steady flow cases, the unsteady term in the MFD has been taken into account. This present work initiates the development of a general-purpose code of computational micropolar fluid dynamics (CMFD). The discretization scheme in space is demonstrated with nearly second-order accuracy on multiple meshes.
Some Variational Principles in Elastic Dielectric and Elastic Magnetic Materials

Abstract:The electroelastic and magnetoelastic analyses in the dielectric and magnetic materials should be studied together with their environments. From the first thermodynamic law a general variational theory is proposed. Some nonlinear variational principles with electric or magnetic Gibbs free energy and the complete governing equations, derived from these principles are given in this paper. The governing equations are complete and useful in engineering. It is noted that the virtual displacements do not only produce the variation of the strain, but also produce the variation of electric potential or magnetic potential. It is also noted that even in a small deformation the effect of the volume change on the electromagnetic field cannot be neglected. Just due to these two reasons the Maxwell stress can be naturally derived from the variational equation and it is unique. In these derivations new elctrostrictive and magnetostrictive coefficients are introduced and the anti-symmetric part of the stress can be naturally got. These principles are also useful for computational mechanics.
