Abstract:NURBS surfaces are among the most commonly used parametric surfaces in CAGD and Computer Graphics. This paper investigates shape modification of NURBS surfaces with geometric constraints, such as point, normal vector, and curve constraints. Two new methods are presented by constrained optimization and energy minimization. The former is based on minimizing changes in control net of surfaces, whereas the latter is based on strain energy minimization. By these two methods, we change control points and weights of an original surface, such that the modified surface satisfies the given constraints. Comparison results and practical examples are also given.

Abstract:The shape of non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) based free-form surface is determined by its control polygon. Shape modification is usually achieved by either individually changing the position or adjusting the weights at each of the control points. This paper proposed a unified method for shape modification of NURBS surface. The method provides a mathematical relationship between changes in the weight and location of control points to positional adjustment of surface points.

Abstract:Subdivision surface is an efficient geometric modelingtool that is generated by repeated approximation or interpolationfrom an initial control mesh. For each time of subdivisionthe old mesh will be split and the vertexes of the meshwill be refined for a new mesh. Most existing algorithms aimto construct a smooth subdivision surface by smoothing thevertexes of the split mesh. When some features are desired,special rules or parameters should often be applied.In this paper a new non-stationary subdivision method ispresented for surface modeling by recursive interpolationfrom an initial triangular control mesh. For each time ofsubdivision the mesh itself is a piecewise linear approximationto the final surface, and more details will be added tothe surface when the triangles have been split and replacedby more refined sub-triangles. We compute every interpolatededge vertex as a solution to the problem of least squarefitting of the edge and its neighboring triangles. Sharp featuresas well as flat regions can be kept well during subdivision.To obtain a visually smooth subdivision surface inthe limit, the normal at the vertexes of old meshes will beused as constraint for every time of subdivision. The mainadvantage of this new method is that the interpolated vertexesdepend on the local geometry of the mesh, but not thevalances of the mesh. The examples we have tested showthat the interpolating surfaces by this new method can inheritthe shape of initial course mesh more fairly and naturally.

Abstract:Rational curves and surfaces are powerful tools for shape representation and geometric modeling. However, the real weights are generally difficult to choose except for a few special cases such as representing conics. This paper presents an extension of rational curves and surfaces by replacing the real weights with matrices. The matrix weighted rational curves and surfaces have the same structures as the traditional rational curves and surfaces but the matrix weights can be defined in geometric ways. In particular, the weight matrices for the extended rational Bézier, NURBS or the generalized subdivision curves and surfaces are computed using the normal vectors specified at the control points. Similar to the effects of control points, the specified normals can be used to control the curve or the surface's shape efficiently. It is also shown that matrix weighted NURBS curves and surfaces can pass through their control points, thus curve or surface reconstruction by the extended NURBS model no longer needs solving any large system but just choosing control points and control normals from the input data.

Abstract:Firstly the representations of plane, sphere, cylinder, and cone surfaces are described, as well as the distance metrics of points to these surfaces. Then, the constraint equations to ensure the continuity between analytic surfaces and freeform surfaces are presented. Finally, the constrained fitting problem is solved by the penalty function method. Examples are given to illustrate applications of the proposed method in reverse design of industrial parts.

Abstract:A novel method to improve the efficiency of error compensation in free-form surface machining based on the Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) surface control points reconstruction is proposed in this article. With the presented method, a relatively small number of inspection points are needed to be measured for error compensation. The machined surface is obtained by reconstructing the control points of the designed surface based on the on-machine measurement data. The machining error of the surface is obtained by calculating the difference between the machined surface and the designed one. Then a compensate surface is achieved using the mirror symmetry model and surface modification method to compensate the machining error. Experimental validation for the milling of a NURBS surface shows that the machining accuracy of the surface is improved by 62.57% through use of the proposed method.

Abstract:A new NURBS-based shape optimization method is proposed. Most shape optimization studies consider only control point positions as design variables. Some shape optimization processes present problems with mesh quality and convergence when control points are constrained to a limited space. If the weights of the control points are regarded as additional design variables, it should be possible to attain a better degree of shape control. In this study, positions and weights of NURBS control points are used as design variables, and a shape optimization algorithm incorporates position optimization and weight optimization steps. This method is applied to shape optimization benchmarking problems to verify its advantages.

Abstract:An efficient algorithm is presented for modeling closed surfaces with bicubic Bezier patches. Starting from a control polyhedron with four-sided faces (not necessary planar), the algorithm fits the faces of the polyhedron with bicubic Bezier patches which are globally G1 connected. Methods for controlling and modifying the smooth closed surfaces are provided by adjusting certain weight factors. The proposed method is capable of dealing with control meshes of arbitrary topology and offers a simple and convenient way for modifying the shape of smooth closed surfaces locally and interactively. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of our method.

Abstract:A new free-form deformation method is presented in this paper. The deformation of an object is achieved by attaching it to two parametric surfaces, namely the shape surface S(u, ν) and the height surface H(u, ν). A control point or vertex of the object is projected onto the shape surface along its normal and a correspondence between the point and its projection on the shape surface is established. The point is then embedded into the parametric space defined by the shape surface. By regarding the height surface as a displacement function, the directed distance from the sample point to its projection on the shape surface can be further adjusted. The proposed method is independent of the representation of the underlying object. Experimental results show that the method is intuitive, easy to control and fast to run.

Abstract:Various difficulties in the manufacturing process of free-form roofs generated using the shape optimization process, which is also called structural morphology, can be resolved using the properties and methods of differential geometry. In this paper, a new structural morphology method is proposed for assembling a free-form grid surface using plate elements. The surface is an assembly of piecewise developable surfaces, and the grid frame also consists of plate components. A new directing condition is introduced as a constraint into the definition of developable surface using the (1-n)-Be ' zier surface. The control points of the directing Be ' zier curves are chosen as design variables. The developability conditions, directing conditions and continuity conditions are taken as the constraints in the optimization problem for minimizing the strain energy of the grid structure subjected to static loads. Effectiveness of the proposed method and the mechanical properties of the optimal structures are investigated in the numerical examples. It is shown that a new rational architectural shape integrating aesthetics, mechanics and constractability can be generated by using the new morphology method for free-form grid surface structure composed of plate elements.
NURBS Surface Fairing Based on Non-uniform B-spline Multi-resolution Wavelet Decomposition

Abstract:Non-uniform B-spline multi-resolution wavelet decomposition was applied to the fairing of NURBS surface. The global fairing direction was determined by global faring measure of two parametrical directions, and then the global fairing of surface was realized through global decomposition of surface. Local fairing of surface was realized by minimal region algorithm, in which the bad knot and fairing direction was determined by local fairing measure of knot pair. A region fairing method was proposed, in which the fairing region was specified by the user interactively. The problem of position and tangent preserving of end point was solved by adding constraints. The robustness of wavelet decomposition and possible singularity were presented. The application result in RE-SOFT, a reverse engineering software developed by Zhejiang University, shows that the fairing algorithm based on non-uniform B-spline wavelets decomposition can efficiently remove the bad points on surface and improve quality of the surface.

Abstract:Using an analogy between the control polygon and the bar network,four minimization models as deformation engines,i.e.minimization of the force variations,minimization of the forces,minimization of the bar length were,minimization of the node displacements,were investigated.These minimization problems were formulated as a unified mathematical form by using the nodes perturbation.So it is convenient to obtain a multiple combination of the minimization models which are used to satisfy the various shape requirements.The combination of minimization of the forces and minimization of the node displacements is used for the global and local smoothness.Experimental cases show that the proposed method can be widely applied to curve editing.

Abstract:The surface simplification of point-sampled geometry is one of the key preprocessing techniques for subsequent modeling and visualization algorithms. Based on geometry images, in the paper, we put forward a novel simplification algorithm for point- sampled surfaces. First the point-sampled surfaces are represented as geometry images r(phi,thetas), thetas (r, phi) phi (r, thetas) by projecting their spherical polar coordinates onto a plane. Based on geometry images, the k-nearest neighbors of sample points are then determined significantly fast and their curvatures are estimated. Finally, the point set surfaces are simplified according to the curvature and simplified density. In addition, the quality of the simplified point set surfaces is evaluated using the error measurement method based on the moving least squares surface. This algorithm is very fast, easy to implement and can create high-quality surface approximation with preserving the detail very well and control the simplified density conveniently.

Abstract:Taking advantage of orthogonality, locality and oscillation of non-uniform B-spline wavelets, a new fairing algorithm for rational B-spline curve was studied. Various knots selection methods were used to decompose the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) curve.The global and local fairing for the NURBS curve were implemented through approximation. The problem of position and tangent preserving at end points were dealt with by adding constraints. The applications in RE-SOFT,a reverse engineering software developed by Zhejiang University, showed that the fairing algorithm based on non-uniform B-spline wavelets decomposition can efficiently remove the bad points and improve the quality of the curve.

Abstract:Free-form deformation through the control of parametric surfaces is a flexible technique. With the old method objects to be deformed are embedded into the parametric space of the base surface directly and the undesired distortions are frequently introduced into the result. A homogeneous deformation method is proposed which successfully eliminates or alleviates the undesired distortion. The main difference between the proposed method and the existing methods is that the new one embeds objects into the parametric space of the base surface by isometric or locally isometric mapping using the planar development of the base surface as the intermediate medium, thus the object to be deformed can follow the shape of the base surface homogeneously. Implementation results indicate the potentials of the new approach.

Abstract:A new approach for computing NURBS offset curves and surfaces was proposed in this paper. First of all, the special NURBS curves and surfaces were recognized to be different with free form ones. The offsets of the special cases were precisely calculated according to their equations. The offset of free form NURBS curves and surfaces were solved using the following steps: (1) Decomposing the NURBS curve and surface into Bezier segments or surface patches; (2) Sampling Bezier segments or surface patches and removing duplicate points; (3) Interpolating the offset points and creating offset curve or surface; (4) Reducing the control points by removing all removable knots with a user defined tolerance. On the premise of keeping the shape of offset curves and surfaces, not only the degree of curve or surface could be freely controlled, but also less number of control points was needed and also duplicate knots were avoided. It was proved in practical engineering that the efficiency and precision were improved mush.
Real-Time Interactive Modification of B-Spline by PIA

Abstract:Interactive design is widely used for curve and surface editing in geometric design. Currently, the methods for B-spline curve and surface modification usually involve solving a constrained energy optimization problem, which costs lots of time when the number of control points of curves or surfaces is large. So it hardly achieves real-time response in the modification operation. In this paper, we propose a real-time surface modification method based on progressive-iteration approximation (PIA). Suppose we are given a B-spline surface and an interpolated point set as input. First, we determine the points on the given surface, which are closest to the interpolated points, and the control points closest to the interpolated points. Then, we construct the main difference vectors, diffuse them to all of the control points, and average the difference vectors corresponding to each control point. Lastly, the new surface is generated by one PIA iteration step. The limit surface of the iterations interpolates the give points. Thank to the advantage of the PIA, the modification method developed in this paper only needs to adjust some control points iteratively, without solving any constrained optimization problem. It makes our method have real-time performance, much faster than previous optimization-based method. Meanwhile, the quality of the surface generated by our method is similar to that by solving a constrained energy optimization problem.

Abstract:Shape simplification and re-sampling of underlying point-sampled surfaces under user-defined error bounds is an important and challenging issue. Based on the regular triangulation of the Gaussian sphere and the surface normals mapping onto the Gaussian sphere, a Gaussian sphere based re-sampling scheme is presented that generates a non-uniformly curvature-aware simplification of the given point-sampled model. Owing to the theoretical analysis of shape isophotic error metric for did that Gaussian sphere based sampling, the proposed simplification scheme provides a convenient way to control the re-sampling results under a user-specified error metric bound. The novel algorithm has been implemented and demonstrated on several examples.
