Abstract:A new C60-polyoxometalate compound was synthesized by a C60 derivative with a {SiW11Mn} cluster connecting through a coordination bond and characterized. The photocurrent response test showed great improvement of this new compound compared to C60 and the polyoxometalate precursor, which could be used as a potential photoelectric material.

Abstract:A graphite anode packed with a powder mixture of Sm2Co17, SiC, and graphite with a high atomic ratio of Sm/C was vaporized by direct current arc discharge under improved conditions including high helium pressure, low electric current, and wide electrode gap. The soot produced was successively extracted by CS2 and pyridine, and the extracts were processed through column chromatography on silica gel. Matrix-assisted laser desorption−ionization time-of-flight (MALD-TOF) mass spectrometry analysis indicated that a high yield of samarium endohedral fullerenes (Sm@C2n) with Sm@C84 as the most abundant one was achieved. Possible reasons leading to this high yield are discussed.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:A series of regioisomeric bis-methanofullerenes (diethyl[60]fullerenobisacetate) were prepared by reaction of the sulfonium ylide with C-60. Seven stable resultant regioisomers were completely isolated on a preparative HPLC and identified by FT-IR, UV-vis, TOF-MS, and H-1 and C-13 NMR measurements. The structures of these bisadducts were assigned based on 1) the relationship of the polarities of the regioisomers with the elution order from HPLC; 2) a comparison of their UV-vis spectra with those of corresponding Bingel-Hirsch bisadducts; and 3) the identification of their molecular symmetries by their H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The electrochemical properties of the resultant regioisomeric bismethanofullerene derivatives were investigated through cyclic voltammetry (CV). The bisadducts exhibited more negative reduction potential than the pristine C-60. Trans-2- and cis-3-bisadducts had the least negative potential E-1/2(1) of all the other bisadducts.

Abstract:The dinuclear complexes of 1,5-bis(1′-phenyl-3'-methyl-5'-pyrazolone-4')-l,5-pentanedione (H2L) with samarium, Sm2LL3 · 7H2OO (1) and Sm2LL3,, · 5DMF (2), have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structure of Sm2LL3 · 5DMF has been determined. In complex 2. each L bonds two samarium atoms with its two ;-diketona-diketonate groups. The L acts as a bridging ligand. There are two DMF molecules bonded to each samarium atom. The coordination number of the two samarium atoms is eight (six oxygen atoms from three B--diketonates and the other two oxygen atoms from two DMF carbonyls). The eight atoms around the samarium make up a distorted square antiprism configuration. There are large differences between coordinated and uncoordinated DMF molecules.

Abstract:2,5-Dimethoxycarbonyl[60]fulleropyrrolidine (1) is acylated with various chlorocarbonyl compounds to give fullerene derivatives with the general formula C60(MeOOCCH)2NC(O)R, R = (CH2)5Br, (CH2)8C(O)Cl (3), (CH2)4C(O)Cl, or cis-C6H4(C(O)Cl. The monoacylated sebacoyl derivative 3 readily reacts with alcohols and amines such as methanol, diethylamine, glycine methyl ester, and aza-18-crown-6 through the remaining chlorocarbonyl group. Chromatography of 3 on silica gel converts it into the corresponding acid C60(MeOOCCH)2NC(O)(CH2)8COOH (4). Treating 4 with PCl5 regenerates the precursor 3 quantitatively. Piperazine reacts with 4 in the presence of DCC and BtOH to form a bisfullerene derivative in which two sebacoyl chains and the piperazine act as the bridge between two molecules of 1. Other molecules with multifunctional groups react with 4 similarly to form multifullerene derivatives. Abstract:Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80) has been separated from the carbon soot produced by electrical arc vaporization of graphite rods doped with Sm(2)O(3) and purified. Its structure has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction using cocrystals obtained from either Ni(II)(octaethylporphyrin) (Ni(II)(OEP)) to form Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80)·Ni(II)(OEP)·1.68(toluene)·0.32(benzene) or bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (ET) to produce Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80)·ET·0.5(toluene). Thus, this study offers the first opportunity to compare a common endohedral fullerene in two different cocrystals. Both cocrystals provide consistent information on the basic structure of Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80) but show that the distribution of samarium ion sites inside the carbon cage depends upon whether Ni(II)(OEP) or ET is present. The samarium ion is disordered in both structures, but the prominent sites lie slightly off the 2-fold symmetry axis of the cage. Computational studies at the B3LYP level indicate that Sm@C(2v)(3)-C(80) is more stable than any of the other six isomers of Sm@C(80) that obey the isolated pentagon rule (IPR). The surface electrostatic potential of the interacting components in the cocrystals has been examined to identify factors responsible for the ordering of the fullerene cages. The regions of the Ni(II)(OEP) or ET molecules that are closest to the fullerene display negative potential, while the corresponding regions of the endohedral fullerene show positive potential in a consistent fashion in both cocrystals.

Abstract:1,2-Dihydromethano[60]fullerene and its congeners have attracted much interest, but they have been synthesized only in very low yields because of several insurmountable problems. A new three-stage synthesis involving addition of a silylmethylmagnesium chloride to [60]- and [70]fullerene and oxidation of the anionic intermediate with CuCl(2) afforded the methano[60]- and methano[70]fullerenes in 90% and 70% overall yield, respectively. The reaction with 1,4-diorgano[60]fullerene also proceeded smoothly to give a diastereomerically pure 56-π-electron fullerene that has a higher LUMO level than the parent fullerene and gave a higher open-circuit voltage and better power conversion efficiency when fabricated into an organic photovoltaic device.

Abstract:Solvent-free reactions of C-60 with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide ( CBr4), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C-60 with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 to afford cyclopropane derivative 2. In the presence of CBr4, methanofullerenes 2, 7, 8 and 9 could be obtained by the direct reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3. More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts 10 and 11 were produced by the reaction of C-60 with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na2CO3 under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C-60 derivatives 18, 19 and 20 were obtained from the reaction of C-60 with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives 27, 28 and 29. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.

Abstract:Aminopolycarboxylic esters react with C-60 under photolysis to produce fullerene multicarboxylates. Irradiation of tetramethyl ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with C-60 yields the EDTA-containing fullerene monoadduct C-60(MeOOCCH)(2)NCH2CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2). In addition, several other C-60 monoadducts are also isolated and characterized, including compounds due to EDTA fragmentation. Similar results are observed with pentamethyldimethylenetriaminepentaaceta (DTPA). When partially methylated nitrilotriacetic acid is irradiated with C-60, decarboxylation occurs and organo dihydrofullerene derivatives such as C-60(H)(CH2N(CH2COOMe)(2)) are formed. Radical mechanisms are proposed for both types of photoreactions. The fullerene derivatives are characterized by their spectroscopic data. Photoreactions of C-60 with other analogous molecules also support the conclusions.

Abstract:A method for the facile synthesis of tetraaryl-trimethylsilylmethyl-hydro[60]fullerenes, C60Ar4(CH2SiMeR)H, has been developed in which readily prepared anionic mono(silylmethyl) fullerene is subjected to reaction conditions for organocopper-mediated multiple addition. Penta(organo)fullerene derivatives bearing different substituents and diverse functionality were synthesized in moderate to good yield under simple and mild reaction conditions. Further organic and organometallic transformations of these fullerenes allowed us to synthesize transition-metal complexes and a new methanofullerene derivative, 1,9-methano-6,12,15,18-tetraphenyl[60]fullerene, C60Ph4(CH2).

Abstract:The epoxy moiety in a fullerene mixed peroxide can be opened regioselectively by various Lewis acids to form halohydrin fullerene derivatives. The first iodofullerene was obtained by treating the fullerene epoxide with triphenylphosphine and iodine. A single-crystal structure of the chlorohydrin derivative supports the results.

Abstract:Well-defined low-valent molecular rare-earth metal hydrides are rare, and limited to Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ centers. Here, we report the first example of divalent samarium(II) hydrido complex [(Cp Ar5 )Sm II (μ-H)(DABCO)] 2 ( 4 ) (Cp Ar5 = C 5 Ar 5 , Ar = 3,5-iPr 2 -C 6 H 3 ; DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclooctane) supported by a super-bulky penta-arylcyclopentadienyl ligand, resulting from the hydrogenolysis of the samarium(II) alkyl complex [(Cp Ar5 )Sm II {CH(SiMe 3 ) 2 }(DABCO)] ( 3 ). Complex 4 exhibits multi-electron redox reactivity toward a varity of substrates. Exposure of complex 4 with CO 2 results in trivalent samarium(III) mixed bis- formate/carbonate complex [(Cp Ar5 )Sm III (μ-ƞ 2 :ƞ 1 -O 2 CH)(μ-ƞ 2 :ƞ 2 -CO 3 )(μ-ƞ 1 :ƞ 1 -O 2 CH)Sm III (Cp Ar5 )(DABCO)] ( 8 ), mediated by hydride insertion and reductive disproportionation reactions. Complex 4 shows four-electron reduction toward four equivalents of CS 2 to afford trivalent samarium(III) bis-trithiocarbonate complex [(Cp Ar 5 )Sm III (μ-ƞ 2 :ƞ 2 -CS 3 )(DABCO)] 2 ( 9 ). Mechanistic study for the formation of complex 8 was carried out by DFT calculations.
