Abstract:Two diphenyl ether bridged dinuclear titanocenes, (C5H5TiCl2)(2){[(RC5H3)CH2](p-C6H4)O(C6H4-p) [CH2(C5H3R)] [R = H(5), Me(6)] have been synthesized and characterized by H-1-NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO), 5 and 6 are efficient catalysts for ethylene polymerization. The influences of the polymerization conditions such as [MAO]/[Cat] molar ratio, catalyst concentration, polymerization temperature and time have been studied in detail. Compounds 5 and 6 produce 105 g polyethylene (PE)/(mol Ti h), which is in the same range as that produced by the binuclear titanocenes {(C5H5TiCl2)(2)[(C5H4CH2) (p-C6H4)(C6H4-p)(CH2C5H4)]} (7) and (C5H5TiCl2)(2)(C5H4CH2 CH2OCH2 CH2C5H4) (8). However, the molecular weight of PE is somewhat higher than that of PE using 7 and 8. The high temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results show that the molecular weight distributions of PE produced by 5 and 6 (MWD = 6.17 and 7.56) were obviously broader than those of PE produced by 7 (MWD = 4.28) and 8 (MWD = 5.90). The melting points of the PE produced by 5 and 6 are higher than 132 degrees C, indicating a highly linear and highly crystalline PE. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Two new FI complexes, bis[N-(3-allylsalicylidene)-pentafluoroanilinato]titanium(IV) dichloride (AFI) and bis[N-(3-propylsalicylidene)-pentafluoroanilinato]titanium(IV) dichloride (PFI) were designed and synthesized as catalysts for living polymerization of ethylene. The two complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and X-ray single diffraction. The catalysts were evaluated in ethylene polymerization under atmospheric pressure. It was found that both catalysts exhibited high activity and good livingness. The effects of temperature and dMAO/Ti molar ratio on the polymerization behavior of AFI were studied in detail. Abstract:Five novel binuclear titanocenes (CpTiCl2)2[(C5H4)CH2(p-C6H4)O(CH2)nO(C6H4-p)CH2(C5H4)] (n=2–6) (16–20) with the bridge combination of rigid and flexible segment were synthesized and characterized. In the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO), the behaviors of these complexes toward ethylene polymerization were investigated. The results show that their catalytic behaviors are highly dependent on the length of flexible segment and polymerization conditions. With the length of flexible segment becoming longer, the catalytic activity increases, whereas the molecular weight (MW) of the produced polyethylene (PE) decreases. In addition, the longer flexible segment is favorable to produce PE with broader molecular weight distribution (MWD).

Abstract:A series of asymmetric binuclear titanocenes linked by alkyl benzyl ethers p-[(C5H5TiCl2)C5H4CH2]C6H4O(CH2)n[C5H4(TiCl2C5H5)] (n=2–5) (13–16) were synthesized, characterized and used as catalysts for ethylene polymerization. All these complexes are favorable for producing polyolefins with a broad molecular weight distribution and high melting points.

Abstract:Five new double silylene-bridged binuclear titanium complexes were synthesized by the reaction of RCpTiCl3 and Li2[μ,μ-(SiMe2)2 (C5H3)2] in toluene. They were all well characterized. These complexes activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO) are highly active catalysts (2.33 × 105 g PE/mol Cat h) for the polymerization of ethylene even at low Al/Ti (Al/Ti = 300). The molecular weight distribution of the polymer indicates broad or bimodal (MWD = 26.76) distribution.

Abstract:New unbridged zirconocene complexes, bis(1,2-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (3) and bis(4-methy-1,2-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (4) have been synthesized in high yield by reaction of ZrCl4 with the lithium salt of 1,2-diphenylcyclopentadiene (1) or 4-methyl-1,2-diphenylcyclopentadiene (2), respectively. X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals both complexes are in racemic-like conformation with near C2 symmetry in solid state. When activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), 3 and 4 exhibit moderate catalytic activities for ethylene polymerization at relatively low Al:Zr ratios, producing high molecular weight (>106) polyethylenes with high melting transition temperatures. Atactic propylene oligomers with average molecular weight of ∼103 g mol−1 were produced by both 3 and 4 at relatively high catalytic activities upon activation with MAO.

Abstract:Two new chiral pre-ligands, (R)-3,3'-bis(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-2,2'-bismethoxy-1,1'-bisnaphthalene (1) and (R)-3-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl-2,2'-bismethoxy-1,1'-bisnaphthalene (2), were synthesized by reaction of (R)-3,3'-dilithium-2,2'-bismethoxy-1,1'-bisnaphthalene with 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-2-cyclopentenone at room temperature. Treatment of the pre-ligands 1 and 2 with butyllithium and Me(3)SiCl first, and subsequently with TiCl(4) (2 and 1 equiv for 1 and 2, respectively) afforded a binuclear complex (R)-3,3'-bis[(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)trichlorotitanium]-2,2'-bismethoxy-1,1'-bisnaphthalene (3) and a mononuclear complex (R)-3-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)trichlorotitanium-2,2'-bismethoxy-1,1'-bisnaphthalene (4) in moderate yields. Complexes 3 and 4 were further converted into constrained geometry complexes (R)-1,1'-bis{2,2'-naphthoxy-3,3'-bis[(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)dibromotitanium]} (5) and (R)-1-(2-naphthoxy)-1'-(2'-naphthol)-3-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)dibromotitanium (6) by treatment with BBr(3). The pre-ligands 1 and 2 were characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR and high resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS), and the new titanium complexes 3-6 were characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR and elemental analyses. Molecular structures of 4, 5, and 6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes 4, 5, and 6 all have a pseudo-octahedral coordination environment and adopt a three-legged piano stool geometry around the titanium atom in their solid state structures. When activated with Al(i)Bu(3) and Ph(3)CB(C(6)F(5))(4), the chiral complexes 5 and 6 show moderate catalytic activities for propylene, 1-hexene, and 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) polymerization and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization. The polymers produced by the chiral 5/(i)Bu(3)Al/Ph(3)CB(C(6)F(5))(4) catalyst system from the 1-hexene, and ENB polymerization and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization with high comonomer contents exhibit optical activity.

Abstract:Half-titanocenes are well known to show high activity for ethylene polymerization and good capability for copolymerization of ethylene with other olefins, and the ancillary ligands can crucially affect the catalytic performance. In this paper, the mechanisms of ethylene polymerization catalyzed by three half-metallocenes, (η5-C5Me5)TiCl2(O-2,6-iPr2C6H3) (1), (η5-C5Me5)TiCl2(N=CtBu2) (2) and [Me2Si(η5-C5Me4)(NtBu)]TiCl2 (3), have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) method. At the initiation stage, a higher free energy barrier was determined for complex 1, probably due to the presence of electronegative O atom in phenoxy ligand. At the propagation stage, front-side insertion of the second ethylene is kinetically more favorable than back-side insertion for complexes 1 and 2, while both side insertion orientations are comparable for complex 3. The energy decomposition showed that the bridged cyclopentadienyl amide ligand could enhance the rigidity of the active species as suggested by the lowest deformation energy derived from 3. At the chain termination stage, β-H transfer was calculated to be a dominant chain termination route over β-H elimination, presumably owing to the thermodynamic perspective.

Abstract:The oxo-bridged monocyclopentadienyl titanium complexes (1,2-Ph2-4-R-CpTiCl2)2(μ-O) (R=Me (3), n-Bu (4)), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Both complexes show moderate catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization when activated with Al(iBu)3 and Ph3C+B(C6F5)4-, and those catalyst systems produces polyethylenes with moderate molecular weights and melting transition temperatures. The 3 or 4/MAO systems also show good catalytic performance for styrene polymerization in terms of catalytic activity and syndiotacticity.

Abstract:The synthesis of four new bidentate ligands, 2-(3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)-6-phenylphenol ((DCPP)H-2, 7), 2-(3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)-6-tert-butylphenol ((DCBP)H2, 8), 2-(3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)-4, 6-di-tert-butylphenol (DCDBP)H-2, 9), and 2-(3,4-diphenyleyclopentadienyl)-6-methylphenol ((DCMP)H2, 10), as well as their corresponding constrained geometry cyclopentadienyl-phenoxytitanium dichlorides ((DCPP)TiCl2 (11), (DCBP)TiCl2 (12), (DCDBP)TiCl2 (13), and (DCMP)TiCl2 (14)), are described. Complexes 11-14 were synthesized from the reaction of TiCl, with the corresponding dilithio salt of the ligand. Molecular structures of 11 and 12 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The Cp(cent)-Ti-O angles of 107.4degrees for 11 and 106.7degrees for 12 reveal their sterically open features as catalyst precursors. When activated with (Bu3Al)-Bu-i and Ph3C+B(C6F5)(4)(-), complexes 11-14 exhibit reasonable catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization, producing polyethylenes with moderate molecular weights and melt transition temperatures. Compounds 12 and 13 show good catalytic activity for copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene.

Abstract:Two binuclear oxo-bridged half-titanocene complexes, µ-oxo-bis[(1-aryl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)dichlorotitanium] [(ArMe4CpTiCl2)2O, Ar = 4- i PrC6H4 (3), 4- t BuC6H4 (4)], have been prepared by the treatment of 1-aryl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyltitanium trichloride [ArMe4CpTiCl3, Ar = 4- i PrC6H4 (1), 4- t BuC6H4 (2)] with 0.5 equiv of H2O. Complexes 3 and 4 have been characterized by elemental analysis and 1H- and 13C-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance; NMR) spectroscopies, and their molecular structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. When activated with i Bu3Al and Ph3CB(C6F5)4, complexes 3 and 4 both exhibit reasonable catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization (90 × 103 to 280 × 103 kg PE (mol Ti)−1 bar−1 h−1), producing polyethylenes with moderate molecular weight.

Abstract:The copolymerizations of ethylene and cyclopentene with bis(beta-enamino-ketonato) titanium complexes {[(Ph)NC(R-2)CHC(R-1)O](2)TiCl2; R-1 = CF3 and R-2 = CH3 for la, R-1 = Ph and R-2 = CF3 for 1b; and R-1 = t-Bu and R-2 = CF3 for 1c} activated with modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst were investigated. High-molecular-weight copolymers with cis-1,2-cyclopentene units were obtained. The catalyst activity, cyclopentene incorporation, polymer molecular weight, and polydispersity could be controlled over a wide range through the variation of the catalyst structure and reaction parameters, such as the Al/Ti molar ratio, cyclopentene feed concentration, and polymerization reaction temperature. The complex 1b/MAMO catalyst system exhibited the characteristics of a quasi-living ethylene polymerization and an ethylene-cyclopentene copolymerization and allowed the synthesis of polyethylene-block-poly(ethylene-co-cyclopentene) diblock copolymer. Abstract:A series of doubly bridged dinuclear titanium and zirconium complexes (Me2C)(Me2E)(C5H3)2(Cp′MCl2)2 [E=Si, Cp′=C5H5, M=Ti (1), Zr (2); E=Ge, Cp′=C5H5, M=Ti (3), Zr (4); Cp′=C5Me4H, M=Zr, E=Si (5), Ge (6)] and (Me2SiOSiMe2)2(C5H3)2(Cp′MCl2)2 [Cp′=C5H5, M=Ti (7), Zr (8); Cp′=C5Me4H, M=Zr (9)] were synthesized by the reaction of the lithium compounds of the corresponding doubly bridged cyclopentadienyl ligands with CpTiCl3, CpZrCl3(THF)2 or C5Me4HZrCl3, respectively. These complexes were characterized by 1H-NMR, MS and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of 4 was determined by the X-ray diffraction. Abstract:The polymer-supported TiC14 catalyst was synthesized and the catalytic features in the polymerization of ethylene and copolymerization of ethylene, propylene and butadiene in the presence of cocatalyst (Et3A1) were studied. The supported catalyst and obtained polymers were characterized by IR, DSC, elemental analysis and viscosity molecular weight measurements.
Half-titanocenes catalysts containing phosphine nitrogen ligands for ethylene and ethylene-propylene polymerization

Abstract:Two novel half-titanocenes catalysts containing phosphine nitrogen ligands were synthesized. The impact of the complex concentration, feedstock composition, molar ratio of Al/Ti, reaction time and pressure were investigated on ethylene polymerization and ethylene-propylene(E/P)copolymerization catalyzed by half-titanocenes/methyl aluminoxane/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] catalytic system as well as on the composition, relative molecular mass and distribution of the polymers. The results show that the catalysts prepared exhibit high activity of 0.62×106 g/(mol·h)in ethylene polymerization, moreover, the activity of the catalysts is similar to metallocene catalyst in E/P polymerization. The E/P copolymer prepared by the catalyst system feature single cite catalyst of high molecular mass with narrow molecular mass distribution. The research on the sequence of the copolymer indicates that rE×rP is about 1, the copolymers prepared are random.
Synthesis of Oxygen-bridged Binuclear Titanium and Nickel Complexes and Application in Catalysis of Bimodal Polyethylene

Abstract:To explore the potential of oxygen. bridged bisphosphinimine titanium and nickel complexes possessing bimetallic centers as catalysts for olefin polymerization, two oxygen. bridged diphosphorus compounds, named bis-(2-diphenylphosphino) phenylether(1a) and 9,9-dimethyl. 4,6-bis(diphenylphosphi-no) xanthene (1b), were synthesized. After Staudinger reaction with Me3SiN3 in toluene under reflux, compound 1a with a flexible diphenyl ether bridge was converted into the bisphosphinimine precusor, while compound 1b with a rigid xanthene bridge was transformed into the monophosphinimine one. Subsequently, the dehalosilylation with CpTiCl3 afforded the corresponding phosphinimine titanium complexes 3a and 3b, respectively. Single titanium center complex 3b further reacts with NiBr2(DME) to translate into titaniumnickel heteronuclear bimetallic complex 4b. The structures of the complexes were characterized by H-1, C-13, P-31 NMR and elemental analyses. And the molecular structures of complexes 3a and 4b were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. When activated by the methylaluminoxane(MAO), complexes 3a and 4b displayed high catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization. The bimetallic titanium complex 3a produced a wide molecular weight distribution polyethylene product, while the titanium-nickel heteronuclear bimetallic complex 4b gave rise to the bimodal polyethylene product.
