Abstract:Reaction of a sulfur, selenium, or tellurium alkaline aqueous solution and Pb(CH3COO)2·3H2O aqueous solution produces nanocrystalline lead chalcogenides PbE (E = S, Se, or Te) with a cubic phase at low temperature under atmospheric pressure. The products are characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The average particle size is in the range 20–35 nm. The XPS analysis indicates that the stability of the product surface in air decreases in the order PbS, PbSe, and PbTe. An advantage of this synthesis method is that the PbE crystallizes well in the alkaline solution. The mechanism for the formation of the lead chalcogenides is discussed.

Abstract:Lead sulfide (PbS) nanorods with a high aspect ratio were prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the product was rod-like PbS with cubic rock-salt structure. Further characterizations by selected area. electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the PbS nanorods were single crystalline in nature. Furthermore, the mechanism and critical factors for the hydrothermal synthesis of the nanorods have been discussed.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of lead(II) complexes of 2-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene) hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (1) and 2-(1-(thiophen-2-yl) ethylene) hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (2), which were used as single source precursors in hexadecylamine (HDA) and oleylamine (OLA) at 190, 230, and 270°C to synthesize lead(II) sulfide nanoparticles. Optical studies by UV–vis analysis showed a general blue shift in the absorption band edge of the PbS nanoparticles (NPs) with energy bandgaps determined by Tauc's plots ranging from 2.15 to 3.11 eV. The development of NPs with a variety of morphologies that changed with temperature and precursor type was demonstrated by morphological characterization using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Cubic, rod-shaped, and nearly spherical-shaped PbS were formed. Powder X-ray diffraction (p-XRD) structural studies revealed the face-centered cubic structure of PbS nanoparticles. The elements contained in the nanoparticles were identified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). These results suggest that the size, shape, and optical properties of the synthesized PbS NPs were affected by reaction temperature, capping group, and precursor type. Under UV irradiation, the photocatalytic activity of HDA-capped PbS nanoparticles on the degradation of methylene blue dye ranged from 28.3% to 60.0%, with lead sulfide nanoparticle obtained by thermolysis of complex (1) at 230°C showing the highest photocatalytic efficiency (60.0%).

Abstract:Lead titanate nanostructures with different phases and morphologies, layered hexagonal PbTiO2(CO3)(0.3)- (NO3)(0.35)(OH) nanosheets, pyrochlore Pb2Ti2O6 nanodendites, pre-perovskite PbTiO3 nanofibres and perovskite PbTiO3 nanoplates, have been synthesized via a conventional hydrothermal route assisted with different concentrations of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) were employed to characterize the phase, morphology and growth behavior of the synthesized samples. The results reveal that at low TMAH concentration the obtained samples are mainly of PbTiO2(CO3)(0.3)(NO3)(0.35)(OH) nanosheets. With the TMAH concentration increasing, the obtained samples change to pyrochlore Pb2Ti2O6 nanodendites, pre-perovskite PbTiO3 nanofibres and perovskite PbTiO3 nanoplates in turn. With the basis of the experimental results, the phase- and morphology-evolution mechanism of the lead titanate nanostructures is discussed by combining the analysis of the lattice structure feature and the properties of TMAH.
Highly Ordered Lamellar Mesostructure of Nanocrystalline PbSO4 Prepared by Hydrothermal Treatment

Abstract:A lamellar PbSO4 mesophase with well-crystallized walls was synthesized using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a template and bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide (TESPTS) as a structure-stabilizing agent through hydrothermal treatment method. The obtained layered mesostructure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and IR spectrum. The photoluminescence properties of the products were also investigated. The sample gives two UV emission bands centered at 340 and 360 nm and four visible light emission bands in the range of 400-500 nm using an excitation wavelength of 270 nm. The results have demonstrated that TESPTS with more hydrophobic character could be responsible for the formation of this stabilized lamellar PbSO4 mesophase. A possible formation mechanism for the lamellar PbSO4 mesostructure was also proposed. Such lamellar mesostructures could provide a useful precursor for potential applications of PbSO4.

Abstract:Hierarchical eight-arm, star-shaped PbS single crystals have been successfully synthesized by the controlled release of sulfide ions from thioacetamide (TAA) at 80 °C in aqueous solutions of lead acetate and acetic acid. The unique star-shaped PbS crystals have eight symmetric arms along the 〈111〉 directions, each of which shows a trident-like, dendritic structure and consists of parallel PbS nanoleaflets. It has been revealed that the presence of acetate ions as well as appropriate pH and temperature are crucial for the formation of the unusual star-shaped PbS crystals. Moreover, other morphologies of PbS nanocrystals, such as nanorods, nanostrips, and nanosheets, have been obtained facilely at 40 °C by using similar synthetic procedures.

Abstract:PbS nanocrystals with octahedron shape are synthesized by a low temperature approach with presence of cation/anion surfactants in aqueous solution. CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) based on these novel octahedron shaped PbS counter electrodes (CEs) are fabricated for the first time, achieving PCE of 1.54%. It is observed that the octahedron shaped PbS CE shows higher electrocatalytic activity compared with the Pt CE, indicating that the PbS nanocrystals with a uniformly distributed size is a superior candidate as CEs for QDSSCs application. This work may provide new route for preparing PbS from aqueous solvent medium through a simple synthesis route.

Abstract:Shape controlled synthesis of PbS nanoparticles, cubes, and nanowires has been realized by a so-called solvothermal–microemulsion technique in a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/hexane/hexanol/water microemulsion system using different sulfur source. The effect of different sulfur source and temperature on the shape of PbS nanocrystallites was investigated. The results demonstrated that the combination of solvothermal process and microemulsion technique could provide a useful tool for the synthesis of other nanocrysals with unusual shape and structures.

Abstract:We present a colloidal synthesis strategy to obtain single-crystalline PbS nanorings. By controlling the ripening process in the presence of halide ions, a transformation of initial PbS nanosheets to frame-like structures and finally to nanorings was achieved. We found that the competing ligands oleic acid, oleate and halide ions play an important role in the formation of these nanostructures. Therefore, we propose a formation mechanism based on a thermally induced ripening of crystal facets dependent on the surface passivation. With this method, it became possible to synthesize colloidal nanorings of cubic crystal phase galena PbS. The synthesis was followed via TEM and the products are characterized by XRD, AFM and STEM tomography. Control of the initial nanoframe morphology allows adjusting the later nanoring dimensions.

Abstract:Large-scale PbS crystals in sub-micrometer/nanometer dimensions with various morphologies, such as cubes, dendrites, stars, and wires, were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Pb(NO3)2, thiourea, and capping agents like hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were used as precursors for the syntheses. The morphology, structure, and phase composition of PbS submicro-/nano-structures were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The influence of different capping agents on the growth of these PbS crystals was investigated and optimized. The formation mechanisms of these PbS crystals were proposed, which could give a proper explanation on the evolution of the crystal growth and may also pave the way to shape-controlled synthesis of other inorganic crystals with versatile complex structures via this facile hydrothermal method.

Abstract:Single-crystalline PbCrO4 nanorods, nanowires and amorphous PbCr4O13 nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of L-lysine. The morphology and crystal structure of the products can be easily adjusted by changing the reaction temperature. The PbCr4O13/PbS nanocomposites can be further synthesized by using the amorphous nanotubes as template and introducing S ions to the reaction system. The morphology and structure of the lead chromate 1D nanostructures and the PbCr4O13/PbS nanocomposites were systematically studied by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM. The optical properties of the final products were also investigated in detail.

Abstract:Lead sulfide nanocrystals have been prepared by two novel routes in microwave heating and ultrasonic irradiation. In the experiments, lead acetate and thiourea are used as lead source and sulfur source, respectively. Different size and morphology of lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals can be obtained by using ethanol, distilled water, ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol-200 as solvents. X-ray diffraction results show that the as-prepared PbS nanocrystals have a cubic structure. Probable mechanisms for the formation of PbS particles are also proposed.

Abstract:PbS nanocubes have been synthesized by one-step solid-state reaction between Pb(DS)2 (DS: dodecylsulfate anion) and Na2S·9H2O. The nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis absorption spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Abstract:In this study, a series of PbS polyhedra were synthesized through hydrothermal decomposition of the as-formed lead diethyldithiocarbamate (Pb-DDTC) single-source precursor in its precursor solution. Through extensive experiments, it was concluded that the amount of poly-(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), DDTC and the reaction time had major effects on the shapes of the as-synthesized PbS crystals. Sub-micro sized cuboctahedrons and cubes were selectively obtained by manipulating the concentration of PVP and the reaction time. Possible growth mechanism for the shape controlled synthesis of PbS crystals was briefly discussed.

Abstract:Star-shaped and rod-like PbS crystals have been successfully prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that the PbS crystals are of the cubic rock-salt structure and well formed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations show that the morphology of PbS nanocrystals is easily controlled according to sulphur source, lead source, and pH value. Furthermore, the paper gives a preliminary presntation of the mechanism and the critical role of the TGA-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of PbS nanorods.

Abstract:We present a surfactant-assisted solvothermal approach for the controllable synthesis of a PbS nanocrystal at low temperature (85 degrees C). Nanotubes (400 nm in length with an outer diameter of 30 nm), bundle-like long nanorods (about 5-15 mu m long and an average diameter of 100 nm), nanowires (5-20 mu m in length and with a diameter of 20-50 nm), short nanorods (100-300 nm in length and an axial ratio of 5-10), nanoparticles (25 nm in width with an aspect ratio of 2), and nanocubes (a short axis length of 10 nm and a long axis length of 15 nm) were successfully prepared and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction pattern. A series of experimental results indicated that several experimental factors, such as AOT concentration, ratio of [water]/[surfactant], reaction time, and ratio of the reagents, play key roles in the final morphologies of PbS. Possible formation mechanisms of PbS nanorods and nanotubes were proposed.

Abstract:Symmetric hierarchical PbTe superstructures, including hopper cubes, flower-like structures, and dendritic structures, have been successfully fabricated by a facile alkaline hydrothermal method. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations show that the PbTe hierarchical structures can be controlled by changing reaction temperature, reaction time, concentration of NaOH, and the kind of surfactants. The formation mechanism was investigated on the basis of the time-dependent experiment and the shape evolution. It is proposed that the formation of PbTe hopper cubic structures is due to the Berg effect induced concentration fluctuation of reactant ions, and the instability of growing fronts of crystals leads to the hierarchical dendritic morphologies. NaOH plays a crucial role in the formation stage. The Fourier transform infrared spectrum analysis showed that the band gap value of the PbTe hierarchical microcrystals was about 0.29 eV.
