Abstract:We study the transport properties of the nanostructures consisting of magnetic barriers produced by the deposition of ferromagnetic stripes on heterostructures. It is shown that the electron tunneling through multiple-barrier magnetic structures exhibits complicated resonant features. Due to the averaging of the transmission over half the Fermi surface, the conductance has, however, much simpler resonant structure. As for the single-barrier magnetic structures, our calculations show that the conductance preserves the main feature of the electron tunneling.

Abstract:We study the transport properties of periodic multibarrier magnetic structures. It is found that the conductance depends strongly on the shape of the magnetic barrier. When a uniform magnetic field is applied to the multibarrier magnetic structure, it is shown that the conductance decreases, and that the resonant peaks are completely depressed progressively with the increase of the magnetic field. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:Transport of electrons in asymmetric multiple-barrier magnetic structures is inspected in detail with transfer-matrix technique. It is found that, compared with transport in symmetric double-barrier magnetic structures, both the transmission and the conductance are drastically reduced for electrons tunneling through asymmetric double-barrier magnetic cases, and the asymmetric magnetic structure possesses stronger wave-vector filtering properties. For electrons tunneling through the nanostructure consisting of more magnetic barriers, the transmission and the conductance exhibit more complicated and sharper peaks.

Abstract:Electronic transport properties in magnetic barrier structures under the influence of an electric field have been investigated. The results indicate that the characteristics of transmission resonance are determined not only by the structure and the incident wave vector but also strongly by the electric field. It is shown that the transmission coefficient at resonance in the low-energy range is suppressed by applying the electric field for electron tunneling through the magnetic barrier structure, arranged with identical magnetic barriers and wells. It is also shown that the transmission resonance is first enhanced up to optimal resonance, and then suppressed with further increased electric field for electron tunneling through the magnetic barrier structure, arranged with unidentical building blocks. Strong suppression of the current density is also found in the magnetic barrier structure, arranged with two different building blocks.

Abstract:We investigated spin-polarized transport properties for electrons tunneling through a few of magnetic-electric barrier structures. The general formula of the transmission was derived. The relationship between the spin-polarization and the distribution of the nonhomogeneous magnetic field was revealed. Furthermore, our results also indicated that the spin-filtering effect can be enhanced significantly when a semiconductor with a larger g* factor is used.

Abstract:We study electron coherent tunneling properties through the magnetic-barrier structure. The characteristics of wave-vector filtering, resonance splitting, and electric field effects have been investigated. The results indicate that the features of transmission resonance in the magnetic-barrier structure not only depend on the structure and the incident wave vector, but also strongly depend on the electric field. There exist rich and interesting features for electrons tunneling through the magnetic-barrier structure which is arranged with nonidentical magnetic barriers and wells. Abstract:In this paper, we study the electron transport properties in the double non-collinear δ-magnetic barriers within 2-dimensional electron gas. We find that the transmission of spin current depends on the relative orientation of each magnetic barrier. In addition to the well-known unpolarized configurations in an antiparallel magnetic barrier structure, we also find that there exists infinite unpolarized structures due to the time-reversal symmetry. These structures will be important in the designs of spin valve.
Transmission Resonances in Magnetic-Barrier Structures

Abstract:Quantum transport properties of electrons in simple magnetic-barrier (MB) structures and in finite MB superlattices are investigated in detail. It is shown that there exists a transition of transmission resonances, i.e., from incomplete transmission resonances in simple MB structures consisting of unidentical blocks, to complete transmission resonances in comparatively complex MB structures ($n \ge 4$, n is the number of barriers). In simple unidentical block arrangements in double- and triple-MB structures we can also obtain complete transmission by properly adjusting parameters of the building blocks according to ky-value (ky is the wave vector in y direction). Strong suppression of the transmission and of the conductance is found in MB superlattices which are periodic arrangements of two different blocks. The resonance splitting effect in finite MB superlattices is examined. It is confirmed that the rule (i.e., for n-barrier tunneling the splitting would be (n-1)-fold) obtained in periodic electric superlattices can be extended to periodically arranged MB superlattices of identical blocks through which electrons with ${k_y} \ge 0$ tunnel, and it is no longer proper for electrons with k y <0 to tunnel.

Abstract:We present a detailed comparison of electron transport through triple electric-barrier structures and triple magnetic-barrier structures. Tunneling through triple electric-barrier structures is mainly determined by the momentum along the tunneling direction, while in triple magnetic-barrier structures transport strongly depends not only on structural parameters but also the transverse momentum. It is confirmed that both the transmission coefficient and the conductance are dramatically reduced with increasing height or width of the middle barrier in triple magnetic-barrier structures.

Abstract:Based on the group velocity concept and the two-band model, we investigated tunneling properties of spin-polarized electrons traversing ferromagnetic/insulator (semiconductor) double junctions under the influence of an external electric field. The tunneling time and the transmission coefficient, as well as the spin polarization, were calculated and examined. Effects of the electric field and quantum size are also considered. The results indicate that the tunneling time strongly depends on the spin orientation of tunneling electrons. In a wide range of incident energy, spin-down electrons spend a longer time tunneling through the structure than spin-up ones, and the difference of the tunneling time Δτ between electrons with opposite spin orientation is very sensitive to the incident energy in the lower energy region. Moreover, the variation of Δτ with the increasing of the incident energy shows pronounced oscillations for certain applied bias and structural size. The results also indicate that spin polarization shows frequent wide-range oscillations and its magnitude decays slowly with the increasing of the incident energy, which reveal that the spin polarization in ferromagnetic/insulator (semiconductor) junctions possesses quite different properties from those exhibited in semiconductor electric-barrier or magnetic-barrier structures as well as semiconductor/semimagnetic semiconductor hybrid heterostructures.

Abstract:Spin polarized transport was studied by employing non-equilibrium Green function method, for a model of quantum dot (QD) embedded in a mesoscopic Aharonov–Bohm (AB) ring with magnetic field applied on QD. In comparison with the situation without magnetic field on QD, the average spin occupations separate with the increase in applied magnetic field on QD; in addition, magnetic field on QD has profound effect on the density of states for different spins in QD; on the other hand, the amplitude and phase of transmission for up spin and down spin were found to present novel effects, such as, the additional peak in the phase of transmission. To understand the spin transport in the system of QD coupled to AB ring, the effects of the two magnetic fields imposed on the QD and penetrating the AB ring should be considered.

Abstract:Using the asymptotic transfer-matrix method, we investigate the resonant tunneling of holes in double-barrier semiconductor structures in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. The transmission coefficients including ll (light to light hole), hl (light to heavy hole), hh (heavy to heavy hole), and lh (heavy to light hole) are calculated as a function of energy. As in the case of nonzero parallel wave vectors, the mixing of hole tunneling can also occur due to the in-plane magnetic field. Moreover, as has been observed by resonant magnetotunneling spectroscopy, we also find that the different resonances have quite different magnetic-field dependences.
The Transport Properties of Quasi-One-dimensional Double-Chain Systems in a Magnetic Field

Abstract:We present numerical results on transport properties in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) double-chain systems in a magnetic field obtained by the use of the transfer-matrix technique. The two chains are coupled with bonds in random positions which mimic the topological disorder in the quasi-1D polymer system. There are two scattering mechanisms: the random positions of the interchain coupling and the random flux through the loops. We find that the former is suppressed by quantum interference if the interchain coupling at every link is formed by double-bond hopping, leading to the existence of extended states in the absence of a magnetic field. These states do not exist in the case of single-bond coupling. This difference between the two cases disappears in a strong field. The formula for the transmission coefficient is obtained from the numerical results in both cases.

Abstract:The Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) approach is extended to study coherent quantum transport in ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (FM/SC/SM) double tunnel junctions. In order to guarantee current conservation it is necessary to simultaneously consider spin-polarized electron currents along one direction and spin-polarized hole currents along the opposite direction, and to determine self-consistently the chemical potential in SC. It is found that all the reflection and transmission coefficients in BTK theory as well as conductance spectra oscillate with energy, exhibiting different behavior in the metallic and tunnel limits.

Abstract:A scattering-matrix method for the calculations of electron transport through lateral quantum systems in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is developed and is used to investigate the effects of an applied magnetic field on electron transport through a quantum channel modulated by a smooth periodic potential along the direction of the current flow. At zero magnetic field, the calculated conductance displays regular dips due to the formation of minigaps (or the Bragg reflections) and the rapid oscillations due to electron transmission through the coupled quasi-zero-dimensional states in the cavity regions between the potential barriers. Both are shown to be suppressed when a magnetic field is applied to the quantum channel. This is interpreted as the formation of propagating edge states. However, other irregular dips are shown to appear in the conductance of the modulated channel in the presence of the magnetic field. These dips reflect the coupling between the electron states propagating along the opposite edges of the channel and may appear so densely in a wide quantum channel with a strong modulation that the conductance exhibits fluctuations. In the high-field regime where the magnetic length l(B) is much smaller than the channel width w, these irregular dips are seen to be also suppressed, leading to a nearly perfect recovery of the conductance quantization.

Abstract:An electron transport is studied in the system that consists of a scanning tunneling microscopy, single-molecule magnet metal. Because of quantum tunneling of magnetization in a single-molecule magnet, linear response conductance exhibits stepwise behavior with increasing longitudinal field, and each step is maximized at a certain value of field sweeping speed. The conductance at each step oscillates as a function of the additional transverse magnetic field along the hard axis. A rigorous theory is presented that combines the exchange model with the Landau-Zener model.

Abstract:Spin tunneling transport properties of two-dimensional electrons through magnetic quantum structures are investigated at zero bias and finite bias. The results indicate that spin-dependent features are not only related with the magnetic configuration, the incident electron energy and the wave-vector, but also closely related with the applied bias. At zero bias, the magnetic quantum structure composed of identical magnetic-barrier and magnetic-well does not show spin-filtering properties, while the magnetic quantum structure composed of unidentical magnetic-barrier and magnetic-well shows distinct spin-filtering properties. Moreover, the applied bias greatly changes electron spin polarization, which makes the former structure also showing interesting spin-dependent features under an applied bias.

Abstract:Based on the Floquet theory and transfer-matrix method, We investigated the influence of light-field on the spin-polarized transport properties for electrons tunneling through two kinds of magnetic-electric barrier structures (the \begin{document}$\delta$\end{document}-doped magnetic-barrier can be realized in experiments by depositing two ferromagnetic stripes on top and bottom of a semiconductor heterostructure and the light-field can be realized by placing a hemispherical silicon lens on the back surface of the semiconductor substrate). Transport properties result from the interaction of electrons with the light-field by means of photon absorption and emission. It is found that the light-field can greatly affect the transmission probabilities as well as the corresponding polarizations. The distance between the adjacent peaks and the number of the transport peaks can be controlled by adjusting the frequency and the amplitude of the light-field, respectively. It is shown that a significant spin-polarization effect can be induced by such light-field in the kind of antisymmetric magnetic barrier structure (\begin{document}$B_{1}=-B_{2}$\end{document}) and the light-field can greatly change the spin-polarization effect in the kind of symmetric magnetic barrier structure (\begin{document}$B_{1}=B_{2}$\end{document}). When the frequency of the light-field increases, the spin-polarization shifts toward the low-energy end and gradually increases. These remarkable properties of spin polarization may be beneficial for the devising tunable spin filtering devices.
