Abstract:The acceleration of electrons by the self-generated quasi-static magnetic field in the interaction of n laser pulses with a plasma is investigated. The relativistic dynamics of a single electron is followed numerically. It is found that the electron can be much more effectively accelerated by n laser pulses, each with amplitude a(0) and having a fixed frequency difference from the preceding one, than by a single pulse with amplitude na(0). The large enhancement of acceleration can be attributed to stochastic-like resonance between the electron motion at the beat-frequencies of lasers and at the cyclotron motion frequency.

Abstract:Electron acceleration, in vacuum, mediated by an intense echelon phase-modulated long Gaussian laser pulse, is investigated here. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that this pulse can accelerate an electron to much higher energies than an unmodulated pulse. The staircase-like phase structure of the laser field encourages electron trapping in the favorable wave phase, greatly increasing the effective acceleration distance. Also, the electron motion is now more in the laser propagation direction. The conditions for efficient acceleration are obtained. Since the slower electrons can also be efficiently accelerated to high energies and the accelerated electrons are more axially oriented, the average energy gain by an initially Maxwellian electron bunch can be more than 13 times that obtained without the echelon phase modulation. This is at the expense of somewhat increased spatial and thermal spread, and the accelerated bunch is also more collimated.

Abstract:Electron acceleration by transversely echelon phase-modulated (EPM) circularly polarized (CP) intense laser pulse is investigated. Solution of the relativistic electron equations of motion shows that the CP EPM light wave structure can disrupt the harmonic response of a trapped electron not only in the transverse direction but also in the direction of laser propagation. In each laser cycle, there can be a net gain in the electron's transverse momentum, which is promptly converted into the forward direction by the Lorentz force. As a result, the electron can be trapped and accelerated in the favorable phase of the laser for a rather long time. Its momentum gain then accumulates and can eventually reach high levels. It is also found that with the CP EPM laser, the net acceleration of the electron is not sensitive to its initial position and velocity relative to the phase of the laser fields, so that such a laser can also be useful for accelerating thermal electron bunches to high energies.

Abstract:Using the single electron model, the acceleration of electrons in combined circularly polarized intense laser fields and the spontaneous quasistatic fields (including axial and azimuthal magnetic fields, the axial and transverse electric fields) produced in intense laser plasma interaction is investigated analytically and numerically by fitting the proper parameters of the quasistatic fields based on the data from the experiment and numerical calculation. A new resonant condition is given. It is found that the resonance acceleration of electron depends not only on laser field, but also on the bounce frequency oscillating in the quasistatic magnetic field and electric field. The net energy gained by electron does not increase monotonously with axial electric field, but there are some optimal axial electric fields.

Abstract:Electron acceleration from the interaction of an intense short-pulse laser with low density plasma is considered. The relation between direct electron acceleration within the laser pulse and that in the wake is investigated analytically. The magnitude and location of the ponderomotive-force-caused charge separation field with respect to that of the pulse determine the relative effectiveness of the two acceleration mechanisms. It is shown that there is an optimum condition for acceleration in the wake. Electron acceleration within the pulse dominates as the pulse becomes sufficiently short, and the latter directly drives and even traps the electrons. The latter can reach ultrahigh energies and can be extracted by impinging the pulse on a solid target.

Abstract:Electron acceleration in the low-density preplasma of a thin solid target by a short intense laser pulse is investigated by particle-in-cell simulation. Electrons in the preplasma are trapped and accelerated by the laser ponderomotive force as well as the wake bubble field. When the laser pulse is stopped and reflected by the target, the trapped electrons continue to move forward inertially, passing through the target with small energy spread and emittance. Abstract:Electron acceleration by a propagating short ultra-intense laser pulse in a low-density plasma has been investigated. Electrons have the maximum energy when meeting the peak of the laser pulse. If a propagating laser pulse is abruptly stopped by a solid target, the highly energetic electrons will continue to move forward inertially and escape from the laser field. The envelope of the laser pulse is taken into account and there is an optimal position between the electron and the solid target. The electron maximum energy depends on the laser intensity and initial electron energy, and has nothing to do with the polarization of the pulse, but a linearly polarized laser pulse is more effective to accelerate electron than circularly polarized one under the same laser energy. The influence of the reflected light has been taken into account which makes our model more perfect and the results give good agreement with particle in cell simulations.

Abstract:We propose that efficient acceleration of electrons in vacuum and underdense plasmas by an intense laser pulse can be triggered in the presence of another counterpropagating or intersecting laser pulse. This mechanism works when the laser fields exceed some threshold amplitudes for stochastic motion of electrons, as found in single-electron dynamics. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm that electron heating and acceleration in the case with two counterpropagating laser pulses can be much more efficient than with one laser pulse only. Two different diagnoses show that the increased heating and acceleration are caused mainly by direct laser acceleration rather than by plasma waves. In plasma at moderate densities such as a few percent of the critical density and when the underdense plasma region is large enough, the Raman backscattered and side-scattered waves can grow to a sufficiently high level to serve as the second counterpropagating or intersecting pulse and trigger the electron stochastic motion. As a result, even with a single intense laser pulse only in plasma, electrons can be accelerated to an energy level much higher than the corresponding laser ponderomotive potential.

Abstract:By three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, we study electron acceleration by tightly focusing a few-cycle radially polarized laser onto near-critical-density plasmas. Laser ponderomotive force first pushes electrons into the target, forming a compressed electron layer and leaving behind a charge-separation field. Together with the strong longitudinal electric field of this radially polarized light, the charge-separation field accelerates the electrons backward and injects them into laser fields. The reflected light continuously accelerates these injected electrons by its longitudinal field. Simulations show that a tight quasi-monoenergetic electron bunch at 15 MeV is generated within a few micrometers.

Abstract:A high-intensity laser beam propagating through a dense plasma drives a strong current that robustly sustains a strong quasistatic azimuthal magnetic field. The laser field efficiently accelerates electrons in such a field that confines the transverse motion and deflects the electrons in the forward direction. Its advantage is a threshold rather than resonant behavior, accelerating electrons to high energies for sufficiently strong laser-driven currents. We study the electron dynamics via a test-electron model, specifically deriving the corresponding critical current density. We confirm the model's predictions by numerical simulations, indicating energy gains two orders of magnitude higher than achievable without the magnetic field.

Abstract:Electron acceleration by the ponderomotive force of a laser pulse with duration less than the plasma wavelength in inhomogeneous underdense plasmas is studied by two-dimensional relativistic parallel particle-in-cell (PIC) code. Particular attention is paid to the mechanism of electron acceleration associated with the increasing group velocity of the laser pulse. In an underdense plasma layer with linearly descending density profile, the accelerated electrons move together with the laser pulse which propagates with increasing group velocity. In an inhomogeneous pre-plasma with linearly ramping density profile, as the incident laser propagates up the density gradient with decreasing group velocity, ponderomotive acceleration is reduced compared with the uniform pre-plasma. As the reflected laser propagates down the density gradient with increasing group velocity, the ponderomotive acceleration by the reflected laser is more effective due to increasing group velocity of the reflected light and the return currents induced by the incident laser light. Relativistic electrons with multi-tens-MeV energies are generated.

Abstract:Using plasma mirror injection we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that a circularly polarized helical laser pulse can accelerate highly collimated dense bunches of electrons to several hundred MeV using currently available laser systems. The circular-polarized helical (Laguerre-Gaussian) beam has a unique field structure where the transverse fields have helix-like wave-fronts which tend to zero on-axis where, at focus, there are large on-axis longitudinal magnetic and electric fields. The acceleration of electrons by this type of laser pulse is analysed as a function of radial mode number and it is shown that the radial mode number has a profound effect on electron acceleration close to the laser <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://axis.Using" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations a circular-polarized helical laser beam with power of 0.6 PW is shown to produce several dense attosecond bunches. The bunch nearest the peak of the laser envelope has an energy of 0.47 GeV with spread as narrow as 10\%, a charge of 26 pC with duration of $\sim 400$ as, and a very low divergence of 20 mrad}. The confinement by longitudinal magnetic fields in the near-axis region allows the longitudinal electric fields to accelerate the electrons over a long period after the initial reflection. Both the longitudinal E and B fields are shown to be essential for electron acceleration in this scheme. This opens up new paths towards attosecond electron beams, or attosecond radiation, at many laser facilities around the world.

Abstract:The dynamics of electron injection in the direct laser acceleration (DLA) regime was investigated by means of three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and theoretical analysis. It is shown that when an ultra-intense laser pulse propagates into a near-critical density or relativistically transparent plasma, the longitudinal charge-separation electric field excites an ion wave. The ion wave modulates the local electric field and acts as a set of potential wells to guide the electrons, located on the edge of the plasma channel, to the central region, where the DLA takes place later on. In addition, it is pointed out that the self-generated azimuthal magnetic fields tend to suppress the injection process of electrons by deflecting them away from the laser field region. Understanding these physical processes paves the way for further optimizing the properties of direct-laser accelerated electron beams and the associated X/gamma-ray sources.

Abstract:The mechanism of electron ponderomotive acceleration due to increasing group velocity of laser pulse in inhomogeneous underdense plasma layers is studied by two-dimensional relativistic parallel particle-in-cell code. The electrons within the laser pulse move with it and can be strongly accelerated ponderomotively when the duration of laser pulse is much shorter than the duration of optimum condition for acceleration in the wake. The extra energy gain can be attributed to the change of laser group velocity. More high energy electrons are generated in the plasma layer with descending density profile than that with ascending density profile. The process and character of electron acceleration in three kinds of underdense plasma layers are presented and compared.

Abstract:Direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electron by an ultra intense and short-pulsed laser interacting with under-dense plasma is investigated based on 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. A high-density electron beam is generated by the laser longitudinal ponderomotive force. Although the total number of DLA electrons is significantly smaller than the number of electrons trapped in the bubble, the total charge of high-energy DLA electrons (E>800MeV) reaches 67 pC/μm. It is found that the electron beam occurs in a two-stage acceleration, i.e., accelerated in vacuum by the laser directly soon after a DLA process in plasma. The beam is accelerated violently with effective acceleration gradient in 100 GeV/cm. The energy spectrum of electrons presents a Maxwellian distribution with the highest energy of about 3.1 GeV. The dependence of maximum electron energy and electric quantity with laser intensity, laser width, pulse duration, and initial plasma density are also studied.

Abstract:Experiments for the laser guiding studies has been carried out with the 30-fs 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser pulse interaction with the underdense plasma produced by a long-slab (1.2 x 10 mm(2)) gas jet and an ablative laser-triggered discharged capillary. Formation of an extremely long plasma channel with a length (similar to 10 mm) 10 times above the Rayleigh length is observed when the laser pulse power is much higher than the critical power for relativistic self-focusing. The long-self-guiding-channel formation is accompanied by the electron acceleration with a low transverse emittance (< 0.87 pi mm mrad) and high electric current (similar to 10 nC/shot), as well as the generation of a quasimonoenergetic electron bunch with an energy of similar to 80 MeV. In order to continuously elongate the plasma channel, a 4-cm-scale discharged capillary was used. We successfully demonstrated laser-plasma acceleration of high-quality electron beams up to nearly semigigaelectronvolts. Our results exactly verified the prediction of laser wakefield acceleration through a centimeter-scale plasma channel in the "blowout bubble" regime, where a microscale plasma cavity produced through the ultrarelativistic laser-plasma interactions plays an essential role in the self-injection and acceleration of electrons.

Abstract:By using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, externally injected electron beam acceleration and radiation in donut-like wake fields driven by a Laguerre-Gaussian pulse are investigated. Studies show that in the acceleration process the total charge and azimuthal momenta of electrons can be stably maintained at a distance of a few hundreds of micrometers. Electrons experience low-frequency spiral rotation and high-frequency betatron oscillation, which leads to a synchrotron-like radiation. The radiation spectrum is mainly determined by the betatron motion of electrons. The far field distribution of radiation intensity shows axial symmetry due to the uniform transverse injection and spiral rotation of electrons. Our studies suggest a new way to simultaneously generate hollow electron beam and radiation source from a compact laser plasma accelerator.

Abstract:Energetic electron acceleration processes in a plasma hollow tube irradiated by an ultraintense laser pulse are investigated. It is found that the longitudinal component of the laser field is much enhanced when a linear polarized Gaussian laser pulse propagates through the plasma tube. This longitudinal field is of π/2 phase shift relative to the transverse electric field and has a π phase interval between its upper and lower parts. The electrons in the plasma tube are first pulled out by the transverse electric field and then trapped by the longitudinal electric field. The trapped electrons can further be accelerated to higher energy in the presence of the longitudinal electric field. This acceleration mechanism is clearly illustrated by both particle-in-cell simulations and single particle modelings.
