Abstract:Electron acceleration by transversely echelon phase-modulated (EPM) circularly polarized (CP) intense laser pulse is investigated. Solution of the relativistic electron equations of motion shows that the CP EPM light wave structure can disrupt the harmonic response of a trapped electron not only in the transverse direction but also in the direction of laser propagation. In each laser cycle, there can be a net gain in the electron's transverse momentum, which is promptly converted into the forward direction by the Lorentz force. As a result, the electron can be trapped and accelerated in the favorable phase of the laser for a rather long time. Its momentum gain then accumulates and can eventually reach high levels. It is also found that with the CP EPM laser, the net acceleration of the electron is not sensitive to its initial position and velocity relative to the phase of the laser fields, so that such a laser can also be useful for accelerating thermal electron bunches to high energies.

Abstract:Electron acceleration, in vacuum, mediated by an intense echelon phase-modulated long Gaussian laser pulse, is investigated here. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that this pulse can accelerate an electron to much higher energies than an unmodulated pulse. The staircase-like phase structure of the laser field encourages electron trapping in the favorable wave phase, greatly increasing the effective acceleration distance. Also, the electron motion is now more in the laser propagation direction. The conditions for efficient acceleration are obtained. Since the slower electrons can also be efficiently accelerated to high energies and the accelerated electrons are more axially oriented, the average energy gain by an initially Maxwellian electron bunch can be more than 13 times that obtained without the echelon phase modulation. This is at the expense of somewhat increased spatial and thermal spread, and the accelerated bunch is also more collimated.

Abstract:The acceleration of electrons by the self-generated quasi-static magnetic field in the interaction of n laser pulses with a plasma is investigated. The relativistic dynamics of a single electron is followed numerically. It is found that the electron can be much more effectively accelerated by n laser pulses, each with amplitude a(0) and having a fixed frequency difference from the preceding one, than by a single pulse with amplitude na(0). The large enhancement of acceleration can be attributed to stochastic-like resonance between the electron motion at the beat-frequencies of lasers and at the cyclotron motion frequency.

Abstract:Multistaged acceleration of solid-density thin foils by ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulse is investigated. A stable radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) stage is first established. Higher dimensional effects such as transverse instabilities and enhanced electron heating then gradually make the initially opaque foil transparent to the laser light. Accordingly, the dominant acceleration mechanism changes smoothly from RPA to target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). The transition can therefore enhance the maximum energy of the accelerated ions but broaden their energy spectrum. For a double-layer target, however, the light ions (protons) in the backlayer can be efficiently accelerated in the RPA and TNSA regimes nearly monoenergetically. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that with this scheme a circularly polarized laser pulse of peak intensity 3.9 x 1022 W/cm(2) can produce a collimated proton bunch that persists for many Rayleigh lengths and its peak energy can reach 4.2 GeV with FWHM of 200 MeV. Abstract:Electron acceleration by a propagating short ultra-intense laser pulse in a low-density plasma has been investigated. Electrons have the maximum energy when meeting the peak of the laser pulse. If a propagating laser pulse is abruptly stopped by a solid target, the highly energetic electrons will continue to move forward inertially and escape from the laser field. The envelope of the laser pulse is taken into account and there is an optimal position between the electron and the solid target. The electron maximum energy depends on the laser intensity and initial electron energy, and has nothing to do with the polarization of the pulse, but a linearly polarized laser pulse is more effective to accelerate electron than circularly polarized one under the same laser energy. The influence of the reflected light has been taken into account which makes our model more perfect and the results give good agreement with particle in cell simulations.

Abstract:Electron acceleration from the interaction of an intense short-pulse laser with low density plasma is considered. The relation between direct electron acceleration within the laser pulse and that in the wake is investigated analytically. The magnitude and location of the ponderomotive-force-caused charge separation field with respect to that of the pulse determine the relative effectiveness of the two acceleration mechanisms. It is shown that there is an optimum condition for acceleration in the wake. Electron acceleration within the pulse dominates as the pulse becomes sufficiently short, and the latter directly drives and even traps the electrons. The latter can reach ultrahigh energies and can be extracted by impinging the pulse on a solid target.

Abstract:Electrons accelerated by a propagating laser pulse of linear or circular polarization in vacuum have been investigated by one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical modeling. A stopping target is used to stop the laser pulse and extract the energetic electrons from the laser field. The effect of the reflected light is taken into account. The maximum electron energy depends on the laser intensity and initial electron energy. There is an optimal acceleration length for electrons to gain maximum energy where electrons meet the peak of the laser pulse. The optimal acceleration length depends strongly on the laser pulse duration and amplitude. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The motion of injected electrons in the electromagnetic field associated with a intense laser pulse propagating in a hollow plasma channel is analyzed. Results show that the electrons are possible to get effective longitudinal acceleration and can be extracted from the pulse automotively.

Abstract:Electron acceleration by the ponderomotive force of a laser pulse with duration less than the plasma wavelength in inhomogeneous underdense plasmas is studied by two-dimensional relativistic parallel particle-in-cell (PIC) code. Particular attention is paid to the mechanism of electron acceleration associated with the increasing group velocity of the laser pulse. In an underdense plasma layer with linearly descending density profile, the accelerated electrons move together with the laser pulse which propagates with increasing group velocity. In an inhomogeneous pre-plasma with linearly ramping density profile, as the incident laser propagates up the density gradient with decreasing group velocity, ponderomotive acceleration is reduced compared with the uniform pre-plasma. As the reflected laser propagates down the density gradient with increasing group velocity, the ponderomotive acceleration by the reflected laser is more effective due to increasing group velocity of the reflected light and the return currents induced by the incident laser light. Relativistic electrons with multi-tens-MeV energies are generated.

Abstract:Using plasma mirror injection we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that a circularly polarized helical laser pulse can accelerate highly collimated dense bunches of electrons to several hundred MeV using currently available laser systems. The circular-polarized helical (Laguerre-Gaussian) beam has a unique field structure where the transverse fields have helix-like wave-fronts which tend to zero on-axis where, at focus, there are large on-axis longitudinal magnetic and electric fields. The acceleration of electrons by this type of laser pulse is analysed as a function of radial mode number and it is shown that the radial mode number has a profound effect on electron acceleration close to the laser <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://axis.Using" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations a circular-polarized helical laser beam with power of 0.6 PW is shown to produce several dense attosecond bunches. The bunch nearest the peak of the laser envelope has an energy of 0.47 GeV with spread as narrow as 10\%, a charge of 26 pC with duration of $\sim 400$ as, and a very low divergence of 20 mrad}. The confinement by longitudinal magnetic fields in the near-axis region allows the longitudinal electric fields to accelerate the electrons over a long period after the initial reflection. Both the longitudinal E and B fields are shown to be essential for electron acceleration in this scheme. This opens up new paths towards attosecond electron beams, or attosecond radiation, at many laser facilities around the world.

Abstract:Exact closed-form solutions to Maxwell's equations are used to investigate the acceleration of electrons in vacuum driven by ultrashort and nonparaxial radially polarized laser pulses. We show that the threshold power above which significant acceleration takes place is greatly reduced by using a tighter focus. Moreover, electrons accelerated by tightly focused single-cycle laser pulses may reach around 80% of the theoretical energy gain limit, about twice the value previously reported with few-cycle paraxial pulses. Our results demonstrate that the direct acceleration of electrons in vacuum is well within reach of current laser technology.

Abstract:Acceleration of an initially moving electron by a copropagation ultra-short ultra-intense laser pulse in vacuum is studied. It is shown that when appropriate laser pulse parameters and focusing conditions are imposed, the acceleration of electron by ascending front of laser pulse can be much stronger compared to the deceleration by descending part. Consequently, the electron can obtain significantly high net energy gain. We also report the results of the new scheme that enables a second-step acceleration of electron using laser pulses of peak intensity in the range of 10(19)-10(20) W mu m(2)/cm(2). In the first step the electron acceleration from rest is limited to energies of a few MeV, while in the second step the electron acceleration can be considerably enhanced to about 100 MeV energy.

Abstract:We propose that efficient acceleration of electrons in vacuum and underdense plasmas by an intense laser pulse can be triggered in the presence of another counterpropagating or intersecting laser pulse. This mechanism works when the laser fields exceed some threshold amplitudes for stochastic motion of electrons, as found in single-electron dynamics. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm that electron heating and acceleration in the case with two counterpropagating laser pulses can be much more efficient than with one laser pulse only. Two different diagnoses show that the increased heating and acceleration are caused mainly by direct laser acceleration rather than by plasma waves. In plasma at moderate densities such as a few percent of the critical density and when the underdense plasma region is large enough, the Raman backscattered and side-scattered waves can grow to a sufficiently high level to serve as the second counterpropagating or intersecting pulse and trigger the electron stochastic motion. As a result, even with a single intense laser pulse only in plasma, electrons can be accelerated to an energy level much higher than the corresponding laser ponderomotive potential.

Abstract:By three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, we study electron acceleration by tightly focusing a few-cycle radially polarized laser onto near-critical-density plasmas. Laser ponderomotive force first pushes electrons into the target, forming a compressed electron layer and leaving behind a charge-separation field. Together with the strong longitudinal electric field of this radially polarized light, the charge-separation field accelerates the electrons backward and injects them into laser fields. The reflected light continuously accelerates these injected electrons by its longitudinal field. Simulations show that a tight quasi-monoenergetic electron bunch at 15 MeV is generated within a few micrometers.

Abstract:Electron acceleration in the low-density preplasma of a thin solid target by a short intense laser pulse is investigated by particle-in-cell simulation. Electrons in the preplasma are trapped and accelerated by the laser ponderomotive force as well as the wake bubble field. When the laser pulse is stopped and reflected by the target, the trapped electrons continue to move forward inertially, passing through the target with small energy spread and emittance. Abstract:Resonant acceleration of plasma electrons in combined circularly polarized Gaussian laser fields and self-generated quasistatic fields has been investigated theoretically and numerically. The latter includes the radial quasistatic electric field, the azimuthal quasistatic magnetic field and the axial one. The resonant condition is theoretically given and numerically testified. The results show some of the resonant electrons are accelerated to velocities larger than the laser group velocity and thus gain high energy. For peak laser intensity I-0 = 1 x 10(20) W cm(-2) and plasma density n(0) = 0.1n(cr), the relativistic electron beam with energies increased from 207 MeV to 262 MeV with a relative energy width around 24% and extreme low beam divergence less than V has been obtained. The effect of laser intensity and plasma density on the final energy gain of resonant electrons is also investigated.

Abstract:An enhanced resonant acceleration scheme for electrons by intense circularly polarized laser pulse in a plasma with slowly attenuating density is proposed. As it propagates, the phase velocity and Doppler-shifted frequency of the laser both gradually decrease, so that the electrons moving in the combined laser and spontaneous fields can retain betatron resonance for a rather long time and effectively acquire energy from the laser. The theoretical analysis is verified by test-particle numerical calculations. It is shown that well-collimated GeV electron beams with very low beam divergence can be produced.

Abstract:The motion of a charged particle in the fields associated with a circularly polarized laser pulse propagating in a plasma is analytically studied. In contrast to an electron, a positron can be accelerated by the leading edge of the pulse to very high energy, even if it is initially at rest, and ultrahigh intensity of the pulse is not necessary. The pulse threshold intensity a(th)(2) is always less than an upperlimit a(max)(2) = 6 in the long pulse (L much greater than lambda(p)) case. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Within the framework of plane-wave angular spectrum analysis of the electromagnetic field structure, a solution valid for tightly focused radially polarized few-cycle laser pulses propagating in vacuum is presented. The resulting field distribution is significantly different from that based on the paraxial approximation for pulses with either small or large beam diameters. We compare the electron accelerations obtained with the two solutions and find that the energy gain obtained with our new solution is usually much larger than that with the paraxial approximation solution.
