Abstract:The dynamic impedance of saturated soil layer with a radially inhomogeneous boundary zone to horizontally vibrating pile is theoretically investigated. A continuous, radial variation for the soil properties is assumed, so that there are no wave reflections from the fictitious interface. For the purpose of analysis, the inhomogeneous boundary zone is subdivided into a series of concentric annular sub-zones with constant material properties. The impedances of soil are obtained by adopting transfer matrix method. To verify the solution obtained herein, the computed results are compared with those obtained from earlier solution. Then, a parameter study is performed to investigate the effect of parameters involved. It is found that variations in shear modulus and the width of boundary zone have significant influence on the soil impedances.

Abstract:Using the extended Heinrich equations for computing the per-unit-length resistance and inductance of coplanar waveguides (CPWs), we have studied the wide-band impedance characteristics of various finite-ground uniform and stepped CPWs. Finite-ground CPWs are frequently used in the design of CPW-based microwave and millimeter-wave devices. For various physical parameters, in particular the metallization thickness and its conductivity, we examined both resistance and inductance over a wide frequency range. Our work can serve as a basis for further study of the energy dissipation of the devices in the excitation of a high-power pulse.

Abstract:The effect of finite-size and boundary conditions on the I-V characteristics of a resistively shunted, two-dimensional Josephson-junction array in zero magnetic field is studied both analytically and numerically. Through a detailed analysis of activation, driven diffusion, and destruction of free vortices under periodic boundary conditions, we obtain a two-scale finite-size scaling expression which, in particular, resolves a previously reported discrepancy between the analytical treatment of Ambegaokar [Ambegaokar, Halperin, Nelson, and Siggia, Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 783 (1978)] and numerical simulations. The effect of finite array width on the I-V curves in the experimentally studied open networks is governed by a different, one-scale scaling expression with a different underlying physical mechanism. For arrays of sufficiently large width, data from the two types of boundary conditions provide lower and upper bounds on the asymptotic value of the voltage. Large-scale simulations (up to 2304x512 nodes) are carried out to verify the phenomenological analysis.

Abstract:Some mathematical models are proposed to accurately describe the frequency-dependent series conductance and susceptance of the discontinuities in various finite-ground capacitive series-connected coplanar waveguides (FGCPWs). These models can predict the wideband self-resonance characteristics in the air gap regions. Also, it is pointed out that the Heinrich's equation is applicable to compute the per-unit-length parameters of the uniform FGCPWs, though it was rarely used in the past 10 years. It is shown that Heinrich's equation can be used to capture the frequency-dependent distributed resistance and inductance in a real chip environment. Using our proposed models with Heinrich's equation, numerical calculations are performed to show the effects of metallization surface conductivity and thickness of both capacitive and inductive series-connected FGCPW geometries on their frequency-dependent series resistances, series inductances and shunt capacitances. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Longitudinal wave propagation in a multi-step rod with variable cross-section

Abstract:Vibration signals collected after propagation are usually different from the real ones of some vibration source due to the corresponding stop band of a particular propagation media. Here, the propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave are investigated when the signals pass through a multi-step rod with variable cross-section. Firstly, the transfer matrices for a single rod are derived based on the three wave theories, i.e. the elementary wave theory, the Love wave theory and the Mindlin-Herrmann wave theory, respectively. Next, the matching conditions for any two adjacent segments are analyzed, from which the transfer matrix for any step-rod with two or more segments are presented. Moreover, possible elastic constraint is also taken into consideration. Finally, several numerical examples for a step-rod with three segments are given by the present theoretical predictions and the finite element analysis, from which the performance of the three wave theories are compared with each other. The results show that the influences of the Poisson's effect and shear deformation cannot be neglected, and the propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave in this multi-step rod may also be affected by the magnitude and location of the elastic constraint as well as the discontinuity of the cross-sections of adjacent segments.

Abstract:As a stationary solution of the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck equation, the Haissinski equation predicts the equilibrium line density of a bunch that circulates in a storage ring for a given wake function. This paper shows that some equations regarding the centroid shift of the bunch, the peak position of the bunch profile, bunch length, and the impedance from the bunch profile can be derived from the Haissinski equation in a self-consistent manner. Specifically, a generalized quadratic equation for potential-well bunch lengthening is derived to accommodate any arbitrary impedance model (that is, the impedance spectrum under consideration can take any form). This expands upon Zotter's cubic equation, which is primarily applicable to inductive impedance. The equations derived in this paper are tested using computed impedance models for some electron storage rings, showing machine-dependent properties of impedance effects. We conclude that these equations can be employed in electron storage rings to effectively bridge the gap between impedance computations and beam-based measurements.

Potential-well bunch lengthening in electron storage rings

Abstract:The cubic equation derived by B. Zotter has been popularly used for electron storage rings to describe the scaling law of potential-well bunch lengthening. This equation has also often been used to calculate the effective impedance when the bunch lengthening is measured or simulated. This paper discusses the validity of Zotter's equation and presents an alternative but self-consistent equation for potential-well bunch lengthening. Its applications to predicting bunch lengthening and extracting effective impedance from bunch length measurements are also addressed.

Abstract:A new self-consistent semi-analytical method for calculating the stationary beam-induced voltage in the presence of arbitrary filling patterns and impedance sources in storage rings is presented. The theory was developed in space-domain with resonator wake-functions and in frequency-domain with arbitrary impedance functions. The SIRIUS storage ring parameters were used to benchmark the results, demonstrating good agreement between the two approaches and with macroparticle tracking simulations. Additionally, a different approach to simulate the beam-loading compensation of active rf cavities was investigated in frequency-domain, proving to be a more generic description than the methods generally used. The impact of broadband impedance on the longitudinal equilibrium was straightforwardly evaluated with the frequency-domain framework, without intermediate steps such as fitting broadband resonators or convolving short-range wakes with bunch distributions. Finally, a simple study of Touschek lifetime improvement with a passive higher harmonic cavity is presented.

Abstract:For the machines powered by SiC inverters, the high voltage variation rate (dv/dt) leads to uneven voltage distribution in windings, and affects the insulation service life. To predict the influence of SiC inverter steep voltage waveform on the voltage distribution, a high frequency transmission line model is studied in this paper. The capacitance and impedance parameters at different frequencies, which are used in the studied model, are simulated with finite element method considering the laminated structure of silicon steel sheets. Further more, the frequency domain characteristics of the winding impedance are derived with vector fitting method. Based on the studied model, using the simulated and derived parameters, time domain simulation is carried out to predict the voltage distribution in each turn of the coil, and compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:The influence of tower on the impedance of short overhead lines was analyzed using Sommerfeld's dipole field theory, which takes the influence of the current in the towers into account. The result shows that the impedance of the vertical tower is about 10% of the whole impedance at low frequencies. A self adaptive truncation technology is presented to transform the generalized Sommerfeld integral which has an infinite upper limit into a definite integral. The approach improves the precision and calculating speed of Sommerfeld integral.

Abstract:Novel analytical model for bonding wire has been proposed in this paper. Bonding wires on stacked dies with different connection paths have been modeled and simulated at high frequency. Return loss demonstrated that the transfer connection path showed better transmission performance. Furthermore, the relationship between materials with different dielectric constant and return loss were investigated. Results can help form a good guide for the package design.

Abstract:In this paper, a semi-analytical method is proposed to accurately and efficiently calculate the impedance of grid-type power distribution network (PDN) on interposer. An equivalent plane PDN is constructed to obtain the same impedance curve as that of grid-type PDN. Furthermore, a modified resonant cavity mode is applied for the equivalent plane PDN to eliminate the deviation between the equivalent plane PDN and grid-type PDN, and to obtain the consistent impedance curves as that of 3-D full-wave simulation for the grid-type PDN. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are verified by the 3-D full-wave simulation method and an available measurement result. Finally, different sizes of grid-type PDN are investigated to verify the scalability of the proposed semi-analytical method.

Abstract:The upgrade project of the Hefei Light Source storage ring is under way. In this paper, the broadband impedances of resistive wall and coated ceramic vacuum chamber are calculated using the analytic formula, and the wake fields and impedances of other designed vacuum chambers are simulated by CST code, and then a broadband impedance model is obtained. Using the theoretical formula, longitudinal and transverse single bunch instabilities are discussed. With the carefully-designed vacuum chamber, we find that the thresholds of the beam instabilities are higher than the beam current goal.

Abstract:To detect whether the high-speed railway is occupied and ensure the safety of the train, the track circuit system is widely used in the high-speed railway control system.Track impedance is the important primary side parameter of the track circuit system.In this paper, based on the combining method of finite element and circuit, the finite element synthesis method was proposed to calculate the ballastless track impedance.The calculation model of rail impedance of the ballastless track was established to study the influence of some parameters, such as frequency, soil conductivity, buried depth of the reinforcement bars and the spacing of reinforcement bars.The influence of these parameters on track resistance and inductance was presented and analyzed, which can be used to guide the designing of the ballastless track railway.

Abstract:The bunch-lengthening phenomenon results from one of the most severe single-bunch instabilities in electron storage rings. There are many theories explaining the bunch-lengthening and the associated longitudinal microwave instability. But none of them are totally satisfactory. In this paper, based on one bunch-lengthening theory, a new bunch-lengthening formula is established, where the wiggler's effect is taken into account. The effectiveness of this formula is checked on the CESR ring and then applied to the International Linear Collider damping ring.

Abstract:Originating from the stochastic nature of the photon emission process, the diffusion of the electron longitudinal coordinate exists even if the global phase slippage of a storage ring is zero, as we cannot zero all the local phase slippages simultaneously. This quantum diffusion is viewed as the most fundamental limit of the lowest bunch length realizable in an electron storage ring from the single-particle dynamics perspective. Here, we present an analysis of this effect using the Courant-Snyder parametrization in the longitudinal dimension. Analytical formulas for the longitudinal emittance, energy spread, and bunch length are derived. The same formalism is used to discuss the application of multiple radio frequency systems for longitudinal strong focusing. The presented work is expected to be useful in the development of novel light source mechanisms like steady-state microbunching, where a short bunch length or small longitudinal emittance is needed.

Abstract:It is shown that the most important electrical design criteria for long (i.e., stability limited) high voltage overhead transmission lines operating at a given voltage are all related to the spatial electric field distribution between phase conductors. Hence, when designing a long transmission line, a change in one design parameter necessarily causes changes in the others. It is shown how an understanding of these relationships can lead to insight into the design and to the tradeoffs that must be made in designing these transmission lines. More specifically, a more spatially uniform electric field implies an increased power capacity for long transmission lines but also reduces the critical flashover voltage and increases the capacitance per unit length.

Abstract:Impedance of vacuum components in the ring is very important in the analysis of beam instability. This paper describes the construction of a broadband impedance measurement system. This system applies the coaxial line methods of M. Sands and J. Rees. The system is made up of HP8720B vector network analyser and a PC computer. A new RF connector is designed to get the inner conductor straining and RF impedance matching. A pillbox cavity is measured by this system. The result agreed well with the MAFIA calculation

Abstract:In this paper, the electric-field distribution around the composite insulators and the heads of transmission towers is calculated by a model coupling the indirect boundary-element method to the moment method. The heterogeneous media, such as the composite insulators and the filament metal structures such as the transmission towers and the transmission lines, are considered altogether. The method can take into account not only the permittivity but also the resistivity of the media by using the complex resistivity in the frequency domain. The electric-field distribution around a three-phase 330-kV transmission tower with composite insulators was analyzed. The electric fields on the surfaces of the grading rings and the phase subconductors and at the ends of the composite insulators are analyzed. Both the method and the results are useful for the design of high-voltage transmission lines.
