Abstract:A heterogeneous polymerization model, including an initial solution polymerization model and a later two-phase polymerization model, is developed to describe graft free-radical copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of poly(propylene glycol). The diffusion-controlled termination, initiation, propagation, and transfer in the dispersed phase are considered reasonably. The model describes the polymeriztion kinetics well. The main polymerization locus shifts from the continuous phase into the dispersed phase at monomer conversion of approximate to 0.030.05, leading to sharp increase in polymerization rate and molecular weight, decrease in graft efficiency and broadening of the MWD.

Abstract:The branching copolymerization of styrene with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (tri-EGDMA) as the branching agent was carried out using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in anisole at 90 °C. The resulting copolymers were analyzed using 1H NMR and triple detection size exclusion chromatography (TD-SEC). The NMR analysis shows that the pendent vinyl groups react even in the early stages of the polymerization. Analysis of the changes in the molecular weight and polydispersity of the copolymers suggests that the reaction system contains three components: the primary chains, the slightly branched chains comprising of two primary chains, and the highly branched chains consisting of more than three primary chains. The coupling reaction mainly takes place between the primary chains, resulting in the slightly branched chains in the early stages of the reaction, the weight fraction of the branched chains and the degree of branching increase gradually with monomer conversion, highly branched chains mainl...

Abstract:The radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate was carried out via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated by ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate and catalyzed by CuBr/2;2'-bipyridine complex. This polymerization proceeds in a living fashion with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity. The obtained copolymer was esterified with 2-bromoisobutylryl bromide yielding a macroinitiator, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate), and its structure was characterized by H-1-NMR. This macroinitiator was used for ATRP of styrene to synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate)-graft-polystyrene. The molecular weight of graft copolymer increased with the monomer conversion, and the polydispersity remained relatively low. The individual grafted polystyrene chains were cleaved from the macroinitiator backbone by hydrolysis and the hydrolyzed product was characterized by H-1-NMR and GPC.

Abstract:The particle growth in the graft free-radical copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of poly(propylene glycol) is investigated by experiments and modeling. The concentrations of chain transfer agent and macromer, and the St/AN ratio play important roles in particle size and its distribution. A particle size model is developed and an analytic expression for the particle size in terms of monomer mass concentration (W-mt0), initiator molar concentration ([I](0)), and macromer mass concentration (W-M0) is derived. The particle size is described experimentally as: W-mt0(0.58) W-M0(-0.65) {I}(0)(-0.06). Particle growth processes under various experimental conditions are well described by the model.

Abstract:A new graft copolymers poly(aryl ether sulfone)-graft-polystyrene (PSF-g-PS) and poly(aryl ether sulfone)-graft-[polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)] (PSF-g-(PS-b-PMMA)) were successfully prepared via atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) catalyzed by FeCl2/isophthalic acid in N,N-dimethyl formamide. The products were characterized by GPC, DSC, IR, TGA and NMR. The characterization data indicated that the graft copolymerization was accomplished via conventional ATRP mechanism. The effect of chloride content of the macroinitiator on the graft copolymerization was investigated. Only one glass transition temperature (T-g) was detected by DSC for the graft copolymer PSF-g-PS and two glass transition temperatures were observed in the DSC curve of PSF-g-(PS-b-PMMA). The presence of PSF in PSF-b-PS or PSF-g-(PS-b-PMMA) was found to improve thermal stabilities. (C) 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Ionic liquid was employed as a reaction medium to prepare starch-based macro-initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), due to its high dissolubility for starch and chemical inertness. Starch macro-initiators with varying degrees of substitution (DS) were successfully synthesized in ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIM]Cl) by homogeneous esterification with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide at room temperature without the use of any additional catalysts. Starch-based copolymers (Starch-g-PS and Starch-g-PMMA) were prepared at the molecular level via homogeneous ATRP using CuBr/PMDETA and CuBr/BPY as catalysts. Compared with heterogeneous surface-initiated polymerization, the graft density and graft ratio were significantly improved. The structure and thermo behaviour of the graft copolymers were characterized by H-1 NMR, FTIR and TGA. The molecular weights of the grafted polymer chains were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) after hydrolyzing of the starch backbone from the copolymer. The effects of molar ratio of monomer to initiator, solvent, ligand and temperature on the graft polymerization were investigated as well.

Abstract:Controlled dispersion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide in the presence of aminated fluoropolymers. These materials played the dual role of macroligand for the copper bromide and also steric stabilizer to support formation of polymer microspheres. The livingness of the PMMA beads was confirmed by the one-pot two-step PMMA chain extension and the synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PFMA) diblock copolymer in scCO(2). Successful activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) for ATRP of MMA, using tin ethylhexanoate as a reducing agent, is also discussed, and the concept of dispersion ATRP of MMA was successfully extended to the controlled dispersion polymerization of styrene by ATRP leading to the formation of PS microparticles. Finally, due to the high solubility of the catalyst in scCO(2), the purification of PMMA was investigated by supercritical fluid extraction, leading to the preparation of PMMA beads with low residual catalyst traces.

Abstract:The transformations of living cationic polymerization to ATRP to form the block and graft copolymers of β-pinene with styrene were performed. Poly(β-pinene) carrying benzyl chloride terminal [poly(β-p)StCl] was prepared by capping the living poly(β-pinene), which was obtained with 1-phenylethyl chloride/TiCl4/Ti(OiPr)4/nBu4NCl initiating system, with a few units of styrene. Poly(β-p)StCl, in conjunction with CuCl and bpy, could initiate the ATRP of styrene and gave well-defined block copolymer of β-pinene and styrene. In contrast, tert-alkyl-chlorine-capped poly(β-pinene) [poly(β-p)Cl] obtained by living cationic polymerization of β-pinene per se without capping of styrene gave a mixture of desired block copolymers and unreacted poly(β-p)Cl due to the low initiating reactivity of poly(β-p)Cl. Brominated poly(β-pinene) synthesized by the quantitative bromination of poly(β-pinene) using NBS was also used to initiate the ATRP of styrene in the presence of CuBr and bpy to prepare the graft copolymer of β-pinene and styrene. The first-order kinetic characteristic and linear increment of molecule weight with the increasing of monomer conversion indicated the living nature of this ATRP grafting.

Abstract:A novel dualfunctional monomer, 2-(2′,2′,6′,6′-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1′-oxy)methylbenzene-1,4-dioyl chloride hydrochloride, with two acid chloride groups for step-growth polymerization and a nitroxide group for the mediation of living radical polymerization was synthesized. It was first copolymerized with terephthaloyl chloride and p-phenylenediamine at a feed molar ratio of 1:3:4 in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone containing 10 wt% calcium chloride at −10°C to yield a poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) based macroinitiator, which initiated radical polymerization of styrene at 125°C to obtain a series of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)-g-polystyrenes. A combinatory analysis of proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elementary analysis, thermogravimetry and gel permeation chromatography indicated that the macroinitiator induced the radical polymerization of styrene to proceed in a well-controlled way. The molecular weight of side-chains increased with an increase of monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution index remained lower than 1.5. The graft copolymers showed a remarkably improved solubility in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and much depressed crystallinity in bulk.
Synthesis and characterization of PSt-b-PDMS-b-PSt triblock copolymers

Abstract:The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene from poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) macroinitiators was described. Commercially available difunctional PDMS containing vinylsilyl terminal species was reacted with hydrogen bromide resulting in the PDMS macroinitiators containing alkyl bromide end-groups. The ATRP of styrene was then conducted at 130°C using the PDMS containing alkyl bromide end-groups as initiators, cuprous chloride (CuCl) as catalyst and 4,4′-di(5-nonyl)-2,2′-bipydine (dNbpy) as ligand to produce block copolymers. Using this technique, copolymers consisting of a PDMS center block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. Analysis of the copolymers by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) showed that the molecular weight increased linearly with the conversion of monomer, and the polydispersity decreased with the progress of polymerization. The molecular weight increased from 6400 to 17890 and the polydispersity ranged from 1.38-1.26, demonstrating that the reaction was controlled and the polystyrene blocks had low polydispersities typical of radical polymerization by an atom transfer process. IR and 1H-NMR analyses of the PDMS macroinitiators and the copolymers showed that the PDMS macroinitiators containing alkyl bromide end-groups were formed, and the copolymers consisted of polystyrene and PDMS. A DSC analysis confirmed the results. T g in 100°C and -120°C were attributed to polystyrene blocks and PDMS blocks respectively, indicating the copolymer consisted of polystyrene and PDMS, the triblock copolymers polystyrene-b-polysiloxane-b-polystyrene (PSt-b-PDMS-b-PSt) were formed. All these results also demonstrated the effectiveness of ATRP to synthesize a variety of inorganic/organic polymer hybrids.

Abstract:Polystyrene-b-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-polystyrene (Pst-b-PDMS-b-PSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The latter procedure was carried out at 130°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4, 4-di (5-nonyl)-2,2-bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. By using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PDMS center block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. The polymerization was controllable; ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in Mn with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H-NMR. The effects of molecular weight of macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are reported.

Abstract:A combination of nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization was used to synthesize a series of well-defined graft (co)polymers with "V-shaped" and "Y-shaped" branches. The polymer main chain is a copolymer of styrene and p-chloromethylstyrene (PS-co-PCMS) prepared via nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization. The V-shaped branches were prepared through coupling reaction of polystyrene macromonomer, carrying 1,1-diphenylethylene terminus, with polystyryllithium or polyisoprenyllithium. The Y-shaped branches were prepared through further polymerization initiated by the V-shaped anions. The obtained branches, carrying a living anion at the middle (V-shaped) or at the end of the third segment (Y-shaped), were coupled in situ with pendent benzyl chloride of PS-coPCMS to form the target graft (co)polymers. The purified graft (co)polymers were analyzed by size exclusion chromatography equipped with a multiangle light scattering detector and a viscometer. The result shows that the viscosities and radii of gyration of the branched polymers are remarkably smaller than those of linear polystyrene. In addition, V-shaped product adopts a more compact conformation in dilute solution than the Y-shaped analogy. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:4-PEG grafted styrene and maleic anhydride alternating copolymers were synthesized via traditional radical polymerization and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) mediated radical polymerization.The alternating structure was confirmed by 13C NMR analyses.Moreover,functional PEG grafted copolymers were synthesized by hydrolysis or aminolysis of anhydride groups.With dodecylamine as model amine,the aminolysis of maleic anhydride group was studied and the resulted copolymers show amphiphilic properties.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(L-lactic acid)-poly(methyl methacrylate) tri-block copolymer was prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and properties of the copolymer were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR), thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic plot for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate using poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) as the initiator shows that the reaction time increases linearly with ln[M]0/[M]. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve grafted chains with well-defined molecular weights, and block copolymers with narrowed molecular weight distributions. The thermal stability of PLLA is improved by copolymerization. A new wash-extraction method for removing copper from the ATRP has also exhibits satisfactory results. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Graft copolymers with pendant macrocycles were synthesized via “graft onto” method. First, cyclic polystyrene (PS) was achieved by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and Cu-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAc), and then an alkynyl group was introduced to cyclic PS. Meanwhile, poly(3-azide-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PGMA-N3) was synthesized by ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and successive ring-opening of pendant epoxide ring with NaN3. The graft copolymer was achieved by the following click reaction between PGMA-N3 and alkynyl-containing cyclic PS. GPC and 1H NMR were utilized to characterize the obtained graft copolymers, and a maximal grafting density of 20% was observed. Thermal behaviors of linear PS, cyclic PS and PGMA grafted with cyclic PS (PGMA-g-cPS) were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and Tg of PGMA-g-cPS is higher than those of linear and cyclic PS.

Abstract:Mixed-arm star polymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) sequential polymerization using the "core first" method. The synthesis consisted of three steps: (i) synthesis of a hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) core, (ii) ATRP with the first monomer (St, styrene), and (iii) then the polymerization with the second monomer (tert-butyl acrylate, tBA) from the core by the RAFT technique. After the hydrolysis of poly(tBA), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) arms were obtained. In the whole process, the final products and intermediates were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR), and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in detail. The arm number and arm length of polystyrene (PS) and poly(tBA) (PAA) in the star polymers were derived from GPC and MALDI-TOF MS after the cleavage of their ester bond linked to the HPG core: It was found that the initiation efficiency for ATRP of the first St was very high (nearly to 100%) but only when the arm number of PS was less than 66 and the molecular weight (MW) of PS was lower than 1.800 Da, then high initiation efficiency for RAFT of the second tBA could reach to 93%.

Abstract:Poly(acrylic acid)-g-poly(alkyl methacrylate) amphiphilic graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and grafting-from main-chain technique. The well-defined products were characterized by FIF-IR, H-1 NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The molecular weight of a main chain could be tuned by the variation of the feed ratios, while the tuning of the molecular weights of side chains could be conducted by controlling the reaction time. This is a significant progress for the synthesis of amphiphilic graft copolymers because the side chains can be extended to other polymer blocks. Moreover, the study of self-assembly behavior can benefit formation of the well-defined structures of the products.

Abstract:Summary Polystyrene- block -polycarbonate- block -polystyrene was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene using polycarbonate having two 2-bromoisobutyryloxy end groups as the macroinitiator, which was prepared by condensation polymerization of bisphenol A with triphosgene in the presence of chain-stopper, 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)phenyl)propane. While polycarbonate- graft -polystyrene was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene using polycarbonate having 2-bromoisobutyryloxy side groups as the macroinitiator, which was prepared by condensation of bisphenol and l,l-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)- 1 -(4-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)phenyl)ethane with triphosgene. The molecular weights of polystyrene block or graft chains increased linearly with monomer conversion, and their polydispersities were low throughout the blocking or grafting polymerization process.

Abstract:A substituted E-caprolactone, alpha-bromo-epsilon-caprolactone, was synthesized from alpha-bromocyclohexanone by Baeyer-Villiger reaction using 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. The ring-opening copolymerization of this monomer with epsilon-caprolactone was carried out with aluminum isopropoxide as the initiator, giving poly (epsilon-caprolactone-co-alpha-bromo-epsilon-caprolactone) copolymer. This copolymer was used as the macroinitiator for the controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene for the synthesis of poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-g-polystyrene graft copolymers. The results showed that all the initiating sites along the macroinitiator chain initiated ATRP of styrene, and that the molecular weights of the graft copolymers increased with styrene conversion and agreed well with the theoretical values. Abstract:The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique using the copper halide/N,N',N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine complex was applied to the graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate on the uniform polystyrene (PS) seed particles and formed novel core-shell particles. The core was submicron crosslinked PS particles that were prepared via emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The crosslinked PS particles obtained were transferred into the organic phase (tetrahydrofuran), and surface modification using the chloromethylation method was performed. Then, the modified seed PS particles were used to initiate ATRP to prepare a controlled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(methyl acrylate) PMA) shell. The final core-shell particles were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elementary analysis. The grafting polymerization was conducted successfully on the surface of modified crosslinked PS particles, and the shell thickness and weight ratio (PMMA and PMA) of the particles were calculated.
