Abstract:The Nb–23Ti–15Al (at%) alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) and hot-pressing (HPing). The microstructure evolution of powder particles during MA and its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot-pressed (HPed) alloy have been investigated. The powder and HPed alloy were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate that particle size increases in the first stage and then decreases in the second stage during MA; as milling speed increases, mechanically alloyed (MAed) powder with convoluted elemental lamellae, homogeneous Nb solid-solution and an amorphous phase could be obtained respectively in 24h. Higher homogeneity in microstructure and composition of the MAed powder particles promotes the precipitation of the δ phase and refines the β and Ti(O,C) phases in the HPed alloy. Moreover, due to the phase equilibrium changes caused by Fe and Cr in the amorphous powder, σ phase appears in the alloy as a stable phase instead of the δ phase. Properly MAed powder contributes to higher hardness of the HPed alloy, for reasons of microstructure refinement and sufficient precipitating of strengthening phases.

Abstract:The studies of mechanical alloying on the Fe–Cu system, as a model system for those with positive heats of mixing, are reviewed. Several problems involved in the mechanical alloying process are discussed. For example, (1) whether alloying occurs on an atomic level; (2) what the solid solubility in the Fe–Cu system is; (3) where the positive energy is stored in the alloys; (4) what the decomposition process of the supersaturated alloys is; and (5) what type of magnetic properties the new materials have. The elucidation of these problems will shed light on the understanding of the mechanisms for the preparation of materials under highly non-equilibrium conditions in systems with positive heats of mixing by mechanical alloying.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials as a new class of engineering materials with enhanced properties and structural length scale between 1 and 100 nm can be produced by a variety of different methods. Mechanical alloying (MA) technique is one of the processes to produce nanomaterials. This process involving milling of constituent powder in high-energy ball mills goes extensive mechanical deformation due to ball-powder-ball and ball-powder-container collisions that occur during MA. The development of strong oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys has been the prime goal of Benjamin's group, which invented the MA technique. But, the possibility of synthesizing a variety of materials has made MA an exciting field to work in for many investigators. Mechanically alloyed nickel-based, iron-based superalloys, and aluminum-based alloys are in commercial production. The ODS Al-base alloys made by MA are found to be much superior to the traditional alloys in term of strength and hardness value even at high temperature. The mechanical alloying process attracts the attention of a large group of researchers and technologists basically because of its potential to produce a variety of materials in the simplest possible way. MA definitely has a bright future as a solid-state processing route.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying of a powder mixture of elemental Al and graphite has been performed in a high-energy ball mill. The structural evolution has been characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The carbide Al4C3 is first formed as an intermediate product. Further milling leads to destabilization of Al4C3. It is proposed that destabilization of Al4C3 is induced by the accumulated defects and the high pressure due to collision of the balls. Balling milling of the elemental AlC powder mixture finally results in a f.c.c. solid solution with a carbon content up to 23 at%. Whereas an amorphous phase is formed in the composition range of 28–50 at% C.

Abstract:Immiscible metallic systems provide new opportunities for tailoring material properties due to their unique microstructure. However, they are immiscible in the liquid state, or separate into incompatible liquid phase during the cooling process, making it difficult to obtain their alloys or phases. Mechanical alloying is a solid‐state processing route, whose basic principle is to utilize mechanical impact to make materials suffer cyclic deforming, fracturing, and welding. It reduces the energy barrier and provides pathways of atom diffusion, achieving atomic‐level alloying in solid‐state. Notably, mechanical alloying does not undergo the cooling process from liquid to solid phase, which can avoid the solute separation. This article discusses the mechanical alloying process, microstructure, and mechanism of immiscible metallic systems. It focuses on the alloying principles, including solid solutions, intermetallic compounds, nanocrystalline or amorphous alloys. In addition, the effects of process parameters, including rotation speed, milling time, and ball‐to‐powder weight ratio, on microstructure and phase constitution are comprehensively reviewed. Some useful suggestions regarding the preparation of immiscible metallic systems are also put forward for future works.

Abstract:The mixture powders with compositions(Al 0.9 W 0.1 ) 1-x Y x(x =0,0.05,0.1) and (Al 0.8 W 0.2 ) 1-x Y x(x= 0,0.1) have been investigated by mechanical Alloying during different milling time. The structures of asmilled powders have been analyzed by Xray diffraction. The results indicate that the procedure of alloying is mainly forming tungsten solid solubilities. As to the formation of solid-solution in tungsten of aluminium and yttrium; the addition of yttrium is in favor of solution of aluminium;yttrium can promote the alloying progress.
Effects of milling process parameters and PCAs on the synthesis of Al0.8Co0.5Cr1.5CuFeNi high entropy alloy powder by mechanical alloying

Abstract:Nine schemes were designed to study the effects of milling parameters (rotational speed, balltopowderweightratio, milling time) and process control agents (PCAs) on the synthesis of Al0.8Co0.5Cr1.5CuFeNi powders by mechanical alloying (MA). By using X-ray diffraction (XRD), the solid solutions formation during MA were studied, the grain size and lattice strain were calculated. The morphology, microstructure and composition of the powders were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The grain size decreased as rotational speed, milling time, balltopowderweightratio increased, the change of lattice strain was opposite. The carbon and oxygen pollution levels introduced by stearic acid were higher than those introduced by n-heptane and lower than those introduced by ethanol. The powders were hardly alloyed when stearic acid was added at initial stage, but could be effectively alloyed after pre-alloying. Cold-welding was effectively inhibited and particles were greatly refined when 1 wt% ethanol and stearic acid were added respectively. Solid solutions formation was affected by cold-welding and fracture. Severe cold-welding led to Fe, Cr, Ni rich regions formation. Refinement of particles and enrichment regions resulted in the increase of concentration gradient sites, accelerating dissolution and alloying.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying is a solid-state powder processing technique that involves repeated cold welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. Originally developed about 50 years ago to produce oxide-dispersion-strengthened Ni- and Fe-based superalloys for aerospace and high temperature applications, it is now recognized as an important technique to synthesize metastable and advanced materials with a high potential for widespread applications. The metastable materials produced include supersaturated solid solutions, intermediate phases, quasicrystalline phases, amorphous alloys, and high-entropy alloys. Additionally, nanocrystalline phases have been produced in virtually every alloy system. Because of the fineness of the powders, their consolidation to full density without any porosity being present is a challenging problem. Several novel methods have been developed to overcome this issue. Powder contamination during milling and subsequent consolidation constitutes another issue; this can be resolved, though expensive. A number of applications have been developed for these novel materials. This review article presents an overview of the process of mechanical alloying, mechanism of grain refinement to nanometer levels, and preparation of materials such as nanocomposites and metallic glasses. The application of mechanical alloying to synthesize some advanced materials such as pure metals and alloys, hydrogen storage materials, and energy materials is described. The article concludes with an outlook on future prospects of this technique.

Abstract:Oxide dispersion strengthened tungsten heavy alloys have been used in a wide variety of industrial and military applications due to their high density, strength and stiffness. These alloys have been produced by mechanical alloying, which can provide uniform distribution of nano-oxide particles and an extremely fine grain structure, resulting in the reduction of the sintering temperature. However, the high-energy ball-milling process could introduce iron contamination from the vial and milling media during the procedure. In this study, the W-Ni-Y2O3 alloy was investigated as a function of milling time. The results show that the increase of the Fe/Ni ratio has a significant influence on the microstructural development and material properties. The XRD data reveal considerable solid solubility extension in these powders. The tungsten carbide and iron rich intermetallic compounds were formed after long milling times, which can change the relative density and hardness of the alloy. It is essential that we understand the role of intermetallic phases in the ODS tungsten heavy alloy which determine the material properties and the control of microstructural development.

Abstract:Recent research on the structure and properties of intermetallic compounds processed by ball milling—i.e. mechanical attrition—is reviewed. Mechanical attrition includes synthesis of intermetallics from the elemental powders of their constituents (mechanical alloying) and from milling the compound powder (mechanical milling) to provide changes in structure and/or microstructure. Mechanical attrition has been used to synthesize intermetallic compound compositions for a variety of reasons: for example (1) materials difficult to produce by conventional solidification because of phase equilibria constraints; (2) introduction of unique microstructures to enhance certain properties, and (3) formation of metastable structures at intermetallic compositions. The properties of intermetallics modified by the structures/microstructures induced by mechanical attrition include mechanical behavior, hard magnetic behavior, hydrogen storage, and catalysis. In addition the extensive plastic deformation observed by TEM in milled nominally brittle intermetallics may offer a means of studying deformation behavior in very brittle intermetallics at essentially ambient temperature.

Abstract:The technique of mechanical alloying, although originally developed to produce oxide-dispersion-strengthened superalloys for aerospace and high-temperature applications, is now recognized as an important and versatile technique to synthesize metastable and advanced materials with a high potential for widespread applications. Mechanical alloying involves repeated cold welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. The reduced diffusion distances between metal powder layers formed as a result of heavy deformation, introduction of a high density of crystal defects, and a slight rise in powder temperature contribute to alloy formation from blended elemental powders. The type of phases/materials produced by mechanical alloying of powder mixtures include supersaturated solid solutions, intermetallics, quasicrystalline alloys, high-entropy alloys, amorphous alloys, and composites. If the material produced is crystalline in nature, most often the grain size is in the nanometer size. Amongst these phases, nanostructured materials and nanocomposites have been the most important types investigated. In this contribution, we will present an overview of the processing, characteristics, and properties of nanocrystalline materials and nanocomposites produced by mechanical alloying, with special emphasis on our recent work.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of global technological levels and the increasing demand for high-performance alloy materials in national economic construction, the traditional single principal component alloy is increasingly unable to meet people’s increasing service needs. High-entropy alloys play an important role in aerospace, mechanical manufacturing, biomedicine, energy development and other engineering fields because of their unique physical, chemical and mechanical properties. Based on the concept of high-entropy alloys, the high-entropy effect, lattice distortion effect, sluggish diffusion effect and cocktail effect of high-entropy alloys are represented in this paper. The common preparation methods of high-entropy alloys are summarized according to the classification of melting-casting method, mechanical alloying method and coating method. The strength and toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, fatigue resistance, radiation resistance and magnetic properties of the high-entropy alloys are discussed. The application prospect of high-entropy alloys is summarized, and the future research and development direction of high-entropy alloys are prospected on this basis.

Abstract:The continual development and implementation of machine learning (ML) technology in the alloy research has proved its great potential in the past few years, making it a prominent topic in the materials science community. Following an overview of the basic principles and the commonly used workflow of ML, we summarized the various applications of ML in alloy research. ML can assist alloy design by discovering and optimizing alloy materials, predicting phase and crystal structure, and thereby reducing experimental costs and time for new alloy development. By training on large datasets of experimental results, ML has been used to predict the mechanical properties , hydrogen storage performance, and glass-forming ability. Also, ML shows great potential in the quantitative microstructure analysis and the optimization of alloy process. Finally, the challenges and future directions of ML in alloy research have been discussed. By offering insights into the applications of ML in alloys research, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of this field and inspire further exploration of its potential.

Abstract:In this paper, Cu-Zr alloy powders and materials with different Zr contents were prepared by horizontal stirring high-energy ball milling combined with vacuum hot-pressing sintering. The results show that the mechanical alloying time of Cu-5%Zr, Cu-10%Zr and Cu-15%Zr alloy powder prepared by high energy ball mill is 7 h, 14 h and 22 h, respectively. At the beginning of high-energy ball milling, Zr particles adhere to the Cu matrix and agglomerate phenomenon occurs. With the progress of ball milling, the powder particles become smaller, the Zr particles gradually distribute evenly and widely on the surface of the Cu matrix, and are dissolved in the Cu matrix, and finally alloying is achieved. Cu-Zr alloys with different Zr content are prepared by vacuum hot pressing sintering. When Zr content is 10%, the maximum hardness of Cu-Zr alloy is 277.24HV, which is 462% higher than that of pure copper.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying is traditionally being used for developing novel alloys, which are difficult to prepare by conventional manufacturing routes, through solid state diffusion. It offers unique feature of extended solid solubility resulting in the formation of non-equilibrium immiscible phases that have huge potential in aerospace and defense applications. However, the development of intermetallic class of materials has always been a challenge. Titanium Aluminide, possessing various advantageous properties, has got limited practical usage owing to the difficulty in development. The current research focuses on developing Titanium Aluminide intermetallic material (TiAl) from elemental Aluminumand Titanium powders using high energy planetary ball milling process. The centrifugal force combined with high gravitational counterforce resulted in the formation of intermetallic phase with near stoichiometric ratio. The developed TiAl was subjected to various microstructural and morphological analysis to understand the mechanism of phase formation during the milling process. Results reveal new dimensions for developing intermetallic alloys for various advanced engineering applications.

Abstract:The process of mechanical alloying and the phase transformations that accompany ball-milling Cu and Zn powder mixtures have been investigated by Cu-63 NMR spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. Ball-milling the Cu Zn powder mixtures influences all of the Cu-63 NMR spectral parameters. Compared with the results of X-ray diffraction, the Cu-63 NMR analysis is more sensitive to the subtle microstructural changes of the Cu-Zn powder mixtures during mechanical alloying. Based on the elemental principles of NMR in metals, some valuable conclusions related to the alloying reaction at the microscopic level have been drawn. The present work has proved the applicability of NMR analysis to investigate solid-state reactions induced by mechanical alloying.
