Abstract:Immiscible metallic systems provide new opportunities for tailoring material properties due to their unique microstructure. However, they are immiscible in the liquid state, or separate into incompatible liquid phase during the cooling process, making it difficult to obtain their alloys or phases. Mechanical alloying is a solid‐state processing route, whose basic principle is to utilize mechanical impact to make materials suffer cyclic deforming, fracturing, and welding. It reduces the energy barrier and provides pathways of atom diffusion, achieving atomic‐level alloying in solid‐state. Notably, mechanical alloying does not undergo the cooling process from liquid to solid phase, which can avoid the solute separation. This article discusses the mechanical alloying process, microstructure, and mechanism of immiscible metallic systems. It focuses on the alloying principles, including solid solutions, intermetallic compounds, nanocrystalline or amorphous alloys. In addition, the effects of process parameters, including rotation speed, milling time, and ball‐to‐powder weight ratio, on microstructure and phase constitution are comprehensively reviewed. Some useful suggestions regarding the preparation of immiscible metallic systems are also put forward for future works.

Abstract:Amorphization of the Nb–20Ti–15Si–5Cr–3Hf–3Al (at %) alloy is realized by mechanical alloying (MA). The amorphous phase formation and microstructural evolution are investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). During ball milling, the phase constituent of the alloy powder exhibits a transition from most supersaturated Nb-based solid solutions (Nbss) and a small amount of amorphous phases (after 20 h of ball milling) to a completely amorphous state (after milling for 40 h), which is accompanied by evolution of the powder morphology from flakes to aggregates and eventually to refined granules. The thermal stability of the milled amorphous powders is studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). With the increase of heating temperature, the distortion energy stored during ball milling is released, followed by a transformation from amorphous phase to Nbss and γ-Nb5Si3 phases. In addition, the Vickers microhardness remarkably increases, as a result of the amorphous phase formation in the matrix.

Abstract:Some new modeling principles and conclusions about MA in several kinds of high-energy ball mills are reviewed in this paper.MA models can be divided into four categories :kinematics model,collision model,energy transferring model and milling map,temperature effect model.Those models can predict MA outcomes within an order of magnitude;help identify critical process and material variables;and reduce the amount of test work needed for process optimization.

Abstract:The studies of mechanical alloying on the Fe–Cu system, as a model system for those with positive heats of mixing, are reviewed. Several problems involved in the mechanical alloying process are discussed. For example, (1) whether alloying occurs on an atomic level; (2) what the solid solubility in the Fe–Cu system is; (3) where the positive energy is stored in the alloys; (4) what the decomposition process of the supersaturated alloys is; and (5) what type of magnetic properties the new materials have. The elucidation of these problems will shed light on the understanding of the mechanisms for the preparation of materials under highly non-equilibrium conditions in systems with positive heats of mixing by mechanical alloying.

Abstract:Mg60Zn30Ti5Si5amorphous alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying(MA)with different processing parameters.The phases,microstructures,and thermal properties of the mechanically alloyed powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscope,and differential scanning calorimeter,respectively.The results indicate that the compounds firstly formed and then transformed to amorphous phase during the MA.The optimized MA parameters include 17.5∶1(ball-to-powder ratio),6h(MA time),and 425r/min(rotational speed).The ball-to-powder ratio is a key factor to form amorphous structure.The heat released at high temperatures for Mg60Zn30Ti5Si5 is directly related to the content of amorphous phase.

Abstract:The characteristic of amorphous phase synthesized by mechanical alloying(MA) was reviewed.Basing on the amorphous transformation theory in MA,the formation mechanism of amorphous phase on the condition of ΔH_(mix)0 and ΔH_(mix)≈0 was analyzed.The results show that the mixing enthalpy is not main factor to form amorphous phase during MA.And when |ΔH_(mix)|≈0,the phase transformation kinetics is provided by mechanical work.According to the kinetics theory of amorphous phase formation during MA,which was developed by Desre and Yavari,the critical amorphous phase thickness of Al-2.25wt%Pb alloy is about 4nm.

Abstract:The 6061 aluminum alloy powder had been synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) using Al, Mg, Si and Cu element powders. During mechanical alloying, these particles underwent three stages. First, they increase in size with high speed, then, decrease in size with high speed, and at last, decrease in size with low speed. Corresponding to these three stages, the particle morphology changed from a more clear equiaxed particle with a little lamella to a large unclear plate particle laminated, and finally, to a finer clear equiaxed particle with a little lamella. At the different stages of mechanical alloying, cooled welding and fracture played different dominating role respectively.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying of Fe-Co based powder,via high-energy ball milling under the protection of high purity Ar atmosphere,has been studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and differential thermal analyzer(DTA).It is found that the Fe44Co44Zr3.5Nb3.5B4Cu1 mixed powder can be changed to amorphous phase powder by atomic diffusion during the mechanical alloying process.The amorphous phase powder's forming mechanism relates with the comprehensive applications of a variety of factors including the crystal size,defect,stress and high local packing density during ball milling,which accords with another mechanical alloying mechanism,namely the diffusion mechanism.At the same time,the verification results based on the thermodynamics and kinetics criterion also show that the Fe44Co44Zr3.5Nb3.5B4Cu1 mixed powder has changed to amorphous alloy phase.

Abstract:Recent research at Harbin Institute of Technology on the synthesis of nanocrystalline and untrafine grained materials by mechanical alloying is reviewed. Examples of the materials include aluminum alloy, copper alloy, Ti/Al composite, magnesium-based hydrogen storage material, and Nd2Fe14B/alpha-Fe magnetic nanocomposite. Details of the processes of mechanical alloying and consolidation of the mechanically alloyed nanocrystalline powder materials are presented. The microstructure characteristics and properties of the synthesized materials are addressed.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying(MA) was an effective process to synthesize nanostructure materials and has been applied extensively.The action on powder during ball-milling can be enhanced when the mechanical energy of balls was combined with other physical energy,and the efficiency of MA can be increased evidently.In this article,the development of MA has been briefly described and several high-energy ball-milling techniques assisted by external physical fields were discussed in detail.The improvement of MA was due to the combination action or the reactivity activation on powder by physical energy fields assisted ball-milling.

Abstract:91.16W6.56M2.281Fe tungsten heavy alloy from the elemental powders of W, Ni and Fe was mechanically alloyed(MA). Phase was defined by XRD. Microstructure was observed by TEM (JEM-2000 type). Phase evaluation, grain size and lattice distortion of these powders were determined and discussed. And nano-crystalline supersaturated solid solutions and amorphous were prepared by MA. A thermodynamic model was developed based on Miedema semi-experimental theory to calculate the driving force for phase evolution. The thermodynamic analysis showed that there is no chemical driving force to form amorphous alloys. The model of multilayer amorphization during MA was applied to illustrate the feasibility of amorphization of powder with neither DeltaH(mix) much less than 0 nor D-B much greater than D-A.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying is a solid-state powder processing technique that involves repeated cold welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. Originally developed about 50 years ago to produce oxide-dispersion-strengthened Ni- and Fe-based superalloys for aerospace and high temperature applications, it is now recognized as an important technique to synthesize metastable and advanced materials with a high potential for widespread applications. The metastable materials produced include supersaturated solid solutions, intermediate phases, quasicrystalline phases, amorphous alloys, and high-entropy alloys. Additionally, nanocrystalline phases have been produced in virtually every alloy system. Because of the fineness of the powders, their consolidation to full density without any porosity being present is a challenging problem. Several novel methods have been developed to overcome this issue. Powder contamination during milling and subsequent consolidation constitutes another issue; this can be resolved, though expensive. A number of applications have been developed for these novel materials. This review article presents an overview of the process of mechanical alloying, mechanism of grain refinement to nanometer levels, and preparation of materials such as nanocomposites and metallic glasses. The application of mechanical alloying to synthesize some advanced materials such as pure metals and alloys, hydrogen storage materials, and energy materials is described. The article concludes with an outlook on future prospects of this technique.

Abstract:The powders of Al-2.25Pb(at%,hereinafter same)were performed by mechanical alloying.Phase transformation,crystalline grain size and lattice constant of Al-Pb milled powders were determined and analyzed.The results showed that the nano-crystalline supersaturated solid solution of Al-Pb milled powders was synthesized by MA.A thermodynamic model was developed based on Miedema semi-experimental theory to calculate the driving force for phase evolution.The results showed that there was the possibility to form supersaturated solid solution and amorphous for the alloy with 86.8%～98.4% Pb in MA process by chemical driving force.The free energy of solid solution was lower than that of amorphous of Al-2.25Pb alloy,but the both free energy values were positive.
