Abstract:Detuning characteristics of the AM mode-locked fiber laser are studied both in analytic theory and numeric simulation. The analytic expression of the locking range is given and is additionally verified by the numeric study. Both the two theories reveal that the pulse width remains as a constant and the pulse position varies linearly versus the detuning, when the detuning is small enough. The laser characteristics both inside and outside the locking range are examined in detail.

Abstract:We investigate the operational principle of mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides. The size of mode-locked lasers operating at tens of GHz repetition frequencies can be drastically reduced owing to the significantly decreased group velocity of light. The dynamics of such devices are analyzed numerically based on a coupled-oscillator model with the gain, loss, spontaneous emission, nearest-neighbor coupling and amplitude phase coupling (as described by the linewidth enhancement factor alpha) taken into account. It is demonstrated that active mode-locking can be achieved for moderate alpha parameter values. Simulations also indicate that large alpha parameters may destabilize the mode-locking behavior and result in irregular pulsations, which nevertheless can be effectively suppressed by incorporating detuning of individual cavity resonant frequencies in the device design.

Abstract:Passive mode locking with a fundamental repetition rate at ∼18.46 GHz is demonstrated in a two-section InGaSb/AlGaAsSb quantum well laser emitting at 2 μm. Modal gain characteristics of the laser are investigated by performing the Hakki-Paoli method to gain better insight into the impact of the absorber bias voltage (Va) on the light output. The lasing action moves to longer wavelengths markedly with increasing negative Va. The light output contains more longitudinal modes in the mode locking regime if the gain bandwidth is larger at a certain Va. Our findings provide guidelines for output characteristics of the mode-locked laser.

Abstract:The dynamic processes of the mode-locked laser based on a nonlinear auxiliary cavity containing a nonlinear frequency-doubling crystal have been studied systematically in this paper. The formulae for the output pulse width of this mode-locked laser in a dynamic equilibrium state are given, and our experimental results are shown to be in agreement with the theoretical calculations. Finally, we have also reported the dependence of laser output characteristics on some parameters.

Abstract:Using a simple signal processing approach and taking into account the finite linewidth of each longitudinal mode in a mode-locked laser, we investigate the measurement accuracy of the mode-locked laser and analyze the mode-locked pulse train coherence characteristic. Results show that the measurement accuracy in the interference between two mode-locked pulses with the same repetition rate depends on mode-locking stability rather than pulse duration. Mode-locking stability can be achieved by reducing the longitudinal mode linewidth. The mode-locked pulse amplitude is modulated by a modulation envelope function, rather than illimitably continuous pulses because of the finite linewidth of the longitudinal modes. A mode-locked laser emits numerous pulse modulation envelopes one by one and each pulse modulation envelope is described by the same function. Powerful ways are proposed to decrease the linewidth and improve mode-locking stability and measurement accuracy.

Abstract:The time-domain ABCD matrix formalism is based on the propagation of a Gaussian pulse which is characterized by the pulsewidth and chirp. In this paper, we will perfect this method and derive time-domain ABCD matrices for more optical devices. Especially, we extend this perfected theory to analyze the principle of passive mode-locking by reasonable approximation though, as we know, the output pulse generated from passive mode-locking fiber laser is of sech-shape. It is attractive because it can present a fairly apparent view to understand the mechanism of fiber lasers as well as analytic results to understand the pulse characteristics.

Abstract:The Fourier transform method has been used to analyze the influence of modal amplitude and phase fluctuations in a mode-locked laser on performance of its output pulse.The results show that the pulse shape and the bandwidth remain essentially constant when the modes have amplitude and phase fluctuations,but appear superimposed on a fluctuations background.The phase variations will cause the fluctuation of peak.The physical picture in this paper is concise and is helpful to get stable mode-locked laser output in experiments.

Abstract:We propose a mathematical model for the phase-locking of a mode-locked laser. Based on the standard phase-locked loop (PLL) theory, a detailed mathematical model is developed. By applying the model to a system of phase-locking of a mode-locked laser, we analyze its three basic characteristics: the final steady error, the transient response, and the stability. An experimental phase-locking system is built with the standard PLL to measure the actual locking performance. The agreement between the experimental results and simulations has proved that our theoretical model for phase-locking of a mode-locked laser is correct.

Abstract:The q-parameter and the ABCD law are useful tools for analyzing the propagation or oscillation behavior of the spatial Gaussian laser beam. In this letter, we apply these tools to the theory of the actively mode-locked Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber laser (AML-EDFL). Based on the q-parameter definition, we derive the ABCD matrices for the four primary elements which influence the pulse forming in the AML-EDFL, including the amplitude modulator, the optical filter, the fiber with dispersion, and the fiber with nonlinearity. With the aid of the split-step q-parameter processing algorithm, the laser characteristics versus some typical laser parameters are investigated in detail.

Abstract:Basic characteristics of wavelength locked Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) are analyzed and results are presented by the simulation of a theoretical model of the FP-LD. We use fourth-order Runge-Kutta to solve the rate equation of injection locked FP-LD which has been studied by many researchers. But most of the research are either focused only on wavelength detuning or on the modes of injected beam. Hence we analyze the effect of wavelength detuning, modes of injected beam, injected power on the FP-LD. With these analysis we can conclude the required wavelength detuning, mode for injection, required injected beam power and others depending upon applications. We model FP-LD theoretically and analyze output spectrum without injection locking which contains photon number of each mode and carrier density along with gain spectrum. We added the injected beam term to the rate equation in one or more modes to obtain the spectrum of wavelength locked FP-LD. Injection locked phenomena is observed with sufficient on/off contrast ratio. Various parameters such as wavelength detuning, injected beam power, bias current, and injected modes are changed to analyze output power and spectrum. Analysis on hysteresis width is also done by changing the wavelength detuning, and injected mode number to see the effect on hysteresis width which is important to find proper wavelength detuning, injected power and mode of injected beam required for the different application such as switching, memory and others. The analysis will help to find effective parameters to meet the demand of power effective optical devices for future optical networking system.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of mode-locking in a laser with high-order transverse mode is important for achieving an ultrashort pulses train under more complicated conditions. So far, mode-locking with high-order transverse mode has not been reported in other lasers except the multimode fiber laser. This paper demonstrates robust mode-locking with high-order transverse mode in a Kerr-lens mode-locked vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. While the longitudinal modes are locked, continuous mode-locking accompanied by high-order transverse mode up to TEM40 is observed. The threshold of the mode-locking is only a little bigger than that of the lasing. After the laser oscillation is built up, the mode-locked pulse train can be obtained almost immediately and maintained until the thermal rollover of the laser. Output powers of 717 mW under fundamental mode and 666 mW under high-order transverse mode are achieved with a 4.3 ps pulse duration and 1.1 GHz pulses repetition rate, and some phenomenological explanations to the related characteristics of the mode-locked operation of high-order transverse mode in the vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser are proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, we numerically study the influence of saturable absorber parameters, namely, modulation depth, recovery time, and saturation energy, on the performance of an ultrafast fiber laser that is mode-locked by a hybrid scheme of a saturation absorber (SA) and a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Maps of mode-locked states related to intracavity wave-plates are created to evaluate the operation of hybrid mode-locking under different modulation depths of the SA. Along with the improvement of modulation depth of the SA, the mode-locked pulse results from a combination effect of the SA and NPR. The numerical analysis reveals that the SA parameters can significantly impact the pulse profile, peak power, and operation state. Moreover, they can also impact the selection of NPR mode-locked points, resulting in variation in stable single pulse output. A higher modulation depth can suppress the unstable multiple pulses’ operation and convert them into harmonic mode-locked pulses. The obtained results indicate that the selection of appropriate SA parameters can effectively improve the output characteristics of hybrid mode-locked fiber lasers.

Now based on the theory of three-level perturbation, the phenomenon is analyzed with the self-consistent equations and the mutual gain saturation effect of Single Pair of Modes of the frequency splitting standing-wave He-Ne lasers.

Abstract:We present a novel laser mode locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra-short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous-wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group-velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse shape. The set of frequencies on which the laser oscillates, and therefore the pulse repetition rate, is controlled by the geometry of resonator-internal optical elements, not by the cavity length. Finally, the bandwidth of the laser can be controlled by switching gain modules on and off. This scheme offers a route to mode-locked lasers with high average output power, repetition rates that can be scaled into the THz range, and a bandwidth that can be dynamically controlled. The approach is particularly suited for implementation using semiconductor diode laser arrays.

Abstract:The critical behavior of passive mode locking has been demonstrated in a figure-eight fiber laser that performs rational harmonic mode locking (RHML). On both the repetition rate and the pulse amplitude distribution, the observed pulse trains near the threshold exhibit the same regulations as the rational harmonic mode-locked ones. The theory also shows that there should be a middle status of RHML before achieving normal mode locking. It is important to note that the results provide what we believe to be the first confirmed attempt to address a fundamental question: how does a laser become mode locking with an increase of pump power?

Abstract:Passive mode-locking based on saturable absorbers (SAs) is an effective way to generate ultrafast pulses, while the spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) based on SAs are rarely studied. We construct an all-fiber laser with InP quantum dots (QDs) SA, and realize multi-mode Q-switching (MMQS) and STML. In addition, by adjusting the polarization controller (PC) in the laser cavity, we obtain two different single-pulse STML states. The narrowest pulse widths of the two states are 57 ps and 32 ps, respectively, and the pulse width can be tuned continuously with increasing the pump power. By decoupling the effects of the PC and the SA in our experiment, we find that the polarization plays a key role in the selection of transverse modes. The effect of independent polarization on spatiotemporal mode-locked pulses has not been investigated before. To further analyze and understand the experimental results, we numerically solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and compare the numerical simulation with the experimental results. In addition to passively adjusting cavity loss, the InP QD SA can balance the large walk off between different transverse modes, due to the spatial and spectral filtering effects. Our work has important implications for the design and application of all-fiber STML lasers.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of external optical feedback effects on the output characteristics of the two orthogonally polarized modes in a frequency locking dual frequency laser. Accompanied by the change of the external cavity length, the length of the resonance cavity is changed very slowly to set the oscillating modes sweeping across the laser gain curve. Comprehensive results are obtained and a strong mode competition is observed. Particularly, when the laser runs in the middle region of the gain curve, which mode can oscillate is determined by the movement direction of the external feedback mirror. Based on the phenomenon, a displacement sensor with directional discrimination is proposed and its capability is also discussed.
