Abstract:We present a novel type slot-multi-layer (SML) patch antenna in which the air-substrate topological structure is used to preserve the relatively thinner profile characteristic (/spl les/0.14/spl lambda/) and also to keep the broad width ( /spl ges/30%). The total operating bandwidth (VSWR<2) of this type of antenna can easily cover from 2.1 GHz to 4.4 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-gain tapered slot antenna is proposed by adopting a spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) director and a horn-shaped dielectric lens. Firstly, a horn-shaped dielectric lens is designed and connected to the tapered slot antenna. Then, an increment of 0.1–0.9 dBi in the gain of the antenna is obtained in a wide band because of the capacity of the dielectric lens to guide energy in the endfire direction. Moreover, due to the unique property of the confinement of electromagnetic energy in SSPPs structure, a director constituted with the T-shaped SSPPs structure is designed and further integrated into the tapered slot and dielectric lens. Due to the lower equivalent height of the T-shaped SSPPs, the electric field can be more concentrated at the center of the unit rather than at the ends of the branches, resulting in improved antenna directivity. Additionally, compared to traditional antennas equipped solely with SSPPs directors, our proposed antenna, which incorporates both SSPPs directors and horn-shaped dielectric lenses, exhibits a smaller volume increase ratio and a greater gain enhancement ratio. For verification, the finally designed tapered slot antenna operating at 6–18 GHz is fabricated and measured. Experimental results confirm that the designed tapered slot antenna exhibits excellent radiation performance across all frequency bands, achieving a maximum gain as high as 12.3 dBi as well as a maximum gain improvement of 61%, in which radiation patterns show good directivity and endfire radiation performance.

Abstract:Two printed wide-slot antennas with square patches within an arc-shape slot are proposed in this letter. They are fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) and a microstrip line with almost the same performances. Their impedance bandwidths for $ S_11leq -10~ dB$ are enhanced largely to more than 158%. The radiation patterns are given at 2, 6, and 10 GHz.

Abstract:In this study, a printed stepped open-slot antenna with unidirectional radiation characteristics is presented. Using a stepped feeding slot and a parasitic metal strip, the impedance matching is improved and a wide bandwidth is achieved. Additionally, by modifying the ground plane with a pair of L-shaped slots, the radiation directivity of the proposed antenna is significantly enhanced and good unidirectional radiation characteristics are obtained. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the design, a prototype antenna is fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that the antenna provides a fractional bandwidth of 101%, ranging from 3.65 to 11.1 GHz with a compact size (30 mm × 30 mm). A moderate gain, which is better than 4 dBi, is also obtained. In addition, a stable radiation directivity, which is fixed in the endfire direction (y-axis direction) is achieved. The measured front-to-back ratio is larger than 9.5 dB within the effective bandwidth.

Abstract:The miniaturization and decoupling of wideband stacked patch antennas is first presented in this communication. The miniaturization is achieved by loading spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) structures on non-radiation edges of the stacked patches. Meanwhile, the wideband operation is realized by controlling the difference in propagation constants of the stacked patches. Due to the large propagation constant of the SSPP structures, the size of the antenna is reduced to 0.18 × 0.18 λ 0 2 , which achieves 72% footprint-reduction as compared with the conventional patch antennas on the same substrates. Moreover, both the simulation and measurement show that the proposed miniaturized antenna exhibits a wide bandwidth of more than 16%. To explore its applications in compact multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems, a miniaturized wideband decoupling scheme is further proposed by introducing a coupling null at the lower resonant frequency using an SSPP-loaded defected ground structure (DGS). Experimental results show that high isolation larger than 20 dB is achieved over the wide bandwidth with a center-to-center spacing of 0.28 λ 0 .

Abstract:A novel slot antenna of large bandwidth and small size, which is fed by a fan-shaped microstrip feed with a straight stub, is introduced. The effect of the fan feed on the impedance characteristics is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results is obtained. Its measured VSWR <= 2 bandwidth reaches approximately 114%, covering 1.55-5.66 GHz. Abstract:This paper presents a laminated broadband microstrip antenna with semi-U slots. Our objective is to increase the bandwidth of microstrip antennas, reduce their size, and encourage the application of wideband miniaturization. A semi-U slot was cut in both the radiation patch and the parasitic patch in accordance with the theory of symmetry. This antenna has high gain and good directivity. Its impedance bandwidth reaches as high as 20.8% and the planar size is 50% smaller than a conventional antenna. Therefore it is significantly miniaturized. Owing to its compact structure and small mutual coupling effect, the antenna is suitable for use in antenna arrays. A 4-element sub-array was simulated and then assembled. The results of our simulations and physical testing are presented and are in good agreement.

Abstract:This letter presents a stacked patch antenna for circularly polarized (CP) filtering without any additional filtering structures. The lower patches consist of a square patch with truncated corners, two sets of parasitic patches, and a 50 Ω microstrip line with a quarter-wavelength impedance matching line at the front end. The upper patch consists of a square patch with a corner-truncated and etched crossed slots. Two CP antenna axial ratio (AR) minima are generated by the stacked patches with corner-truncated and crossed slot, respectively. Three radiation nulls are generated by the parasitic patches on both sides of the lower main patch, crossed slot, and parasitic patches on both sides of the quarter-wavelength impedance matching line, respectively. The proposed antenna allows for independently controllable radiation nulls. The fabricated antenna has been measured, and the measurement results indicate that the impedance bandwidth is 17.72% (2.16-2.58 GHz), the AR bandwidth is 9.32% (2.25-2.47 GHz), and the peak gain is approximately 7.07 dBi.

Abstract:This study presents the design of a self-packaged substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)-based slot antenna with a low profile at the W-band. A 4 SIW slot antenna array is developed using a standard printed circuit board (PCB) process. Then, the array is embedded in a silicon wafer. The loss of the benzocyclobutene (BCB)-based coplanar waveguide with ground (CPWG) to PCB-based SIW transition is investigated and measured to interconnect and integrate the antenna array with other components. The performance of the SIW-based slot antenna is enhanced about 2 dB without extra feeding networks by using a novel method of parasitic folded patches, and the fractional impedance bandwidth is increased from 10% to 15% by changing the metallic posts besides the SIW. The antennas are fabricated using our in-house silicon-based MEMS photosensitive composite film BCB fabrication process, which is described in detail. The proposed antenna has a measured maximum gain of 11.7 dBi at 98 GHz, with a fractional impedance bandwidth of 17%. Measured results show a close relationship with the simulated values. Compared with other antennas, our proposed antenna exhibits excellent performance, such as high gain, low profile, low loss interconnection structure, and broad bandwidth. Finally, a novel heterogeneous integration transceiver application is introduced. In this application, self-packaged SIW-based slot antennas are integrated with different types of chips. This 1 transmitter and 2 receivers (1T2R) transceiver can be further used in long-range radar detection, vital sign monitoring, and synthetic aperture radar imaging.

Abstract:An effective technique is presented to enhance the bandwidth and reduce the size of an ultralow-profile microstrip antenna. By loading multicouple staggered slots on the patch and using inset feed structure, two TM 10 modes can be excited at two close frequencies and matched well simultaneously. Designs based on the structures with four-, five-, and six-couple staggered slots have been made to demonstrate the effective technique. To the best designed results, the presented ultralow-profile microstrip antenna obtains a bandwidth enhancement of about two times and a size reduction of about 60% compared with the ordinary one. The technique is suitable for radio-frequency front-end antenna integration and package in microwave and millimeter-wave bands

Abstract:A novel compact switched slot antenna has been proposed in this paper, it consists of two slots cut in metal plane and a single feeding stub, and the slots are controlled by two switches mounted in the center of them. When each switch is open, the related slot could be excited, while the short one would be idle and serve as a reflector, the two elements could lead to unidirectional radiation pattern. By switching the switches, the pattern of antenna could be switched accordingly. Experimental results show this antenna has good performance, and the front to back ratio is better than 12dB. Abstract:A novel wide slot antenna with two strips within the circular slot is proposed, which achieves a wide impedance bandwidth of 2.2-11.5 GHz, enough to cover the ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency band ranging from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz defined by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). With the help of the two strips, the radiation pattern can be quite stable across the whole operating band. Moreover, the proposed antenna has a small size and high gain of 5 +/- 2 dBi.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel slot-loaded high-gain circular patch antenna is proposed to realize reconfigurable 45 polarizations. Initially, a pair of y-oriented open slots 1 is loaded to the edges of a TM31-mode circular patch to manipulate its current distribution, which contributes to desired broadside radiation and high directivity. Second, two x-oriented slots 2 and four fan-shaped slots 3, which are mostly parallel to current vectors, are introduced to reconstruct the patch with the least perturbation. By controlling the onoff states of the PIN diodes planted at two ends of each of slots 3, reconfigurable orthogonal 45 polarizations are achieved. Moreover, enhanced polarization discrimination is realized by optimizing the connection strategy between the patch's segments. The simulated and measured results demonstrate that the proposed antenna can achieve reconfigurable 45 polarizations with 5.7 impedance bandwidth, 10.3 dBi realized gain, more than 25 dB polarization discrimination, and 23 dB backside radiation suppression.

Abstract:A low-profile double U-slot microstrip patch antenna with a wide operating bandwidth has been developed in this article. This design produces the dual radiative resonant modes adjacent to each even at the thickness of the antenna of 0.02 lambda(0). An extremely stable radiation gain that varied from 6.2 to 6.8 dBi is achieved within the whole operating band. In addition, detailed parametric studies in this article provide antenna engineers with simple approximate rules that result in an excellent first-pass design with prescribed characteristics requiring only minimal tuning. Finally, the proposed antenna with the thickness of 0.04 lambda(0) is fabricated and measured. Simulated and measured results are found in good agreement with each other. They have evidently illustrated that the bandwidth is increased by 50% compared to the traditional U-slot antenna. With the help of these simple design procedures and examples in this article, antenna designers could easily develop a low-profile broadband antenna.

Abstract:A cross slotted electronic band gap (EBG) with stacked rectangular patches shorted with a shorting pin is proposed in this paper. The study is being done on how the various parameters are varied by changing the probe feed location. The design is constructed by using stacking of patches, shorting pin and cross slotted EBG to form an optimized antenna design with antenna efficiency of approximately 99.06%. The radiation patterns are given at 2.586 GHz which can be used for wireless communications.

An Improved Design of Center-Fed SIW Slot Dual-Layered Substrate Antenna

Abstract:In this paper, a center-fed substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) slot dual-layered substrate antenna is proposed. A bandwidth from 4.86 GHz to 6.75 GHz is obtained with three resonant frequencies. In order to improve the matching performance, 12 slots are introduced in the coupling ring. The refection coefficient of the proposed antenna is improved by more than 20 dB compared to that of the basic antenna without no slot in the ring at 5.88 GHz. A dual-layered substrate (F4B265 and Rogers 5880) is used to optimize the bandwidth. Simulation result display that the antenna reaches up to a bandwidth of 33%. The antenna has a 2 mm low profile and a narrow radius of 38.5 mm. The peak gain of 7.9 dB can be obtained at 6.6 GHz.

Abstract:A novel stacked CP patch antenna with broadband performance is developed and discussed in this paper. We increased the air substrate and used two long coaxial probes to feed the antenna in order to gain broadband CP performance. A hybrid coupler was welded on the feeding circuit to generate two orthogonal modes with 90° phase difference. The measured results show that the antenna have an impedance bandwidth of 28% (VSWR≤2) from 2.18 Ghz to 2.89 Ghz. The antenna shows stable CP characteristics in its impedance band with the axial ratio of no more than 2.
Design of a Novel Low-Profile Wideband Slot Loaded Microstrip Antenna

Abstract:A simple bandwidth enhancement method for low profile E-shaped patch antennas is presented. By introducing a distributed LC circuit into the E-shaped patch antennas,a new resonant frequency closed to that of the E-shaped patch is obtained,thus the bandwidth is widened. Moreover,the air thickness of the E-shaped patch antennas is reduced to only 0.0344λ0. A prototype antenna operated at AMPS band (824~894 MHz) was fabricated and measured. Measured results show that the designed low profile antenna has an impedance bandwidth over 9% for VSWR 2,with a satisfactory radiation performance within the bandwidth. The proposed method is also applicable to the design of other types of low-profile slot-loaded patch antennas.
SIW Slot Array Antenna with Non-Alternating Slot Placement for Impedance Bandwidth Enhancement

Abstract:This paper presents a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) array antenna with non-alternating etched longitudinal slots to realize the impedance bandwidth enhancement. Due to the non-alternating slot placement, the impedance bandwidth of the slot array antenna can be expanded much more compared with that of a conventional slot array antenna, which has a distance of a half waveguide wavelength between two adjacent slots. Considering the dielectric filled in the SIW, the distance between two adjacent slots etched on the same side of the SIW is still less than one wavelength in air. Thus, it can guarantee the good performance. The measured linear array exhibits the enhanced impedance bandwidth of 2.29 times at a return loss of 10 dB when compared to the conventional slot array antenna with the same radiating aperture. A stable radiation pattern bandwidth of 2.27% is also obtained with a gain of 17 dBi at the central frequency of 94 GHz.

Abstract:A novel uniplanar slot dipole antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) is proposed for dual-band operation. The frequency ratio between the first spurious and fundamental modes of the slot dipole antenna can be conveniently adjusted with the use of four slot stubs introduced on its two arms. Furthermore, the radiation patterns at the first spurious mode are modified by adding four parasitic slots along its two arms to resemble those of the fundamental mode. Under the assistance of the slot stubs together with the parasitic slots, another resonant mode can be generated and merged with the first spurious mode, and therefore improve the bandwidth significantly. An antenna prototype was fabricated and measured to validate the design concept. The measured results show that dual-band operation with 10-dB impedance bandwidths of 2.99-3.83 GHz (24.6%) and 5.21-6.89 GHz (27.8%) has been obtained. The antenna has stable broadside and bidirectional radiation patterns with low crosspolarization components over the two operating bands.
