Abstract:The research tendency and applications of multiphase flow were discussed. The effects of tube diameter, liquid viscosity and surface tension on flow patterns were also studied. It was shown that the two phase frictional pressure drop at micro-gravity is of the same order of magnitude as that at normal gravity.

Abstract:Multiphase flows, which are ubiquitous in nature but usually involve complex physical processes, have important applications in many areas of aeronautics, astronautics, the oil and gas industry, combustion, and pharmaceuticals, among others. However, the study of multiphase flows is usually more difficult than its single-phase counterpart due to the presence of complex fluid–fluid and fluid–solid interfaces and the wide range of scales from the microscopic level to macroscopic level. In recent years, new numerical methodologies, experimental techniques, and theoretical analysis tools for studying and analyzing complex multiphase flow problems have advanced significantly. Therefore, this special topic is devoted to the recent advances and developments of these tools in the study of multiphase flows. Thirteen papers have been published and they cover a variety of essential topics, which include multiphase flows with large density ratios and multi-physics fields, particle-laden turbulent flows, boiling flows with phase change, three-phase flows for enhanced oil recovery, and coaxial jets with heat transfer.

Abstract:The study of nanoparticle-laden multiphase flow has received much attention due to its occurrence in a wide range of industrial and natural phenomena. Many of these flows are multi-dimensional multi-species systems involving strong mass, momentum and energy transfer between carrying phase and dispersed particle phase. The purpose of the present paper is to survey some advances on our researches in this field over the last 5 years. Abstract:The erythrocyte and blood flowing in the blood vessel can be treated as the two-phase flow of the mixture of particles and a power-law fluid in a peristaltic tube. In the present work, the peristaltic transport of a power-law fluid and the suspension of particles in a tube is investigated by a perturbation method using the long wavelength approximation. The influence of different parameters on the velocity profile and streamlines is explored. Results show that there is a deflection of the flow field when the power-law index n = 0.5 or 1.5 compared with the Newtonian fluid where the trapping zone is symmetric to a certain cross section. The flux rate and reflux of the material are identified, and the conditions under which the reflux appears are determined. Moreover, a reflux phenomenon occurs near the wall. The trapping zone is related to not only the tube geometry and the flow flux but also the fluid properties. Both the length and width of the trapping zone increase with an increase in θ or ϕ. The trapping zone is more difficult to produce in the shear-thinning fluid than the shear-thickening fluid.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of microfluidic technology and microfluidic devices as a multi-disciplinary research field. Compared to conventional methods, microfluidic technology enables us to precisely manipulate the small volume of multiphase fluids for chemical analysis, advanced materials synthesis, protein crystalliza-tion, single-cell cultivation and detection, information processing, etc. In this paper, we review the multiphase flow phenomena in microfluidic devices, summarize the fluid mechan-ics involved, describe various methods to achieve multiphase microfluidic flow, and analyze the state-of-the-art of applications and challenges in this field. Finally, numerical simulation methods and experimental measurement techniques for multiphase microflows are provided. Opportunities for future research and application of microfluidic devices are suggested.

Abstract:The flow properties in microtubes, such as velocity profiles and pressure distributions, are different from those in macrotubes. We attribute this phenomenon to the molecular interactions between the solid wall and inner liquid. The apparent viscosity, which takes into consideration the molecular interactions, is introduced in the present study and the Navier-Stokes equations are solved. Water is adopted in the calculation. For the hydrophilic material wall, the water is more like to adhere to the wall. The velocity near the wall is smaller than that of conventional theory, while the centerline velocity and pressure gradients are much larger. Such a phenomenon becomes much more obvious with the decrease in tube diameter.
The Effect of Surface Tension on Flow Condensation in Vertical Small-Diameter Tube

Abstract:The effect of surface tension on flow condensation in vertical small tube with inside diameter of 1-5 mm is compared with that of gravity and shear stress in different gravity environments at low Reynolds number, which is less concerned in former studies. The present study indicates that surface tension is the most important factor affecting flow condensation, but it is weakened by shear stress as decreasing tube diameter in a microgravity environment. In a normal gravity environment, body force is the dominant effect that is weakened by shear stress as decreasing tube diameter, while the effect of capillary pressure drop due to surface tension is enhanced. The work will be helpful in understanding the characteristics of heat pipe or capillary pumped loop (CPL) at low Reynolds number.

Abstract:Spatial phase distributions for various flow patterns and two phase flow frictional pressure drops of air-water flow in a horizontal helically coiled rectangular tube were experimentally investigated at the liquid and gas superficial velocities of 0.11 - 2 m/s and 0.13 - 16 m/s. Local void factions in the helically coiled tube were measured with electric conductivity probes and the corresponding flow regimes were recorded with a high-speed video camera simultaneously. The local void fractions and spatial phase distributions for various flow regimes were analyzed according to the physical mechanisms. The spatial phase distributions of gas liquid two-phase flow in the helically coiled tube are mainly affected by the gravitational and centrifugal forces. The measured single-phase flow and two-phase flow pressure drops have been analyzed for various flow regimes. A correlation was proposed to predict the friction pressure drop of single-phase flow in the helically coiled tube. The existing gas-liquid two- phase pressure drop frictional correlations were compared to the experimental frictional pressure drop data. The Awwad et al. correlation [Int. J. Multiphase Flow, 21 (1995), 607-619] predicts 91% of the experimental data within ±30%.

Abstract:A theoretical model of liquid-liquid two-phase flow in a T-shaped microchannel was developed and numerically analyzed by Lattice Boltzmann method to investigate liquid-liquid two-phase flow regimes and affecting factors. The theoretical model was verified using experimental data available in literature. The results indicate that the flow patterns of liquid-liquid flow are dependent on the flow rate ratio of the two inlets and Weber number of the dispersed phase in a T-shaped microchannel. Three typical flow patterns in a T-shaped microchannel including droplet flow, jet flow and parallel flow are obtained by varying flow rate ratio and Weber number of the dispersed phase. The relative length of the dispersed phase is obviously affected by the capillary number of the continuous phase. When the capillary number of the continuous phase is relatively large, the dispersed phase forms droplets, and the relative length of dispersed phase decreases monotonously with the increase of the capillary number of the continuous phase.

Abstract:Experimental studies of air–water two-phase flows in a mini tube with an inner diameter of 3.12 mm have been conducted in terms of the flow pattern, void fraction, and pressure gradients. The fluid velocities range from 0.065 to 21.78 m/s and from 0.109 to 1.835 m/s, respectively. A right-angle prism is applied to capture images simultaneously from two perpendicular directions. Three-dimensional gas–liquid interfaces are reconstructed with the obtained images from two directions. The gas void fraction is investigated using this method, which is experimentally validated with the quick closing valves method. Three flow patterns are obtained in the present work, which is bubbly, slug, and annular flows. The Probability Density Functions of the cross-sectional void fraction show that the intermittent flow has two peaks and the annular flow has only one peak. Volumetric void fraction is affected by the flow pattern and the flow rate. However, at very high gas velocities, volumetric void fraction is independent of the liquid rate. A new frictional pressure drop correlation is proposed based on the experimental data.

Abstract:Droplet-based microfluidic has promising prospects in chemical engineering and biomedicine.Liquid-liquid multiphase flow is the most common flow condition in microchannels,which is relevant in control of droplet dynamics.Thorough research on characteristics of the fluid dynamics is essential in the design of optimized microfluidic devices.A comprehensive review of numerical methods commonly used is presented in this paper.Classified by continuum approaches and lattice-Boltzmann approaches,recent progresses in numerical simulations of liquid-liquid multiphase flow in microchannels are covered.The interface tracking and interface capturing methods are particularly discussed and various numerical models based on the two schemes are introduced.The applications of popular models and numerical results are reviewed with comparisons of their advantages and limitations.The conclusions could be an effective theoretical support for hydrodynamics of interface behaviors in microscale.In addition,multi phase flow coupled with complex interactions of the interface is involved in microchannels,the mechanisms of many phenomenons are still waiting to be revealed.And more accurate description of the interface and the fluid dynamics based on models that require less computation cost is the tendency of numerical simulation on fluid flow in microchannels.

Abstract:Gas-liquid-liquid (G/L/L) multiphase flow in microfluidic system has been a vital part of microfluidics, micro-chemical and micro-analysis in recent years. Microfluidics has emerged as a useful tool to prepare G/L/L that affords improved control over the micro-scale structure. With the aid of clever and efficient device designs, precise regulation of the size, shape and components can be realized. Existing results have shown that G/L/L multiphase micro-flow exhibits more complicated laws and unique characteristics in flow, transport and reactions compared with liquid-liquid or gas-liquid two-phase flow, allowing the optimal and more efficient control of the process. In this review, focused on the G/L/L multiphase flow in microfluidic systems, we recount the historical development of this system and approach, along with the state-of-the-art, including discussion of microfluidic devices (lithographically defined devices and capillary/needle-based devices) and microchannel type (cross-junction, flow-focusing, dual-coaxial, etc.) used to form and prepare G/L/L multiphase mixtures. Discussion is also extended to scaling laws and numerical simulations used to predict the size of microbubbles or droplets. In addition, flow and mass transfer characteristics, as well as applications and scale-up, are also discussed. Finally, the future trends in the development of G/L/L multiphase flow are addressed, emphasizing some directions worth detailed study and remaining challenges in the field. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Multiphase microfluidic applications are very broad, ranging from DNA analysis such as PCR in droplets to chemical synthesis [20]. Optimal design and operation of such systems need insightful understanding of fundamental multiphase flow physics at microscale. In this chapter, we discuss some basic flow physics of multiphase microdroplets. The important dimensionless parameters relating to droplet dynamics are elaborated. We use droplet generation processes as examples to explain rich flow physics involved in microdroplet dynamics.
