The results show that the properties of flow have an effect on the motion of particle. The conclusions drawn in the paper are helpful for the design of apparatus of pneumatic conveying for the cylindrical particles.

Abstract:A theoretical method to study the motion of cylindrical particles was given. Based on the theory about the motion of single particle, the motion of a group of cylindrical particles in the parallel flows was studied. The equations of cylindrical. particle's horizontal and vertical motion in the parallel flows were derived. The velocity of particles was discussed with different parameters changing. The results given in the paper are helpful to the engineering usage.

Abstract:The coupled translational-rotational motion of small, cylindrical particles in a shear layer is studied. The flow is simulated by pseudo-spectral method and each particle is traced with Lagrangian method. The fluid dynamic force including Stokes resistance, added mass and Basset force and torque operating on the particles with length-to-width ratio of 30 are numerically computed for very small Re based on particle and continuous-fluid conditions. Significant differences of the dispersion persist for various particle/fluid density ratio and Stokes number. ft is shown that the distribution of particles is strongly influenced by the coherent structure.

Abstract:The study of nanoparticle-laden multiphase flow has received much attention due to its occurrence in a wide range of industrial and natural phenomena. Many of these flows are multi-dimensional multi-species systems involving strong mass, momentum and energy transfer between carrying phase and dispersed particle phase. The purpose of the present paper is to survey some advances on our researches in this field over the last 5 years. The research includes the closure for particle general dynamic equation; the fundamental interaction between particle dynamics and flow coherent structures; theoretical analysis on nanoparticle collision rate; and the application of theoretical works in some specific problems.

Abstract:Suspension of solid particle in non-Newtonian fluid has a wide range of applications, and its special flow properties make it the core breakthrough point in some new technology fields. Meanwhile, the flow is more complex. Even in the case of low particle concentration, the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid have an important influence on the microstructure of the whole system, which further affects the movement of solid particles. In this paper, the non-Newtonian fluid equation, particle motion equation and characteristic parameter of suspension of solid particle in non-Newtonian fluid are given, and the effect of these parameters is analyzed. The research findings, result analysis and open questions of some topics including the radial motion of single solid particle in a pipe, the interaction and aggregation of multi-particles, the chain structure formed by multi-particles, and motion of non-spherical particles are related. Finally, the topics mentioned above are summarized and prospected, and the concrete problems and contents that need to be studied deeply are given, which is aimed at providing references and basis for further research.

Abstract:The granular materials are utilized in a wide variety of industrial applications.The complex hydrodynamics of granular flow is still not fully understood.The models for particle flow are reviewed including continuum mechanics methods and discrete mechanics methods.The continuum mechanics methods are simple but have low accuracy.The discrete mechanics methods are fully based on the Lagrangian approach for the simulation of motion of granular material on the microscopic level of particles,and can describe the motion of particles more accurately.The theory and the applications of these models are briefly described.It is clear that every model has its own application range.It needs to make a further research on the model for particle flow in order to describe the motion of granular materials more factually and conveniently.

Abstract:In this paper, the three-dimensional vortex filament method was used to simulate the evolution of vortex structures in the axisymmetric round jet. The results agree well with the ones given by Chung and Troutt. Then one-coupling model was employed to calculate the particle motion based on the computed flows. The results show that the particle motion is affected by flows obviously at the case of particle number St≪1 and negligibly at St≫1, particles distribute around the vortex structures uniformly at St ∼ 1. When perturbations with wavenumber 5 are introduced to vortex rings, particles disperse wider along radial direction, which conforms to the experimental results. The degree of particle dispersion is in the direct ratio to the amplitude of perturbation. The conclusions given in the paper are useful to the practice usage.

Abstract:Multiphase flow with self-driven particles is ubiquitous and complex. Exploring the flow properties has both important academic meaning and engineering value. This review emphasizes some recent studies on multiphase flow with self-driven particles: the hydrodynamic interactions between self-propelled/self-rotary particles and passive particles; the aggregation, phase separation and sedimentation of squirmers; the influence of rheological properties on its motion; and the kinematic characteristics of axisymmetric squirmers. Finally, some open problems, challenges, and future directions are highlighted.

Abstract:The sedimentations of two cylindrical particles in three different initial relative positions are numerically simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The movement characteristics and particle interactions during their sedimentation are presented and discussed in detail. The results show that, (i) if the two particles are released parallel but separated horizontally, they push away each other, rotate inwards and separate horizontally as they fall; (ii) if the two particles are released parallel but separated vertically, the sedimentation behavior can be classified into three stages: trailing, tumbling and separating; (iii) if the two particles are released perpendicular but separated vertically, the sedimentation behavior can be characterized as: trailing and rotating, touching and sliding. In order to validate our simulation, experiments were also conducted and the results agree well with the numerical ones.

Abstract:Evolution of vortex structures in round jet was simulated with a three-dimensional discrete vortex filament method. The motion of the particles was described by a Lagrangian equation and the counteraction of particles on the flow was taken into account by using a modified velocity model. It is indicated that in two-phase jet flow the introduced particles restrain the crosswise dispersion of jet shear layer and mergence of vortex structures. With the increase of St number, the influence of flow on particles motion is decreased, but the counteraction of particles on the flow is increased. The difference of flow field obtained with two models, one-way coupling model and two-way coupling model, is greater than that of particles trajectories.

Abstract:In the cases of Reynolds number Re=3 000~50 000, Stokes number Stk=0.1~10, Dean number De=1 400~2 800, the orientation and deposition characteristics of cylindrical particles with aspect ratio β=2~12 in turbulent flow in curved tubes were studied. The motion of cylindrical particles was described under the slender body theory combined with Newton’s 2nd law. The orientation distribution function of cylindrical particles was given by the Fokker Planck equation. The mean velocity of the flow was obtained by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation and the Reynolds stress equation. The turbulent fluctuating velocity acting on particles was described with the kinetic simulation sweeping model. By solving the equations of the turbulent flow, the particle motion and the orientation distribution function, the orientation distributions of particles on the cross sections in different axial positions and the outlet were obtained and analyzed. The effects of various parameters on the deposition rate of particles were discussed. The results showed that, the main axis of particles turns toward the flow direction with the increase of Stk and β, and the decrease of De and Re. The deposition rate of particles increases with De, Re and β. However, it shows a non-monotonic trend with the change of Stk . The work has reference values for practical engineering application.

Abstract:With consideration of the Stokes drag and virtual mass force, the equations for mean and fluctuating velocities in rotation and translation were given for rigid cylindrical particles moving in a turbulent flow. Then the rotational and translational dispersion coefficients of particle were derived. The relationships between the dispersion coefficients and flow length scale as well as particle characteristic parameters were analyzed. The resulting dispersion coefficients were proved to decrease as the particle length increases. The conclusions are helpful for the further research on the motion of cylindrical particles in turbulent flows.

Abstract:Discrete element method simulations of granular shear flows of frictional cylindrical particles are per-formed.From the simulations,solid-phase pressure,shear stress,and bulk friction coefficient μ can be measured,allowing the investigation of the effects of particle properties on the macroscopic flow behaviors.Thus,the inertial number I based rheological models,which were frequently used for the spherical particles in the previous work,are examined for the applicability to cylindrical particles in the present study.It is found that the particle aspect ratio,interparticle friction coefficient,and particle size polydispersity all affect the bulk friction coefficient-inertial number correlation and the solid vol-ume fraction-inertial number correlation,and their effects vary in different flow regimes,which exhibit different mechanical behaviors.

Abstract:Distribution and deposition of cylindrical nanoparticles in a turbulent pipe flow are investigated numerically. The equations of turbulent flow including the effect of particles are solved together with the mean equations of the particle number density and the probability density function for particle orientation including the combined effect of Brownian and turbulent diffusion. The results show that the distribution of the particle concentration on the cross-section becomes non-uniform along the flow direction, and the non-uniformity is reduced with the increases of the particle aspect ratio and Reynolds number. More and more particles will align with their major axis near to the flow direction, and this phenomenon becomes more obvious with increasing the particle aspect ratio and with decreasing the Reynolds number. The particles in the near-wall region are aligned with the flow direction obviously, and only a slight preferential orientation is observed in the vicinity of pipe’s center. The penetration efficiency of particle decreases with increasing the particle aspect ratio, Reynolds number and pipe length-to-diameter ratio. Finally, the relationship between the penetration efficiency of particle and related synthetic parameters is established based on the numerical data.

Abstract:The sedimentation of cylindrical pollutant particles which fall through a fluid is investigated. Differing from previous research work, particle oscillation and effect of particle on the fluid are considered, and the torque exerted on a particle when viscous fluid flow around a particle is got through experiment and included in the numerical simulation. The computational results showed that the sedimentation velocities of particle increase slowly with the increase of particle aspect ratio phi. For disk-like particle, when the motion direction of particle is parallel to axis of particle, particle falls more slowly than the case of perpendicular to axis of particle; while for rod-like particle, it is inverse. For sedimentation of a crowd of high-frequency oscillating cylindrical particles with arbitrary initial orientation, both vertical velocity and horizontal velocity oscillate dramatically, the degree of oscillation of the former is stronger than the later. A crowd of particles fall more quickly than an isolated particle. Particles tend to strongly align in the direction of gravity. The computational results agreed well with the experimental ones and helpful for controlling of pollutant particles.
