Abstract:A series of Mn-complexes with tetradentate N4 ligands, introducing aromatic groups into 2-pyridylmethyl positions of N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (mep), N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)cyclohexane-trans-diamine (mcp), have been synthesized and applied for epoxidation of olefins using H2O2 as the oxidant. The Mn-complexes still possessed an octahedral mononuclear structure in a cis-α topology. These complexes showed good regioselectivity, high yields and turnover frequency (even up to 228,000h−1) with low catalyst loading (0.1–0.01mol%) for epoxidation of a family of olefins (including internal aromatic olefins, internal and terminal aliphatic olefins and diolefins).

Abstract:Solid supports are crucial in heterogeneous catalysis due to their profound effects on catalytic activity and selectivity. However, elucidating the specific effects arising from such supports remains challenging. We selected a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with 8-connected Zr6 nodes as supports to deposit molybdenum(VI) onto to study the effects of pore environment and topology on the resulting Mo-supported catalysts. As characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), we modulated the chemical environments of the deposited Mo species. For Mo-NU-1000, the Mo species monodentately bound to the Zr6 nodes were anchored in the microporous c-pore, but for Mo-NU-1008 they were bound in the mesopore of Mo-NU-1008. Both monodentate and bidentate modes were found in the mesopore of Mo-NU-1200. Cyclohexene epoxidation with H2O2 was probed to evaluate the support effect on catalytic activity and to unveil the resulting structure-activity relationships. SCXRD and XAS studies demonstrated the atomically precise structural differences of the Mo binding motifs over the course of cyclohexene epoxidation. No apparent structural change was observed for Mo-NU-1000, whereas the monodentate mode of Mo species in Mo-NU-1008 and the monodentate and bidentate Mo species in Mo-NU-1200 evolved to a new bidentate mode bound between two adjacent oxygen atoms from the Zr6 node. This work demonstrates the great advantage of using MOF supports for constructing heterogeneous catalysts with modulated chemical environments of an active species and elucidating structure-activity relationships in the resulting reactions.
Epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide catalyzed by μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins

Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to make propylene oxide catalyzed by μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins is investigated.The results indicate that the reaction temperature,reaction time,molar ratio of acraldehyde to propylene,and concentration and type of catalysts have significant effects on the reaction.The appropriate reaction conditions are as follows:100℃,1.5 h,500 rpm for stirring velocity,n (acraldehyde) ∶n (propylene)=0.625,catalyst concentration at 9.72×10-5mol％.The central metal and substituent group ofμ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins also have influence on catalytic activity.The catalytic activity order of different substituent group of μ-oxo-bismetalloporphyrins are —OCH3 ＞—H＞—F.With different central metal,the catalytic activity order are Fe＞Cu.Of which the best catalytic result is given by [T(p-OCH3) PPFe] 2 O,with the yield,selectivity and conversion rate being 27.31％,93.95％ and 29.06％ respectively.

Abstract:The dioxygen affinities and biomimetic catalytic performance of transition-metal complexes with (15-crown-5) salophen and its substituted derivatives Mere examined. The oxygenation constants of Co(II) complexes with crowned bis-Schiff bases were measured and their Mn(III) complexes were employed as models to mimic monooxygenase in catalytic epoxidation of styrene. The highest conversion and selectivity were up to 57.2% and 100% respectively at ambient temperature and pressure. The effects of crown ether ring and substituents R on the dioxygen affinities and catalytic activities were also investigated through comparing with the uncrowned analogues.

Abstract:A series of functional cation-regulated isopolymolybdate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, Na2H2[Mo4O12(C8H17O5N)2]·10H2O (1), Na2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·10H2O [M = Cu, 2; Ni, 3; Co, 4; Zn, 5; Bis-tris = 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2″-nitrilotriethanol], and (NH4)2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·6H2O (M = Zn, 6; Cu, 7), were synthesized and characterized toward advanced molecular catalyst design. Compound 1 is a covalently bonded adduct, and its self-assembly process can be probed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Compounds 2-7 are polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrids containing classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations with Bis-tris ligands. All of these compounds showed remarkable catalytic effects for selective sulfide oxidation. To the best of our knowledge, compound 5 presents the best catalytic activity so far among the reported hybrid materials with common easily synthesized small-molecule POM clusters and also exhibits outstanding reliability. The conclusion of the catalytic effect is drawn from the results that Zn-based compounds have better catalytic effects than other transition-metal-containing compounds and the compound constructed by Na+ has higher catalytic activity than that constructed by NH4+. The mechanism studies show that the improvements of the catalytic performance are caused by the synergy between classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations. ESI-MS data and UV-vis spectra revealed that the POM anions can form intermediate peroxomolybdenum units during catalytic reaction. Further, the combination of the substrate thioanisole with complex cations was characterized by NMR experiments and UV-vis spectra. Thus, a new synergistic mechanism of anions and cations is proposed in which the activated thioanisole is used as a nucleophile to attack the peroxomolybdenum bonds, and this provides a new strategy in the design of reliable POM-based catalysts.

Abstract:The oxygenation constants of transition-metal complexes with benzoin Schiff bases were measured and these complexes were first employed as models for mimicking monooxygenase in catalytic epoxidation of styrene. The highest conversion and selectivity were up to 39.6% and 100% respectively at ambient temperature and pressure. The effects of structures of the bridge group R in the ligands on the dioxygen affinities and catalytic activities to epoxidize styrene were also investigated.
A DFT study of epoxidation of propylene on dimer MoO(x)

Abstract:Propylene oxide is an important chemical raw material. In this paper, Density Functional Theory (DFT) was used to calculate the epoxidation of propylene on the dimer MoOx by Gaussian 09 software. Firstly, we established the structure of the dimer MoOx/SiO2 and analyzed it, and then calculated the dehydrogenation process of propylene and the formation process of PO. It was found that the activity of O in Mo-O-Si was higher, which was beneficial to the AHS process of C3H6, but the reaction activity of different O substances to the formation of PO was very low. In order to solve this problem, we established a dimer MoOx model with defect sites, and found that the defect sites in the dimer could effectively activate O2 (O2- 2), and the activated material O had high PO selectivity. Compared with process of AHS and the process of PO formation, the energy barrier of PO formation path was very low, which was the main product. At the same time, we also established the MoOx model of Fe doped dimer and the MoOx model of Fe doped defect dimer. It was found that the MoOx clusters were more active due to Fe doping, and the energy barriers of both AHS process and PO formation path were greatly reduced compared with those before doping. The presence of Fe made it easier for the dimer MoOx to form defect sites, which made it easier to activate O2 (O- 2) and reduced the energy barriers of both AHS and PO formation processes.
Olefin Metathesis over Heterogeneous Catalysts: Interfacial Interaction Between Mo Species and a Hβ−Al2O3 Composite Support

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.
Mechanism Insights into Allylic Hydroxylation versus Epoxidation of Propene Catalyzed by Model Catalyst Iron Phthalocyanine in the Presence of Hydrogen Peroxide

Abstract:High-valent metal-oxo species are key reactive intermediates in many biological and biological oxidation reactions. Herein, allylic hydroxylation (C-H) versus epoxidation (C═C) reactions of propene with a model catalyst iron phthalocyanine (FePc) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide were investigated contrastively, aiming to probe the active intermediates, structure-activity relationship, and reaction pathways. Our results showed that H2O2 as an oxygen-donor reagent can be easily decomposed on FePc to produce key active intermediates O═FePc and O═FePc═O with the energy barriers of 19.57 and 23.89 kcal/mol, respectively. In the selective oxidation of propene, O═FePc has a small preference for C═C epoxidation over C-H hydroxylation while O═FePc═O has a small preference for C-H hydroxylation. Since the electron-withdrawing O axial ligand in O═FePc═O further increases the radical character (Fe-O·) and Fe-O bond length of the iron-oxo moiety, O═FePc═O has better catalytic performance in both C═C epoxidation and C-H hydroxylation than O═FePc. Furthermore, in the whole reaction processes, the dual-hydrogen bonds between the two terminal H atoms of the alkene and allylic groups of propene and oxygen atom of the iron-oxo moiety would lead to the reaction toward C═C epoxidation while the single-hydrogen bond between the terminal H atom of the allylic group and the oxygen atom of the iron-oxo moiety would lead to the reaction toward C-H hydroxylation, implying that the weakly interacting hydrogen bonds affecting oxidation pathways also play a very important role in the regioselectivity of C═C epoxidation and C-H hydroxylation.
Mechanistic Insights into Propene Epoxidation with O2–H2O Mixture on Au7/α-Al2O3: A Hydroproxyl Pathway from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:We have studied the mechanism of propene epoxidation with O-2-H2O mixture on Au-7/alpha-Al2O3(0001) using global minimum approach, density functional theory (DFT), and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) methods. It is found that water can easily dissociate on coordinatively unsaturated surface Al sites to form a hydroxylated Al2O3 surface. The Au-7 cluster on such a surface prefers anchoring at bare Al sites and transfers from upright to flat structures with a decrease of surface hydroxyl groups. The activation of molecular oxygen via a hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate (i.e., O-2 abstracting a hydrogen atom from coadsorbed water) is identified to be a feasible pathway from both AIMD simulations and static DFT calculations. Additional water promotes the H-transfer process by constructing a hydrogen bonding chain with reactants. The resulting OOH turns out to be a key oxidative species for subsequent propene epoxidation. It can either dissociate into atomically oxygen species to epoxide propene or combine with propene directly, forming an important *C3H6OOH species that could be easily transformed to epoxypropane. study reveals the important role of water in propene epoxidation and may stimulate further exploration and the usage of O2-H2O mixture as oxidizing agent in other oxidation reactions.
Transition States of Epoxidations: Diradical Character, Spiro Geometries, Transition State Flexibility, and the Origins of Stereoselectivity

Abstract:The transition structures for the epoxidations of ethylene by performic acid, dioxirane, oxaziridine, and peroxynitrous acid have been located with density functional theory methods using the Becke3LYP functional and 6-31G* basis set. All of the epoxidations have spiro transition states; those with performic acid and dioxirane are early and involve synchronous oxygen transfer, while those with oxaziridine and peroxynitrous acid are later with asynchronous oxygen transfer. The results from Becke3LYP/6-31G* theory are compared with MP2/6-31G* literature values. Substitution on ethylene by methoxy, methyl, vinyl, and cyano groups changes the transition state geometries toward asynchronous spiro structures. The activation energies are lowered by all substituents except the cyano group in reactions of performic acid and dioxirane. Experimental stereoselectivities are rationalized by using transition structure models based upon these transition structures.
Implication of oxidant activation on olefin epoxidation catalysed by Molybdenum catalysts with aroylhydrazonato ligands: Experimental and theoretical studies

Abstract:Dinuclear and mononuclear molybdenum(VI) complexes with aroylhydrazonato ligands were studied as catalysts for cyclooctene and oct-1-ene epoxidation. Different isomers of the OH and NH2 functionalised aroylhydrazones led to four specific [MoO2L] units showing different catalytic activity. Three oxidants have been investigated: tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP) in water or in decane, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Catalytic processes with TBHP in decane provided outstanding results in the case of cyclooctene epoxidation: TOF2.5 min > 9000 with 0.25 mol % [Mo] loading. DFT calculations confirmed the relationship between the ligand nature and reactivity with TBHP and H2O2 as oxidant agents. In the case of TBHP as oxidant, calculations considered the solvent in which the oxidant is delivered to the olefin. A plausible mechanism with H2O2 has been proposed after considering various pathways.

Abstract:With the objective to realize efficient and selective oxidation of hydrocarbons with O2 to partial oxidation products, 2D metal–organic frameworks (2D MOFs) possessing bimetallic active centers (Co&Cu, Co&Zn, Cu&Zn) were prepared to construct confined catalytic domains and staged oxidation sites. All the 2D MOFs were characterized systematically through FT-IR, XPS, PXRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET and TG analyses. Applied to the partial oxidation of C-H bonds with O2, superior catalytic performance was observed in the employment of 2D MOF Co-TCPPCu as catalyst, in which both of the conversion and selectivity towards partial oxidation products were enhanced simultaneously. The superior performance of oxidation system employing Co-TCPPCu as catalyst was mainly because of the decreased disordered autoxidation at lower reaction temperature, suppressed free radical diffusion in the confined catalytic domains of Co-TCPPCu, and enhanced oxidation of C-H bonds with oxidation intermediate product R-OOH catalyzed by second metal center Cu(II). For the important and classical oxidation of cyclohexane in chemical industry, the conversion was increased from 4.39% to 5.31% with the selectivity towards partial oxidation products being enhanced from 85% to 95% compared with homogeneous metalloporphyrin T(4-COOCH3)PPCo as catalyst. The staged oxidation paths and catalytic mechanism were also explored systematically through control experiments, free radical capture and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses. This work presented an intelligent and valuable reference not only for the selective and efficient oxidative functionalization of hydrocarbons with O2 in both of the industrial application and academic research, but also for other important chemical transformations involved in free radicals.

Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Organic metalloporphyrins and inorganic polyoxometalates (POMs) are two kinds of efficient molecular catalysts to prompt a variety of chemical reactions. They have been used as active moieties for the synthesis of porous materials to realize highly efficient heterogeneous catalysis. Both of them are regarded as the organic/inorganic equivalent counterparts to complement the individual features. Therefore, the combination of metalloporphyrins and POMs in the same hybrid materials might generate interesting catalytic properties by emerging their unique individual functions. To avoid the random connections between metalloporphyrins, POMs, and lanthanide connecting nodes, we have developed a "step-by-step" aggregation strategy, including the reaction of POMs with metal ions to bind metal nodes on the surfaces of POMs at the first step and the reaction of the resulting POM derivatives with metalloporphyrin linkers to result in hybrid materials at the second step. Catalytic experiments demonstrate that the resulting hybrid material exhibits interesting catalytic properties in the heterogeneous epoxidation of olefins, in which the conversion, epoxide selectivity, turnover number, and turnover frequency for the epoxidation of styrene to (1,2-epoxyethyl)benzene are >99%, 94%, 220000, and 22000 h(-1), respectively. These results demonstrate that the collaborative work of multiple active sites in hybrid materials can achieve superior high efficiency in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Metal-modified catalysts have attracted extraordinary research attention in heterogeneous catalysis due to their enhanced geometric and electronic structures and outstanding catalytic performances. Silver (Ag) possesses necessary active sites for ethylene epoxidation, but the catalyst activity is usually sacrificed to obtain high selectivity towards ethylene oxide (EO). Herein, we report that using Al can help in tailoring the unoccupied 3d state of Ag on the MnO2 support through strong electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs), overcoming the activity-selectivity trade-off for ethylene epoxidation and resulting in a very high ethylene conversion rate (~100%) with 90% selectivity for EO under mild conditions (170 oC and atmospheric pressure). Structural characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the EMSIs obtained by the Al modification tailor the unoccupied 3d state of Ag, modulating the adsorption of ethylene (C2H4) and oxygen (O2) and facilitating EO desorption, resulting in high C2H4 conversion. Meanwhile, the increased number of positively charge Ag+ lowers the energy barrier for C2H4(ads) oxidation to produce oxametallacycle (OMC), inducing the unexpectedly high EO selectivity. Such an extraordinary electronic promotion provides new promising pathways for designing advanced metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity in selective oxidation reactions.
