Abstract:The acceleration of an electron by a circularly polarized, high-intensity ultrashort laser pulse in vacuum is studied. It appears that the energy of the electron can be accelerated significantly, and the electron moves almost along the propagation direction of the laser pulse.

Abstract:Electron acceleration by transversely echelon phase-modulated (EPM) circularly polarized (CP) intense laser pulse is investigated. Solution of the relativistic electron equations of motion shows that the CP EPM light wave structure can disrupt the harmonic response of a trapped electron not only in the transverse direction but also in the direction of laser propagation. In each laser cycle, there can be a net gain in the electron's transverse momentum, which is promptly converted into the forward direction by the Lorentz force. As a result, the electron can be trapped and accelerated in the favorable phase of the laser for a rather long time. Its momentum gain then accumulates and can eventually reach high levels. It is also found that with the CP EPM laser, the net acceleration of the electron is not sensitive to its initial position and velocity relative to the phase of the laser fields, so that such a laser can also be useful for accelerating thermal electron bunches to high energies.

Abstract:Electron acceleration, in vacuum, mediated by an intense echelon phase-modulated long Gaussian laser pulse, is investigated here. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that this pulse can accelerate an electron to much higher energies than an unmodulated pulse. The staircase-like phase structure of the laser field encourages electron trapping in the favorable wave phase, greatly increasing the effective acceleration distance. Also, the electron motion is now more in the laser propagation direction. The conditions for efficient acceleration are obtained. Since the slower electrons can also be efficiently accelerated to high energies and the accelerated electrons are more axially oriented, the average energy gain by an initially Maxwellian electron bunch can be more than 13 times that obtained without the echelon phase modulation. This is at the expense of somewhat increased spatial and thermal spread, and the accelerated bunch is also more collimated.

Abstract:By numerically solving the relativistic equations of motion of a single electron in laser fields modeled by a Gaussian laser beam, we get the trajectory and energy of the electron. When the drifting distance is comparable to or even longer than the corresponding Rayleigh length, the evolution of the beam waist cannot be neglected. The asymmetry of intensity in acceleration and deceleration leads to the conclusion that the electron can be accelerated effectively and extracted by the longitudinal ponderomotive force. For intensities above 1019 W μm2/cm2, an electron's energy gain about MeV can be realized, and the energetic electron is parallel with the propagation axis.

Abstract:Electrons accelerated by a propagating laser pulse of linear or circular polarization in vacuum have been investigated by one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical modeling. A stopping target is used to stop the laser pulse and extract the energetic electrons from the laser field. The effect of the reflected light is taken into account. The maximum electron energy depends on the laser intensity and initial electron energy. There is an optimal acceleration length for electrons to gain maximum energy where electrons meet the peak of the laser pulse. The optimal acceleration length depends strongly on the laser pulse duration and amplitude. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:A low-energy relativistic free electron capture and violently acceleration by a tightly focused ultra-short ultra-intense laser pulse in vacuum is presented in this paper. The results show that the electron is mainly accelerated by the long itudinal ponderomotive force and the energy gain is sensitively dependent on the retarded time, initial energy and the incident angle of electron. On the other hand, the energy gain is not very sensitive to the pulse width when it is larger than 10λ.

Abstract:Ponderomotive-force driven acceleration of an electron at the focus of a high-intensity short-pulse laser is considered using a model that the electrons accelerated are near the focus but decelerated far away the focus. For intensities above 1019Wμm2/cm2, the electron's energy gain in the range of MeV can be realized when the electron leaves the laser pulse. Final energy gain of the electron as a function of its initial position has also been discussed. We find that an electron initially near the focus can be accelerated well.

Abstract:The acceleration of electrons by the self-generated quasi-static magnetic field in the interaction of n laser pulses with a plasma is investigated. The relativistic dynamics of a single electron is followed numerically. It is found that the electron can be much more effectively accelerated by n laser pulses, each with amplitude a(0) and having a fixed frequency difference from the preceding one, than by a single pulse with amplitude na(0). The large enhancement of acceleration can be attributed to stochastic-like resonance between the electron motion at the beat-frequencies of lasers and at the cyclotron motion frequency.

Abstract:Acceleration of a pre-accelerated electron by an ultra-short and ultra-intense laser pulse in vacuum has been explored. The deceleration by the descending part of the laser pulse can be neglected when the pre-accelerated electron is accelerated by the ascending part of the pulse. Because the acceleration distance is much longer than for a initially stationary electron, the energy gain is much larger. The net energy gain can be up to 0.1 GeV with a laser intensity of 10(19) W/cm(2) and an initial electron energy of 4.5 MeV. Final energy gain of the electron as a function of its initial condition and laser parameters has also been discussed.

Abstract:Electron acceleration in vacuum induced by a tightly focused chirped laser pulse has been studied. For a fixed laser output power, the tightly focused chirped laser pulse can accelerate electrons to much higher energies. Focusing laser down to the order of wavelength requires inclusion of terms of third order at least in the diffraction angle epsilon in the description of the associated field. Retained electron energy depends strongly on frequency chirp parameter and initial position of the electron. Besides, retained energy increases with laser intensity, pulse duration, and initial velocity of electron, and varies periodically with laser constant phase.

Abstract:An analytical expression based on the paraxial approximation describing the propagation of a subcycle axicon Gaussian laser pulse in vacuum is obtained. The broad spectrum of the ultrashort pulse is given in terms of a Taylor series in the main wave frequency. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the pulse are strongly coupled. The model is used to consider electron acceleration by the light pressure of an intense subcycle laser pulse. The pulse model can also be applied to other short pulse profiles.

Abstract:Exact closed-form solutions to Maxwell's equations are used to investigate the acceleration of electrons in vacuum driven by ultrashort and nonparaxial radially polarized laser pulses. We show that the threshold power above which significant acceleration takes place is greatly reduced by using a tighter focus. Moreover, electrons accelerated by tightly focused single-cycle laser pulses may reach around 80% of the theoretical energy gain limit, about twice the value previously reported with few-cycle paraxial pulses. Our results demonstrate that the direct acceleration of electrons in vacuum is well within reach of current laser technology.

Abstract:Electron acceleration from the interaction of an intense short-pulse laser with low density plasma is considered. The relation between direct electron acceleration within the laser pulse and that in the wake is investigated analytically. The magnitude and location of the ponderomotive-force-caused charge separation field with respect to that of the pulse determine the relative effectiveness of the two acceleration mechanisms. It is shown that there is an optimum condition for acceleration in the wake. Electron acceleration within the pulse dominates as the pulse becomes sufficiently short, and the latter directly drives and even traps the electrons. The latter can reach ultrahigh energies and can be extracted by impinging the pulse on a solid target.

Abstract:By using the corrected solutions for an ultrashort laser pulse, we study the laser-driven electron violent acceleration in vacuum. Our simulations demonstrate that an ultrashort laser pulse with an intensity a(0) = eE(0)/m(e)omegac = 3 can accelerate electrons to an energy more than 0.5 GeV The scaling laws for the net energy gain in different pulse length and laser radius at focus are also studied. Abstract:Within the framework of plane-wave angular spectrum analysis of the electromagnetic field structure, a solution valid for tightly focused radially polarized few-cycle laser pulses propagating in vacuum is presented. The resulting field distribution is significantly different from that based on the paraxial approximation for pulses with either small or large beam diameters. We compare the electron accelerations obtained with the two solutions and find that the energy gain obtained with our new solution is usually much larger than that with the paraxial approximation solution.

Abstract:Using three dimensional test particle simulations, the characteristics and essential conditions under which an electron, in a vacuum laser beam, can undergo a capture and acceleration scenario (CAS) have been examined. When a0≳100 the electron can be captured and violently accelerated to energies ≳1 GeV, with an acceleration gradient ≳10 GeV/cm, where a0=eE0/meωc is the normalized laser field amplitude. The physical mechanism behind the CAS is that diffraction of the focused laser beam leads to a slowing down of the effective wave phase velocity along the captured electron trajectory, such that the electron can be trapped in the acceleration phase of the wave for a longer time and thus gain significant energy from the field.

Abstract:We investigate the parameters such as the energy gains, comparisons for linearly and circularly polarized laser fields, the electron incident polarization azimuth angle, the electron incident crossing angle, and the electron incident momentum, etc., which are crucial for experimental test of the vacuum laser acceleration scheme in capture and acceleration scenario (CAS) [see, e.g., Phys. Rev. E 66 (2002) 066501]. Physical explanation of these features has been presented based on the CAS scheme. The results show that all those parameters are in the reasonable ranges obtainable by presently experimental facilities.

Abstract:Concerning laser-driven electron acceleration in vacuum, a comparison was made between using circularly polarized (CP) laser field and linearly polarized (LP) field. It has been found that the main advantage for using CP field is that its acceleration channel occupies relatively larger phase space, which can give rise to greater acceleration efficiency. This feature chiefly comes from the difference in the distribution of the longitudinal electric components of these two kinds of fields. One of the disadvantages with CP field is the "energy saturation" phenomenon as the laser intensity is sufficiently high, resulting from the enhanced Lorentz force component in CP field. Physical explanations of these characteristics are addressed as well.

Abstract:A novel electron acceleration approach with two overlapping linearly polarized laser pulses in vacuum is proposed. By our simulation, the energy and space spreads can reduce greatly comparing with the acceleration with only one laser pulse having doubled peak laser intensity for realistic laser parameters and the average energy gain from our scheme can be doubled for certain pulse lengths, at the same time. Using numerical simulation, analytical criteria for optimal regimes of our acceleration scheme is found.

Abstract:In this paper, an approximate pulsed-laser-beam solution of Maxwell's equation in vacuum is derived. Then with the numerical simulation method, electron acceleration induced by high-intensity [Q(0) = eE(0)/(m(e)wc) = 3] lasers is discussed in connection with the recent experiment of Malka et al. It is found that the maximum energy gain and the relationship between the final energy and the scattering angle can be well reproduced, but the polarization effect of electron-laser interactions is not very prominent. These results show that the ponderomotive potential model is still applicable, which means that the stimulated Compton scattering is the main fundamental mechanism responsible for the electron acceleration at this laser intensity.
