Abstract:The multilayer Rosen type piezoelectric transformer is investigated through linear piezoelectric equations combined with the theory of elasticity. The equivalent circuit model of piezoelectric transformer is deduced through the analysis of the equivalent circuit of the input and output portion. According to the model, the mathematical expressions of the equivalent mechanical mass, equivalent mechanical compliance, equivalent mechanical resistance, the step-up ratio of the multilayer piezoelectric transformer are concluded. Then the relationship of the step-up ratio with load, output power with load and step-up ratio with frequency are simulated.

Abstract:The piezoelectric transformer has so many merits, for example high set-up, non-electromagnetic noise et al, in comparison with the electromagnetic transformer. The mechanism of piezoelectric transformer is so complex that the report about researching the mechanism is scarcity, except for Rosen piezoelectric transformer. In this paper, a piezoelectric transformer using longitudinal vibration is researched. From the Mosen equivalent circuit, using the Taylor series, a lump equivalent circuit is built, and then a function is built, which express the relation between the performers and the three factor: the electrical quality factor (Q e), mechanical quality factor (Q m) and electromechanical coupling factor (k). Because just Q e is dependent on load resistance and dimension and there are the standard methods to measure the values of Q 3, Q mand k, the design processing is simplified.

Abstract:As the multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) has some advantages such as small compact, lower power consume, high efficiency, absence of electromagnetic, high power to weight ratio, they can be solutions for making better transformer and key component of power supplies in electronic instruments. In this paper, using tape casting technology and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-Pb (Ni1/3Nb2/3)O-3-Pb(ZrTi)O-3 piezoelectric material, many prototypes of MPT were co-fired at a lower sintering temperature of less than 980 degrees C. The prototypes were co-fired using 70/30 Ag-Pb internal electrodes. Their mechanical vibration on the surface of the MPT prototypes was measured using OFV056 Vibrometer Scanning Head. The Impedance Analyzer HP4192A with thermostat was applied to measure electrical parameters of MPT at various temperatures. The vibration behavior and temperature distribution at various temperatures were investigated by using the laser Doppler interferometer and radiation thermometer. And the thermal stress caused by non-uniform temperature field was calculated.

Abstract:A multilayer laminated piezoelectric Pb(Zr(1-x)Ti(x))O(3) (PZT) ceramic transformer, operating in a half- wavelength longitudinal resonant mode (λ/2 mode), has been analyzed. This piezoelectric transformer is composed of one thickness-polarized section (T-section) for exciting the longitudinal mechanical vibrations, two longitudinally polarized sections (L-section) for generating high-voltage output, and two insulating layers laminated between the T-section and L-section layers to provide insulation between the input and output sections. Based on the piezoelectric constitutive and motion equations, an electro-elasto-electric (EEE) equivalent circuit has been developed, and correspondingly, an effective EEE coupling coefficient was proposed for optimum design of this multilayer transformer. Commercial finite element analysis software is used to determine the validity of the developed equivalent circuit. Finally, a prototype sample was manufactured and experimental data was collected to verify the model's validity.
The Influence Of Loads On Some Characteristics Of Multilayer Piezoelectric Transformer

Abstract:The influence of load at the output end of multilayer piezoelectric transformer on the input impedance and the phase difference between input voltage and current were investigated. Both of them exhibit significant changes with loads. The shifts of input impedance as a function of loads at three vibration modes were measured. Input impedance depends heavily on loads. When the load increases from short to open, the peak location of input impedance moves toward higher frequency and its magnitude undergoes sharp variation. The phase difference between input voltage and current were also studied. The curves of the phase difference exhibit symmetry in vertical direction. Both the location of the symmetrical axial and magnitude of the curves change with the loads. The symmetrical axial shifts from low to high frequency as the output circuit changes from short to open. The influence of those change with load on the working features was analyzed and some suggestions were given for the applications of multilayer piezoelectric transformer.

Abstract:Theoretical analysis is performed for the sound radiation of a cylindrical power transformer composed of piezoelectric transducers with radial polarization. The transformer is driven in thickness-stretch mode, and an exact solution is obtained for the sound pressure and sound power level in the surrounding fluid. Representative examples are used to illustrate the sound field induced by the operation of the transformer. Numerical results indicate that the electrical impedance and the thickness ratio of actuator/sensor to metal core have considerable effects on sound radiation of the cylindrical power transformer.

Abstract:The low-fired high performance piezoelectric ceramics used for multilayer piezoelectric transformer were investigated. Based on the transient liquid phase sintering mechanism, by doping suitable eutectic additives and optimizing processing, the sintering temperature of the quaternary system piezoelectric ceramics with high piezoelectric properties could be lower to about 960–1000°C. The low-temperature sintering multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) has been developed. Some characteristics of MPT were systemically studied. The measurements include the frequency response of input impedance, frequency response of phase difference between input voltage and current, frequency shifting with load, input impedance changing with load, phase difference between input voltage and current shifting with load, and phase difference between input voltage and vibration velocity. The vibration modes and resonance characters of MPT were measured by a Laser Doppler Scanning Vibrometer. Several kinds of MPT with high voltage step-up ratio, high power density, high transfer efficiency and low cost have been industrially produced and commercialized. It reveals a broad application prospect for back-light power of liquid crystal display and piezo-ionizer etc.

Abstract:The multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) has features such as small compact, high efficiency, high step-up ratio, absence of electromagnetic, etc. So it is an ideal substitution for power supplies based on conventional electromagnetic transformer in small-sized electronic instruments. In this paper, using tape casting technology and Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-Pb (Ni(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-Pb(ZrTi)O(3) piezoelectric material, multilayer piezoelectric transformer prototypes were sintered and fabricated. The prototypes were co-fired using 70/30 Ag-Pb internal electrodes. Using Polytec300-F Vibrometer, the vibration mode and displacement in the longitudinal direction were measured. Vibration behavior and transformation ratio of the prototypes were tested to investigate the performance degeneration and fatigue of MPT.

Abstract:Piezoelectric transformer is an important part in the bionic active member and it is an interactive electromechanical-coupled system. Piezoelectric intelligent structure models are presented from various angles and the effect of parameters of the piezoelectric coupled electromechanical system on the energy conversion efficiency of piezoelectric transformer is especially discussed in this paper. The establishment of the coupled model of the piezoelectric intelligent structure is helpful to interpret the physical essence of the bionic active member and to design the intelligent structure with better performance and higher efficiency.

Abstract:The low-fired high performance piezoelectric ceramics used for multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) has been studied. The properties of piezoelectric ceramics sintering temperature lower than 1000degreesC are as following: K-p=0.60similar to0.70, d(33)approximate to 400 PC/N, tandelta less than or equal to 50x10(-4), epsilon(33)(T)/epsilon(0)approximate to2200. The vibration mode and resonance character of MPT were measured by a Laser Doppler Vibrometer. It was found that the resonance impedance is an important influence factor on decreasing temperature rise of MPT during operating state. The low-temperature sintering MPT with high voltage step-up ratio, high power density, high transfer efficiency, and low cost could be obtained. It reveals a broad application prospect for back light power of liquid crystal display.
Multilayer modal actuator-based piezoelectric transformers

Abstract:An innovative, multilayer piezoelectric transformer equipped with a full modal filtering input electrode is reported herein. This modal-shaped electrode, based on the orthogonal property of structural vibration modes, is characterized by full modal filtering to ensure that only the desired vibration mode is excited during operation. The newly developed piezoelectric transformer is comprised of three layers: a multilayered input layer, an insulation layer, and a single output layer. The electrode shape of the input layer is derived from its structural vibration modal shape, which takes advantage of the orthogonal property of the vibration modes to achieve a full modal filtering effect. The insulation layer possesses two functions: first, to couple the mechanical vibration energy between the input and output, and second, to provide electrical insulation between the two layers. To meet the two functions, a low temperature, co-fired ceramic (LTCC) was used to provide the high mechanical rigidity and high electrical insulation. It can be shown that this newly developed piezoelectric transformer has the advantage of possessing a more efficient energy transfer and a wider optimal working frequency range when compared to traditional piezoelectric transformers. A multilayer piezoelectric, transformer-based inverter applicable for use in LCD monitors or portable displays is presented as well.

Abstract:Compared with conventional electromagnetic transformer, piezoelectric transformer has many advantages such as compact volume, high step-up ratio, non-flammability, and none-electromagnetic pollution. In this paper, the parameters of equivalent circuit of radial vibration mode piezoelectric transformer are measured through Y-parameter equivalent circuit model using Agilent-4294A impedance analyzer. The values of measurement and model are compared, and the causes of the differences are analyzed. Then the characteristics of variety of step-up ratio, output power, and efficiency with load are simulated and analyzed by turning the measured results into the formula.

Abstract:This paper has described the vibration principle of multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) and used the finite element analysis (FEA) to study the resonance characteristic of MPT. An advanced laser Doppler interferometer has been used to measure the displacement amplitudes along the longitudinal direction at half wave and full wave resonances of MPT under a series of input voltages. The results show that the measured and FEA calculated values are reasonable matched. It also shows that the relationships between displacement amplitudes along the longitudinal direction and input voltages are linear when the latter are below a certain level. The amplitudes step to a certain limit with the input voltages increasing above the level. The vibration displacement amplitudes of input part are a little larger than those of the Output one.

Abstract:Piezoelectric transformers are increasingly getting popular in the electrical devices owing to several advantages such as small size, high efficiency, no electromagnetic noise and non-flammable. In addition to the conventional applications such as ballast for back light inverter in notebook computers, camera flash, and fuel ignition several new applications have emerged such as AC/DC converter, battery charger and automobile lighting. These new applications demand high power density and wide range of voltage gain. Currently, the transformer power density is limited to 40 W/cm(3) obtained at low voltage gain. The purpose of this study was to investigate a transformer design that has the potential of providing higher power density and wider range of voltage gain. The new transformer design utilizes radial mode both at the input and output port and has the unidirectional polarization in the ceramics. This design was found to provide 30 W power with an efficiency of 98% and 30 degrees C temperature rise from the room temperature. An electro-mechanical equivalent circuit model was developed to describe the characteristics of the piezoelectric transformer. The model was found to successfully predict the characteristics of the transformer. Excellent matching was found between the computed and experimental results. The results of this study will allow to deterministically design unipoled piezoelectric transformers with specified performance. It is expected that in near future the unipoled transformer will gain significant importance in various electrical components.

Abstract:The voltage gain, output power and efficiency are three important parameters to characterize the multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT). In this paper, a piezoelectric transformer provided by Weihua Corp was employed for evaluation of their basic electrical properties and the influence of the environment temperature in the basic electrical properties. The results show that the environmental stability of the step-down multilayer piezoelectric transformer is good, but dramatical changers of environment in a long time will have influences on the performance, and high environment temperature also affects the use of performance seriously.

Abstract:In this contribution, we present our study on disc-shaped and homogeneously poled piezoelectric ceramic transformers working in planar-extensional vibration modes. Transformers are designed with electrodes divided into wedge, axisymmetrical ring-dot, moonie, smile, or yin-yang segments. Transformation ratio, efficiency, and input and output impedances were measured for low-power signals. Transformer efficiency and transformation ratio were measured as a function of frequency and impedance load in the secondary circuit. Optimum impedance for the maximum efficiency has been found. Maximum efficiency and no-load transformation ratio can reach almost 100% and 52 for the fundamental resonance of ring-dot transformers and 98% and 67 for the second resonance of 2-segment wedge transformers. Maximum efficiency was reached at optimum impedance, which is in the range from 500 Ω to 10 kΩ, depending on the electrode pattern and size. Fundamental vibration mode and its overtones were further studied using frequency-modulated digital holographic interferometry and by the finite element method. Complementary information has been obtained by the infrared camera visualization of surface temperature profiles at higher driving power.

Abstract:In this study, a modified disk-shaped multiple-output piezoelectric transformer operated at the fundamental radial vibration mode has been presented. A derived equivalent circuit for the multioutput piezoelectric transformer was used to analyze the performance. Two piezoelectric transformers, a symmetrically electroded piezoelectric transformer with dual outputs and an asymmetrically electroded piezoelectric transformer with triple outputs, were fabricated with lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric ceramics. The characteristics of the two piezoelectric transformers were investigated experimentally. The piezoelectric transformer with multiple outputs has potential to be used in power supply units and other electronic circuits.
